From The President’s Desk It sure is a privilege and an honour to be installed as the President of one of the oldest Toastmasters clubs in the Middle East, not to mention one of the best Toastmasters Club in Bahrain. I thank the Nomination Committee, the Immediate Past President, the Area Governor and all the members of Manama Toastmasters Club for bestowing me with this wonderful position.. The outgoing Executive Committee excelled in their performance and placed the club standards on a higher level, thus making our job presumably difficult. However, we the new Executive Committee believe that we will not only strive to meet your expectations but shall try to surpass them. However, this will only be possible with your support.
ATM B Kishore Babu President July – December 2012

Here I must Thank the selfless services and the focused vision of all our earlier Executive Committees who worked hard to make this dream a reality. Accolades apart, this has indirectly given us a higher responsibility..To keep up with the same tradition..and Your new Executive Committee will not spare any efforts in helping to realise this Goal..

the second 10 days “Maghfirat”
which means forgiveness
from Allah and the last ten days is “Nijat” salvation from Hell.
We should learn to have mercy on everyone including
plants etc, we should learn to forgive and reconcile with people who we were upset with and we should save ourselves
from Hell by our good deeds. The last ten days are special as prayers increase, even at night as people stay up very late to pray. Muslims also go for Pilgrimage which is Mecca as it is believed that the rewards are increased in Ramadhan.
So many people go for a few
days in Ramadhan and come back. One of the last ten days in Ramadhan has a night which is called “Lailat el Qadar” and its called the faith night.
Article It is believed that Allah and the angels come down to earth and the wishes of people who pray will be granted. This is not known which precise night this will be, however it is believed
that it falls on an odd night. Ramadhan is just like a mark or a calendar stop where people detox and purify themselves. It is a reminder that we should not just be like that in Ramadhan but throughout the year.
Ramadhan is a reminder for us to go back to good
deeds and offer something to Almighty in the form of our prayers and thanks for all the goodness and worldly things we have in our possessions. May Allah bless us all with good deeds and may Inshallah what we have in terms of health, food and wealth flourish by our goodness.

Interview
During the past couple of months we have had some newcomers who have been eager to begin their Toastmaster journey. Within a week or two of their joining, two of our latest additions, Syam Kumar and Kunal Purohit jumped headfirst into their first speech, the Icebreaker. We took the opportunity to interview them so that they could air their views.
Syam Kumar
Kunal Purohit
Syam and Kunal, how did you learn about Manama Toastmasters? Syam : I learned about the Toastmasters clubs through Gulf Daily News and some friends who had been to the toastmasters meetings. I learned about the Manama Toastmasters in particular through the toastmasters.org website.
Interview Kunal : I first learned about Toastmasters from my friends who shared their experiences of selfdevelopment in terms of enhanced public speaking and leadership skills. I learned about Manama Toastmasters from a fellow Toastmaster in Bahrain.
What
made
you decide to Toastmasters?
join
Manama
Syam : Manama Toastmasters was the first club i visited as a guest. After the first meeting itself, I was sure that this was the club I wanted to join. What attracted me was the quality of the club and the friendliness of the members who were all very eager to help. I did not check any other clubs out and immediately joined Manama Toastmasters. Kunal : Although I visited Manama Toastmasters three times prior to making my decision, it was at the first meeting itself that I realised that it was right club for me to be part of. I was particularly impressed with the rich experience of the fellow members and saw them as a good source of guidance for my development
Interview How did you feel after your first speech which is the Icebreaker? Syam : Phew! I was relieved. I am now more confident and ready for more action!! Kunal : Delivering the Icebreaker was not as intimidating as I first thought, thanks to the encouraging support of my audience. I felt fantastic about confidently being able to deliver a speech in which I spoke about the various experiences of my life. A constructive feedback and words of appreciation from fellow members has boosted my morale to perform better each time! What
do
you
hope to achieve Toastmasters?
in
Manama
Syam : Rather than focusing on the goals or titles to achieve, I want to enjoy the toastmasters experience as an active member of the club. Kunal : I see Manama Toastmasters as a trusted platform for me to enhance my public speaking and leadership skills. I aim to achieve the confidence to communicate more effectively with people from diverse cultures and age groups.
Interview Syam and Kunal, what is your main ambition in life? Syam : Apart from my professional and personal goals, my main ambition is to live life to the fullest!! I want to be happy and make the people around me happy and keep them smiling!!. Kunal : My ambition is to be successful. Surely, we all define success differently. To me it means to become an accomplished corporate professional, contribute to the society and care for the planet!
Well, Syam and Kunal we at Manama Toastmasters are glad to have you join our family and I am sure that I speak for all our members when we wish you the very best of luck as you begin this life changing journey. Rest assured that we are all here to help make this journey a little easier as you soar to great heights.

