MEET THE CU COACHING STAFF… Tim Place will enter his sixth season at the helm of the Hawks football program. Place guided the 2012 squad to their first winning season since 1999 when the then-Braves posted a 5-4 mark. The 2012 season was the most successful in terms of wins and conference finish since the school began its transition to a four-year school in 1992. Their 6-4 overall record and 5-2 record in league play was good for a 2nd place finish in the CIAA Northern Division, their best finish since joining the conference in 2008. Place received the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald Front Page Award in March of 2013 in recognition of his efforts and leadership in the campus and local community. In addition to their success on the field, the Hawks had their second-ever representative on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team with Austin Tallant earning the honor in 2012. Place, who stepped down as the head coach at Urbana University (OH) to accept the position at Chowan six years ago, has a vast and diverse football coaching background. Most recently he served as the head coach at Urbana where he tallied an 11-11 record over two seasons.

HEAD COACH TIM PLACE

At Urbana, he breathed new life into the program after taking over as interim Head Coach in the summer of 2006. In a seamless transition, he guided that 2006 team to a 4-1 season start and was ranked as high as 10th in the NAIA national rankings. In 2007, Place led the team to only its second winning season in program history after finishing up at 6-5. For six consecutive weeks, the 2007 squad was ranked in the NAIA’s Top 25.Over his two year tenure as head coach at Urbana, Place saw 23 student-athletes named all-conference, two student-athletes garner NAIA AllAmerica Honors, and two student-athletes be named to the NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athlete team. Place spent a total of six seasons with the Blue Knights, four as the Defensive Coordinator, three as the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, and two as the head coach. As the Defensive Coordinator in 2004, Place was named the Mid-States Football Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year after coaching one of the league’s premier defenses. As the assistant head coach at Urbana, Place also served as the football program’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor. He was integral in bringing several of the best football classes into Urbana while also holding them to high academic standards. While he was the team’s academic advisor, they raised their overall team GPA by one point. Along with his six-year stint at Urbana, Place has college coaching experience at Western Carolina University, Eureka College (IL), and Hartwick College (NY). At WCU, he served as a linebackers and defensive line coach while also heading up the academic support services for over 300 student-athletes within the WCU athletic department. At Eureka, he coached both wide receivers and tight ends, including the NCAA DIII’s AllTime Leading Receiver, Kurt Barth. Place also has high school head coaching experience at Greene Central High School in New York and at Ravenna High School in Ohio. Place graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology. At W&L he was a four-year member of the football team and two-year letter winner. He has a M.S. from SUNY-Albany in Counseling Psychology. Place and his wife, Jennifer Zak Place, have two children, Nathaniel who is 12 years old and Claire who is 10 years old.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW The Hawks return to the gridiron in 2013 looking to pick up where they left off. In their fifth season as part of the storied CIAA, Chowan surpassed expectations by finishing in second place in the Northern Division after being predicted to finish in fifth in the preseason polls. Head Coach Tim Place led the Hawks to their first winning season since 1999, and their most successful season in terms of wins and conference finish since transitioning to a four year institution and becoming a member of NCAA Division II. This season, Place and his Hawks look to build off their 6-4 overall record and 5-2 mark in league play. They return a key core of starters and will take on a competitive schedule in an effort to build off the success of last season. Chowan kicks-off their season in the Queen City on September 7th against UNC-Charlotte as their second contest in the 49ers' inaugural football season. UNC-Charlotte will compete as an FCS independent in 2013 and 2014 before joining Conference USA in 2015 as a member of that FBS conference. The Hawks will host Alderson-Broaddus on September 14th in Garrison Stadium before heading to Fairfield, CT on the 21st to take on the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University. Chowan will open up CIAA crossover play in Murfreesboro the following week when they host the Shaw University Bears. The Hawks will then hit the road for three straight CIAA match-ups. They travel to Fayetteville State University on October 5th in cross-over competition before heading to Bowie State University and Virginia Union University on October 12th and 19th respectively to kick-off divisional play. Homecoming will feature the Hawks and cross-town rival Elizabeth City State University on October 26th. Chowan's home season finale and annual Hall of Fame game will take place on November 2nd against the Trojans of Virginia State University. They will wrap-up the regular season on November 9th with a trip to Lincoln University (PA) to take on the Lions. Three-time All-CIAA performer and Robert Holland returns for his final season for the blue and white. Holland will be counted on as a key part of the Hawks’ offense along with sophomore Ryan Nolan, a 2012 All-Rookie selection. As a junior, Holland paced the Hawks with 943 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He currently owns school records in career touchdowns (27), single season points (84), career points (178), single game receptions (18), season receptions (86), career receptions (220), single game yards (221), season yards (1,078) and career yards (2,825). On the defensive side of the ball, senior TJ Batchelor looks to build off a stand-out season in which he was named as an All-CIAA performer, NCCAA Defensive Player of the Year, Don Hansen All Region Super 1 Second Team and Third Team All-American. Cameron Stover will set the tone again this year in the quarterback position. Stover set two season records last season after throwing 2,358 passing yards and completing 182 passes. Coach Place looks forward to a successful season, yet indicates that there is still much work to be done. “We need to play hard, fast, smart, together, and disciplined for all sixty minutes of all ten games. It’s critical that we are able to improve red-zone efficiency, protect the football, and eliminate pre-snap penalties. Finally, we have to eliminate the big-play.”
