Quentin Saxby Blake was born in Sidcup, Kent, England. Attended a local primary school and Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School. First drawings were accepted by Punch. National Service in the Royal Army Educational Corps. Read English Literature at Downing College, Cambridge as a student of F R Leavis. Awarded Postgraduate Certificate in Education by the Institute of Education of London University. Studied as a part-time student at Chelsea College of Art & Design, under the guidance of Brian Robb. Became an illustrator and cover artist for Punch and The Spectator, and produced book jackets for Penguin Books. Published his first illustrated children’s book: John Yeoman’s A Drink of Water (Faber & Faber). Appointed part-time tutor in the Illustration Department of the Royal College of Art. Patrick (Jonathan Cape), the first book of which he was author and illustrator. Four exhibitions at Mel Calman’s Workshop Gallery: ‘Invitation to the Dance’, ‘Runners and Riders’, ‘Creature Comforts’ and ‘Water Music’. Publication of Michael Rosen’s Mind Your Own Business (Andre Deutsch); and of Russell Hoban’s How Tom Beat Captain Najork and his Hired Sportsmen (Jonathan Cape). First collaboration with Roald Dahl, on The Enormous Crocodile (Jonathan Cape). Appointed Head of the Illustration Department of the Royal College of Art. Awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for Mister Magnolia (Jonathan Cape). Awarded the Red House Children’s Book Award for Mister Magnolia.

It is launched at a retrospective exhibition mounted by the Chris Beetles Gallery. 2001 Curated and contributed illustrations to the exhibition, ‘Tell Me a Picture’, at the National Gallery, London. Curated ‘A Baker’s Dozen: Thirteen contemporary children’s book illustrators’, for Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery. Produced the children’s book, Un Bateau dans le Ciel, in collaboration with 1800 Frenchspeaking children in six countries. It was published subsequently in 1982

Received the Hans Christian Andersen Award. 2002-05 Curated ‘Magic Pencil: Exhibition of present-day British children’s book illustrators’ for the British Council. It toured to Newcastle and London, and then internationally. A facsimile version of the exhibition toured to over one hundred venues in more than thirty countries. 2003-04 The retrospective exhibition ‘Quentin Blake: Fifty Years of Illustration’, was held at The Gilbert Collection, Somerset House, London; Aberdeen Art Gallery, Aberdeen; and Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston. 2004-05 The exhibition ‘Quentin Blake at Christmas: Four aspects of his work’ was mounted by Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. In conjunction with the show, Chris Beetles Gallery held ‘Quentin Blake For Sale at the Dulwich Picture Gallery’ in November and December of 2004. 2004 Appointed Patron of the Prince of Wales charity Arts & Kids. The exhibition ‘Quentin Blake at Nunnington Hall’, was mounted as a collaboration between the Chris Beetles Gallery and the National Trust property in the Yorkshire Dales. Publication of Michael Rosen’s Sad Book (Walker Books). 2005 The travelling exhibition ‘In All Directions: Illustration and Transport’, with its accompanying book, was organised by the Arts Council. Appointed CBE. Curated and contributed illustrations

to the exhibition, ‘Quentin Blake et les Demoiselles des Bords de Seine’, for the reopening of the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris. The exhibition ‘Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake: The Illustrations’ was mounted at the Royal National Theatre. ‘Quentin Blake: Life of Birds & Children and other Beasts!!!’ was mounted by the Chris Beetles Gallery. 2006 The exhibition ‘The Theater of the Page’ was mounted by the Eric Carle Museum, Amherst, USA. The exhibition ‘Quentin Blake and Emanuele Luzzati: Theatres of the Imagination’, was mounted at the Italian Cultural Institute, London. Curated ‘Frabjous Beasts: Strange creatures in the work of ten contemporary artists’, mounted by the Holburne Museum, Bath. Introduced and illustrated a new edition of Rights of the Reader by Daniel Pennac, translated from French to English by Sarah Adams, and published by Walker Books. 2006-07 Produced mural illustrations for South Kensington and Chelsea Mental Healthcare Centre; St Charles Hospital, Ladbroke Grove; Alexandra Avenue Health and Social Care Centre, Harrow; and Beatrice Place, Kensington. 2007 Appointed patron of The Nightingale Project. The exhibition ‘Quentin Blake: A Celebration!’ was mounted by the Chris Beetles Gallery. Vive Nos Vieux Jours! was published by Gallimard. It was published subsequently in English by the Andersen Press in 2008. Appointed Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France). 2007-08 The exhibition ‘Snozzcumbers and Frobscottle: The Roald Dahl Illustrations’ was opened at Seven Stories Centre for Children’s Books, Newcastle.
