THE RING is a social housing project which is situated on the currently empty fallow that borders the 26km long watercanal in the city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. During the rainy season the canal fills with water in a matter of hours, and yet remains empty for the rest of the year. The project integrates the typical Bolivian courtyards found in the city centre into the design, and aids in creating affordable housing within the city, as opposed to the current segregation. Traditional stacked clay roof tiles create an open unobstructed facade that adapts to the tropical weather and offers privacy when viewed from the outside. Wooden slats make it possible to rearrange the rooms and adapt to the needs of the user. When open, all the spaces transform into a mass courtyard.

RE GREEN RE CONNECT Three thematically organized skyscrapers - education, production and recovery - enable the creation of a new neighbourhood, without jeopardising the existing infrastructure. Urban squares, bicycle and pedestrian paths, sports and play landscapes emerge, meandering along the green islands. The theme of the ‘green islands’ not only shape the character of the district, but also the internal organization of the buildings. The towers are organized into repetitive spatial structures that always comprise of four floors. These include living green space in the form of greenhouses and other semi-public uses that can be combined with living. Square wooden grilles that allude to windows found in a greenhouse give the impression of living within such a building. The open floor plans grant the feeling of living or working in the greenhouse all year round. Residents would experience and perceive “green” in an array of situations and forms.

HIGH-RISE is a housing proposal located around Museum Island in Berlin’s City Centre. The residential tower is divided into three-story packages that repeat and rotate along a vertical lane. The circulation is open to the three-story high courtyards oriented about the facade. Every courtyard has a different common use such as workshops, day-care, cafes and gardens. The slow transition from the courtyard to the residential units and their private loggias are given by common terraces shared by five to six apartments. The main structure is built by a reinforced concrete tube and fireproof concrete floor division, occurring every three floors. The apartments substructure of wood panels is designed to be rearranged and organized by the owners. This inner structure is also visible amidst the facade.

KRONACH University and temporary student housing was a project for a closed competition for the City of Bamberg. Our design proposed three buildings that collectively shape a new campus square. Two of the courtyard buildings offered single and double rooms for temporary accommodation, each with the same self-design furniture for easy, compact and flexible use of space. The learning spaces in the room, as well as optional seating furniture can be opened towards the corridor to increase a sense of community without jeopardising privacy.

FREIRAUM is a symbiosis of living, learning, nature and commerce, located south of the “Park am Gleisdreieck”. The optimal south orientation of the greenhouse was a decisive aspect for the design of the building. The main concept was to centre the greenhouse at the heart of the building, and set the temporary housing, cooking school, and restaurant around it. During the winter, this heart becomes a thermal insulating façade. In summer, it transforms into a public garden/green-roof that cools and shields the interior from the sun. The heat generated in the greenhouse is consumed by “Absorberboxes” for the ventilation and air conditioning of the building. For the purpose of energy and resource conservation, rainwater is collected in a reservoir via inbuilt troughs in the roof. This water is stored in a tank and is designed to supply the building and a 2,600 m2 acreage with a sustainable supply of water.

WIESENBURG festival which took place in a former homeless shelter gave us the opportunity to design and build our first semi-permanent structure and work first hand with people from the community. The pavilion was designed for a local school and offered a green learning and workshop space for children, where they could learn about urban gardening and have the freedom to organize and rearrange their own space. Flexible cubes designed to transform into playscapes, shelves, flowerpots and chairs were built out of PVC recycled expo signs. The bamboo roof structures were secured through knots made from recycled hose and were designed to collect water that was used to irrigate flowerpots. This project was one out of five nominated projects for Urban Intervention Award Berlin 2013.
