FORM EXPLORATION
Sketch Plan
When creating the primitives we employed techniques such as twisting, bending and creasing as a base for our form, surface logic and structure. The bending technique transformed the primitives by creating a relationship between each volume, that allowed the forms to follow specific functions with programmatic response. The exterior expression is based on the idea of canopy-like structures with subtle biological mutations and local symmetry. For zoning connections each villa has a height in relation to the existing residence, with setbacks on the lane (south façade) providing parking. Our main volume, The ‘ Twisting Lady’ addresses the corner by creating a sensual invite that accommodates the main entry, the lobby, restaurant penthouse and inviting vehicular traffic for drop off and valet parking.

The apertures are perforating the faces in relation to their surface logic. We pulled individual creases apart to create aperture and suggest entries on the faรงade of the villas as well as terraces to provide accessible exits. The more extreme the pleating of different surfaces the more pronounced structure, and the more variety along self replication.

The design solution aims at creating a structure AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE connecting students and staffs to the advance retrieval system below ground that houses the library’s collection while establishing a connection between the old and new. It encompasses a grand reading space with a sunken reading area, private reading pods and offices spread over some 250,00sq.ft of built-up area and a state of the art underground retrieval system.

In designing the museum for companions I focused on experimenting with the idea of old vs. new. Inspired by Rome’s urban context specifically the way people moved within ther piazza, I approached the design by dissecting the natural movement around Piazza Della Rotunda. Hence, creating a form that embraces the site.

Surrounded by roman style architecture in a dense city with limited open spaces. The choice of materials was aimed at transparency while framing views within the piazza. The overall transparency is achieved by enclosing the building in the glass and wooden stripes were placed is areas of no interests hence framing views within the piazza.

The James Monroe Public Library building design is composed of a series of interconnected volumes aimed at reconnecting the triangular shaped site back into the urban city scape. The building is a contemporary solution that draws inspiration from surrounding building elements, creating an architecture that embraces its context. The concept of re-connection is evident at the point of entry in middle volume that draws an axial connection from the adjacent site.

Urban design combines the arrangement of buildings public space, streets, transport, and landscape. These elements of urban design create an identity to the urban lay out, giving it form, shape, and character to form groups of the urban elements. The network of components such as squares, streets, and blocks create the connection between the urban fabric. The functionality of urban design integrates architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning to achieve functional, aesthetically pleasing, and a lasting value for the community. The goal of urban design is the connection between people and places, movement, and urban form, nature and the built composition. These goals transcend on the meaning of urban design, collaborative and multi-disciplinary process of shaping the physical setting for life in cities, towns and villages; the art of making places; design in an urban context.

Phase 4 (2042-2052)
Creating a sustainable neighborhood, city and mega city to further expand Savannah city urban fabric. The concept consisted of three major parts: RECONNECT, CORE, AND PRESERVE. The Reconnect to the historical patterns of the urban settlement and to form a framework to reconnect the old with the new. The reconnection between the new and the old will further expand the historical and typology of the city of Savannah. The Urban CORE, bringing a further development of public space, landscape, and a financial infrastructure to the city. The core serves as a central mix use and commercial zone that creates a strong focal point of the development of the master plan. PRESERVE, Savannah a city rich in wetlands and estuaries that generate a natural habitat for wild life. Persevering the wetlands not only benefits the wild life, but also gives the opportunity to expand the waterways and form water run offs throughout the site. These three components well help retrofit the city for sustainable, ecological solutions and historical integrity.
