Tree Irrigation Tree irrigation systems are an essential tool to guarantee the success of urban planted trees. Lack of water at the tree’s root ball can be detrimental to the lifespan and survival of the tree. It is recommended that when an urban tree is planted a tree irrigation system is put in place to ensure the tree receives the best start. INTRODUCTION Pinderfield Hospital in Wakefield West Yorkshire is a brand new, state-of-the-art healthcare facility. The hospital is split over two blocks, five floors on each block covering 88,000m2. The project was completed in April 2010 with the Mona Plant System being some of the last installations on site.

This results in improved root development and optimal plant growth. The MPS system can be installed in ‘Tank’ format, a self contained reservoir, a ‘Link’ format for larger scale projects, ‘Rings’ for tree pit irrigation or even ‘Modules’ for portable self irrigating plant displays. The MPS links and rings were specifically selected for this project due to the location of the planters within the new hospital. Many of the planters are situated on balconies and public areas on several different floors that are not always accessible. By installing the Mona Plant System, the frequency of watering is greatly reduced ensuring the longevity of the plants.

Mona Plant System

Mona Plant System - How it works

Plants use water to keep their roots, stems, leaves and flowers healthy and to prevent them from drying out and wilting.

Generally, plants get their water from the ground. This means that the plant has to transport the water from its roots up throughout the rest of the plant. How does it do this? Water moves through the soil to the plant by means of capillary action. Capillary action occurs when the forces binding a liquid together and the forces attracting that bound liquid to another surface are greater than the force of gravity.

Mona Plant System (MPS) is an advanced, well proven and easy to use subterranean irrigation system. It is the cost effective and environmentally friendly solution for both interior and exterior landscaping. MPS ensures that water and nutrients are delivered in the right quantity to the root of the plants, resulting in improved root development and optimal plant growth.

Water is added using the filler pipe to reach the reservoirs below the tree.

Roots absorb water through capilliary action

Through the process of capillary action the Mona System is able to irrigate the roots of plants in an area of 40cm dia and 20cm upwards from each capillary leg, providing water, air & nutrients to exactly where it is required... the roots. Giving the plants a more natural pattern of feeding resulting in stronger healthier plants and blooms.

FACT: The Mona System was developed in Sweden over 25 years ago. Many of the original systems still remain in place today.

Capilliary legs provide outlets for water to be absorbed by the soil.

The MPS Links make up an essential component of the Mona Plant System. The links act as a reservoir to hold water and distribute to the plants roots as and when required. The Mona Plant System is a 100%, water efficient, sub-terranean irrigation system, ideal for landscaped areas, hard to access areas and highly trafficked areas. It is versatile with a variety of applications.

The MPS Ring forms a ring around the rootball to ensure optimal growth. The Mona Relief Vente a lockable, cast aluminium filler pipe cap can be installed with the MPS Rings.

They are normally fixed into containerised plant and trees and through the process of capillary action feed the plant where it needs water the most- at its roots. Tree roots require space, nutrients, moisture and oxygen to thrive. The RootCell system has been developed following consultation with landscape architects, local authorities and leading tree experts. The concept is simple – RootCells provide a load bearing structure preventing the soil from becoming compacted and lifeless. gt Dales Collection Tree Guards are hand made in the UK, and manufactured from UK sourced, mild carbon steel. They are supplied in 2 halves, each half a fully welded construction. The two halves then bolt together around the tree forming a complete guard. gt Tree guards can be made with either a ground fixing or bolt fixing, the latter allows them to be fixed directly to the support frames supplied with gt tree grilles. gt Dales Collection Tree Grilles are manufactured entirely in the UK from 100% recycled materials, and are themselves 100% recyclable. Made from engineering grade 250 cast iron they are expected to last up to 100 years in normal use - even with minimal or no maintenance and painting. This is because 250 grade cast iron is not only incredibly durable, it also does not rust in the traditional sense - in fact over a 100 year timescale, even if left unpainted, green-tech tree grilles will lose only a few microns to oxidisation.

gt Dales Collection Tree Grilles

The sand moulds used for casting are made from hand made patterns and the casting method is air set, also known as furan. This means that the sand for is mixed with furan resin which, after it has been compacted into the pattern box sets hard in the air creating a sand mould.

SUPPORT FRAMES gt Support Frames stabilise the grilles and helps to prevent shrinkage and subsidence of the tree pit. gt Security Clamps secure the individual sections of the tree grille to each other and to the support frame, which increases the rigidity of the whole unit and prevents removal of the grille sections.

