The School is located in one of the most prestigious historical buildings of Trieste, Palazzo Ferdinandeo, built in the second half of the 19th century in honour of Emperor Ferdinand I of Habsburg. The Palazzo is situated in a leafy part of the city, a short walk from the park of Villa Revoltella; recent restructuring has made it one of Europe s most functional and up-to-date education centres. It houses sophisticated teaching tools and the most advanced technology applied to learning processes: from wi-fi coverage to Bloomberg database access and to the e-Learning FirstClass platform, from simultaneous interpreting to the internal video streaming system.

The location of the Palazzo, its architectural beauty, its imperial charm, its technical facilities, support services, the staff s openness and attention, and the quality of participants are all elements that make the atmosphere of the MIB School of Management unique. The School also has a fully equipped Executive Centre, located in Capriva del Friuli, in the heart of the Collio region. The 19th century stately home of Villa Russiz hosts the MBA in Wine Business and the renowned vineyard of the same name.

The classrooms and large conference hall are connected by a cable broadcast system, which via the network effectively transforms the School s teaching areas into a huge single multimedia classroom. The School has a 200 seat conference hall, a library, reading room with specialist periodicals, computer rooms, bar-cafeteria, self-service restaurant, living room and garden. Villa Russiz

5 Trieste and the world of insurance

Trieste is the perfect home for the MIRM, as the insurance industry has always played a major part in the local economy. Some of the leading companies of Italy and Europe were founded here, like RAS (Allianz Group), and have their headquarters in the city, including Assicurazioni Generali and Lloyd Adriatico (Allianz Group). With its early vocation in the sector, the presence of important academic institutions in actuarial and insurance studies, and the cityÂ’s Central European and international culture, Trieste is the ideal location for the Master in Insurance & Risk Management.

"Insurance companies can only excel if they succeed in being at the frontiers of knowledge in every professional task they undertake. The MIRM provides the skills to meet these challenges."

The Environment

Master in Insurance & Risk Management

In todayÂ’s market conditions, characterised by global competition, insurance groups face many challenges and opportunities for growth. Companies have now to design and introduce into the market products that offer something new. They have also to develop alternative distribution channels, ensure ever-higher standards of service for their customers and create more effective means of communication. Insurance groups have new opportunities for growth in the form of investment funds, pension funds and other types of pension investment. The Master in Insurance & Risk Management (MIRM), organised by MIB School of Management in collaboration with some of the most important players in the insurance and financial sector, represents an effective response to these new requirements for specific skills. Proof of this programmeÂ’s high level of quality is the prestigious accreditation from ASFOR (The Italian Association for Management Education Development); it also enjoys the patronage of I.R.S.A. (Institute for the research and development of insurance), A.I.D.A. (International association of insurance law), A.RI.M.AS. (Academic Risk Management Association), A.N.I.A. (National Association of Insurance Companies) and CINEAS (Academic Consortium for Engineering in Insurance).

Objectives The approach of the MIRM programme is directed towards the future. The chief objective of the Master programme is to train candidates to meet the different and ever-changing needs of companies in the insurance and financial sector, in terms of both innovative knowledge and management skills. From this point of view, its aim is the overall development of the individual, so participants will be able to use the vast range of tools that are indispensable in this highly technical sector, and which can increase the individual skills needed for a managerial career.

The constant integration between specialised knowledge and a managerial vision of business is one of the distinguishing features of the MIRM, which fits in midway between a Master of Science (M.Sc.) and an MBA programme. Our aim is to train individuals able to use effectively insurance techniques and instruments of risk management from the standpoint of overall business management and development. Ermanno Pitacco Academic Director, Master in Insurance & Risk Management The Master programme has been designed with our sponsor and partner companies to develop skills needed to tackle the challenges of the insurance and financial sector with success. Motivation, involvement and leadership are blended in the training process with skill, techniques and ability. It is a fascinating, brilliant experience. I sincerely hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you to our school as a candidate for the Master in Insurance & Risk Management programme. Federica Seganti Programme Director, Master in Insurance & Risk Management