Speech
Ice Breaker By TM Kunal Purohit
I am lucky to have been born into a wonderful family. Being the youngest of four siblings, needless to say I have been pampered a lot and much like how everyone feels I too believe my parents are the best in the world. I come from Rajasthan state in the north western part of India. It is a place that is very popular among tourists round the year. Also, I must say I am very fortunate to have been born and spent the better half of my life so far in a beautiful country like Bahrain. Through greetings exchanged with Arab friends on Ramadan and Eid, playing a game of soccer and meeting for casual socializing, I got well acquainted with the Arab culture. I did my schooling at the Indian School Bahrain and I am sure like most of us here, I too loved my days of schooling. Schooling in Bahrain was fun. Besides the quality of education, the sports infrastructure too was impressive. I personally used to enjoy competing in 100 meters race. So when I was in the third grade I qualified in the finals of a 100 meters race which took place at a stadium in Isa Town. To my disappointment though, I stood 4th and lost the opportunity to flaunt a medal I so would have liked to have won. Nevertheless, I went on the win silver and bronze medals in the years that followed.
Speech
While in Bahrain, I always had the opportunity to visit my home country, India every year during summer vacations. However, by now, I had completed my schooling in Bahrain and was returning to India to pursue a four-year course in Mechanical Engineering. It was while I was studying engineering that I realised for the first time that life was not easy. With thick books to read, deadlines for assignments to be met, it was easily the most challenging period of my life. Fortunately, some good friends made life great. Along with them, I explored a large part of the country using literally every means of transport from the more conventional types like bus and train to the rather traditional, bullock carts. While my trips across the country, I came across several people who lived below poverty line. Seeing them toil to earn a meager dollar per day moved me. Yet, despite the adverse circumstances in which they lived, I was amazed to see how happy some of them were in their simple lives. Such experiences made me a humble person. So after a grueling course in engineering when I felt I did not had enough, I went to pursue higher education to the nation where the Industrial revolution was born and where great scientists like Sir Isaac Newton made discoveries that has made human life so blessed. Yes! I am talking about the United Kingdom!
Challenge Yourself!
Speech
Apart from appreciating the quality of air, world-class infrastructure and friendliness of the people; one thing that has struck me the most about United Kingdom is the perfection in communication by the people. I observed that a lot of emphasis is laid on communicating even a point that may be assumed to be taken care of by everybody themselves. For instance, the announcement at tube stations for us to mind the gap between the speeding train and the platform. It taught me the importance of communicating effectively, leaving nothing for chance or being taken as understood. So, in Bahrain I experienced the beauty of arab culture and hospitality, learned the virtue of humbleness in India and the importance of effective communication in the United Kingdom. Each experience has influenced me and molded my personality and characteristics. We live in the age of globalization, where due to trade and tourism countries and hence cultures and come closer than ever before. We live in the age when, although to varying degrees, we have all have become what I would call a Global Citizen. A global citizen I would define as a person whose personality, character and attitude has been developed through the experience and knowledge of more than one culture. So fellow toastmasters, through the various experiences that I have had in life and what I have become in process, if I were to conclude who I am, I would say I am a Global Citizen!
New Airline Food Policy It was mealtime during our trip on a small airline in the South. “Would you like dinner?” the flight attendant asked the man seated in front of me. “What are my choices?” he asked. “Yes or no,” she replied.
Speech
Ice Breaker By TM Syam Kumar
At what age were you the happiest? This was a question asked in a survey conducted by a social networking site based in UK. Most people replied they were happiest when they were 33. I had just turned 33 when I read this and I thought to myself “What can I do to make this year a special one? When I look back after 1 year what shall I see as my gain, other than a receding hairline and the ever exceeding waistline? I looked at my bucket list and the To Do list. Joining Toastmasters was on the top of the list, so I took a long hard look at my soft skills and decided to join Toastmasters. So here I am. I was born in Trivandrum, a city in south India. After finishing my studies at my home town I joined a college about 100 km from my home because I got my desired branch of study ie Electronics and Communication Engineering in that college.
Speech It was in another state of India, Tamil Nadu where they all spoke a different language. It was the first time I had left home and I must say that it was a new experience for me. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life was my motto when I started searching for a job. After working at a small company for 2 years, I got my dream job. It was in Asianet, one of the biggest Internet Service Providers in India. I was yearning for a job there. Asianet was like a university for me. I worked there for 5 years and got experience in ISP operations, transmisson etc. When I got an offer from a company in Bahrain in 2008, I was in two minds ..whether to come here or stay at my home town itself..because I was happily settled there....Later I decided to come to Bahrain and get some international experience. My dream is to enjoy life, to be happy, to contribute something to society which will be remembered even long after my death, bringing a smile to people around me.
Speech As I was growing up, my father was my role model. Even though he is not a Toastmaster, he is an excellent public speaker and an efficient leader. My hobbies and interests include reading, travelling, watching movies—the heading of this is the title of one of my favourite movies. I enjoy going for long rides in my bike, combining all these passions together I would like to go for a journey on my bike and write a travelogue about it.
Just like everyone, I also have set some goals for my professional and personal life. I learn something new everyday. I am currently pursuing an MBA in Telecom Management. Now I have discovered that real joy is found when you leave your comfort zone. Even if I achieve a few of my set goals, I will be happy as long as I stick to my core values and principles which is more important to me.
Speech Tips
For many people, the thought of giving a speech in front of a group can be terrifying. Even if you are comfortable with public speaking, it can be difficult at times to figure out what to speak about. Here are a few simple tips to help you select a speech topic that will wow your audience every time: Think about your audience. The first thing you should always do is put yourself in your audience's shoes and consider what they would like to hear and why. Who are you speaking to? What do they care about?
Speech Tips Connect. If you have an idea for a topic, look for a way to relate it to your audience. Don't just talk about a topic in general - try to help your audience understand and care about it Consider your own knowledge and background. What do you care about? The easiest speeches to deliver are ones on a topic that you know inside and out. Your own passion and knowledge about a subject will come through in your presentation with very little effort. Look for timely topics. Pick up a newspaper or check the headlines on the Internet. Sometimes an interesting story can spark your creativity. Plus, it gives you a great way to open your speech.
Consider what actions you would like your audience to take when you finish speaking. How should they feel after hearing you? What would you like them to do? Instead of just speaking about a topic, think instead about trying to persuade your audience to take a certain action or change a belief or behaviour.

