PROJECT OVERVIEW The site is set on a spur on the lower slopes of an ancient hill known as Hallam Spur and at the confluence of the River Don and the River Sheaf. This locality has a rich history being the site of Sheffield’s castle from the 12th century until its destruction during the 1648 Civil War. Subsequently the area was used for markets right up to present constructed atop of the original castle footprint. The brief placed particular emphasis on rekindling a lost affinity with the river and exposing the confluence. As a site of tangible cultural significance, it also highlighted opportunities to reaffirm the landscapes sense of place. Memory is a primary theme ingrained within the blueprint of the design. However it does not seek to solely preserve the sites’ history but to evolve it by responding to the ephemerality of the landscape fabric over time.

INTEGRATED STRATEGY
The strategy articulates a holistic network of key civic places and existing and proposed greenspaces that are physically annexed by the River Don or visually connected. The site will form a principal nexus within Sheffield’s steel route. VESTIGES OF THE PAST

THE CLEANSING BIOTOPE The arresting stature of the castle rampart and defensive moat are echoed through the scale and tiered descent of the arterial drainage system. This constructed wetland is squeezed through the extruding forms of the relic castle before descending through a series of terraced detention cells designed to attenuate runoff.

PLANTING STRATEGY To reverence the whites and blue-violet to red colour spectrum of the riparian plant communities and perennial rich grasslands prevalent circa1600; whilst not being wholly limited by this palette. Grasses are pivotal to forming the structural foil of the plantings, syncopating the cellular rhythms of the markets and evoking the imposing verticality of the castle.

The rusty weathered patina of corten steel possesses an enduring, antiquated quality that appears integral to the history of the site it inhabits despite its recent inception. The combination of corten steel and concrete elicits a very raw and industrial character. The sharp, angular railing posts are unapologetic in design and perpetuate the crude and utilitarian driven quality of the steel industry whilst the sheet piling encapsulates the heavy, tangible mass of industrial products and evokes the imposing stature of the former castle.

SOCIAL ASPECTS OF DESIGN | Owlthorpe

Playspace
PROJECT OVERVIEW The site is a neglected wild landscape on the peripheries of a residential suburb. With a loosely defined brief, the design of the playscape advocated dynamic natural play opportunities that supplemented the standard ‘kit, fence, carpet’ play equipment. Through a labyrinth of meandering paths that permeate through the site, organic shaped earthworks and an ecologically heterogenic planting palette it affords intrigue and mystery for the users and registers on all sensory levels, not just the visual.

* Visualisation and Masterplan
.... Unstimulating play experiences inspire negligence and complacency which can elicit injury; however the unpredictability of play within the natural environment forces children to exert more concentration, mastering these potential threats will instil empowerment and a sense of agency
PROJECT OVERVIEW The space currently forms a defunct pedestrian conduit between Weston Bank library and the adjacent Weston Park failing to link with the Arts Tower. The design language has been abstracted from the clinical architectural lines of the encompassing buildings. The gulf in verticality between buildings has been echoed by the imposing water cascades at the forefront of the concourse.

Rivers are capricious living systems in a constant state of flux. The design seeks to work in concert with this inherent volatility of the river; the stepped landform provides a robust solution to sustain periods of partial inundation with no deprivation to the functionality or aesthetic of the design.
PROJECT OVERVIEW The project comprised a series of sketches identifying the most discernible spatial qualities along a prescribed journey that contributed to the overall sense of sequence and fluidity. URBAN REGENERATION BY DESIGN | Serial
