GREEN SPINE DWELLINGS
studio 5 construction study period 2 2015 Bachelor of Architecture
Based upon Damian Madigan’s research ‘The Missing Middle’, ‘Green Spine Dwellings’ is the result of design explorations into infill suburban housing using existing Adelaide villas and cottages.
Following group modelling workshop and exploration of larger scale designs across existing residences, Green Spine Dwellings is a residential infill exploration, combining 2 adjacent residential sites with villas in Dulwich with the aim to increasing density to over 60 dwellings/hectare, whilst respecting the existing villas where possible to follow existing council guidelines on maintaining existing local character.
Throughout the project, material and construction-based design decisions through hand-drawing and Revit formed the backbone of the design process, naturally leading to highly detailed levels of resolution in the project.
Using design principles from Dr. Madigan’s research, Green Spine Dwellings was able to achieve a total of 8 ‘dwellings’ across the combined sites: 2 flexible office spaces, 4 double storey residences that may accommodate single-child families comfortably, a cafe’, plenty of public and private green space and car parking spaces to accommodate.
The project gets its namesake
from the central ‘spine’ of green spine along the former boundary between each individual site. All internal public spaces have views to external greening, and the residences at the back of the site have access to their own individual private garden spaces and a shared community garden. Additionally, the existing front yard space is extended onto the footpath, allowing for more landscape space and 90’ parking from the street.

THE FACTORY
studio 8 construction
study period 5 2016 Master of Architecture
Integrating the former Mitsubishi Motors building next to Tonsley’s Main Assembly Building, ‘The Factory’ is the result of a 4-person group construction design studio and development of professional group work practices.
Parallel to initial precedent analysis, the first stage of the studio was spent developing an ‘office profile’ that the group would work under, which we dubbed “H3K” (using the first letter of the team’s last names: Hebart, Hill, Hsu and Khaliq). Next, was the development of a group contract and shared file database that H3K would use as a baseline for good work practice throughout the semester.
Utilizing Renewal SA’s 2016 iteration of the design guidelines for the Tonsley District Masterplan, the Factory was intended to have a commerical/light industrial program. However H3K wanted to take advantage of the site’s advantageous positioning as one of the first buildings visitors to the Tonsley District would see if entering from South Road. As such, public and education facilities were also integrated.
My role within the group was ‘construction and sustainability supervisor’: checking group member’s work against BCA and NCC standards, designing primarily in sections and
construction details, as well as integrating passive and low maintenance design strategies where possible.
The design ethos was to literally re-wrap the existing concrete structure in different facades to communicate different internal programs: a porous brick slip skin around the eastern side for public and learning facilities, simple inset glass for offices, and danpalon polycarbonate on the west for the large manufactury spaces. Landscaping further softens the thresholds between interior and exterior inviting people in to observe manufacturing processes.

INTRODUCTION
ENTENDROUS PYROPHYTE
studio 9 & 10 integration
study period 2 & 5 2017
Master of Architecture
The final studio project of my Master’s degree, the Entendrous Pyrophyte was the result of a year’s worth of exploration into the place of bushfires in Australia’s landscape culture and the phenomenon’s potential impacts on architecture as their frequency and intensity are projected to increase due to climate change. Combining research into existing bushfire legislation, construction codes, as well as a variety of design and material exploration the key intent of the project is twofold: to provide community and research facilities aimed at bushfires and mitigation strategies, but also as a major node in a proposed landscaping ‘barrier’ including nature preservation, walking trails,
public space and sites for controlled burns. Combining these two intents results in spaces with the aspiration to balance awareness of bushfires, not just as a destructive force, but also as an important aspect in Australian landscape identity.

RESEARCH & INVESTIGATION
Preliminary investigations and mapping exercises within the themes of EXCESS and BOUNDARIES revealed two major issues that would later become the primary focii of the Entendrous Pyrophyte project: an excessive amount of green space integrated into urban and suburban fabric of Canberra, which in turn creates a major bushfire risk. Consequently, the Canberra Spatial Plan puts an emphasis on bushfire mitigation strategies parallel to the need for future expansion.
Typically, more green space in built environments is encouraged on a variety of levels; health, aesthetic, land value etc. however in this case, the amount of vegetated space
in Canberra actually strays into dangerous territories, and has been a major contributing factor of bushfires in Canberra, including the 2003 fire which resulted in over 70% of the Australian Capital Territory being destroyed. 14 years on, the suburb of Denman Prospect is undergoing development as the next major urban/suburban precinct of Canberra, but just so happens to also be located on land that has previously been scorched by major bushfires.
This being said, bushfires have a place in the Australian landscape and concurring cultures. Certain prominent species of flora and fauna such as eucalyptus, banksia and sand monitors actually require fire
in order to thrive. Before and after Australia’s colonization, Aboriginal communities would use controlled burning as a means of managing the landscape, as well as a means of promoting growth of certain vegetation and animals for food and other necessities. Therefore it is the Entendrous Pyrophyte’s intention to bring attention to these traits of bushfires as an important ecological factor.

