Ram Van Shelter Design 8 Professor Thomas Kirchner

Philadelphia University has an on campus shuttle service. The current shelters are canvas pop-up tents. This two week project focused on connections. This Ram Van shelter uses a modular unit that can be configured differently to create more or less shelter. Also a tensile system is used so that the supports touching the ground could be minimal, which allows for maximum space under the canopy. The shelter is composed of the canopy, support and foundation. There would also be an integrated bench for comfort of the user.

Habitat For Humanity Headquarters Design 6 Professor David Qaudrini

STUDIES

Philadelphia’s Habitat for Humanity is in need of a new headquarters. They need to add a Restore and a larger warehouse. Through a series of program studies I figured out that Habitat for Humanity is more than just a non-profit construction company. They build, sell, teach, and council customers. The new headquarters would need to organize and illustrate these pieces of program. The Restore is positioned along the street edge, giving accessibility to potential buyers. The offices and teaching areas connect the Restore and warehouse.

Eco Clean Design 9

Professor Susan Frosten Teammates: Lauren Printz, Christina Reggio

STUDIES

CSO (combined sewer overflow) was developed to alleviate the pressure on the sewer systems in Philadelphia. The Delaware has many CSO points. Eco Clean is the solution to the CSOs. Eco Clean is a living machine that filters storm/ sewer water before it is dumped into the Delaware River. Eco Clean can filter upwards of 60,000 gallons of sewage a day. Eco Clean also teaches about importance of water in our world today, through hands on and visual learning experiences visitors learn about the system

New Pathways Design 8 Professor Thomas Kirchner AISC Steel Competition

New Pathways is a Homeless Assistance Shelter, which helps Philadelphia’s homeless population. The program is composed of mostly SRO (single resident Occupancy). New Pathways blurs the line between the homeless and nonhomeless, by creating a park which connects to Penn Park, and retail space that is for public use. Having two types of users is the key to helping the homeless, who is normally cast out of society, integrate into society. The steel design is unique to create a statement in the city.

MSSD Design 5

Professor Brian Johnston

STUDIES

MSSD (Masters School for Sustainable Design) is a unique problem in how to connect graduate students with undergraduate students at Philadelphia University. The design connects the student center and library through its form, and in doing so creating a large quad for both undergraduate and graduate students to connect. MSSD’s curriculum is based on a strong relationship between teacher and student, so the design of the spaces creates a relationship between floor and wall.

Live Work Design 5

Professor Brian Johnston

STUDIES

Working and living in the same building is very cost effective and efficient. This project is a bicycle repair and retail as well as a home for the owner. This bike shop incorporates a ramp system that can be used as an indoor test track as well as getting bikes from one level to another. The structure is based on the geometry of a bike frame. The shading device which you can see in the studies is designed after the spokes of a bicycle wheel. The interesting facade creates signage for the bike shop. Bike enthusiasts and everyday bicyclist will love this building.

Pattern Deformation Design 10 Professor Kihong Ku

STUDIES

Parametric design and programming are working its way into architecture. This project is an example of this movement. Through the study of character relationships in a film, I wrote a program for a machine to deform a pattern which illustrates the character relationship of cause and effect. My final construct uses an infrared sensor to detect the distance of the user. The codes reads this distance and puts it through a series of if else statements. The final result is deforming a pattern by using rotating and linear motions.