Indoor Summer Activities
Here in Bahrain, so many people find the hot sun and heat intolerable. For a variety of reasons, for those
people, the summer doesn’t bring the enjoyment of going to the beach, an amusement park, or having an outdoor picnic. Trapped in the house because of allergies, asthma, medication, or a deep aversion to heat, many people miss out on months of comfort. This is for those who have a supreme dislike to the sun and heat. Hot weather makes you ill. A heat wave strikes terror in the mind of a person who sweats at the drop of a hat. It means wet clothes, limp hair, a wet
handshake, skin rashes, and bugs that come out with venom in their veins and an overwhelming need for human blood.
Indoor Summer Activities No one
wants to be held
hostage to the weather. When the sun goes down, there are many activities that can be
enjoyed. Here we address those activities that can be done
during the sweltering day time or a heat wave. These summer places and activities will keep you cool and comfortable. You can stay home in your air conditioned home all summer. But, nobody wants to do that. There are things that can be done in spite of the long, dry, sweaty heat of the day. There are air conditioned places where you can stay for hours to escape hot days and times when the electricity goes out in your neighborhood because of power overloads. Stay home and cool all summer and read a few books. Clean the house. Or,
indulge in any or all of these adult
daytime
indoor
activities: http://www.manamatoastmasters.blogspot.com
Indoor Summer Activities Visit the Bahrain National Museum. When was the last time you visited it? Take a drive to this historical museum and re-connect with history. Go for a movie. The summer is famous for blockbuster movies. You could go every week. Take a friend. Don’t just see movies of your favorite actors. Visit Libraries. Ever visit the British Council? Go to their website and see their schedule of activities. Bowling. Get some friends together for a few hours of bowling at places such as Funland or at Magic Planet in the Bahrain City Centre. Indoor Ice Skating. Funland also have an indoor ice skating rink. Invite some friends to join you.
Create an Informal Club For People Who Hate Heat. Find some kindred spirits who know how to avoid the heat in style. Plan some heat avoidance activities. Perhaps your friends or family will have some suggestions for additional things to do.
Indoor Summer Activities Take a Day or an Overnight Trip To Hawar Islands Or Al Dar. This is a bit pricy but if you really want to get away from it all, it is worth it. You can stay inside, have breakfast, lunch and dinner, and enjoy the
summer air without being soaked by it. Visit an Ice Cream or Coffee Shop. When was the last time you went to Baskin Robbins or Starbucks? Some of these places are famous for allowing laptop users or newspaper readers to buy a cup of coffee, a
sundae, or a soup and salad, and stay for hours. Some business people even hold meetings there. It’s cheap, cool, and the environment is relaxed, inviting, and informal. Shop at the Mall. With so many malls to choose from, this is the original place to stay cool. Stay at one for hours, power walk, have lunch with a friend, or move around from mall to mall.
Indoor Summer Activities
Indoor Pools. Here in Bahrain, outdoor pools can be terrible for those trying to
avoid the rays of the sun or the heat. There are owners of private villas who rent their pools on a daily basis. These include showers and an air-conditioned
room which provides relief for those less brave souls. Join a Gym. Take a yoga class or just relax if you do not feel like working out.
You can be cool for the summer. Beat the heat and have fun doing it!!!!