THE FINAL PROJECT
The site is located in a forest clearing on the boundary of Stromlo and Denman Prospect approximately 10 kilometres west of the Canberra CBD. In its prototype stage, the Entendrous Pyrophyte was a rectilinear building drawing upon watchtower and bunker typologies in order to reflect the need to survey the surrounding landscape, and the need to retreat and seek shelter from bushfires respectively. Due to a desire to reduce visual impact to the site, the watchtower aspect is delivered as a viewing platform as a trailhead to a proposed extension to existing walking trails. The overall form of the buildings follow the existing contour lines of the site, with internal floor plates being
stepped to create a stronger sense of place and reduction of site impact.
A north-facing cafe’ links with a nature play-space with amenities accessible internally and externally to connect with existing walking trails. On the eastern side of the main building is a slightly submerged gallery that makes up the ‘bunker’ aspect of the brief. Above it flexible spaces are interpreted as classrooms or seminar spaces, which connect to a small lecture theatre via a small internal bridge. Public and private building functions are split with a central service core: on the southern and western sides of the building are the administration and
research facilities respectively. The research section includes labs for testing and analysis of bushfire mitigation and postdisaster strategies.

FISH RIVER RANGER ACCOMMODATION
As part of re-developing Aboriginal Ranger’s accommodation in Fish River, Northern Territory, the UniSA Design-Construct Program required multiple groups of students to develop and construct the project at the UniSA Mawson Lakes workshops before shipping the pre-fabricated design to site.
Within a 2-week period, my group was responsible for the test construction of 4 central modules that would serve as bedding and storage for short and long term Rangers before the components could be sent to site. Building upon previous student progress with reports as reference. The majority of plywood
components had already been machined, so our job was to physical put the modules together and ensure they were structurally sound. However, inconsistencies between physical components and the documentation were evident almost immediately, so a stocktake was the first stage of the workshop period.
Using a coding system to determine which components still needed to be made and processed, the majority of the time spent in the workshop was spent designing the actual construction process and designing small details such as storage compartment door hinges. Ordering additional components and cutting new

pieces at the CNC workshop at UniSA’s City West campus . The construction phase in the workshop consisted of a lot of strong-arming and forcing pieces into place as some plywood components were severely bowed, and required screws to hold the finished product together despite original intentions to simply slot pieces together.
The result was a successful inworkshop construction of all four joinery-bedding modules, development of an components schedule, and a report on the group’s project for reference at the on-site construction phase at Fish River, Northern Territory.

PHARMACY HOUSE (OSAKA STUDY TOUR)
With increase in dwelling density being inevitable, Australia faces the issue of adapting beyond the prominent single dwellings and high rise apartments. This study tour’s aim was to explore the possibilities that the Nagaya typology (traditional Japanese row housing) might offer through a 6 day cross-cultural design studio.
The group brief (where each group consists of at least 2 University of South Australia students, and 2 Osaka City University students) was to adapt a vacant 56m2 row house in Osaka into an international student dormitory for at least 3 students.
AAD Study Tour (Osaka, Japan)
study period 6 2018
Our site was a double front, Nagaya facing a pedestrian laneway and street. The lane itself was described as ‘legally ambiguous’ which allowed us to playfully bend the rules and integrate pop-out window seat from the ground floor.
The project drew inspiration from a number of architectural sites around Osaka such as Tadao Ando’s “House in Nipponbashi” and the Suehiro Nagaya by Takehara & Koike Laboratory, such as how each precedent handled insideoutside thresholds, as well as delicate altering of levels to clarify differences in internal spaces as well.
Due to language barriers and a
limited knowledge on Japanese design conventions, the project was kept simple with most of the focus going towards streamlining the ground floor interior using traditional Japanese grid construction systems. A central corridor is accessed from both sides of the house, with the main entry moved to the pedestrian alley due to a steep drop between the main street footpath and the ground floor interior. A small but flexible dining/living area faces the alley with fixed ‘seating’ along the central ‘corridor’ and window seats. As a design compensation for moving the main entry, a timber screen with integrated seating wraps around the external corner.

