Phoenix Sky Train People Mover Phoenix, Az
The phoenix PHX Sky Train includes three elevated passenger stations that link the Phoenix region’s METRO light rail station with the airport’s remote parking and terminal 4. The organization of the system is designed to be intuitive and create a high level of service and convenience for passengers and the surrounding community. The electrically powered, automated PHX Sky Train is expected to reduce the airport’s greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 6,000 tons annually and will consume 30 percent less power than comparable projects. The project has been awarded LEED Gold Certification and has further established PHX as the state’s largest economic engine. I served as lead designer on Sky Train for a duration of nearly three years, overseeing all aspects of its development while functioning as the main client contact. Completion: 2013

View of Sacred Tree
Reliance Corporation Mumbai, India
Upon completion, this LEED platinum development will consolidate the offices of Reliance into one global headquarters building. While energy generation and distribution make up Reliance’s core business unit, it was paramount to the client that the design be grounded in innovation and express a responsible attitude towards the environment and consumption. A number of strategies were used to achieve this goal, the most pronounced being an expansive array of photovaltaic panels hovering over the majority of the site. The plan was developed around a constraint posed by a single tree located near the center of the site. For over 40 years the 'sacred' tree has served as a crucial migratory stop for some of India’s protected cranes. Completion: tbd View From Highway EAST | PERSPECTIVE

I Functioned as senior designer for the rehabilitation and restoration of the airport’s historic 1941 terminal building and expansion project. The goal for the renewed airport was to give passengers a uniquely southern California experience. Inspired by the simplicity of case study homes, I strove to employ a language that projected a modest and elegant expression, thus showing deference to the existing terminal. A large central outdoor garden runs nearly half the length of the concourse linking both the north and south hold-room buildings. The garden, which contributes to the concourse’s relaxed, resort feel, features signature palm trees, drought resistant planting and fire pits. This project has received various design and industry awards and has become a source of pride and recognition for the community. Completion: 2012

25 M Street
Roof Event Space
Washington DC
Occupying the prominent corner of Half and M Street, this trophy class office tower will function as the northern anchor to the city’s fast developing half street corridor. The site has prime access to the city’s metro and riverfront but most notable is its proximity to National’s Park. At only two blocks away the building is designed to take advantage of this unique proximity. Intersecting a conventional floor plate is a copper clad rectangular mass that extends over the sidewalk on the south to capture direct views into the ballpark. The exterior expression of the building is reflective of the client’s desire to move away from a more conventional market approach and instead draws inspiration from surrounding industrial brick warehouses. The team employed creative and thoughtful detailing to ensure a contemporary expression of materials on an otherwise traditional building palette. Estimated Completion: 2019 44th Street Station
Main Lobby
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s Petroleum Institute campus sits divided by the city’s main elevated highway and thus presents a unique challenge. How does one present an unified image for the institution amid such an abrupt separation? The design team really saw this as a gateway opportunity and relied on the roofs of each precinct to create not only a visual dialogue between each side but also a statement about what the future of this institution is. ●● On the north campus, the program elements of the Master Plan included the Natatorium, the Male Student Hostel Building, the Community Centre, Café, and related Parking plus Athletic Fields. ●● On the south campus, the program elements include the Student Centre consisting of Conference Centre & Auditorium, Male Student Centre, Bank and Post Office, Parking Structure, and the campus Mosque. The roofs of the Natatorium and Student Centre are both comprised of three-dimensional truss work supporting expansive array's of photovoltaics. It was surprising to discover that despite being a company founded on petroleum based engineering, ADNOC remains committed to diversifying their energy offerings and is investing heavily in more sustainable alternatives. Each building expresses this commitment architecturally and employs both conventional passive solutions (overhangs, screens) as well as more advanced approaches such as 80' tall solar chimneys. these will provide all the hot water for the dormitory , student center and natatorium. Similar to USGBC Abu Dhabi employs ESTIDAMA, who's guidelines provide detailed requirements for the life cycle of a project- from design through operation.

Kioicho Tower Osaka, Japan
The Kioicho Tower competition took it’s inspiration from the site’s venerated cherry blossom trees (Sakura) considered to be some of the oldest and most beautiful in Japan. The unusually five petal organization of the blossoms informed the dimensional, geometric facade giving it the potential to become an indelible gateway building into the city.

Changsha City Complex Furong District, China
The Changsha Dongpailou Complex brings together a rich variety of environments and experiences. Comprising over ten million square feet, office high-rises, apartments and a hotel are all integrated with a series of unique shopping areas and entertainment venues. The development is connected by a dynamic retail path that flows between the western subway and shopping districts to the south. The architecture evokes the regions most notable landmarks- the sandstone spires of of the nearby Wulinguan National Park and the Xiang River. Soaring above the city a 330 meter tall office tower becomes the natural anchor of the development and sits with it’s broadside facing the river. If constructed, this development will represent the largest installation of double skin facades in the world and one of the world’s largest green roofs. View from Xiang River

Saudi Arabia As part of an ambitious effort to establish a new mining operation in northern Saudi Arabia, HOK was hired to master plan a new city center to accommodate 10,000 workers and their families. Program pieces included all the necessary elements of civic life - apartments, single family homes, shopping centers, fire houses, clinics, and mosques. I was responsible for the concept design of the daily mosque and civic center structures as well as various housing types. Gaining an understanding of how Saudi culture influences the planning of their communities was a fascinating process.

FreeLight Light Delivery System A typical building’s exterior comprises 35 percent vision glass and 65 percent something else. The utilization of glass is understood, but how can we better utilize the majority surface? As part of a product design competition I conceived an exterior wall system capable of harvesting natural light that falls on this ‘majority’ surface. Daylight is collected from the southern façade of a building (in the northern hemisphere) with vacuum formed reflectors and lenses built into spandrel panels. The lenses focus sunlight into fiber optic cables running inside the ceiling plenum without interference to duct work, structure, or plumbing. These cables can run effectively up to 70 feet and terminate into luminaires for natural full spectrum light distribution in areas not adjacent to exterior windows. All of this is done without moving parts or electricity, thus reducing heat generation, cost and system maintenance.
