“Design a smartphone app that enhances the experience of Smart City Living

Persona

“I want to keep fit, but can’t find time for the gym” Meet Joseph, 31. Joseph is a business analyst who works in central Birmingham, but lives in Erdington, a near-by commuter town. Joseph takes the train in everyday, which takes 15 minutes, plus a 15 minute walk to the office. Joseph has found his health and fitness have deteriorated with long office hours and no time for exercise.

He would like to go to the gym, but can’t find the time to justify the cost. Enter UrbanFit. From UrbanFit, Joseph wants to: Fit exercise around work without adverse effects Find fun alternative routes to work Experience more of city life Gain a sense of fulfilment from exercise

Wireframes I began the process wireframing with pen and paper, trying to get ideas down quickly and easily before beginning to worry about colours, alignment and other distractions. This allowed me to get a number of ideas down and begin asking potential users what their thoughts and opinions on my designs were. I could then test these ideas with users before committing to a design and going through the whole visual design process. This way issues could be raised easily and fixed easily. I used Marvel’s ‘Prototyping on Paper’ app to test my wireframes with my user, which allowed me to create simple interactions with my sketches by putting invisible “buttons” on top of my sketches on the phone, giving my user a realistic sense of how the app worked.

Final Design The final design features the user onboarding process, one of the most important journeys on the app. User data and goals are all collected so the app can create a fitness program suitable for the user’s goals. As part of the UX module I also produced a working Axure RP prototype, creating a fully interactive prototype.

“Identify an opportunity for an IoT product for which the industrial design and app interface are dedicated to a clearly defined context

Ideation

Ideation consisted of exploring different forms and shapes before coming to my initial idea above. The idea changed over the course of the modelling stage, adding a chute for pills and a screen on the front.

App Design The screens below show the branding, UI and key screens of the app. These are; inputting new medication, your pill schedule and reminder options for yourself and family.

Living with CAH

“Select a website that’s important to me and design an improved UX/UI for it”

User Research

I sent out a questionnaire to everyone on the CAH Support Group subscription list, meaning it reached around 200 people. The questions ranged from demographics, through amount of usage to their thoughts and opinions of the website. This meant I was not only able to find out what they used, how much and why they didn’t use other parts. From here, I could make sure the website was targetted to the users’ needs, focussing the site much better. I also found which features users disliked an needed more change, making prioritisation much easier.

Most users were referred by the Support Group Site used regularly at first, now only occasionally New, Forums and Contact are the most used

Insights

“It’s too hard to find specific things” Just 30% of users were able to find what they were looking for. This is what drives traffic away from the site.

“The website is not responsive” In the UK, 33% of internet users use their smartphone the most. This restricts the site’s accessibility.

“The site isn’t updated enough” Improving the intuity and usability of the site will lead to more traffic and thus more need to keep it updated.

Both web design and mobile UI design are incorporated throughout the challenge, giving well-rounded practise.

Daily UI has helped me begin teaching myself Adobe XD. I have been working on the basics at the beginning, and hope that throughout the 100 days I will be able to progress and begin learning more about XD, such as the prototyping and animation side of the program.
