This is the most exciting and innovative year ever for the UK’s most popular Pride festival. 2013 is a year of firsts for Brighton Pride. Pride 2013 began by adding a season of spectacular and successful gala shows at the Brighton fringe festival to the list of Pride events. Brighton Pride now has a presence in this prestigious internationally renowned festival. One of the major new aspects we have added to Brighton Pride this year is the upcoming Arts & Film festival (19th July – 4th August), an LGBT lifestyle based festival that will include our flagship art and photography exhibition at the famous Jubilee library (featuring a number of prints donated to Pride by the Keith Haring foundation). This is the very first Pride Arts & Film festival and includes a season of LGBT interest film screenings and a diverse selection of theatrical performances, exhibitions and special events are also part of the city-wide Arts & Film festival including the return of the muchloved Pride dog show! Everyone is looking forward to the spectacular LGBT parade that is a major focus of celebrations for the whole city. This year the parade will be packed with amazing and colourful floats and groups and will reflect our theme ‘Gay Icons’ The event itself ‘Icons on the park’ at Preston Park is set to be the most spectacular ever. The main stage has been reinstated and a star studded line-up of top artists has already been confirmed grabbing the attention of people across the UK. You can expect all your favourite attractions on the park and much, much more! Our theme is ‘Gay Icons’, join us and together we will celebrate those individuals that the LGBT community have for many reasons and over many years held up as their icons. From the flamboyant to the serious, all icons to the LGBT community tell us something about ourselves, our struggles, our values, our achievements and our hopes and dreams. Our staff, volunteers, supporters and partners are key to making Pride come to life and we would like to take this opportunity to extend a sincere thank you to everyone involved, you have helped create Pride magic! Within this guide you will find everything you need to know about the extensive attractions during Brighton Pride, events and details are added to the line-up continually and it is always a good idea to visit the Pride website for all the latest news and gossip. www.brighton-pride.org Have a wonderful time, be safe, have fun and above all be proud! Brighton Pride CIC is a group of dedicated individuals who all have extensive backgrounds in the events industry, they are also all part of the LGBT community that they serve. Brighton Pride’s directors are Paul Kemp (Aeon Events), David Hill (E3 Group) and Dulcie Danger (Sauce FM) We are grateful for the support we receive from the local community groups, local business, Brighton & Hove City Council and Sussex Police. return of the main stage a plethora of iconic acts are waiting in the wings. The return of the main stage to Preston Park as part of Pride’s ‘Icons on the park’ event has been one of the most exciting stories of the year. Jam packed with top entertainment and artists the stage is set to be one of the main attractions at Pride 2013 and central to the festivities. A wonderful platform for our message of equality, the main stage will feature introductions from special guests and information about Pride itself. In keeping with the ‘Icons’ theme we are really excited by the star studded line-up which includes such iconic artists as Ms Dynamite, MKS (Mutya Keisha & Siobahn, the original Sugarbabes) Paloma Faith and the legendary Alison Moyet! Hackney born fashion chameleon Paloma Faith will be taking to the main stage in her own idiosyncratic style. This true British eccentric who’s mega hits “New York’ and ‘Picking up the pieces’ set her firmly at the top of the international music charts is set to wow pride goers with an utterly unique live DJ set unlike any you’ve ever seen.
MKS (Mutya, Keisha and Siobahn, the original Sugarbabes) are one of the most hotly anticipated acts to take to the stage and the newly reformed, original Sugarbabes line up will be performing some of the string of massive hits that made them a household name. Lauded as ‘The most successful female act of the 21st century’ by ‘British hit singles and albums’ this iconic girl band have enjoyed 6 UK number one singles, 18 top ten hits and 3 platinum albums selling over 8 million UK units alone! Set to be one of the pinnacles of a fantastic Pride day will be the live appearance of Alison Moyet on the Pride main stage. There are few more iconic stars or recognisable voices than Alison Moyet who has been a celebrated international recording artist since her initial chart success with ‘Yazoo’ in the early 80’s, she has won numerous Brit awards and performed at the legendary Live Aid. A whole day of amazing live entertainment is scheduled from the likes of Stooshe, Lindy Layton and Hazel Dean as well as boy band action from Class A and The Mend. the brighton Pride campsite camping couldn’t be simpler at tangerine fields The campsite is a popular part of Brighton Pride. It makes the event more financially accessible (not to mention fun) for many, which makes it very important to us! We are pleased to announce that Tangerine Fields are the operators of the new Pride Campsite for 2013. We love festivals. We love camping. What we don’t love is lugging camping gear for miles and then having to take it all back. It’s not the last memory we want from a beautiful weekend. You have the option to pitch your own tent, (Just book the "Brighton and Hove Pride Camping pass".) or why not let Tangerine Fields do all the work for you ? Hire your tent and gear from us and we’ll set up camp for you. All you have to do is turn up. Start the party earlier. Get home faster. Save the muscles and lugging for more important things like kids, food and party clothes. We offer pitched 2, 4, 6 and 8 person tents and all the gear you could ever need from sleeping bags to airbeds. Better still tell all your friends. We’ll make sure you’re all camped together, no matter how late you get there. Camping couldn’t be simpler at Tangerine Fields – visit Brighton-Pride.org for more information and bookings.

