Historic District Case Studies

VILLAGES CATALYST PROJECT

Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins; adapted from an original template created by a previous employee Objective: Analyze various neighborhoods/districts throughout North America that contain at least one historic home that has been adapted for commercial use. This process will help contextualize an historic home within an urban environment and illustrate the best uses for such a condition. Execution: An original template, designed by a previous employee, was created to show an elevation of the district, a land-use map, and images. This template required aesthetic/graphic refinement as well as the inclusion of the actual graphics/information for each of the historic districts that were selected. The design required the use of Adobe InDesign for the template itself as well as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Google Earth for the various graphic elements and images. Conclusion: This assignment required skills in adaptability and flexibility since it was begun by another designer. Critical thinking and planning skills were crucial in determining which aspects of the design needed to be changed and made better and which portions should be kept in order to keep the project moving forward. Technical computer skills were also integral to the completion of this task and many new technical skills were learned in the process.

Jefferson Historic Homes

VILLAGES CATALYST PROJECT

Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins Objective: Pinpoint the historic homes located on East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan to understand their current site contexts and provide future recommendations for use and development Execution: This research and graphic assignment involved pin-pointing the locations of listed historic homes along East Jefferson Avenue, photographing them within the context of their respective blocks, and creating graphics to visually define their urban conditions. This involved the use of Microsoft Excel for the inital data, use of a digital camera to photograph the blocks, Photoshop to collage the photos into elevations, and InDesign to create the final graphics. Conclusion: This assignment involved acquiring and integrating some base information on the historic homes on East Jefferson Avenue and using that as a starting point for further research and on-site data collection. Accuracy was essential to this project with the data provided and the photographs taken as this work would become a tool to help understand the urban context that was the foundation for the entire project. As graphic design was inherent to the end result, computer/technical skills were also implemented. As with all projects, the independence/initiative to keep the project moving forward was directly related to the communication necessary with the project leaders.

Urban Context Map

VILLAGES CATALYST PROJECT

Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins; adapted from an original template created by a previous employee Objective: Create a graphic map that displays the urban context of the project block on East Jefferson Avenue and Seminole which incorporates the proposed adaptations to the site and the buildings within it. Execution: Working off of an existing urban context map, designed by a previous employee, the goal was to refine and further develop the graphics and content. Adobe Illustrator was used to create all of the graphic elements. Conclusion: This assignment involved planning and critical thinking skills as well as flexibility to utilize the existing content that would be used to create the final urban context map. This also involved realistic expectations and time management to determine the efficiency of either saving existing content or creating completely new content for specific scenarios. Computer/technical skills were also inherent to the developemt of this assignment as it was accomplished exclusively in Illustrator.

VILLAGES CATALYST PROJECT

Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins; adapted from an original template created by a previous employee Objective: Create a graphic template for the various project block scenarios that will incorporate financial pro forma information as is necessary. Execution: This graphic assignment involved adapting an original template, created by a previous employee, and refining it visually and aesthetically so that it could be used as a template for pro forma data sets that related to programmatic scenarios for the project block. Adobe Illustrator was used to creat all of the graphic elements. Conclusion: Acquiring and integrating information was essential to this assignment as it was begun using a previously created document. Flexibility and accuracy were crucial for discerning how best to adapt the given information into a simple yet appealing graphic template. In this way, communication with project leaders was always a key component in determining how to approach the assignment. As it was graphic in nature, computer/technical skills were integral to the timely completion of the task.

Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins Objective: Create a vibrant rendering of the project block which includes all of the planned or proposed adaptations/ additions to the area which will act as urban activation. Execution: This assignment, as the culmination of the Villages Catalyst Project, was meant to act as a capstone and visual presentation tool for the entire project. Photoshop was used extensively to collage photographs that were taken of the project block and to add the block activation that was necessary to show the complete vision of the project. Conclusion: As one of the largest, most in-depth projects, time management was extremely important in order to finish the assignment in a timely manner. Problem solving was also crucial as any design work will invetiably involve previously unforeseen obstacles. Computer/technical skills were inherent to the completion of this assignment as it was created entirely in Photoshop.

Villages Visitors Map Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins Objective: Create a visitors wayfinding map for The Villages neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan including historic homes, green spaces, and other points of interest with the potential for it to be used for the Detroit Design Festival.

Execution: This research and graphic assignment involved a through understanding of The Villages neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. It was necessary to establish nodes for the wayfinding, pedestrian route that visitors could take as well as the important businesses and green spaces that are located in the area. All of this was done with the assistance of the project director and manager but all of graphic work was done by the designer in Adobe Illustrator. Conclusion: This assignment involved acquiring and integrating a plethora of information on The Villages neighborhood. Organization and planning were essential to making sense of all of this information to make it graphically understandable and aesthetically pleasing. Listening and communication skills were also vital to this process since, as with all design projects, it was a collaborative effort between the project leaders and the designer. Computer/techical skills were implemented throughout the creation of the map.

Owen Park Mural Wall Project Director: Virginia Stanard Project Manager: Ceara O’leary Design: Chris Perkins Objective: Design a wall that can be made exclusively out of pallets that could be used to display a mural or other artwork located in Owen Park in Detroit, Michigan that could be easily seen from East Jefferson Avenue. Execution: This design assignment required an understanding of the urban condition of Owen Park and its relationship to East Jefferson Avenue. Proposed as a part of the Detroit Design Festival, the mural wall was to be made out of wooden pallets. Therefore, knowledge of the materials and possible construction process was needed. The schematic drawings for this assignment were done in AutoCAD and the renderings were done in Adobe Photoshop. Conclusion: This assignment required consistent time management as there was limited time to design and complete the project. Realistic expectations and flexibilty were utilized simultaneously with accuracy to ensure that the design could be completed as efficiently and effectively as possible. Mastery of computer skills was a large portion of completeing this assignment in a timely manner while independence/initiative kept the project on track throughout.
