There will be live demonstrations in-hall running throughout each day, with SIG Roofing & Roofline demonstrating LiveRoof, their exciting new modular roofing system and the use of hard metals, zinc and copper. Gradient Flat Roofing will be showing why a single layered tapered system is easier to install than a multi-layered system, while a range of other companies, including Sika, Icopal, Ejot, Xtratherm and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, will be keeping visitors entertained and informed with their demonstrations.
Comprehensive seminar programme Twenty-five seminars have been selected to run in the two in-hall seminar theatres, one of which is exclusively for continuing professional development (CDP) presentations. Subjects will include ‘The Code for Sustainable Homes & Airtightness’, a CPD presentation from Klober, and RIBA-approved presentations from ICB: ‘A Flexible Approach to Sustainable Roofing’ and Kemper System: ‘Sustainable Liquid Roofing – the cold facts’. A full list of seminars is available on the app and also in the interactive event planner on the show website www.ukroofingshow.co.uk.
Product training sessions IKO, Sika, SSQ, Icopal, SIG, and the Lead Sheet Association will be occupying the training zone to run training sessions, while manufacturers HD Sharman will be showing visitors how their cost-effective and BBA-approved system guttering system, Plygene Gutterline®, can easily and efficiently stop gutters leaking for good.
Free parking and breakfast! For those of you coming to the NEC by car or van, Marwood Events are paying for the parking of all pre-registered visitors. ROOF OVERVIEW
– Single Ply Roofing Association –
Food for thought – SPRA has
‘thanksgiving’ dinner at Roofex
T
aking its own inspiration from the roofing industry’s first national exhibition, the Single Ply Roofing Association, SPRA, is hosting a dinner for members and guests, themed as ‘Inspiring a roofing generation’. Unlike other trade bodies whose annual get-together may centre around a prize-giving, for SPRA this is more of a thanksgiving dinner. The association is using the event as a means to thank the membership for their support and, equally important, for backing the growth and change which the association is going through. James Talman, SPRA chief executive, said: “We want to project a highly professional event which is fun but has serious and informed discussion and debate. We will also have a number of non-members present, including potential members or stakeholders, plus the trade press, and it is essential that our message of an open progressive trade body is taken away. “We all know that the UK construction industry is in deep recession but, as in most things, how can one turn adversity into opportunity? Possibly the
single ply sector has not been as badly hit as some other roofing sectors and this reflects well on the competitive nature of the offer. However, there are still big challenges, with too many suppliers who see the UK as opportunistic, and contractors struggling with low margins and delayed payments.” Subjects to be covered in short, punchy presentations are: t Introductions, background and vision for SPRA (linked to inspiration), by James Talman t Market opportunities to inspire optimism and commercial drive, by Simon Storer, director of Construction Products Association t Roof design inspiration linked to sustainability and opportunity for single ply, by Gary Wilburn, director of HPW Architecture t Inspiration to succeed or overcome in this tough sector and business in general in today’s financial climate, by Mandy Hickson (former RAF Tornado pilot). SPRA anticipates that this heady mix of food for both thought and digestion will send guests away feeling that SPRA bucks the trend of a lot of trade bodies in that it is open, transparent, receptive, progressive (they are keen to report their first female roofing apprentice!) and inspiring growth and innovation.
Who and what is SPRA?

The Single Ply Roofing Association, on stand 102 at Roofex, has been running for more than 20 years and is an organisation of more than 70 companies who manufacture and supply or contract single ply roofing membranes and components. Single ply membranes are synthetic roofing materials (mainly flexible PVC in the UK) which have grown substantially in popularity over the last 30 years, due to their ease of installation, durability and more recently, environmental credentials. With the domestic sector’s drive for low or zero-carbon homes in new construction, eco home design lends itself well to the sector’s products, with roof types being typically flat, pitched, green/brown and recreational. The sector today has more than 40 (all but one, importers) suppliers of membranes, many component suppliers and at least 250 contractors. Of the 40 suppliers, ten are members of SPRA and account for more than
www.rooftraining.co.uk
75 per cent of the market, with a further maximum of ten who would meet entry requirements for quality. The contractor membership is currently substantially understated at approximately 35 and the association is keen to attract more contractors to join in the next year. SPRA is a valuable resource for architects, surveyors, building owners and contractors by providing ‘minimum standard’ guidance and assistance through its free helpline on the design, application, maintenance and disposal of single ply roofing systems and associated components. In addition, it audits its members to a minimum standard of competency in the application and the checking of finished projects. It is involved in setting regulations on roofing with BSI and similar bodies. It has recently set up a Specialist Apprenticeship Programme in the Midlands and East Anglia which it is looking to expand nationwide.

