ABOUT

ABOUT THE BOOK

At the beginning of each chapter unit, we are introduced to the chapter with a full bleed landing page, designed specifically to introduce a series of drawings grouped based on a similar concept or idea. The organization and grouping of content for the drawings were based under two main principles. First and foremost, the content of the drawings are thematically-driven. For instance, the first two drawings look at prehistoric drawings of animals and humans, both drawn within a timeline. Similarly, the last three drawings also flow according to the theme of delivering data through infographics. The second principle for organization were to organize the drawings by the same or very similar color scheme after following the first principle. For example, the “Culture and Religion” section was organized in the same chapter unit because it first follows a similar theme but the drawings also follow a similar color palette. Both countries’ flags, Israel’s and Honduras’s, match the same color scheme with a dark, ocean blue background. Hence, the choice to group “Culture and Religion” in the same category.

THE BEGINNING OF TIMES

2

The first drawing depicts a timeline drawing from the Early Paleozoic Era, where my partner and I drew the first three periods of this era: Cambrian Period, Ordovician Period, and Silurian, accordingly. 541 to 485 million years ago, the drawing depicts the oxygen level changes and the relationship it had with the rising sea levels. Furthemore, the species that existed are also drawn, and by followings their lines in both x and y directions, one can notice the time around scientists predict their extinction. The second drawing also follows this same timeline theme, but in a more three-dimensional world. The drawing focuses on the Upper Paleolithic Period, about 40,000 to 20,000 years ago, which is the third and last subdivision of the Paleolithic or Old Stone Age. In this era, some of the first humans, the Neandarthals and Homosapiens had conflicts within each other. In the drawing, my partner focused on the background content of the drawing, such as the environment, the sky, the mountains and the ocean while I focused on the foreground such as the cliff, the humans, the earth strata and the cave. After having things set together, we combined the drawings and postproduced them together to make the color scheme match better. THE BEGINNING

THE AXIS PO WERS THE ALLIED POWERS

3 As part of the mid-term drawing, this series of drawings took multiple steps of going back and forth to obtain the desired results, such as obtaining the license of some of these models online, while others were modeled in Rhino 3D. Linework was also added on top of the renders. Once the models were set in place and experimented with different views, I rendered them in VRay and postproduced them in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The individual, colored propaganda posters were designed in Rhino 3D and postproduced in Adobe Illustrator. These were added to the rendered cities during war times in a comic-style theme to display propaganda of events happening in major Erupean and American cities from the 1940s to 1960s . I focused on the Allied Powers, while my partner focused on the Axis Powers (a different series of drawings not in this booklet). WAR PROPAGANDA

CULTURE & RELIGION

CULTURE & RELIGION

4

The first drawing focuses on religion: Judaism. For this drawing, we were asked to draw and produce our own vectors of a religion of our choice. I chose Judaism because I wanted to research more about one of the three Abrahamic religions where I have the least knowledge about. Christianity and Islam being the other two. I wanted to divide the drawing by symbols, people and places. Judaism, it turns out, has different branches such as orthodox and conservative, and each region in the world seems to have a slightly different way to express this religion through cultural customs.

I chose to collage Honduran culture mainly because I am Honduran myself, and I think most people do not know about Central American culture and the beauties that lie within this region of the Americas. Among the various ethnic groups within the different regions in Honduras, I wanted to focus on historic architecture in the nation, major heroes and symbols of independence such as Indio Lempira, Francisco Morazรกn, and the recent activist and environmentalist, Berta Cรกceres, who was killed on March of 2016 by government military after months of threats due to her movements for the environment and the corruption against major habitats in the country. 2018: FIRES & EXTINCTION

5 It is highly notable that 2018 was driven by a violent mother nature or under the influence of man’s greed, and, in this chapter, we focus purely on fires and the effects that these have in nature. The first and second drawings map the 2018 California wildfires and the most devastating wildfires in American history. The third drawing, is an infographics designed to conduct an analysis of Brazil’s endangered Spix Macaw. The last sighting of this macaw in the wild was in 2000 and back again in 2016. Additionally, this drawing also tracks the increase of men-induced fires in Brazil in recent times, especifically in 2001, 2010 and the recent 2019 Amazonian fires. These were tracked by using sources such as Rainforests Mongabay, Telegraph UK, USA Today, National Geographic and Global Forest Watch. These sources were used to trace the areas mapped in the sources and reproduced in Rhino 3D to re-display. The fourth and last drawing is also an infographics of the 2018 Guatemala Volcanic Eruption, which focuses in the statistics of the colossal damage done by Fuego’s eruption. 2018: FIRES & EXTINCTION

WORLD POVERTY

6 This infographics about poverty used sources from worldbank.org, finca.org, results.org and oxfamamerica.org. The design for this poster took inspiration from a photo of a slums settlement adjacent to the rich district in Manila. This division between the rich and the poor inspired me to draw the earth globe with the rich skyscrapers on one side of the globe, and the upside down of the globe we see the poor dwellings. This idea of the upside down of the poor and the upper top for the rich was significant inspiration to reflect on how society has always operated. WORLD POVERTY
