INTRODUCTION - Artist Statement. It all started back in 2004, the year I moved into my first studio, swapping the spare bedroom chaos for a large space that seemed at the time quite overwhelming. I guess you could say that’s when I first became a professional artist. That winter I was really developing my own style and my awareness of the local surrounding landscape was heightened. I began making sketches from elevated windows on the fourth floor of the old cotton mill where I now took residency; this also happened to be the same views of my childhood home and school. Suddenly I was thrown into a semi nostalgic trip down memory lane; visions of journeys to and from school, and playing out with friends until dusk arrived. I can remember the mills that were still in full production, wondering if that was to be my fate as I left the cosy world of high school education. As I rambled through my not too distant memories, I could see dinner being prepared through dimly lit, steamed up kitchen windows. I noticed the back alleys of terraced houses became a glow under orange light, illuminating wheelie bins, and bizarrely the ugly skip at the end of the drive had now been transformed into a beacon of beauty as it bathed in sodium glory. Originally, the first four paintings were part of another series called ‘Street’s & Houses’ and sold within just minutes of my first open day. I then began to look closer at the subject and became fascinated with this magic hour in winter that was not quite day… and not quite night. It was like a beautiful chemistry of the natural and the man-made, drenched in artificial light.

DID YOU KNOW?

Over the next couple of years, the Government’s aim is to remove, replace or upgrade every street light across the UK to provide a more cost effective lighting system…and replace every single yellow light to achieve this goal with white ‘L.E.D’ lights. The work will involve installing new street lights and removing the old ones once they are up and running. The new lights will use the latest technology to deliver more effective white light to improve night time vision and colour recognition. Lighting in residential streets will be designed and installed in accordance with an international lighting standard. Britain’s streets will be changed forever!