– Lead Sheet Association –
Five years on and still going strong – and that’s not only the tea!
I
n March it was five years since the Lead Sheet Association’s East Peckham training facility opened. It has been a successful five years, with the range of courses the LSA runs going from strength to strength and growing in popularity. The facility has come a long way in that time, with 800 individuals having attended training courses; 110,000 tonnes of lead have been used by the training centre (this would cover a roof area of 54,000m2 using code 4) and there have been 20,000 training days with approximately 60,000 cups of tea consumed!
Flexible training to suit your needs The LSA works with a number of satellite centres across the UK, but its main training centre, in Kent, offers exceptional facilities for both the practical and theory side of courses. Full-scale training rigs and resources ensure a well-equipped environment in which to learn, as well as allowing real-life situations to be recreated. The range of courses covers lead and hard metal work, from basic bossing and welding to more comprehensive courses such as the City and Guilds Leadworkers’ Certificate, the Special Apprenticeship Programme and Heritage Leadworker courses. The
centre is also a test centre for CSCS cards. LSA general manager Nigel Johnston is proud of what the association has achieved and how the staff responds to the needs of those who come through the training centre. He said: “One of the reasons we are successful is the attendance options and the variety and flexibility of our courses. “For example, when somebody makes an initial enquiry, we will work with them to find out what suits them best; is it just one day a week or is it one week now and then? We are open six days a week, so Saturdays are very popular, especially for selfemployed people. Our focus on flexibility means we can help people get on-the-job training or fit their needs around those of their employer.”
Technical support and consultancy As well as continuing with its successful training programme, the LSA also provides a technical support service to those using lead in construction and in the last five years it has handled about 20,000 enquiries and carried out 175 site surveys. With years of accumulated experience, the technical team offers independent advice covering all forms of installation over a wide range of

Keeping the material current and promoting the benefits of British Standard lead and its properties is at the heart of the LSA’s work. Lead itself has been used in construction in one form or another for centuries, thanks largely to its weathertightness and durability; but more recently the challenge for the LSA has been to keep the construction sector aware that this well-established material is as current and applicable in today’s market as it always has been. One of the things the LSA is focusing on is lead’s eco credentials, as sustainable targets become more important in the construction sector. Key to this has been lead’s inclusion in the BRE Green Guide with a rating of A+ or A, something which, the LSA feels, will be key for the material and the association moving forward.
Nigel explained: “If we want to keep lead current, and seen as a modern contemporary material, inclusion in the BRE Green Guide is going to play really strongly to that, because that is what people are looking for in today’s market.” You can see the LSA’s new film, ‘Lead – the eco story’ on its website to find out more about the green credentials of lead.
Visit the LSA at Roofex on Stand 740 to find out more about all our services and activities. We will be running CPDs and training demonstrations throughout the two days, so look out for those. If you aren’t at Roofex you can also find out more about the LSA’s training courses and technical consultancy services at www.leadsheet. co.uk, by e-mailing info@leadsheet.co.uk or calling 01622 872432.
