January in the Garden

Whilst usually the coldest month in the year, surprisingly enough January is a great time to be in the garden. It is a time to really appreciate plants that do flower, that have great bark or interesting foliage. It is a good time to spot those holes that need filling for the coming seasons. The new seed catalogues are out for the spring, January is a best time to sit down with a cup of tea and decide what you want to grow next year. Order it as soon as possible before their seed banks are depleted. Start planning what summer bulbs you would like. Towards the end of this month you can start sowing some early crops but they will have to have a heated greenhouse or propagator. Sow the seeds of berrying trees and shrubs, but they will need a period of cold to break their dormancy. Sow small quantities of lettuce, summer cabbages and cauliflowers, radishes, carrots, spinach, salad onions, turnips, peas and broad beans. You can start with all these on the windowsill then growing them on somewhere in good light. Towards the end of the month winter prune deciduous trees and shrubs including fruit trees and bushes. Mulch around all fruit trees and shrubs that have been pruned. Prune trees and shrubs to shape. This involves thinning out unwanted branches and lifting crowns slightly. If you have any over grown climbers like wisteria or ornamental vines cut them back as needed to prevent them taking over.

‘Mad Dog - An Englishman’ Lewis Moody: My Life In Rugby Lewis Moody has seen and done it all in a glittering career that has seen him win the 2003 World Cup under Martin Johnson’s captaincy, lose in the final of the 2007 World Cup after the most shambolic passage, and now lead England under Johnson’s management in the 2011 World Cup. Moody has not only been an ever-present in the England team for the past decade - a team that has featured some of the most iconic and interesting figures in British sport such as Jonny Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallaglio, and Jason Robinson - but also, until his shock move to Bath last summer, he was a key part of the all-conquering Leicester Tigers team that became champions of England six times and of Europe twice. Moody does not just explore the incredible highs, of which there are many, but also the equally incredible lows. There was the bullying at school, the time as a child when he was so near to death that the doctors advised his parents to prepare for the worst, and, later, the many occasions when he wanted to walk away from a sport that has produced so much success, when the injuries were mounting up and becoming so serious that Moody felt he had had enough. The end result is at times a painfully funny and, at other times, painfully sad story of sporting triumph achieved only after leaping major obstacles along the way.

And May had to promise to keep a terrible secret, a promise which affected the lives of all the survivors, until May herself was the only one left. Seventy years later Daisy and Marcus, sixth formers in a Gloucestershire School, are given an A Level project on the bombing of Coventry in 1940. They go to talk to May, now living in sheltered accommodation nearby; a friendship is forged which bridges the gap between them. The two youngsters have their own problems, but as their lives unfold they become involved in the strange history of May’s missing brother and of the promise, made all those years ago, which still has its repercussions today.

It allows couples to exercise together, rather than in isolation. Ballroom & Latin American dancing has the advantage over many other fitness pursuits of providing social interaction, as many friends are made when sharing classes or a dance evening, without the necessity to be outdoors in inclement weather. Lessons give mental stimulation plus physical exercise and co-ordination. Pupils learn the ability to remember patterns of steps and relate them to the beat and character of the music, which helps to keep their brain active. The physical intensity of dancing is very much in the hands of the dancer. With slow dances such as Waltz, Foxtrot and Rumba the activity can be gentle and flowing, whereas with Quickstep, Tango, Samba, Cha Cha Cha and Jive the activity will become faster and more aerobic, although each couple will decide how much effort they wish to put into each dance. Once the basic steps have been mastered, there is an almost endless number of figures and variations to be learnt which enables a couple to continue dancing for whatever length of time they wish. Many people carry on dancing well into their 80’s and 90’s as the effort involved can be reduced according to their stamina and flexibility of movement. You are never too old to start dancing. Braise shin of beef with chorizo and red wine for this long and you won’t be disappointed. Ingredients For the beef • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1kg/2lb 4oz shin of beef, cut into 4cm/1½in pieces • 225g/8oz chorizo, diced • 1 large onion, diced • 2 large carrots, cut to same size as beef • 2 large parsnips, cut to same size as beef • 2 tbsp plain flour • 300ml/½ pint red wine • 600ml/1 pint beef stock • salt and freshly ground black pepper For the dumplings • 225g/8oz self-raising flour • pinch salt • 100g/4oz shredded suet • 1-2 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped Preparation method 1. For the beef, make sure there are two available shelves in your oven and preheat the oven to 160C/320F/Gas 3. Heat the olive oil in a flameproof casserole and brown the beef. (You will need to do this in batches, so don’t overcrowd the pan.) Using a slotted spoon, lift out the meat and set aside. 2. Add the chorizo and onion to the pan and fry until softened and the fat runs from the chorizo. 3. Add the carrots and parsnips and continue to cook until tinged with colour and beginning to soften. Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour over the wine and stirring constantly, bring to the boil. Stir in the beef stock. 4. Return the beef to the pan and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover with a tight fitting lid and braise on the bottom
shelf of the oven for two hours, or until the meat is tender - check during the cooking time to ensure that the meat doesn’t become too dry. If it does, add a splash of boiled water. 5. For the dumplings, line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Sift the flour into a bowl with a pinch of salt. Add the suet and rosemary and bind together with enough cold water to form a soft dough. 6. Using floured hands and working as lightly fingered as possible, divide the mixture into eight and shape into oval dumplings. Place on a baking tray slightly spaced apart. 7. Bake the dumplings on the shelf above the beef for the last 25 minutes of the beef’s cooking time, until they are puffed up and cooked through. 8. Meanwhile, for the mash, boil the potatoes in a pan of boiling, salted water for 15 minutes, or until tender. Drain well and press through a potato ricer into a warm bowl. Mix in the horseradish, butter and cream. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 9. Serve the mash with the beef and dumplings.