8 Calendar

The Master is full-time course lasting 12 months from January to December. The course is divided into three distinct phases:

CLASS ACTIVITIES January - August

The first part of the course provides for rapid learning of basic knowledge through the use of different teaching methods, and subsequent closer study of the most modern and sophisticated management models. In particular, specialised subjects are developed with the contribution of numerous company testimonials and case studies. The hands-on approach involves participants in group activities and in-the-field projects. The leading Italian insurance companies host MIRM participants for a variety of interesting workshops and company visits. Students also have the opportunity to participate in motivating international study programmes, normally in Munich and London, the hubs of European finance. Together with the other Masters courses, a variety of elective activities are also organised.

PROJECT WORK, INTERNSHIP, INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES September - November

The second phase of the course focuses primarily on writing up the final project. During this phase, students are given the opportunity carry out a period of internship with our sponsors or other partner firms. The school regards this phase as a particularly important one for the participants. Through direct work experience, interns have the opportunity to verify first-hand the knowledge they have acquired, thereby developing a more mature attitude towards the real business world. As an alternative to the internship, participants can choose to spend part of their study course abroad in a country they believe is particular interesting to their learning and career objectives.

FINAL EXAM AND GRADUATION DAY December

The final phase sets out the discussion of the project work before the SchoolÂ’s Academic Committee, company tutors and selected representatives of the companies promoting the course. The Master concludes with the solemn awards ceremony in the prestigious conference hall of Palazzo Ferdinandeo.

10 Curriculum

The Master in Insurance & Risk Management offers an unusual and original approach, combining a specialisation in insurance and financial matters with a business approach based upon the latest management models. The MIRM is divided into three broad thematic areas that are explored over the course.

INSURANCE

The Insurance Area aims mainly to present insurance products in all different aspects and approaches. The initial phase involves the theoretical part, which helps the understanding of the technical characteristics of products, but also aids the understanding of the particular features of the insurance business. Attention then shifts to the insurance products with the hands-on approach, both in the field of insurance and reinsurance. Topics covered include: Insurance technique life and non life Property and Casualty Insurance Life Assurance Pension and health funds Insurer s risks and solvency Reinsurance

RISK MANAGEMENT

This area aims to provide an overview of issues regarding risk management in a variety of sectors. The goal is not only to provide the participants with the most widespread management tools, but above all with risk management strategies and policies. In-depth studies concerning issues of risk management in financial services, especially in insurance companies, are presented. Topics covered include: Objectives and tools of risk management Company risks identification, control, prevention and transfer Strategic risk management Market, operating and credit risk Financial risk management Asset and liability management (ALM)

For more detailed programme visit our web address www.mib.edu/mirm

11 ___Curriculum

INSURANCE COMPANY MANAGEMENT

This area is the most decidedly managerial of the MIRM programme. Many subjects concerning the insurance industry are tackled so as to present the various facets of a very specific area. Particular emphasis is given to the development of what are traditionally viewed as management skills and competencies. Great attention is paid in this direction to the development of soft skills. Topics covered include: Insurance and reinsurance markets Organisational structure and insurance groups design Strategic management and corporate governance Financial accounting Management control Finance Insurance marketing and sales network management Personal development Human resources management Re engineering of insurance processes and information technology Change management Regulatory framework

12 The MIRM Experience

"Participation in the MIRM programme is an opportunity not only to come in contact with the latest developments in the financial world and to focus on solutions to challenging issues, but also to develop your character and gain greater selfconfidence, while spending an exciting year with people who will become a part of your closest personal and professional circle." Stanislav Sirakov Head of Complex Desk Department Allianz Bulgaria Holding MIRM 2005

