Memorabilia As both campuses of our school finish in their current format at the end of the academic year, we are looking to collect items of memorabilia relating to the history of the school. This includes old photographs, books etc – basically anything you think would make interesting viewing or reading. Any items you bring in will be returned to you at the end of the academic year. Please hunt around in attics, sheds and under beds for any articles which give an image of life in the past on either campus. Referrals and our detention system Friday 14th January 2011 Further to last week’s newsletter, we are continuing our trial with regards to being more responsive in The Right to Learn The Right to be Respected The Right to be Safe terms of school detentions for the very small number of students whose behaviour is not satisfactory. Mrs Skene’s Maths Challenge – Shaping up

These pictures were made quite simply by starting with a square, finding the half-way point on each side and joining those points up. This creates a smaller shape (which also happens to be a square) inside the original. The half-way points of this new shape are then joined up to make a third shape. This way of making new shapes is continued until it gets too small to do properly. You can, of course, start with any straight-lined shape.

It's probably good to start with a fairly large shape since it's going to get smaller and smaller each time. Here are some challenges for you to pursue: • Having made a design like one above, cut out the triangles and the smallest inner shape and rearrange the pieces to form a new shape/design. • Talk about and record the things you notice as you have drawn more and more halving lines. • What is happening to the enclosed area each time the sides are halved? (Try investigating a regular shape first.) There are 10 house points available to the first 10 correct entries to myself or your Maths teacher. Congratulations to Jessica Brooman who worked out last weeks puzzle. Mrs Skene.

ON BEHALF OF CARISBROOKE HIGH SCHOOL Uniform for the new the new school Dear Parents, This is a very exciting time to be a student at Carisbrooke as we move smoothly towards becoming a federated school with Medina. Our aim is to run an outstanding educational establishment where your child will make exceptional progress. To this end we would like parents to help decide the future uniform for the new school to open in September 2011. Impressions do count. We want our students to develop a keen sense of belonging and self-respect. The new uniform should make our students instantly recognisable as ambassadors for the federated schools, whilst taking away inequalities of dress between students and preventing extremes of fashion. As an outward display of highly professional standards we would like you to consider the items of uniform below indicating if you strongly agree, agree or disagree with the proposed items. There is also a space at the bottom of the sheet for you to make further suggestions. Students and teachers at the school will also be asked to give their opinions and we look forward to communicating the final findings by the end of March 2011 by the latest.