This is your shop window – use it
R
oofex is your shop window – whether you’re standing outside, window shopping or looking for something in particular, or you’re on the inside, looking to sell your products or service. The exhibition organisers’ research indicates that more than 70 per cent of visitors to specialist shows are motivated pre-show to visit in order to keep up to speed with new products and developments in the industry, and about 50 per cent indicate that their purchasing decisions are influenced or changed by something they have seen at a specialist, niche event. So to take advantage of this and to get the most out of this experience, you need a plan and a clear idea of what you wish to achieve. If you are a standholder, which category do you fall in? Are you seeking to: t Increase market share with existing users t Introduce new products or services into existing markets
ROOF OVERVIEW
SPECIAL ROOFEX ISSUE 2013
t Promote new products or services into
new markets. No matter which one suits you, your plan for the event needs to cover:
Promotion: A significant part of your marketing includes promotion: pre-show, at-show, and post-show. Most exhibitors fail to have a plan that encompasses all three areas. Budget will play a major role in deciding what and how much promotional activity is possible. Theme: A theme that links to your
strategic marketing plan will help to guide promotional decisions. Know your target customer and consider modifying your promotional programmes for the different groups you want to attract. Depending on your available budget, you could include: direct mail, broadcast faxes, advertising, PR, sponsorship, and the internet as possible ways to reach your target audience.
Direct mail: This is still one of the most popular promotional vehicles for trade show exhibitors. Many of the www.rooftraining.co.uk
mailings come from show management lists and, as a result, everyone gets everything. Use the following to make the most of direct mail: t Use your own customer and prospect list to target the people you want to visit your stand, or follow up after the show t Design your mailshot to be benefitoriented and make an impact.
Give an incentive: Make sure
visitors have a reason to visit you. With a hall overflowing with fascinating products and services, combined with time constraints, people need an incentive to come and visit your stand. Their primary interest is in ‘what’s new’. They are eager to learn about the latest technologies, new applications, or anything that will help save them time and/or money. If you have something to shout about – and as you’ve booked a stand at Roofex, you must have – then shout it loud and clear.
And have a great show! 7

– Women in Construction –
Roofing’s first lady makes sure
she won’t be the last
Introducing a new, regular feature into our pages this month coincides perfectly with the celebration of roofing’s first exclusive exhibition for many a year. And who better to start this feature than its sponsor, Livia Williams, who is fast becoming one of the industry’s leading lights.
F
irst ladies are very much in the news. The passing of Margaret Thatcher has brought into sharp relief the fact that it takes a special type of woman to achieve prominence in what is still, chiefly, a man’s world. While the construction industry culture is nothing like as testosterone-rich as back in the early days of the Iron Lady’s climb to power, it is still a sector of industry where the female gender need to possess a certain grittiness to succeed. One woman – and she would be the first to stress that she is by no means the frontrunner – who has achieved a position of responsibility while earning the respect of colleagues, whatever their gender, is Livia Williams, co-owner of East Midlands Roofing College, governor of the Institute of Roofing, group training officer of Midland Roof Training Group, and former finance director of Midlands roofing business, J Wright Roofing. While being a finance director for almost 15 years is an indication of her skills acquired when studying for, first, a business administration degree at university in Iasi, in her native Romania, and then earning a masters degree in business administration (MBA), she is by no means the first woman to sit on a company board. What makes her stand out is that last year she became one of the first two women on the Institute of Roofing board of governors. Her first taste of the British way of life was acquired in her homeland, working ROOF OVERVIEW
for a UK holiday company; but it was her hunger for education which brought her to these shores, when she was accepted to study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Nottingham. It was this move that was to radically change her life, not least because she met Ian, later to become her husband. Her first job was as receptionist for J Wright Roofing. Very soon, she was working closely with the bookkeeper, had set up an admin system and helped brushup customer service and formalise health and safety.