iconi-city rose collis takes a stroll around gay brighton If you’re talking about ‘gay icons’, there is an argument to be made that Brighton & Hove itself is one of the biggest: after all, it’s an historical figure (with its own Royal palace, fit for any queen) embraced by many; situated near a breathtaking Dyke; full of glamour and flamboyance; temperamental, but much-loved, which endures its fair share of suffering and tragedies – and is written off by anyone at their peril.
In the 1960s, Dusty Springfield often drove down in her pink car – with girlfriend in tow – to visit her parents in Wilbury Road. Barbra Streisand prayed that it didn’t rain on her parade while filming On A Clear Day You Can See Forever in Lewes Crescent in 1970, and Marilyn Monroe went for walks along the seafront with her then husband Arthur Miller while making The Prince and The Showgirl in 1957.
But, not for nothing, our city’s done more than its fair share in the last two centuries to fulfil the unwittingly prescient observation made in 1951 by its then MP, William Teeling, who told the local Hotels and Restaurants Association, ‘There is no reason why we should not make ourselves a very gay town from now on.’ It actually started a little earlier than that: from the time George, Prince of Wales brought his social circle of royal rebels and misfits to the town in the 18th century, and set up a rather louche alternative court, and did decree himself a stately pleasure dome erect, we have done our very best to realise our honourable friend’s ingenuous vision.
Abba won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest at The Dome, spawning a thousand drag routines. Among those of a literary bent and the cliterati, Allen Ginsberg read his poetry at the Public House bookshop while Joe Orton cottaged here near St Peter’s Church. Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf, Radclyffe Hall, Gluck, Violet Trefusis and Vita Sackville-West all holidayed here, while Oscar Wilde had some dangerous liaisons in the Royal Albion Hotel. His nemesis, Lord Alfred Douglas, and Douglas’s estranged wife Olive Custance, both lived in Hove, as did Judy Garland’s lawyer.
To hear more stories about Brighton’s queer history, join Rose Collis for a ‘Pride Promenade’ or a ‘Camp Town’ tour on Sunday 28 July and Sunday 4 August. For more details or to book tickets, visit www.rosecollis.com/walkie-talkies
Dougie Byng, for whom Cole Porter wrote Miss Otis Regrets, and was the world’s first female impersonator ever to have his own live TV show, lived in Kemp Town, as did Terence Rattigan, one of the most important and influential British playwrights of the 20th century. Infamous 19th century Yorkshire chatelaine and diarist Anne Lister considered buying a house in Lewes Crescent, while enjoying a dirty weekend here with her girlfriend in 1826. And as for the litany of gay icons who performed at the Theatre Royal – take your pick of anyone from Marlene Dietrich to Coral Browne, Ingrid Bergman to Kenneth Williams. Even this year’s Pride stage headliner, Alison Moyet, lives here now. In his dotage, Lord Alfred Douglas observed, ‘I notice that in the long run nearly everyone ends by coming to live (and die) in Brighton.’ And long may it continue, so that our city stays defiantly and proudly both gay and iconic.