The Master programme was a life-changing experience for me, not just professionally, but above all in terms of my very being. It provided me not only with the technical and specialist skills I needed, but also gave me greater self-confidence. I learned to work in groups and in an exciting, international environment. Stefania Brandani Actuary B&W Deloitte MIRM 2005

MIRM is an effective means of facing the enormous complexities of the worlds of finance and risk management. During my year in Trieste, I was able to grow both professionally and as a person thanks to the great many guest speakers, the excellent faculty, and the valuable life experiences that the course provides. The union of these elements is the key to the MIRM development experience, which its participants are then able to turn into real competitive advantage in the workplace. Pasquale Nicastro Head of Market Risk Department MPS Banking Group MIRM 2001

The excellent method adopted in managerial training leads to the development of an ability to listen and to understand those with whom one works. As a result of the experience gained during the internships, the MIRM offers an exceptional investment for anyone aspiring to a managerial role in financial companies generally and in the insurance industry above all. Stefano Decarli Assistant to General Manager Allianz Group MIRM 2002

13 Teaching methods and approach

The special teaching approach adopted by the School is certainly one of the unique elements of the Master in Insurance & Risk Management.

From knowledge to competence

The objective of the course is to mould participants so that they can easily adapt methodological rigour to companies' practical requirements. The teaching methods of the MIRM aim to meet labour market needs, promptly noted thanks to the privileged relationship of the course with insurance companies.

Hands-on Approach

Through the direct involvement of sponsor and partner companies, it has been possible to set an effective process for the improvement and revision of the programme, in order to meet the business needs. The didactical activity directed by lecturers and testimonials constitutes only one, albeit important, part of the learning process for the participants of the MIRM course.

Other fundamental features of the teaching methods adopted by the MIB School of Management are: Outdoor Training Action-learning In-the-field projects Case studies and business games Company workshops Internships Elective courses

Personal Development

Great importance is also given to the development of the soft skills needed to bring out the potential of each person. So the stress on doing - which itself represents a clear difference between training at a Master s level and an academic training - is further strengthened and complemented by a stress on being; on the development of a manager s more personal ability, comprising communicative, relational, cross-cultural and leadership skills.

14 Outdoor Training

One of the key elements for today's managers is the ability to work in teams and create added value from them. This aspect is even more important when these groups are multicultural, interfunctional and geographically dispersed.

Team Building

MIRM puts strong emphasis on teamwork right from the start of the course with an outdoor training session for the whole course. This is aimed at icebreaking and setting the foundations for teambuilding within working groups. The basic format revolves around simulation exercises which test creativity, problem-solving, communication, leadership and trust-building skills.

The first section is dedicated to exploring the resources and weaknesses within individual working groups in these areas while the second section introduces an element of competition between the groups. Since all of the training takes place in locations outside Trieste, the experience is intense and constant - learning comes not only through the exercises and feedback but also through informal moments such as mealtimes. The result is an exhausting but rewarding introduction to new colleagues and the challenges of team work.

15 In-the-field Projects

Knowledge Centre

Responding to the precise expectations of the sponsor companies, MIRM has set the strategic goal of creating a “knowledge centre” in the insurance and risk management sector, recognised at the Italian and European level. For this reason, besides training activities, the School is strongly committed to research activities, carried out in collaboration with leading companies. MIRM Staff carries out some of these important researches and studies together with participants, so working groups are asked to apply insurance techniques, instruments of risk management and management tools to specific projects.

Real Consulting Projects

Thanks to the methods used, the support offered by the faculty and the nature of the information resources and technology used, these projects can be considered as true consulting projects that benefit sponsor and partner companies.

Examples: A field project on competitive analysis of the insurance industry and on enterprise-wide risk management for insurance companies in Italy has been developed with PriceWaterhouseCoopers Advisory. Participants gained an overview of the insurance industry in terms of competitive dynamics, main players, insurance products, distribution channels and key financial performance indicators. The goal of the project was the analysis of the solutions adopted by insurance companies in the field of risk management for investments, life and non life insurance, risk integration and capital allocation.