‘
Women have a vital and increasingly essential part to play in the construction industry
’
Bringing on the next generation of roofers has long been one of Livia’s aims; she has mentored roof slating and tiling apprentices and provided them with information, advice and guidance, supported them with the appropriate training and encouraged those who had the potential to study for the next level – surveying or site management assessing. Despite the economic black clouds, Jason Wright saw, in 2008, the need for a dedicated roof training facility. Livia shared this dream and after a tough two years of not only keeping the regular business going and growing, but also
SPECIAL ROOFEX ISSUE 2013
www.rooftraining.co.uk
working to achieve this aim, they opened the East Midlands Roofing College, with the aim of supporting young people through apprenticeship training and feeding the roofing industry, which was a dying trade due to the lack of training. Her commitment to training has not gone unnoticed. Three years ago she was approached by Midland Roof Training Group and ConstructionSkills (now CITB) to be their group training officer, thus supporting more than 150 Midlands roofing companies with specialist and management training. Then last year came another accolade for this training dynamo, when she was voted on to the board of governors of the Institute of Roofing, a position she accepted with alacrity and has already proved her worth, not least in promoting the message that women have a vital and increasingly essential part to play in the construction industry. If the cliché is correct and men can only do one thing at a time, it must call for a woman to combine finance director, apprentice mentor, group trainer and mother-of-two! And Livia has no intentions of stopping here. Her new aim is to make sure the construction industry in general, and roofing in particular, recognises the importance and value of women in all roles, be that roofer, manager or managing director. One way she plans to spread this message is through Roof Overview. As they say, watch this space. 9

– Dörken DELTA® Pitched Roof and Façade Membranes –
What a difference a year makes
R
oofex visitors will be impressed by the range of Dörken DELTA® membranes on its stand (number 660). Fresh from Ecobuild, where newcomer to the UK market, Dörken GmbH & Co KG, tested the British reaction to its high specification membranes, UK business development manager Colin Williamson (pictured below left) is confident that these products will be enthusiastically welcomed. “Our exhibition products include our established and proven pitched roof and façade membranes, and our new REFLEX reflective vapour barrier,” he said. “Specifiers in particular will appreciate the high specification and performance characteristics of Europe’s leading designer and manufacturer of innovative building membranes.”
SIG and Dörken join forces It is now 12 months since the German subsidiary of Ewald Dörken AG, Dörken GmbH & Co KG, decided to enter the UK pitched roof and façade sector. A household name throughout Europe for its high quality, breathable pitched roof and façade membranes, Dörken felt that the time was right to capitalise on the renewed interest in the UK building sector for highly specialised, quality-driven breathable membranes in roofs and façades. Colin Williamson was appointed the UK
business development manager in April 2012 to develop a strong market presence via a network of specialist roofing and construction outlets throughout the UK, and he hasn’t let the grass grow under his feet. A new UK company is now fully operational. Two transport hubs in the South and the Midlands serve the whole of the UK market, while Jim Dickson (pictured right) is the UK northern regional manager, meaning that Dörken can effectively cover the entire UK. The UK’s largest builders merchants, SIG, has awarded Dörken a Preferential Supplier Status (PSS) for its Roofing Merchants Division. Colin and his team will be visiting all 350 SIG outlets to build on the excellent relationship already established with SIG’s headquarters in St Ives, under the management of David Farrant and his team. And together with SIG, Dörken will be launching various important national marketing initiatives in the roofing sector. All in all, a good 12 months’ work!
Dörken does it differently: products are designed specifically to cope with extreme weather conditions in individual regions throughout the UK

DELTA®-EXXTREM
With its partnership with SIG now firmly sealed, and having quickly established a foothold in the Scottish market, Dörken has decided to set up an operation north of the border near Kirkcaldy, which will stock specialist products. This will facilitate the need to offer ‘just-in time’ delivery to the specialised form of timber-frame housebuilding that is prevalent in Scotland. Jim Dickson, northern regional manager, will oversee all commercial and technical sales activities in this area. The picture for the rest of the UK is equally as positive, with two large storage facilities in North Weald in Essex, and Wolverhampton in the Midlands. Colin said: “Eventually we hope to have specialist teams throughout the UK offering products that are designed specifically for individual regions – extreme weather conditions in coastal regions, mountainous areas, lowlands, and the warmer but wetter climes in the southern and westerly parts of the UK.” He added that this emphasis on innovative design and manufacture has been the core of Dörken’s success in Germany, which now accounts for over 60 per cent of the market for breathable membranes in the construction sector.
