“From the outside, the building looks like a lamp...it reflects light and colour and gives an intimation of its inner life.” - Peter Zumthor

Urban Context
The Kunsthaus Bregenz museum stands like a box of light along shores of Lake Constance. This structure fills a gap within the town between the Theater for Vorarlberg and the main post office, now vacant. The main entrance faces East towards the town to welcome all people walking by, and to the right of the museum is the KUB cafe.

The square form of the structure is a big reason the Kunsthaus Bregenz has been such a successful addition to the city of Bregenz. The view above is taken from across the street showing the height similarity of nearby buildings.

KUB
The Kunsthaus Bregenz is made up of 712 etched-glass panels that create an indescribable variety of natural lighting to both enter the building during the day, and project outward at night. Within the interior, each floor plate relies on one another for all levels to function properly. There are three vertical concrete slabs that are the main support of the structure. One of the three is seen below.

“Design is a matter of concentration...it’s about intensive research.” - Peter Zumthor

Physical Model
Above is an outdoor view of the model to show the natural sunlight that becomes diffused through the etched glass faรงade, and then illuminated into the stairwell. Also, it shows the directional movement through the exhibition space as one enters the stairwell to go on to the next level. 11

An example of a different naturally lit day to show the variety of lighting effects and colors the faรงade can create. Pending on the time of day, the combination of natural and artificial light is used to achieve the desired lighting. Also above shows a detailed view of the steel frame structure and what the floor plates are made up of. 12

“It is made of glass and steel and a cast concrete stone mass which endows the interior of the building with texture and spatial composition. - Peter Zumthor

Renderings
Looking from an overhead view, this diagram is intended to should the interaction and movement amongst the different levels. Each level is separated by color. Lines of activity start at the main entrance facing east towards the town, connecting the building with the town activity. Within the building, lines show the movement throughout the exhibitions featured at the time.

This sketch overlay is designed to show the sunlight entering the building at different times of the year: during the summer and during the winter. The right half of the diagram shows the energy efficiency in both the cooler months of the year and the hotter months of the year, connecting with the sunlight analysis.

“You feel a certain way in a glass building...it has an effect on your skin. - Peter Zumthor 18
Renderings
The rendering above shows the ground floor exhibition level being both naturally lit and artificially lit. The far wall shows how it is made up completely of etched glass and the steel frame structure to allow maximum lighting for the ground level. It also shows the diffusion of people and objects from outside of the building, seen from the inside. To the right of the interior is the Kunshaus Bregenz CafĂŠ.

“I am convinced that a good building must be capable of absorbing the traces of human life and taking on a specific richness... - Peter Zumthor 22
Digital Diagrams
Model digitally pulled apart further to show the layers of glass acting as a skin to the steel, and the connection the concrete walls have with the interior and stairwell space.
23
KUB
Focusing strictly on the sunlight diffusion, this diagram shows how the combination of natural and artificial lighting enters the building and is then diffused through the etched glass to create an illumination of lighting in the stairwell, pending on the type of day. Within the exhibition space, light is passed through a drop ceiling and diffused thought the level. At night, the artificial lighting inverts outward from the museum, projecting light into the city, allowing the building to act as a light box.
