Becoming a Professional Makeup Artist Hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and a talented makeup artist can transform a person into someone or something completely different. As with any profession taking up a makeup training course requires a lot of practicing and study to be able to master your chosen craft. At Cameron Jane we believe there are 5 steps to becoming a professional makeup artist.
1. Learn – education is the key – you need to enrol in a makeup training course, a professional makeup artist needs to be skilled and this requires learning your craft – having the best make up tools is just the beginning. You need to be passionate, the makeup industry is competitive, studying and then working in this field will take up a lot of your time and energy. You will also need to decide on joining a makeup academy – Cameron Jane provides students with a range of courses from Retail Make-up and skin care to freelance bridal make-up courses and TV and film makeup 2. Your kit – All make-up artists have their own kit which will include all the tools they need – for the services they offer – your kit could include – foundation, concealers, blushes, eyeshadows, mascara, eyeliners, lipsticks, lip gloss, false eyelashes, moisturiser, tweezers, professional brush set – just to name a few
3. Skills – Becoming a make-up artist takes time and a LOT of practice – offer to do free make up for those who volunteer to let you practice on them. Offer to apprentice for other make-up artists, this will allow you to pick up techniques, tips and tricks all while continuing with your Sydney makeup school course 4. Your niche – while studying your chosen professional make up classes at Cameron Jane you will discover your strengths and weaknesses and where your career is headed. There are a range of career choices you need to find the one that is right for you – some fields include – Freelance makeup for weddings, photography, print, television, film, the theatre, cosmetic counter, fashion and even makeovers or make up lessons. 5. Market yourself – with your makeup academy course at Cameron Jane completed – you have decided where you want your career to head it’s time to get out there. Have your portfolio, business cards and resume up to date and ready to go. If you haven’t already get business cards made up with your name, logo and details and hand them out to everyone you meet. If you decide to specialise in bridal makeup, drop your cards with the local wedding dress boutiques. On your resume list the makeup training courses you have completed and in your portfolio keep before and after photo so people can see your skills as a make-up artist.