getting to Pride as oleta adams once said, “you can reach me by railway”... by bus Normal bus services are diverted away from the park during the day but Brighton Prides’ official bus company, The Big Lemon, are operating a special route between Brighton Station, Old Steine (near the pier), Preston Park, Park & Ride and onto the campsite on Saturday throughout the day and into the early hours. Buses will pick up from Old Steine stop S (near Revenge), every 10-15 minutes until late. Buses will return from the southern end of the park every 10-15 minutes from 2pm until late. You can download a bus schedule from Brighton-Pride.org. The fare is £2.50 single, £4 return (no passes accepted). With the exception of diversions for the parade, park and street party, Brighton & Hove buses will be operating a normal service throughout the weekend. You can find details at their website www.buses.co.uk
Southern trains mainly route out of Victoria, but they also provide services across the whole of Sussex and into Kent and Hampshire. First Capital’s services are mainly routed out of London Bridge but they also provide useful links to Gatwick and Luton Airports via their Thameslink route. The majority of last trains from Brighton leave between 11pm and 11.30pm so please keep an eye on the time if you are banking on getting the last train. Plan your journey in advance at www.nationalrail.co.uk. Remember both companies offer some great group and day return deals but (advance booking is advised you’ll save a few quid) so you may be able to get to Brighton a lot cheaper than you think.
Preston Park station If you are travelling by train and coming to the park, you should be aware that for safety reasons Preston Park Station is closed all day on August 3rd. Trains will bring you directly to Brighton Station which is only a short walk to the park.
by coach If you’re arriving by coach try and get a service that gets into Brighton by10am, as the bus station and other stops are directly affected by the road closures for the parade.
by taXi If you need a taxi whilst you are in Brighton, we can recommend Streamline Taxis 01273 202020. There will be taxi pick up and drop off at Preston Park.
by car
Park & ride The park and ride site is at Mill Road, Brighton and for those using the Park & Ride facility the return fare is included in the parking charge of £10
by train If you are coming from outside Brighton & Hove, probably the best way to reach the city is by train. Brighton Station is centrally located and just minutes from the parade route and a short walk from the Preston Park event, the seafront and all that the Brighton Gay Village (centred around St James’ Street) has to offer. We will have a team of people at the station to welcome you and point you to the Parade route or The Big Lemon Pride shuttle bus service. Train services are provided by a number of companies including Southern and First Capital Connect who are the main providers of services to London.
26
Please be aware that there will be significant road closures for part of the day of Pride. There is NO parking at Preston Park and its surroundings on the day. Parking is restricted on a large section of Madeira Drive. Parking in the centre of Brighton can be both limited and expensive, so we suggest you use the Park and Ride service from Mill Road or public transport where you can.
Planning a Journey If you want to plan a journey anywhere within Brighton & Hove the City Council offer a comprehensive journey planning website at www.journeyon.co.uk. You can plan journeys by all modes of transport, including on foot, by piggy back, roller skates if you wish, you will receive a very warm welcome however you travel to Pride.
The Big Lemon is a Community Interest Company founded in 2007. They have a Pride shuttle service from the Pride Campsite to the Park & Ride that is fun, friendly, affordable and sustainable. Check out Brighton-Pride.org for details.

the rainbow fund Thank you for supporting Pride this year, and by doing so you are directly contributing to some of our leading local LGBT and HIV/AIDS good causes through the Rainbow Fund.
Fund increasingly looks to fund frontline projects with direct welfare outcomes for our community. The Fund also has a role in maintaining the AIDS Memorial should damage occur.
As last year, the Rainbow Fund benefits from £1 per ticket sold. This raised over £30,000 last year.
The Rainbow Fund does not fundraise directly itself but benefits from a number of high profile events and activities including Pride. There are no salaries, expenses or office hire costs associated with the Fund, except in terms of the professional advice it receives in terms of administrating the Fund. All panel members are volunteers with extensive experience of LGBT issues and give their time freely.
The Rainbow Fund is a Brighton & Hove-based grant giving fund for local LGBT and HIV/AIDS charities. It was set up by James Ledward and Paul Elgood following the fundraising for the city’s groundbreaking AIDS Memorial to provide a living legacy for the project. The Rainbow Fund aims to provide the LGBT community with an independent and transparent way to ensure donated money goes straight to the local good causes who need it most.
The Rainbow Fund has benefitted from a range of high profile events and activities. Most of the leading local LGBT bars, clubs, choirs and groups have actively supported the Fund at some point. It also benefits from its media partners including Gscene.
The next grant round is open from July to early October. Local LGBT and HIV charities who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply:
Chairman of the Rainbow Fund, Paul Elgood said: "Thank you for supporting Pride, as by doing so you are contributing directly to local good causes via the
‘The Rainbow Fund wants to support community groups and voluntary organisations addressing the needs of the LGBT community in Brighton & Hove, particularly those demonstrating that either the project, or the group, is led by LGBT people. Grants of up to £5,000 will be awarded annually.’
Rainbow Fund.