Buildings to impress…. Dörken doesn’t do things by halves… so unsurprisingly, its UK launch began at the 2012 London Olympics. The breathtaking Aquatics Centre, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, boasts a made-to-measure, breathable DELTA®-EXXTREM membrane, complete with a 25-year guarantee. The venue’s roof proved to be one of the most complex engineering challenges of the Olympic Park big build. Spectacularly wave-like, it measures 160m long and up to 80m wide, giving it a longer single span than Heathrow Terminal 5. However, the Aquatics Centre wasn’t Dorken’s first UK project; some ten years ago one of its DELTA® membranes was incorporated into the Stansted Airport extension (pictured below). And football fans will be interested to know that these membranes were used in the construction of the magnificent Bayern Munich Football Stadium in Germany, the home of Dörken.

– Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association –
LRWA - a resource for
specifiers and contractors
T
he Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association is proud to announce its support of Roofex in its inaugural year. The main aim of the show for the association is to raise awareness of the resources that the LRWA can offer both specifiers and contractors to assist them in the use of liquid applied membranes.
Resources available for the specifier The LRWA is the collective voice for the liquid waterproofing industry, giving guidance towards industry standards and best practice. As such, there is a wealth of information available to offer guidance and support for specifiers on our website www.lrwa.org.uk, including: t Code of Practice for the specification and use of liquid applied waterproofing systems for roofs, balconies and walkways t Guidance notes designed to educate and inform as to the properties, correct applications, installation methods and aftercare of liquid waterproofing systems t Technical drawings of common details using liquids t Information on generic Ecopoint ratings for ‘Cold Applied Liquids for Roof Constructions’ that can contribute to a building’s BREEAM rating. The LRWA also developed a RIBA-approved online continuing professional development (CPD) seminar – available at www.ribacpd.com – called ‘Introduction to the Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Association: A Resource for Specifiers’ (pictured below). The CPD takes

about 25 minutes to complete and includes information on the history of liquids and the various ways in which the LRWA aims to promote best practice within the industry, and the range of resources available to aid in specifying liquid waterproofing solutions. As part of our support for the show, the LRWA’s technical secretary, Terry Wain, will be conducting the CPD seminar on Thursday, May 2, at 2pm. Entry is free for any visitors to the show, so please feel free to come along.
Resources available for the contractor The LRWA is committed to developing skills in the roofing industry to ensure quality liquid applicators are available throughout the UK and, as such, has worked on some key initiatives to progress training for the industry. One such initiative is the Specialist Apprenticeship Programme (SAP) for liquid waterproofing; this two-year fully grant-aided course, was developed with CITB (formerly ConstructionSkills) for applicators of any age. The course covers all aspects of roofing, but with a particular emphasis on liquid applications and the technical and practical aspects of using the differing chemistries within the liquid roofing industry, which include: t Polyurethanes t PMMAs t Polyesters and two-pack polyurethanes t Glass reinforced plastics t Hot applied polymer modified bitumen (hot melts). The LRWA also worked with Briggs Amasco and CITB to set up a training centre based at Cradley Heath (near Birmingham) that has the inbuilt facilities to accommodate the training of liquid application. Come and see us on Stand 772 to learn more about the LRWA, our aims and objectives and meet some of our key staff and members. www.rooftraining.co.uk

ainsbury’s distribution centre at Warrington was extended and doubled in size six years ago. The gutters on the new extension had been leaking for some time. Distribution Hygiene Services, specialists in industrial internal and external deep-cleaning services for distribution warehouses in ambient, chilled and freezer chambers, were asked to clean and inspect the gutters at Warrington and during this clean found that the gutters were also in a very poor state of repair. Distribution Hygiene Services were asked to find a solution to the gutter problems and Ampteam were contacted to enquire about the Unifold Gutter Lining System. Following an initial meeting between Ampteam and Distribution Hygiene Services, where Unifold was introduced, a further meeting was convened on site at Warrington when the existing gutters were inspected and surveyed by Ampteam. Unifold materials to line the four gutter
runs totalling 1,040 metres were installed by DHS following installation training at Ampteam headquarters. The gutter runs also included siphonic drainage and overflow systems and building expansion joints. These were provided with factoryfabricated units specifically designed to function without impairment to the original system. The project was completed by Ampteam and Distribution Hygiene Services to the satisfaction of Sainsbury’s, on time and within budget. Visit us on Stand 624 at Roofex.