Health Watch
By TM May Abdul Aziz
I know, I know‌Green Tea is not a new concept but I think it is very important to highlight certain health tips so that there can be a lifestyle change for the better. After all it takes is small things to make major changes. Experiments prove that there is a connection between green tea and losing weight as it helps the body in burning fat. In addition to the above, several other benefits also include controlling the aging on the face, cancer protection and it always empowers the body in sports and other physical activities. I suggest having a cup of green tea before starting any physical activity as it will help in increasing the body metabolism.
Health Watch
It is essential to drink green tea on a regular basis but at the same time, do not exceed the maximum quantity of 3 – 4 cups per day. For quick results, it is advised that you take it during breakfast and half an hour after each meal. However, it is also to be noted that it is vital to have a cup before you go to bed. There is a debate as to whether fresh or packed green tea is more beneficial. I feel that fresh green leaves are more healthier. For better results, I advise keeping three small green leaves in hot boiled water for three minutes and then removing them before drinking. For convenience sake, you can use the packed green tea bags, but be careful to not keep the bag in the hot water more than five minutes.
I wish you all good health. Here’s to new beginnings‌.

Dear Toastmasters, Welcome to a new edition of The Horizon – July & August 2012. This issue we take a look at a word that should be a part of our everyday life – ENTHUSIASM. We at Toastmasters always appreciate others, feel deeply and laugh often. Laughter helps enthusiastic people keep things in perspective and just as they are open to joy, they also allow tears. So many times after I have delivered my speeches, I have been approached by our members showing their concern and support. This is what enthusiasm is all about. This term our challenge to you all is to Challenge Yourself to be more enthusiastic and dare to take risks. Have the courage to finish the projects you swore you would complete. You all possess a special driving force to guide you through the roadblocks. Remain focused on your mission and be guided by your inner voice, your intuition.