The Rainbow Fund stresses that it only provides funding for frontline projects, and it is less likely to support activities such as events, culture or social economic development. The decision-making is undertaken through an independent panel. The panel members take no expenses and give their time and expertise freely, without any conflicts of interest. Over the last few years, a range of local groups have benefitted from the Rainbow Fund, including FTM, Allsorts Transformers, MindOut, Community Safety Forum, Lunch Positive, Switchboard, Sussex Beacon, Peer Action, Out in Brighton and GEMS. The Rainbow Fund reports back on a regular basis through Gscene. With growing pressures on statutory funding, the

"We formed out of the completion of the city’s amazing AIDS Memorial and since then we have steadily developed our work locally. "Again we have linked up with this year's Pride organisation, who are ensuring that £1 per ticket sold comes directly to the Fund to distribute quickly and transparently to local good causes who meet our criteria. Thank you Pride for this tremendous support. ”We have extremely limited funds and cannot fund all of the worthy projects which we receive applications from, even if we wanted to. No group has the right to Rainbow Fund money but need to demonstrate that their projects deliver frontline services for our communities. "We work to give our donors the re-assurance that the funds given will reach local good causes on a needsled basis and in a fair and open way. "Have a great Pride, enjoy the event and thank you for supporting the local LGBT voluntary sector."

access Pride Pride in brighton & hove and the fed centre for independent living are working together again this year to improve accessibility for people with access requirements to this year’s Parade and Park event. We will be operating the following facilities to ensure that we can give people access to these events in manageable ways that make the day enjoyable and safe for all. These facilities include; Park and ride close to the park (please note this has moved from last year’s venue), an area reserved for those with mobility issues on the parade route, a shuttle service to the viewing area and access tent from the car park, running throughout the day and accessible toilets. Bookings for the parking and viewing area will be taken on a first come first served basis until the car park and viewing area is full. To book please visit: www.thefedonline.org.uk or call: 01273 29 67 47.
❷
❸
❶
Please note that The Fed Centre for Independent Living and Brighton Pride cannot offer to support individuals on the day. We ask that people respect the accessible areas and only use the booking system if they need to use the facilities provided. Parking ❸ (Prestamax House, 171–174 Preston Road) Pride and The Fed Centre for Independent Living are offering a park and ride system for up to 30 cars to enable those with access requirements to attend. This must be booked in advance and admittance will be strictly for those who have booked. Those who use the car park can get a shuttle to the viewing area prior to the parade and must be at the car park no later than 10:30am, there will be no return journey running from the viewing area to the park after the parade has passed. The shuttle will travel between the car park and the Access Tent to the north of the park. This has concrete pathways to the rest of the park. Please note that motorised scooters cannot be taken on the shuttle bus, but there will be facilities to charge scooters at the Access Tent. There will be a private area for those who need it in the Access Tent. Details of the Car Park location will be sent with confirmation packs. Accessible Toilets There are accessible toilets located in all toilet areas. These are staffed throughout the day. Access to accessible toilets without paying or queuing can be obtained by applying in advance using the booking form. You will also be sent a map highlighting the location of all accessible toilets on the park, some of which are in areas not open to the public and this information is only available to those who book. Viewing Area for the Parade ❶ There will be a viewing area outside Carters Electrical at 29 Preston Road (approximately 0.4 miles from Preston Park). This area is for people with mobility issues, they can bring one person with them into the viewing area. Chairs will be available and the area staffed by security to ensure that only those who have booked can use the area. Due to traffic restrictions
36
the last shuttle will drop off at the viewing area approximately 1 hour before the parade will pass. Wheelchair area in the cabaret tent At the front of the cabaret tent there is a viewing area for wheelchair users and one personal assistant. Access to this area is at the left of the tent as you face it from the park. Spaces are limited and will operate on a first come first serve basis. Accessibility throughout the park ❷ Most of the park is accessible for wheelchairs using the concrete paths. However, there are areas of uneven ground particularly in the grassy areas. People will sit on the grass throughout the park and space can be limited. Most will respond to friendly requests to move. If you are having any problems on the day, please come to the information point (marked on the map) and we'll do our very best to help. After the Park Check out the Accessible City Guide www.thefedonline.org.uk for post-park venues and the Pride website for the after-events and parties. Feedback This is the sixth year that Pride and The Fed Centre for Independent Living have teamed up to improve access to the park and the parade for the Pride celebrations. We are hoping to continue to develop initiatives that work and are needed. We will contact those who booked for feedback after the event; your feedback will directly influence the planning of future events and is greatly appreciated. See map above for the location of the viewing area, the accessible car park and the access tent. The shuttle bus runs from the car park to the access tent at regular intervals throughout the day. danny dWyer Danny Dwyer is HIV positive. It is no secret and something he is very comfortable with people knowing. Danny tested positive in June 2008 after a period of deteriorating health. He says his life started again after the diagnosis and in June 2008, he set up Bear Patrol to create a community of friends who could meet regularly in a comfortable environment free of attitude and stigma. Danny says, “HIV for me was a massive wake up call! Within months of my diagnosis I became a lot more focussed on life. I became stronger in myself and started to feel that I was part of society again after months of feeling isolated as my health deteriorated. The stigma associated with HIV stops you from being yourself and takes away the strength and confidence inside you. I didn’t want anyone else to go through what I went though prior to my diagnosis and decided to create a family of like minded friends, which I called Bear Patrol. Bear-Patrol is here to encourage people to smile and believe in themselves... we all have a candle inside of us and I will do my very best to make sure that I light the flame of every single person that I meet (whether they have HIV or Not) and help them understand that they are Loved and Not alone! One day HIV will be beaten as I am sure as hell I will not let it beat me."