elwyn Tool Group will be launching the latest in the range of Leister automatic roofing machines on Stand 268 at Roofex. The latest model in the range of Leister single ply membrane roof welding machines, the Leister UNIROOF 240v ensures a consistent 40mm overlap weld, particularly for smaller installation areas or in areas that are confined but still need to meet the technical requirements of 40mm. Based on the design of the already wellestablished 110v Uniplan Roof, which is still current, the UNIROOF provides more power and therefore welds more metres per minute when welding plastic membrane. The Leister UNIROOF uses the same operating controls as the Varimat V, making it straightforward to use for materials such as PVC, TPO, ECB and
EPDM. Weighing just 12.8kgs, including the cable, the Leister UNIROOF is a lightweight and easyto-manage partner on the roof that will ensure a consistent and reliable weld at lengths of up to five meters per minute. For an on-site demonstration of the UNIROOF, contact Welwyn Tool Group, the authorised UK importer and distributor for Leister equipment, on 01707 331111 or e-mail info@welwyntoolgroup.co.uk.

tand 102 is the place to be at Roofex, says the Institute of Roofing, one of the notable organisations taking part in this groundbreaking event. And their presence is not only to show possible new members why they should join; they want to hear the opinions of existing members of how the Institute should develop. The IoR’s chairman of regions Gary Lane, who is spearheading the IoR’s presence, said: “We are hoping to meet up with our sponsors and other industry professionals over the two-day event at the IoR stand. “This is a real opportunity for new and existing members to come and visit us and tell us what they expect from us to develop and offer a relevant and current service.

“We can only do this with your help, so we will be at Roofex to listen to you and put your suggestions into practice.” The IoR currently offers members: t Career development for everyone t Recognised examinations and qualifications t Continuing professional development (CPD) training courses t Seminars t Lectures and work visits t Regional meetings t Information and advice.
Midlands’ top roofing companies, Lane Roofing, says that there is no big secret behind its success. According to him, investing in the company’s people through training, and passing on the experienced gained over the years brings many benefits to the business and its clients alike. Continuing professional development is paramount to Lane Roofing, both at management and operative level. “We keep up-to-date on health and safety issues, methods of works, plant operations and roofing systems, through training delivered by organisations such as the Institute of Roofing and the Midland Roof Training Group (MRTG),” Gary explained. “Our commitment to training has enabled us to take on apprentices year after year, including my son, Jordan, who took first place in the builtup roofing category at last year’s SkillBuild finals after training at the National Construction College Midlands.” (See picture below). He is keen that companies like himself find out about the benefits these organisations can offer, so he is sponsoring the IoR stand and bringing his staff along to help out on both this and the Roofing Industry Alliance stand, which promotes the work of the regional roof training groups. Please log on at http://www.ukroofingshow. co.uk/ to get your free entry ticket and find out more about the show. Kemper System showcases sustainability at Roofex
K
emper System will be among the first specialist companies to take advantage of the UK’s first dedicated roofing show when the company exhibits at Stand 260, Hall 8. Kemper System will use this forum to showcase its innovative roofing products, including its Kemperol 2K-PUR solventfree liquid waterproofing system and its Stratex Warm Roof System. Kemper System’s innovative Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free system was the first solvent-free wet-on-wet cold liquid waterproofing system available on the UK market and remains the only product of its kind. The fume-free system is not only ideal for sustainable new builds, but is also perfect for upgrades to occupied buildings, as it lacks any nuisance odours, so work can be carried out while the building remains in normal use.
