CHRIS GREEN URBAN PLANNING PORTFOLIO
About This Portfolio My name is Chris Green and I am currently studying Urban Planning at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. At present, I am in my first semester of my second year in the program. This portfolio is a compilation of various projects and assignments I have worked on during this time period. This portfolio intends to highlight skills, both creative and technical which I have developed in the program. It should be noted that much of our studio curriculum is group-project based, and while the graphics contained in this portfolio were created by me, much of the analysis and research that led to their creation was the result of the labors of my groupmates and myself.

01. Mt. Airy Forest Context Analysis For our second year studio, our semester long assignment is to research and create a development plan for the area that is now Mt. Airy Forest in Cincinnati, OH. This is purely a planning exercise, as Mt. Airy Forest is too precious a resource of Cincincinnati, and it would be a shame for it to become anything else. This is an ongoing project, and we are using a multi-step comprehensive approach to ensure our designs meet the needs of the new development, and hopefully have a positive impact on the rest of the city. At the present time, we have only completed the first portion of the project, which is to study and analyze the areas around the periphery of the forest to better understand the area around which we will be developing. A group consisting of me and two others achieved this through a series of graphics and maps that we believe communicate relevant characteristics of the area.
01. Mt. Airy Forest Context Analysis
Study Area City of Cincinnati
Our First Step was to select the context area around the forest which we would study. We chose to examine an area including each of the surrounding neighborhoods in thier entirety. This decision was made in order to ensure our information was comprehensive. To the right you can see maps highlighting our study area, and identifying the surrounding neighborhoods. Cincinnati’s neighborhoods all have a distict character and feel, so it seemed an ideal boundary unit to use for our context examination.

We felt a broad scope was important in identifying the attributes and needs of both the forest and the surrounding area.

Zoning / Land Use Our Context area is mainly zoned and used for single family residential purposes, though closer to the forest border and within the city boundary, you can see a higher concentration of multi-family housing. With these maps, we aimed to understand the areas current land use patterns, so we can later compliment them with our own zoning policies.

Metro Bus Connectivity
In order to judge the forest’s connectivity with the rest of the city, we diagrammed the surroundign road network and sidewalks, while also highlighting bus routes and bike-accessible roads. Mt. Airy is fairly well connected to the rest of the city, with some walkabilty issues caused by the freeway running directly through it as well as the blank spaces along its periphery with no access to sidewalks.

We wanted to examine the amenities available to people livng in the context area so we could use this information to ideally benefit both our Mt. Airy development and the surrounding area. While Mt. Airy is surrounded by many immenities, there are not many within walking distance of the forest. A recreation site in the forest could also server much Green Township, which is lacking in that area. There are several police and firestations which could already serve the development.

02. Mt. Airy Forest Site Analysis Our next step in our ongoing Mt. Airy development scenario project was to examine and analyze the features and characteristics of our site. We attempted to capture and communicate characteristics that would help up in our next steps of a land suitability analysis. The assignment was to be completed through a series of diagrams communicating and sharing features of the site relevant to development. We chose to focus mainly on the site’s topography, access to utilities, and climate / vegetation information in order to better understand how development could occur on this land, and where it could possibly be.

The largest stretch of flat land rexists in the northeast side of the site, which also lies around the peak elevation of 900 ft. (the lowest point being around 500 ft.) This particular area has about a 10% grade slope and potential hilltop views making it the most ideal development site based soley on topography.

Topography plays an integral role in our site, as Mt. Airy Forest’s elevation has plenty of variation, so it play a key role in where we will be able to develop.

Utilities We examined the utilities available at the site. Since it remains mostly undeveloped, most of the area does not have access to gas sewers or utility poles. This will have to be accounted for when planning for development.

03. Neighborhood Focus Project: Northside Our second semester studio of year one was spent examining a particular neighborhood in Cincinnati. The focus of our investigation was the neighborhood or Northside. Northside is a 19th century neighborhood, with a reputation for much of that archiecture and feeling remaining in tact, especially in the neighborhood’s Hamilton Avenue Business District. Our Assignment came in several parts. First was to examine the History of the neighborhood, which is important to understanding its character. Then was to examine the neighborhood in its current state and create a series of diagrams to best represent this character. Finally , after gaining a comprehensive understanding of the neighborhoodwe would devise a proposal that we thought would address the neighborhoods needs.
Northside’s History Northside is a very characteristically 19th century neighborhood. Its business district contains architectural treasures, as well as a successful display of independent businesses. It grew to a successful neighborhood thanks to its proximity to the Mill Creek, and became an important transportation corridor in the early 1800’s. Railroads began to arrive in Northside around 1846, which catalyzed its transformation from a rural society. The railroads drew industry to the area, and it became a bustling working class neighborhood. Northside was annexed by the City of Cincinnati in 1873. This is when Northside reached its peak population and building boom. Northside’s industrial economy was ravaged by the Great Depression, and the neighborhood was further damaged in the Flood of 1937. This flood heavily affected which buildings still stand today, and Northside’s varied building styles. By the 1960’s almost all industry had left Northside, and soon after it began a process of resoration as a historic site. In the 1990’s Northside became a target of the “creativeclass” and has since been very slowly becoming revatalized. While there is pending danger of gentrification and displacement, there is still time to address those issues.
Neighborhood Characteristics Northside is located within the city, only about 4 miles north of the central business district. This makes it an important location in the urban fabric of Cincinnati.

The neighborhood’s business district lies at its southern end, and has a noticably vertical shape, as it follows along Hamilton Avenue, the neighborhood’s main street. The Mill Creek also runs alongside the business district, though has realistically become disconnected due to developments along its path.

These maps were attempts to diagram the characteristics of Northside’s neighborhood business district. To communicate the higher density and urban feel of the neighborhood we felt a solid void diagram was appropriate. The circulation map highlights Hamilton Avenue as the central vein of both the neighborhood and the business district. Ownership and Land use are varied, with much of the business district’s main drag being Mixed Use / Residential.

Independent Businesses are a big part of the neighborhood character in Northside, so we though it important to communicate a few of them and their location within the business district to give a better sense of the area.
Business District Model
This cardboard scale-model of Northside’s Business District was created by importing GIS Data into 3D modeling software Rhino, and then building everything to scale height. The model was then laser-cut into pieces and then hand assembled. We thought the model was ideal for communicating the density and urban character of Northside’s Business District, as well as its centrality around Hamilton Avenue.
Neighborhood Demographics These Charts were made using census data in effort to best understand the people currently living in the neighborhood. Understanding the citizens is key when attempting to address their needs. There is a large variety of job types and income levels, as well as large variations in educational attainment. Households in Northside are slightly more likely to be a non-family household.

Access to Greenspace This diagram communicates Northside’s abundant access to Greenspace, bordering on two of Cincinnati’s most beautiful greenspaces, Mount Airy Forest and Spring Grove Cemetary. There is also a nature preserve located within the neighborhood’s borders. Even the business district has some greenspace to break up the rough, urban feeling given by the brick buildings. Housing Proposal In an effort to relieve those suffering displacement from rising property values in Northside, my neighborhood intervention proposal was the creation of the Northside Rehabilitation and Housing Equity Fund (NRHEF).
NRHEF NORTHSIDE REHABILITATION & HOUSING EQUITY FUND
A large portion of Northside’s population is below poverty status, and an even larger portion of its population is paying rent at higher than recommended income percentages. Property values are rising and the creates the danger of displacement NRHEF is a non-profit organization that aims to beautify the neighborhood’s business district by restoring vacant buildings, and to use those buildings to house residents in danger of displacement.
