NOTES

Coming off their third season of CIAA competition, the Hawks finished with a 12-17 overall record and 5-11 CIAA record. Chowan finished in a tie for 1st place in the CIAA North Division. They earned the #5 seed out of the North for the CIAA Tournament, where they defeated Fayetteville State in a thrilling buzzer beather win, and went on to defeat Virginia Union before falling to Johnson C. Smith in the semi-final game.

CHOWAN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON PREVIEW 2012-2013 Head Coach Patrick Mashuda enters his ninth season at the helm of the Chowan University Women’s Basketball program. Last year, the Hawks finished with a 12-15 record, including going 5-11 in CIAA play. They finished fifth in the CIAA North Division, and earned the #5 seed for the conference tournament. Chowan beat Fayetteville State University in the first round, overcoming a 14 point deficit in the second half to pull out the win. The Hawks went on to defeat Virginia Union University before falling to Johnson C. Smith in the semifinal game of the CIAA Championship. This was the first time the Hawks had a semi-final appearance at the CIAA tournament in their three year history with the CIAA. Patricia Price returns to her alma mater to serve as assistant coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. She joins fourth year assistant coach Meghan Austin to lead the Hawks in their 2012-2013 campaign. Ransheda Jennings and Talaya Lynch each had standout seasons for the Hawks a year ago. They each were named All-CIAA First Team for the second consecutive year, and Lynch, along with teammate Janelle Murphy were named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team. Lynch led Chowan with 15.8 ppg and 67 three pointers made, and is counted on to be the spark in the Hawks’ offense this season. Murphy averaged 9.4 ppg during the 2012-2013 season along with 42 three pointers. Despite losing Jennings to graduation, Lynch and Murphy should be consistent leading scorers for the Hawks. Along with Lynch and Murphy, the Hawks return Danielle Coleman, who started 27 games last season. An efficient player and defensive presence, Coleman shot 53.8% from the field and had 31 steals a season ago. The Hawks will also count on T’Arra Cutting this season. Cutting, a senior guard from Maryland, started in 2729 games last season, and had 32 steals during her junior campaign. The Hawks will rely on T’Shae Glenn, a guard from Charlotte, NC to add some depth to their line-up, along with center Shanice Henry.

Interesting Facts about CU Women’s Basketball Last season, Chowan pulled off a thrilling come –from- behind win in the first round of the CIAA Tournament. Down by 14 in the second half, the Hawks came back to pull off a 51-50 buzzer beater victory over the Lady Broncos. The Hawks’ advancement to the CIAA semi-final game was their best finish at the CIAA Tournament in their short history in the CIAA.

Patrick Mashuda enters his ninth season at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Chowan. Since taking over the program in 2004, Mashuda has accumulated a 104-116 overall coaching record and took his team to the NCCAA South Region Tournament in three of his first five seasons as head coach. Mashuda is also a part of the Chowan University Athletics Management Team as the Associate Athletics Director for NCAA Compliance, a position he has held since the school transitioned to DII status in 2005-06. The 2011-2012 team saw the program reach new heights. January 26th 2012 proved to be a historic night as Coach Mashuda earned his 100th career win in a 68-59 victory over Elizabeth City State, and freshman Summer Curtis tied the school record for blocks in a single season. Mashuda led the Hawks to the CIAA semi-final game for the first time since entering the tournament in 2010. In the first round, All-CIAA Ransheda Jennings led the Hawks past Fayetteville State University with a buzzer beater shot. .

PATRICK MASHUDA 9th SEASON

All-CIAA Talaya Lynch stepped up against Virginia Union, scoring 19 points to lead the Hawks to a 58-32 win over Virginia Union to advance to the semi-final game against Johnson C. Smith University.

In 2010-2011, Chowan competed in their second season as a member of the storied CIAA, where Mashuda led his program to an 11-7 CIAA record and a tie for first place in the North Division. His team improved to 15-13 overall, which included a five-game conference winning streak. Mashuda led the Hawks to their first ever CIAA Tournament victory, a 56-53 come from behind win over Livingstone College on February 28th. Ransheda Jennings and Talaya Lynch were named to the 2010-2011 AllCIAA Team. Mashuda is also a part of the Chowan University Athletics Management Team as the Associate Athletics Director for NCAA Compliance, a position he has held since the school transitioned to DII status in 2005-06. Mashuda comes to Chowan by way of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he attended Mars High School. Upon graduation from Mars he went to Butler County Community College in Butler, PA where he played golf and basketball. He received an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration and went on to Robert Morris University in December of 1992, where he was a two-year member of the golf team.

Meghan Austin will enter her fourth season as Assistant Women’s Basketball coach at Chowan. Austin helped the 2011-2012 squad to a 3-7 CIAA North record, which placed the Hawks in a tie for fourth place in the division. She guided Talaya Lynch to the All-CIAA Tournament Team. Lynch was also named Chowan's 2011-2012 Athlete of the year. After the 2009-2010 season, Austin’s first with the Hawks, Lynch was tabbed as CIAA Rookie of the Year. Austin oversees player development, recruiting, and practice planning as part of her duties as assistant coach. Austin, a native of Lynchburg, Virginia, came to Chowan from Coker College, where she served as an assistant women's basketball coach for one year. She also was employed with Coker's Residence Life department. While at Coker Austin oversaw skill development and the weight and conditioning program for the women's basketball program. Austin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a four-year member of the women's basketball program. She graduated in the spring of 2008 with degrees in Exercise and Sport Science and Psychology. She also minored in Coaching.

MEGHAN AUSTIN 4th SEASON

Under Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell, Austin was a part of four ACC Conference Titles and made two NCAA Final Four appearances (2006 and 2007).

“I am blessed to have Coach Meghan here for a fourth year,” said head coach Patrick Mashuda. “What she brings to our program is invaluable. Our program has taken tremendous steps over the last two years directly because of her work ethic. She has a passion for the game and she has a passion for what we do. Meghan is like another head coach for this program and is a great role model for our young ladies. With her background at North Carolina, she knows how to win and win at the highest level.”

This year is the first year for Patricia Price as a member of the women's basketball coaching staff. She will serve as assistant basketball coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. Price is no stranger to Chowan having completed undergraduate studies in Exercise Science and Sport Management in 2011. During her time at Chowan, Price was also an integral part of the Chowan University women's basketball team. Price went on to earn her Masters of Education in Sport Leadership in May of 2012 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Price's most recent experience comes from the University of Richmond as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning program. While at Richmond, she was responsible for implementing and supervising training programs and assisting head coaches in daily training sessions. She also spent a year researching and designing individual and team training programs for American Family Fitness. Price also served as a strength and conditioning intern in 2010 for Virginia Commonwealth University where she implemented and supervised training programs for the Rams.

PATRICIA PRICE st

1 SEASON

Head coach Pat Mashuda looks forward to having Price on his staff. "As a head coach it is an honor to have one of your former players come back to join your staff. Coach P brings a wealth of knowledge from not only a basketball standpoint, but also from a strength and conditioning perspective. I am blessed to now have two outstanding assistant coaches in the women's basketball program."