20-year warranty

Hard-wearing and durable, Kemperol 2K-PUR bonds to almost any substrate to create a totally seamless, monolithic, U/V stable, elastomeric membrane that cannot delaminate. Based on an 80 per cent castor-oil formulation derived from sustainable sources, the liquid system also incorporates a flexible non-woven reinforcement fleece, which is manufactured using a 25 per cent recycled plastic bottle content. Like Kemper System’s solvent-based Kemperol V210 system, Kemperol 2K-PUR is offered with a 20-year warranty and is suitable for application on top of most existing roofing materials. Complementing the sustainability credentials of the Kemperol 2K-PUR system, Kemper System’s Stratex Warm Roof System incorporates primers, vapour barrier, insulation and waterproofing with a range of optional surfacing. Featuring a rigid PIR insulation board with a unique tongue and groove interlocking joint, the system significantly reduces cold bridging and gives a smooth surface finish. Kemper System will also be
showcasing the company’s Kempergro Green Roof System. This is a three-section system comprising a reservoir attenuation composite, growing medium and vegetation. The reservoir attenuation layer includes an upper filter fleece, central reservoir core and lower protection fleece, which are manufactured from 90 per cent recycled materials, and is factory-bonded to maximise performance and simplify installation. Suitable for use with the Kemperol 2K-PUR or Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane systems, Kempergro has a growing medium that is 100 per cent composed of recycled brick, tiles and green compost, which is processed and graded to support an extensive range of sedum, meadow or lawn roof media.
High profile projects Visitors to Kemper System’s stand will be able to see how each of the systems have been used in practice, including how the Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing membrane and Stratex Warm Roof System have been used together on various high profile projects. There will also be a number of display areas where visitors can view samples of the cured product to experience first-hand the flexibility and durability it offers. Kemper System managing director Harry Cowell said: “We are delighted that there is now a specialist exhibition that focuses on the roofing sector and is supported and endorsed by all the major roofing associations. “This is not only an opportunity for contractors and specifiers to find out about the latest products and technologies, it’s also a forum for sharing best practice and learning from CPD presentations and we’re excited to be part of the very first event.”

– Sika-Trocal –
40 years and still waterproofing UK roofs
F
ollowing hot on the heels of its biennial contractor conference at The Belfry, SikaTrocal is making the Midlands hum once more, this time by exhibiting at the first Roofex show. “Having just celebrated 40 years in the UK, and hosted a very successful contractor conference, there’s a lot going on for Sika-Trocal right now,” said Pete Hollingworth, national sales manager. “These are exciting times as we continue to grow our share of the single ply roofing market, so why not come to see us at the NEC to find out what we have to offer.” Sika-Trocal can be found on Stand 510 where visitors can learn more about the full range of single ply roofing systems – which now includes a recently launched new green roof system. Peter added: “Our green roof systems have long been used on significant projects around the UK, including two new Dog’s Trust centres. “This new product gives specifiers an additional element of choice.” Sika-Trocal has worked closely on developing its green roof system with a selection of experts, who have now become Sika green roof contractors.
These contractors are experienced in designing and installing green roof systems, allowing specifiers to benefit from a professional green roof installation and giving the company an immediate presence in this comparatively new market.
Wealth of expertise Moving into new areas has not distracted the company from its more established markets. As one of the first single ply roofing brands in the UK, and a leading player in the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA), Sika-Trocal has a wealth of expertise, which visitors can be benefit from during the show, as the technical team is on hand to answer any questions regarding the specification and installation of Sika-Trocal’s single ply roofing systems. It’s all go for Sika-Trocal at the moment. In addition to the contractor conference and preparing for Roofex, it also played a part in the National Federation of Roofing Contractors’ annual meeting at Kempton Park racecourse, where it sponsored a race. Roofex goes international
I
f you’ve had a chance to look at the list of exhibitors, you’ll realise that there’s a distinctly foreign feel to some of the names. Perhaps Eire doesn’t completely qualify as ‘abroad’, but there are enough French, German, Dutch and even USA exhibitors to bring an international flavour to this year’s Roofex. New to Roof Overview magazine are two exhibitors who are appearing in this issue. Flexim Roof Putty (page 23) has very strong Dutch links, as this lightweight, ready-to-use product (pictured) has been developed in Holland to withstand all types of weather conditions and extreme temperatures. This award-winning brand is widely used in the international building trade – indeed, it has already been used successfully on four million roofs worldwide – but until this year it wasn’t easily available in the UK. It is now available to British roofers as a robust and flexible alternative to conventional mortar. “Builders and roofers working across Europe and in other parts of the world 20
