jay_jxy@163.com 2020

Before I was introduced to the discipline of architecture, architecture to me was a place that could provide shelter to people, where people lived and worked, and where almost all human activities were inseparable from architecture. And after completing five years of architectural studies, I have a deeper understanding of architecture, which can have a huge impact on people, cities and the natural environment. Most of the buildings I have come across have been designed for people, and in the design process we must focus on people, studying their behaviour, their feelings towards the building and their needs, and only when we have studied these thoroughly can we design an efficient architectural space. In addition, people's needs change over time, and the function and even the form of a building will change in response to people's needs.

Based on my understanding of architecture, I have selected a few design works about people and architecture, people and cities, and people and nature to create this portfolio, which serves as a summary of my five years of undergraduate study, and a new starting point for my study of architecture.

THE LIFE FROM HUMAN TO TOWER

Hebei University of Technology.Tianjin.China

Project type : Individual, Academic, Architecture

Data : 2021.5 - 2021.7

ABSTRACT

This project aims to explore the projection of human individual consciousness in the form and function of the building through the study of human individual consciousness under extreme circumstances. Using the method of translating and organizing the architectural form and space of the characteristics of different generations of people, a complete architectural system with metabolism is finally formed.

The duty of the fire watcher is to observe whether there is a fire within 20 kilometers from the watchtower and report the fire in time. Since there is no complete infrastructure around the forest area, all living materials of them are mainly distributed by people outside the forest area and collected in the forest by themselves.

They are alone on the watchtower, there are many fire watchers who usually stay for years or even decades, and when they retire, the next generation will take their jobs and continue to perform their duties. It is a continuous cycle. Over time, the tower became their spiritual sustenance.

MUSEUM OF EMOTIONS

Hebei University of Technology.Tianjin.China

Project type : Individual, Academic, Architecture

Date : 2021.11 - 2022.1

ABSTRACT

This project is a film translation project in which the protagonist of the film goes through eight main mood changes, analysing the main factors influencing each mood and finally using these elements to translate the various moods into architectural spaces. The combination of these architectural spaces creates a museum of emotions in which visitors can feel the effect of space on their emotions, such as dark and narrow spaces that make them feel depressed and scared, bright and open spaces that make them feel relaxed and happy.

ANALYSIS OF THE EMOTION ELEMENTS

POSSIBILITIES OF SPATIAL RECONSTRUCTION

Introduction to the Research Subject Reconstruction Methods

Among the classic architectural works of the past, it is not difficult to find many architectural spaces that can influence people’s emotions, such as Tadao Ando’s Church of Light which can make people spontaneously feel serene and solemn. The various elements that influence people’s emotions in architectural spaces are the subject of my research.

The previous analysis broke down the six basic emotions into four types of elements that influence the emotional feeling of a space, and then reorganised these elements to create a variety of spaces with different emotional feelings.

When different emotions change, the brain waves of a person change accordingly. In related studies, it is stated that different elements in space can also cause different brain wave changes in people, thus affecting their emotions.

Changes in human brain waves in different linear spaces.

Brainwave and emotions corresponding to different spatial orders.

Brainwave and emotions corresponding to different levels of spatial openness.

Spatial scale versus human scale, producing different brain waves and emotions.

MAIN FILM LINE DEVELOPMENTS Plot Summary

The protagonist is a new teacher at a school for the deaf, who gradually discovers that the school is controlled by a dark leadership, in which the deaf children are violated by the evil headmaster but no one speaks up for them, so he steps up to save them. The emotional changes of the protagonist during the process is the main line of this design.

Eight emotional nodes were first extracted from the development of the film’s plot, and then these eight emotions were reconstructed and translated in combination with the four types of emotion-related spatial elements mentioned above. In turn, the following abstract geometric combination was obtained.

BEWILDERED

In the film, the new teacher arrives at the school and interacts with the students for the first time, expecting a very pleasant start, but instead the students are stone-faced and don’t want to talk much. This leaves the enthusiastic teacher at a loss as to how to integrate with the children. Each child feels like they are locked in their own space and to get to know each child you have to go through every door ......

After passing through the entrance space visitors come to this labyrinth space, following the arrows on the wall and the light and shadows on the floor to find the entrance to the next space.

FEARFUL

In the film, the young girl who is being bullied by the headmaster hides in a bathroom stall, while the headmaster begins to look for the girl and check every stall, the sound of the door opening gets closer and closer, and the fear in the girl’s heart grows, she wanted to escape, but there was nothing she could do but sit quietly and experience the sensation of being surrounded by fear, as if all hope is lost in the abyss……

The meditation space is fishbone shaped, with visitors passing through a long passage in the middle to each of the small, dim meditation chambers.

ANGRY

In the film, the protagonist becomes very calm after being extremely angry, because all the anger has been remembered and will never be erased. Every evil deed done by the teachers in the school is like a tombstone in the protagonist’s mind, and in the future he will make the evil ones suffer.

This space is made up of several boulders with slogans reflecting the most prominent issues of today's society.

03 GROW IN CHAOS

Hebei University of Technology.Tianjin.China

Project type: Individual, Academic, Architecture

Data : 2021.8 - 2021.10

ABSTRACT

By constructing a modular system of rural self-circulation system, this design conforms to the trend of self-building houses, improves the environment and the quality of life in rural areas, and saves the disappearing intangible cultural heritage, so that China's rural culture can be revitalized again and passed on.

THE FIRST PROBLEM OF COUNTRYSIDES

At present, a large part of China’s rural areas lack reasonable planning, so that all kinds of self-built houses appear everywhere in the countryside. Some of these self-built houses are produced in accordance with the local culture, while some are purely Imitating European-style buildings. The buildings produced by these imitations have severely damaged the local context, so that many traditional architectural cultures can no longer be passed on.The ease of construction of reinforced concrete buildings makes the next generation unwilling to continue to learn the complex methods of traditional Chinese wooden construction, so that many intangible cultural heritage gradually disappeared in the long river of history.

THE SECOND PROBLEM OF COUNTRYSIDES

In addition, there are also many problems with self-built houses in rural areas. Farmers don't have much money to build a complete house. Therefore, many farmers build a part of the house after earning part of money. If the funds are not available in the middle, Some farmers live directly in these unfinished houses, which there're many hidden problems.

The modular system integrates the functions of management, health, education, construction, agricultural production, cultural inheritance, energy regeneration and so on, and eventually forms a self-recycling system, which can solve the existing problems in rural areas, improve the quality of life in rural areas, and drive the development of rural areas.

This folding board is easy to install and disassemble. It is also easy to transport. It is transported in the form of a folded board from the factory and can be conveniently used when it is unfolded.

The technology required for this structure is not complicated, and the cost is low. When the structure is discarded, the materials can be recycled and reused.

The biggest advantage of this structure is that it can be folded, thereby freeing up space and making the space have more possibility to be used.

GAUDI LA COMA ARTISTS’ RESIDENCES

Hebei University of Technology.Tianjin.China

Project type : Individual, Academic, Architecture

Date : 2022.7 - 2022.10

ABSTRACT

The project is based on Gaudi's idea of naturalism. Straight lines are created by man, while curves belong to God. In nature there are no perfect straight lines, everything is made of curves. The scheme draws inspiration from coral, which serves as a shelter for a large number of marine creatures and, by extension, for the human community as well. By organising the behaviour of the people and the functions of the building, a complete system of community functioning is formed, allowing the artists living in it and the visitors to have a better experience of being close to nature.