In 2006, with the invaluable support of the Research Department of Assicurazioni Generali, we have begun developing a permanent observatory of the leading European insurance groups. The main phases of the study are: 1. financial analysis of the insurance groups based on available information; 2. strategic analysis; 3. comparative analysis of the insurance groups; 4. role playing the presentation of results to an audience of potential institutional investors.

17 Company workshops and international study tours MIB School of Management is an international business school thanks to its worldwide relations, its international faculty, its participants from around the world, and its collaboration with global business partners. MIRM, one of MIBÂ’s international programmes with 40% of the students and 20% of the faculty coming from outside Italy - promotes many international activities: elective courses, seminars, conferences, and relations with other business schools.

International Study Tours

Two main international missions are organised, one in Munich and the other in London, during which company visits and seminars at other business schools are planned.

Workshops

Company visits are designed to give participants an understanding of a company from the inside and create business contacts which may prove useful in the future. Then a number of company workshops are run for in-the-field examination of topics linked to insurance and risk management in the industrial and financial sectors.

Some companies and institutions involved in the workshops & study tours: Allianz Assicurazioni Generali Audi Cass Business School - City University Citigroup Goldman Sachs illycaffè Lloyd Adriatico Assicurazioni LloydÂ’s of London MARSH - London Unipol Assicurazioni

NETWORKING

The steering committee is the core of a highly effective network in which the committee members work on an ongoing basis with the course staff in order to both strengthen relations with existing companies and to involve new ones in MIRM activities. This constant support is a great help to the staff both in classroom activities and in organising conferences and roundtable discussions on the latest issues with the participation of leading industry players.

20 Career Counselling

The main objective for MIRM s participants is to improve career prospects.

Career guidance support is available for participants throughout the year through a combination of:

Career Orientation Service Office

One-to-one interviews and career orientation aptitude tests.

Through the Career Orientation Service activities, the School is able to develop personal and professional competencies which are in line with the requests of target companies. The Career Orientation Service plays a role throughout the course, from selection process to internship period and subsequent placement.

Career Choices

During the course a series of activities enable each participant to optimise career choices like: specific panels and seminars with professionals and company presentations. These sessions provide participants with useful information on labour market trends and help them identify career opportunities in line with their goals and abilities.

Training on recruitment procedures. Assistance in defining the most effective strategy to achieve career objectives. Individual coaching on career choices. Lectures and personalised counselling on cover letters, résumé and job interviews. Mailing of résumés (CV book) to sponsor and partner companies. Organisation of individual job interviews between participants and recruiters.

21 Career Opportunities

Numerous new career opportunities are developing in the field of insurance and risk management, demonstrating the recent diversification and constant growth of the sector. Insurance, finance and industrial companies are looking for highly qualified people to develop appropriate strategies to protect firms from financial and operational risks. The MIRM staff provides guidance in targeting positions based on function, sector, company typology and geographical location aiming to fulfil both participantÂ’s attitude and companiesÂ’ needs.

PLACEMENT RESULTS

Only 3 months after the end of the course, over 90% of graduates had found a job position in line with their aspirations. However our career service receives a high number of job offers: we are able to satisfy only 60% of them. This demonstrates the high and rising interest shown by the business world for our graduates.

24 A typical day at School

Lunchtime is coming! We feel the scent of the various kinds of pastas. Let s go to have lunch. Una lasagna, una insalata, cinque e cinquanta, buon appetito

