MEET THE CU COACHING STAFF… Tim Place will enter his fifth season at the helm of the Hawks football program. Place led his 2011 squad to a 3-7 overall record, 2-5 CIAA record, and a 1-4 Northern Division record. Place has accumulated a 10-30 overall record in four seasons at Chowan. Last year he helped produce Robert Holland, who was named to the All-NCCAA First Team on offense. Under Place, Tony Goodman was named to the CIAA All-Conference Second Team in 2010. Holland, Goodman, and Anthony Hooks were also named to the All-NCCAA Football Team last year. Place, who stepped down as the head coach at Urbana University (OH) to accept the position at Chowan five years ago, has a vast and diverse football coaching background. Most recently he served as the head coach at Urbana where he tallied an 11-11 record over the past two seasons. At Urbana he breathed new life into the program after taking over as interim Head Coach in the summer of 2006. In a seamless transition, he guided that 2006 team to a 4-1 season start and was ranked as high as 10th in the NAIA national rankings.
HEAD COACH TIM PLACE
Place led the team to only its second winning season in program history after finishing up at 6-5. For six consecutive weeks the 2007 squad was ranked in the NAIA’s Top 25. Over his two year tenure as head coach at Urbana Place saw 23 student-athletes named all conference, two student-athletes garner NAIA AllAmerica Honors, and two student-athletes be named to the NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athlete team. As the assistant head coach at Urbana, Place also served as the football program’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor. He was integral in bringing several of the best football classes into Urbana while also holding them to high academic standards. In fact while he was the team’s academic advisor they raised their overall team GPA by one point. Along with his six-year stint at Urbana, Place has college level coaching experience at Western Carolina University, Eureka College (IL), and Hartwick College (NY). At WCU he served as a linebackers and defensive line coach while also heading up the academic support services for over 300 student-athletes within the WCU athletic department. At Eureka he coached both wide receivers and tight ends, including the NCAA DIII’s All-Time Leading Receiver, Kurt Barth. Place graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology. At W & L he was a four-year member of the football team and two-year letter winner. He has a M.S. from SUNY-Albany in Counseling Psychology. Place is married to wife, Jennifer Zak Place, and together they have two children, Nathaniel who is eight years old and Claire who is six years old
Brian Matesic will enter his fifth season as an assistant coach in the Hawks football program. Matesic serves as the team’s Assistant Head Coach of Defense and Defensive Backs. He helped produce All-CIAA defensive performer Tony Goodman. He will once again call the plays on the defensive side of the ball for Chowan this season. The Redford, Michigan native comes to Chowan after two seasons with the Urbana University Blue Knights where he worked under then-head coach Tim Place. Place hired Matesic at Urbana in March of 2006 where he worked primarily with the defensive backs. He was quickly promoted to the team’s recruiting coordinator and defensive passing game coordinator. His coaching was instrumental in their on-field success in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Upon Place’s acceptance of the Chowan head coaching position, Matesic served as Urbana’s Interim Head Coach until the athletic department named a new head coach in late April. Place then offered Matesic a slot on his staff at Chowan.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW The Chowan University Hawks look ton continue their rise in the CIAA in 2012. Fifth year head coach Tim Place returns four starters on both offense and defense, and has a substantial amount of depth on the team with a roster including 16 seniors. "A large senior class gives us a chance," indicates Place. "These young men have a unique opportunity as well as a critical role. If we want to achieve what we have talked about, this group must do a great job of leading." The offense is guided by senior wide receiver Robert Holland (Newport News, VA). In the 2011 season, Holland led the CIAA in receptions (69), and receiving yards (914), and tallied a team-high 13 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Jason Ampy (Sutherland, VA) is counted on as a key returner. Ampy finished the 2011 season in 4th for total season tackles (90) tied for 17th in the CIAA in sacks (4). He had 37 solo tackles, and started all ten games for the Hawks. Place led Chowan to a 3-7 record in 2011, leading to a tie for fourth place in the CIAA North Division. The Hawks finished fourth in the CIAA in 2011 in passing offense, 241.9 yards per game. Chowan also led the league in kickoff return average (24.6 yards), and finished third in punt return average (13.5). The Hawks will have five home contests this season, the most since 2007. "We are pleased to have a balanced schedule this season," stated Place on his playing schedule for the 2012 season. "We have the utmost respect for every team on our schedule this year. We are going to take it one game at a time and see where that leads us." The Hawks will open the season with back-to-back road trips with stops at Livingstone College on September 1st and Virginia Military Institute September 8th. They will open their home playing season with Shorter University (GA) on September 15th. Shorter is transitioning to NCAA DII status after competing as a member of the NAIA's Mid-South Conference in Georgia. Chowan will turn around to host three consecutive home CIAA match ups. On September 29th the Hawks will host Fayetteville State University out of the South Division, the second of the team's cross over match ups. The Hawks will start divisional play on October 6th with a visit from Bowie State University. Homecoming will feature the Hawks against Virginia Union University on October 15th in another divisional match up.
