Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Head Coach Amy Bell

Amy Bell enters her second season as a member of the Chowan University Athletics Department. This is her first season as the Women’s Head Soccer Coach. Prior to coming to Chowan,Bell spent two and a half seasons as a graduate assistant soccer coach at Wheeling Jesuit University. In 2010, she helped guide the Lady Cardinals to a 10-10 overall record and 6-4 WVIAC record. For the past three years, Bell has also coached FC Wheeling United, a U19 Girls Club team in Wheeling, WV. Bell is a graduate of Shepherd University (WV), where she was a four year starter for the Rams. As a goalkeeper, Bell was a four-time All-Conference Team member, two-year team captain, and two-year team MVP. Bell is a native of Colorado.

2012 Hawks Assistant Coach Scott Cullen

Scott Cullen joins the men’s and women’s soccer coaching staff this year. Cullen is a 2012 graduate of Chowan University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Science and Physical Education, and was a three time member of the Dean’s List. He was a four year member of the men’s soccer team at Chowan, and was ranked third in NCAA Division II for saves in a season (141) and saves per game (7.83) his senior year. Cullen also completed an internship with the Chowan University Athletic Department in areas of athletic training and athletic communication.