Zsolt Nemeth MIRM 2005

Bus no.11 wends its way to Palazzo Ferdinandeo with three Hungarians aboard, among them me. All of us are daydreaming about the study-tour we took in Munich a couple of days ago. But we have no time to let our imagination run too far, because at the next stop the some other MIRM guys are taking the same bus, and the never-ending story starts again. How was the presentation ? Do you remember when .? Did you finish the project work ..? In a few minutes we arrive at the prestigious MIB School of Management building, and the day has just started. In the cafeteria the essential Italian coffee is waiting for us with nutella-filled doughnuts. Professor Pitacco s slides are ready to help us to memorize life insurance techniques - mortality tables, technical reserves, safety loading, probabilities, death benefit ..what? Before, I thought that the expression life techniques - as we say - is about having fun, enjoying life. But now I know that the risk of our life is something different. How can you prepare for the challenges of life? Are you able to face the obstacles? Should you take the risk? I m dreaming while Tom - my Slovenian friend - asks questions, and Francesco makes notes continuously . And we get deeper and deeper into the beautiful actuarial science of life insurance.

And now ladies and gentlemen, Professor Tim Baxter shows us during the afternoon lectures, the efficient way of presentation, intercultural negotiation, one by one communication. Later we can utilize the team-building roles given by him, when we are working on our project. As we get closer and closer to the deadline, we really look like a real group. We complement each other, and it works. Everybody knows what to do, how to reach the key goal. The computer lab is getting silent and empty; it s time to leave the school. Let s quickly check the emails. Oops, 2 reminders! Tomorrow I ll have an appointment, to clarify the circumstances of my internship. Important! Be prepared! Reminder No.2: Tonight calcio at Luigi s place. Let s see: Italian football, Luana s super-delicious Italian food, Italian wine. What else do we need? We know that we will not be missing anything when friends are together. I almost forgot some minor details. I m Zsolt Nemeth from Hungary, participating in the Master in Insurance and Risk Management - MIRM6. Take the risk, my friends!

25 Alumni Association

The SchoolÂ’s Alumni Association is a focal point for MIRM graduates. The Association aims to encourage, develop and consolidate ties between alumni of the various editions and programmes, as well as between the alumni and MIB School of Management itself. 26 Trieste: in the heart of Europe

Thanks to its history, its role and geographical position, Trieste is a natural point of reference for the new Europe. It has always been a city with a very strong multicultural and international calling: an economic and cultural crossroads, a cosmopolitan centre since the Habsburg era, where over the centuries many different religions, cultures, languages and economic activities have flourished and co-existed.

An openness and richness that continues today in numerous institutions and companies at the highest international levels, operating in finance and insurance (Assicurazioni Generali, Lloyd Adriatico, RAS, etc.), science (Area Science Park, Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati SISSA, Centro Internazionale di Fisica Teorica, Laboratorio di Luce al Sincrotrone, ecc.), production (illycaffè, Fincantieri, Stock, ecc.) and logistics (Pacorini Group, Porto di Trieste, Lloyd Triestino).

27

In this context, course participants experience in a really liveable city, where the quality of life is among the highest and most appreciated in Italy. In 2005 Trieste was ranked first for its quality of life by Il Sole 24 Ore, leading Italian financial newspaper. The city has in fact maintained a rich legacy of cultural institutions, theatres, museums, libraries, and historical cafĂŠs that make its central European atmosphere unique and full of life. The cityÂ’s special position, between the sea and the Carso highlands, a few kilometres from the Alps,

make it the ideal scenario for a number of activities linked to leisure, trips out of town and sport: from sailing to diving, from mountain bike rides to trekking, from mountaineering to a simple walk in the woods, all just a few minutes from the city centre. Openness, cosmopolitanism, quality of life: the legacy of the past that Trieste experiences today and projects into the future. Sharing these distinctive aspects and being part of them makes MIB School of Management truly unique.

28 Extra Curricular Activities

Various extra-curricular activities are organised to broaden the MIRM experience. These activities involve not only MIRM participants but also participants on other programmes, teaching staff and graduates from past years. Although participation is not compulsory, it is an important part of what makes MIRM a unique experience. Typical activities that run through the year include nights at the theatre, screening original language films and guided tours to sights and exhibitions. Sports also play a leading role in social activities with football, volleyball and skiing being particularly popular pastimes.
