lessons learnt tangerzine is a fashion showcase magazine for graduates of BIAD 2008. The purpose of this zine is to better understand the esthetic relationship of three core elements of design. Typography, Photography, and layout. These elements differ hugely in there own right yet when applied in the right aesthetic way produce a stunning piece of communication. Also through the production of this zine I have seeked to better understand the working relationship of professionals. Gaining of true understanding of job roles will prepare each of us

for the working world. Tanger-Zine has taught me much of keeping integrity within design.

others The general use of the word “the other is to use to refer to a person or thing that is different or distinct. Unfortunately these differences usually evoke quarrels and makes contradictions between people. For that reason I decided to focus in my project on finding similarity in different situations instead of focusing on the opposites. At the end of the day we are all human beings. I divided my theme in thee main captures- racism, sexual orientation and faith. Throughout my research I have realized that most of our anger about being different is coming from LOVE. Love, which is suppose to be one of the most positive element in our lives, but it is in fact actually the one element, which divides us the most. The use of dark area and the use of strong lights in my pictures should waken the feel of theatrical surrounding and the subjects are coming to play and tell stories from everyday life. It is like a frozen moment in time which takes people from different backgrounds anywhere in the world and brings them to one place where is nothing else except them and their situation. I hope through this isolation and exaggeration people will see and realize that we are really not so different and that we all act and love the same way, even though it may look different at first. I believe that in reality nothing or nobody is better or more important it just different. And different does not mean bad, as long as we can respect the other. Different is like colors in the garden, the more colorful it is the more we enjoy it. In the theme of love I was also inspired by spring, as spring is a symbol of new beginning, new life, and maybe new point of view on things. I used this inspiration in clothing, colors and the rest of the surroundings. The style and the philosophy of my photos is very similar to the style of V-magazine, which as a photographer I really like and enjoy. __________________________________________________ ______

Searching for purpose in individual thinking make up by Holly Webb - photography by Petra Setvinova Now there is an increasing number of countercultural documentaries making a mark at the box office – and in people’s hearts. The Corporation called people to question whether companies should be unbridled self-interested entities that pursue financial profit without regard for the impact on people or planet. Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price exposed the dominance of the large, cut-price superstore, challenging viewers to question whether it should continue to expand at the expense of small businesses that
7a8 have traditionally provided the backbone of local communities. Who Killed the Electric Car? provocatively examined corporate and political greed at the expense of the planet.
And now comes a challenging documentary film from an establishment figure – a movie that confronts our lifestyle and calls us all to an alternative vision. An Inconvenient Truth looks at Al Gore’s campaign to open people’s eyes to climate change. It is a passionate call to a new mission. Gore says, ‘It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely.’ Whatever else these films achieve they do get people thinking about mission and purpose. And perhaps, if we are to think clearly about them it might be helpful for us to be aware of four philosophical approaches to this question: hedonism, nihilism, existentialism and theism. Hedonism asserts that humans are essentially pleasure seekers, and our purpose is to maximize our physical sensual pleasure. The problem is (as the ancient Greeks recognized) that this focus on pleasure tends to lead to the
‘Hedonist’s Paradox’, the discovery that the search for pleasure is actually not pleasurable. That is why, psychologically, hedonism tends to lead to nihilism, the assertion that there is no purpose to life. For some this means giving up, feeling hopeless or depressed - what Friedrich Nietzsche called ‘passive nihilism’. For others it means an anarchic call to do whatever you want, regardless of the effect on others – ‘active nihilism’. Is this why some people binge drink or are anti-social in other ways?

The seeds of 2012 Olympia: the work of Emma Shipley
Motivated by the anticipation of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the print collection embodies discordant geometrics enlivened by botanical florals, designed to embellish souvenir merchandise and sports chic fashion items. Informed by the Games’ ethos of sustainability, nature collides with artificiality as regenerated technical fabrics are layered over lightweight silks for luxurious leisurewear. Illustrative botanical prints inspired by the nation’s home country will make the athletes of Great Britain and Australia welcome and at home.
