Come explore the world with other University of Minnesota alumni and friends in 2020. I am pleased to present more than 40 enticing and enriching tours, carefully selected for our curious, adventuresome travelers. Travel with us and relax knowing that all the details are taken care of and you’ll have a memorable experience alongside friends, new and old. A special part of traveling with the UMAA is getting to know other Gophers and friends. We are pleased to facilitate this through our bio books, which provide information on fellow travelers prior to departure. While traveling, group members get to know each other by participating in small-group land tours, group receptions, and special gatherings on our cruises. Last year, we had more than 600 travelers go with us, averaging 12 UMAA-affiliated travelers per tour. This year, we’ve made it easier than ever for you to tell us which tours you’re most interested in. Just fill out the card at the center of the Travel Guide and mail it back to us in the postage-paid return envelope. Then, we’ll make sure you’re updated once the full tour details are available. Tokyo from a Local Perspective

T

he Imperial Palace is my favorite place in Tokyo, with its impressive moats and stone walls. The Palace’s East Gardens are a must see. The Palace is near Tokyo Station and the city’s Hibiya-Ginza area which has many theaters, museums, and restaurants. I also recommend the Asakusa Temple, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo Tower, and Sky Tree Tower. If you like hiking, Mt. Takao is easy to get to. I also love to visit nearby Hakone, where you can try ropeways, cable cars, or a boat ride on Lake Ashi with a view of Mt. Fuji.

Eat

For a unique experience, visit restaurants where you can see your food prepared in front of you. Try the counter seats in sushi bars. I like Sushi Zanmai Kiyomura, which has many branches and reasonable prices.

Sit at the counter in a yakitori (Japanesestyle skewered chicken) restaurant. My favorite is Imaiya Honten.

For hot pot dishes, such as sukiyaki and shabushabu, I recommend Imahan and Kisoji.

For delicious sweets, visit the ground floors of department stores such as Isetan, Mitsukoshi, and Takashimaya.

Experience the majestic beauty of Sedona, AZ, an upscale resort, retirement and artist community set amid the red-hued rocks of Oak Creek Canyon. Create unforgettable memories at one the world’s most recognizable natural wonders, the Grand Canyon. Norwegian Sea Like Another T Planet Iceland’s dramatic landscape will make you think you accidentally took a left at the moon.

he first thing you notice when you arrive in Iceland is there are hardly any trees. The Vikings hacked the forests down more than a thousand years ago and reforestation efforts have been hampered by the country’s loose topsoil and notoriously strong winds.

The result is a landscape that feels like it’s from another world—which is perhaps why the producers of Game of Thrones chose Iceland for many of the scenes depicting life north of Elizabeth Foy Larsen the wall. Moss the color of ripe limes creeps across pockmarked black lava. Volcanoes— some of them active—dot the vistas, as if the Universe’s most enormous giant dropped his collection of stocking caps while on an afternoon stroll. Those simmering volcanoes are but one manifestation of Iceland’s bounty of geothermal energy, which not only provides heat and electricity, but warms the popular community pools that are enjoyed by residents year round. There are strict rules about your pre-swim shower, which must be taken in the nude and includes a thorough rinse and scrub. Get over your modesty, then put your suit back on and head outside to one of the steaming “hot pots” for a soak; listen to the jumble of diphthongs that is the sound of Icelanders catching up in what serve as their defacto town squares. There are natural geothermal pools and also a hot river that winds through the Reykjadalur Valley outside Hveragerði, 45 kilometers from Reykjavik. It takes about an hour to hike there from the trailhead, which you won’t mind one bit given dramatic scenery that includes steam shooting out of vents in the steep hills. You won’t want to leave the pools, but when you do, continue south to Vik to take in the black pebble beaches and, if you are lucky, the colonies of puffins flapping their way out to sea. It’s yet another jaw-dropping sight in a country that’s chockfull of them.

No Oc

ike a scene from another era, or at least a 1950s car show, the streets of downtown Havana teem with vintage cars in technicolor rolling past a backdrop of pastel-painted buildings. Many of these lovingly maintained large-bodied sedans were inherited, with the original owners’ sons or grandsons now using them to make a living ferrying tourists around town. Not much is new and modern in Cuba. Even the mix-and-match glasses on the tabletops in the paladares (private restaurants often situated in family homes) remind me of my grandparents’ old barware. Industrious Cubans embrace and rehabilitate old items, not out of trendiness, but out of necessity as Cuba still faces shortages of all kinds. Experience Cuba and its warm, friendly people for yourself on our UMAA Cruise, Cuban Kaleidoscope, October 21 – November 1, 2020.