are accustomed to the benefits of Flexim, which is instantly waterproof, permanently flexible and stormproof,” says Marco Polstra of Flexim UK, which has its headquarters in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Also exhibiting at Roofex is the CCM Europe Group (page 22), specialists for the long-life waterproofing of roofs, structures and cladding systems of every kind, with its head office located in Hamburg and branches in the UK and Holland. As part of the global diversified company CARLISLE Companies Inc., the CARLISLE Construction Materials Europe Group (CARLISLE CM Europe) is particularly focused on the European market with its brand RESITRIX®. where the company claims that RESITRIX® is the only waterproofing membrane guaranteeing safe, simple and rapid installation, while at the same time being sealed for a lifetime (certified 50 years’ life expectancy). – Preforma Ltd –
Great balls of technology shake up railing industry
N
orth East manufacturer Preforma is not the kind of company to sit around and moan about the recession. As the construction sector suffered, they looked at what the market needed – and went for it! Preforma Limited is now the designer and manufacturer of Formarail® – a new and innovative modular industrial railing system which has really shaken up this niche sector of industry. Preforma has engineered a new, cost-effective way to install railings, rapidly speeding up the fitting process. Working in the construction sector and witnessing first-hand the decline in new building projects and budget cuts, Preforma foundermembers identified an opportunity for a new product which would save on the key resources of time and money, while improving the aesthetic value and simplicity of modular handrailing.
‘
This new concept is a testament to the ingenuity of British manufacturing
’
It took the Preforma engineering team more than two years in research, development and testing to perfect its new range of railings, but by the end of 2011, Formarail® was ready to go. Formarail® is a unique railing system which makes use of rotating ball technology. The rotating ball allows the handrail to be positioned at varying gradients up to 45 degrees, eliminating the need to measure angles before and during fitting. The ball is self-aligning and therefore makes fitting simple, efficient and quick. This simple principle could signify a massive shift in how railings are installed, bringing an end to the reign of clamping systems which have dominated the market for many years. This new concept of a rotating ball within the railing post is a testament to the ingenuity of British manufacturing and patent applications are pending in more than 20 countries.
ROOF OVERVIEW
SPECIAL ROOFEX ISSUE 2013
Preforma places a significant amount of resource into the continual development of its product range and perfecting the right product for the right job. The Preforma ingenuity has also been applied to fall protection and at this year’s Roofex, Preforma will be showcasing its Roof Edge Protection product line. Formarail® Roof Edge Protection is a counterbalance system that offers a handsfree protective solution for the safety of workers and prevents falls from height. This new and innovative fall protection railing system is quick and easy to install and its crafted, patented design means it not only looks great, but it is versatile and is the ideal safety railing for any roofing project. Each Formarail® post is made from the highest quality marine grade LM25 aluminium, which means it is both lightweight and durable. It is the perfect material for installing on a roof, as it can be raised to roof level with ease and will withstand extreme weather conditions. Formarail® Roof Edge Protection: t Provides collective protection for all working on a roof t Works on a proven counterbalance system t Does not penetrate the roof membrane t Requires minimum components for ease of installation t Is suitable for use on concrete, asphalt, PVC membrane and felt roof surfaces. Preforma managing director Ed Docherty said: “The principle of Formarail® and its rotating ball is simple, but brilliant. It is up to 50 per cent quicker to install than other modular railing systems, offering sizable cost savings. In the past 12 months we have secured distribution contracts with some of the UK’s leading quality building and construction product providers and we aim to further expand our market share in the coming year. “To complement this quality product, Preforma ensures the level of customer service it provides is first class and offers a bespoke design and installation service to ensure customers maximise the benefits of Formarail®’s unique characteristics.” Customers, too, approve of the Preforma service. Simon Rood, managing director of Roodsafe Limited, said: “Preforma is always efficient and offers a prompt service. The quality of products is excellent and our customers are impressed with the speed of fitting.” Formarail® is also available through a network of building product suppliers throughout the UK and Ireland. A full list of stockists can be found on the Preforma website at www.preforma.co.uk.