ST MARTIN DE PORRES (STAGE 2)
BROWN FALCONER
Located on an elevated site in Sheidow Park, Stage 2 works of Stage Martin de Porres continues on previous work done by Brown Falconer. With consideration to the heavily sloped site and use of existing transportable classrooms, two new extensions were constructed: multidisciplinary learning spaces for junior primary students, and an enclosed common area for middle primary students replacing the covered outdoor area.
Extensive and precise on-site measurement was required due to the nature of the additional facilities, specifically the middle primary school commons as it is situated between the existing school hallway, and the transportables orientated
45 degrees from the rest of the campus buildings. 4 junior primary learning spaces were added onto existing classrooms with a central commons corridor that is orientated towards the middle school commons. Simple but bespoke roof angles and angled soffits transitioning into the classroom spaces above high strip windows cover the junior primary learning spaces with a feeling of lightness in the building form, lending visual consistency to the Learning Centre constructed in Stage 1 works.
Bespoke shelving joinery was designed around the curved walls between the junior commons and learning spaces, as well as between the small level change between the
middle primary transportables and open plan commons space. The latter consists of open shelf bag storage on the lower side and fixed seating on the higher level for presentations and activities. Additionally, cupboards acting as storage and an operable ‘teaching wall’ with AV facilities were also designed.
In addition to conducting site measurements, architectural modelling and documentation, ongoing visual development of the project was also conducted with Lumion.

RESTHAVEN BERRI
BROWN FALCONER
Located in Berri, SA, this small scale renovation project of a 1920’s bank building serves as Resthaven’s new Community Services office, with staff relocating from the old office in Loxton.
Primarily housing facilities for Resthaven staff such as offices, a kitchenette and overnight stay, the project also encapsulates rooms for clinical consultants and activity rooms for the elderly.
Due to the heritage requirements to retain as much of the existing frontage and poor street entry conditions, the client entry was required to be moved to the side of the building to comply with ambulant access.
civil / aged care documentation & admin
2019 - 2020
The development of DA, tender and construction drawings were done under the supervision of 3 separate team leaders on account of the first leader moving elsewhere, and the second retiring. As such, the task of justifying previous design discussions via correspondence was often left to me.
Following the completion of construction drawings, the task of contract administration (specifically, the handling of liaising with interior finishes, RFIs, Variations and Progress Claims) was also done under supervision of a team leader.
Limited time on site (in part due to the greater driving distance, as well as COVID restrictions at the time), many critical
construction issues had to be resolved over the phone with builders who were on-site during the contract administration phase.

GOLDEN GROVE HIGH SCHOOL
BROWN FALCONER
Development on the Golden Grove High School sees new buildings for year 7-8 students in the form of new learning areas, as well as Performance spaces and a Year 12 lounge.
In addition to assisting with the documentation of construction drawings - namely reviewing slab setout drawings, floor and ceiling finishes and internal elevations - the opportunity to develop the concepts for this school’s signage and decal package was presented, allowing for experimentation in communicating the driving concept in visual ways beyond conventional architecture.
The decal designs followed the driving design concept of the morphology of a leaf: a central line (the petiole or stem)
with a small variety of shapes sprouting from it (representing leaves, or the lamina of a leaf). Building on this concept with the use of shades of green, yellow, orange and blue, as well as solid shapes combined with half-tone patterns created the resulting design.

DOMINICAN MASTERPLAN
BROWN FALCONER
The Dominican School masterplan sort to generate potential design directions regarding the handling of existing building stock that included building services that were at the end of their lifespan and a 2 story heritage building facing the main street.
Typically, masterplan documents were presented utilizing the standard practice of architectural plans, elevations and sections but an opportunity to explore a different method to communicate design moves in a streamlined fashion was presented.
As existing drawings and surveys of the site were readily available, it was proposed to create axonometric drawings to communicate design intentions
to the client. Architectural Plans communicate site and building layout. Elevations communicate building envelope and character more effectively. In standard architectural workflows, both types of drawings are derived from the same model in software such as Revit.
Axonometric Drawings communicate aspects of both, but do take more time to develop with building components such as roofing needing to be required, which is why 3D representations aren’t typically considered in early design stages. However, having existing drawings of the entire site available allowed for a quick and efficient generation of a 3D model. Such moves included the
improvement of entry conditions from the main street and the Kiss & Drop, removal of existing transportables on site to connect external play space with internal courtyards, and proposed improvements to said play spaces.
Despite the visual effectiveness of 3D diagrams, their limits were realized when it came to communicating the internal layouts of existing buildings. As such, diagrammatic plans were utilized to communicate internal rearrangement of classrooms and staff facilities.