The sand and resins used for Green-tech Cast Iron Tree Grilles are also recycled in an on site reclamation plant. Green-tech can offer a standard range of tree grilles as well as bespoke and one off products if required. gt Tree Grilles can be supplied with both irrigation and/or uplighter holes. Plantsava only needs to be topped up with water every few weeks and you can add fertilizer or plant food at the same time.

PLANTSAVA The Plantsava delivers water and oxygen directly to the plants roots where it is needed most. By installing a Plantsava tank at the base of your planter the plant can be easily watered but at a much reduced frequency. The Plantsava tank is easily installed at the base of the planter and then covered with soil ready for planting. The tank is filled through the filler pipe, a float in the filler pipe will tell you when the reservoir is full. The water then travels from the roots upwards for up to 6 weeks without the need for refilling. The system helps your plants establish a healthy root system, which means healthy looking plants.

Green-tech has supplied 2,750m of GRB PLUS to the recently constructed Newbottle Sports Pavilion in County Durham. Landscape contractors, Sustain Landscapes Ltd installed the GRB PLUS over a three week period to the main and overspill car parks as well as surrounding access areas.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT GRB PLUS is the latest development in ground reinforcement from Green-tech. The interlocking system is made from 100% recycled material diverted from landfill and is fully recyclable. Sustain Landscapes recommended GRB PLUS to the Client after consultation with Green-tech, the product was specifically chosen for its environmental attributes as well as excellent drainage properties , ease of installation and robust design.

The project, commissioned for September 2010, involved the laying of GRB PLUS on a 250mm sub-base overlaid with compacted rootzone. Each GRB PLUS component is 500mm x 500mm, making installation as efficient as possible. The squares were locked into place by Sustain Landscapes project team and installed with ease, GRB PLUS was cut to size in areas that presented awkward shapes or angles. On completion the cells were infilled with a 70/30 rootzone and overseeded.

RESULTS The project was completed in early October and already the GRB PLUS has integrated itself into the landscape. It is performing well with the on-set of the winter months.

gt Amenity Tree Soil combats the problems of poorly developed root structures under hard services such as pavements and car parking areas. gt Amenity Tree Soil has a naturally open structure allowing aeration to the root system.

APPLICATION GUIDE This product should only be used in situations where a compact soil structure is absolutely unavoidable. In order for the root zone to be successfully implemented, adequate drainage is a must. Due to the soil’s structure and high sand content it can act as a great water holding material soaking up much of the surrounding ground water. The soil should also be used in conjunction with an effective irrigation system for future watering and an effective root barrier to divert roots downward.

The Loksand Root Zone System from Green-Tech has revolutionised grass and soil stabilisation for landscape architects across the UK. Its advanced fibre technology provides a grass surface that is stable & freedraining, with excellent strength enabling it to be used for a variety of applications that are frequently trafficked. Whether you are specifying a grass covered car park, access road or public area the Loksand system will provide a fully grassed solution that will remain durable and resistant to wear no matter how often it is used. With over 17 years experience of product specification and installation the Green-Tech team will provide the right solution for your job.

Loose

The Loksand Rootzone system is a traditional sand and soil based substrate blended with polypropylene fibres. During the mixing process the crimped polypropylene fibres are entwined with the soil increasing the soil’s overall strength and resistance. The Loksand Rootzone system is applied above a Type 1 sub base layer then overlaid with turf to the specification of the project. As the turf becomes established the roots interlock with the Loksand Rootzone, further increasing stability and its cohesive strength. The benefits of using crimped fibre reinforced soil has been extensively tested, the results as a whole show the potential wide ranging applications of fibre reinforced soils and the extent to which a relatively small quantity of polypropylene fibres improves the soils strength.

WILD FLOWER MIXTURES WITH NATIVE SEED PROVENANCE Environmental pressures mean that wild flower planting now forms an important part of many landscape projects. The issue of native seed provenance is already vital in many parts of the UK and its importance is almost certain to grow. Green-tech is probably the largest independent supplier of wild flower seeds in the UK. Our standard mixture is 20% wild flowers to 80% low maintenance native grasses, but special mixes are available to exactly match the ecological requirements of any landscape. Our prices are highly competitive but remember: some seeds are scarce and thus more expensive. The precise mixture used can make significant differences to cost both upwards and downwards. Talk to us and we'll work with you to find the right mix at the best price possible.

Site Preparation The site should be weed free. Annual weeds should be controlled by mechanical means or by the use of contact based herbicide. Perennial weeds, for example docks thistle, nettles and couch grass can be dealt with using a translocated herbicide such as Round-Up. Cultivate to achieve a fine seed bed and then roll to ensure firmness. The best results are obtained when there is good contact between the soil and the seeds.

As a guide an application rate of 3/5g per m2 is recommended, for optimum flowering.