Since starting Bear Patrol in 2008, Danny and Bear Patrol have raised £50,000 towards the work of the Sussex Beacon.
helen marie carter Life began at 60 for Helen Maria Carter. After 59 years of “being trapped in the body of a man”, Helen had the first stage of gender reassignment surgery in March 2012 and has just completed the second stage at St Georges Hospital in London. After years of being physically abused by her father and dealing with the discrimination many trans people experience from society in general, Helen was finally referred to the Gender Identity Clinic at Charing Cross Hospital in 2009. Despite living and dressing as a woman for most of the last 20 years she still had to live for a further two years as a woman to satisfy National Health Service criteria for surgery. Helen is a published author and playwright and she has published a few books and papers on gender dysphoria. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health has shown interest in her writing and she has spent the last year writing about the poor aftercare she received in Brighton following her surgery in London. Helen sat on the LGBT Community Safety Forum between 1999-2002 and was involved in the creation of the Anti Victimisation Unit at Brighton Police station, a unit that dealt with victims of transphobia and homophobia. Following her recent breast augmentation surgery at St Georges Hospital in London, Helen said: “I feel like a new person. My mind has finally come together with my body. Thank God for our National Health Service."
george sydney montague Better know to everyone as the Oldest Gay in the Village, for the last few years George has proudly ridden on his mobility scooter on the Pride Parade. He came top of last months vote and says he is very proud to represent all the older LGBT people in the City on the Pride Parade. George was born in 1923 and left school in 1947, aged 14, to become a Pattern Maker. In 1941 when he was 18 he joined up to fight for his country. He was posted to Southern Rhodesia where he was promoted to the rank of corporal as a physical training instructor. On being demobbed he started his own Pattern Making business which became very successful. George realised he was gay in his twenties, when it was illegal to be homosexual. Like many of his friends at the time he married. His wife Vera, knew George’s gay friends but the issue of George’s sexuality was never discussed. George believed if he got married he could stop being gay. Of course that never happened. He fathered three children and now has three grand children of whom he is very proud. At a family gathering after his family had grown up, George decided to come out to his children and the rest of his family. He said: “Sorry guys your dad is gay”. Paula his daughter, said: “Oh daddy we've know for years.” After his coming out George lived apart from his wife and after a while they became friends again. George says: “Vera found someone who made the last years of her life far happier than I could.” On June 14 in 1997 George met his partner Somchai Phukkhlai and they are now Civil Partners. They have homes in Brighton and Thailand.

get involved - be a Pride maker We would love you to get involved with future Pride events
Brighton Pride is in continual need of volunteers to help out on the day and in the year-round planning and delivery of our events. Brighton Pride simply does not happen without the essential contributions made by volunteers who make up a huge chunk of the people power behind Brighton Pride. This is a great opportunity to meet others, become part of the Brighton Pride ‘family’, use your skills and knowledge and we’ll give you all the training and guidance you will need to perform the light tasks that we need help with. Becoming a Pride maker is a hugely rewarding experience gaining the thanks and gratitude of Pride and the LGBT community at large. Pride makers are recognized as central to Brighton Pride and becoming a Pride maker brings you numerous benefits and skills. If you can give up at least 2 hours of your time on the Parade, Park or the Dog Show or Arts Exhibition then please get in touch.
