Kia Ora There’s a busy schedule of fun activities planned for the city’s libraries over the coming months creating lots of opportunities for residents and visitors to try something new. The diverse mix of cultures that make up our city will be celebrated through Chinese Language Week in September and the Pasifika Language Weeks held throughout September and October. People will have the chance to learn some basic phrases in these languages and more about the customs and crafts hailing from these lands. There is also a spotlight on te reo Māori, with Māori Language Week running from 9–15 September. This is our chance to recognise the Māori language as a unique taonga for all New Zealanders, with library visitors even able to use a Reo Māori option on our self-issue kiosks during the week. Another highlight will be the events that have been planned to mark the 50th anniversary this year of Margaret Mahy’s A Lion in the Meadow — the first book she ever had published. A giant copy of A Lion in the Meadow will be travelling around the city’s libraries and children will so have the chance to dress up as their favourite character from one of Margaret’s books and win a book prize at a special event in December.

Diwali 2019 What is Diwali? Diwali or Deepavali is a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and renewal of life. It is a time for friends and families to gather, share food and look forward to the year ahead. Originally a Hindu festival from India, Diwali is now celebrated by communities around the world by the symbolic lighting of lamps or diya and fireworks as a symbol of bringing positivity and light into our homes and communities. The festival falls in either October of November each year, depending on the cycle of the moon, and coincides with the Hindu New Year.
How to celebrate Diwali in your home and community Diwali is about enjoying great food and sweets with family, friends and neighbours. Often people will invite friends to their home to share in celebrations or take a plate of sweets to their neighbours. Light candles and lamps throughout your home to fill it with positive energy and the Diwali festive feeling. As a family or household this invites positive energy and hopes for the coming year into our home. Get dressed up and dance. Hindu families will often wear their newest and best clothes on Diwali to celebrate the New Year. Diwali is like Christmas and New Year wrapped into one. Celebrate with your friends and family and come together to share your hopes and dreams for the coming year ahead. Diwali Shubhkamnaye Happy Diwali from our families to yours

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2019 Māori Language Week 2019 9-15 Mahuru / September 2019 Since 1975 New Zealand has celebrated Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week, recognising the Māori language as a unique taonga for all New Zealanders. Christchurch City Libraries have supported the kaupapa of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori over the years in a number of ways, endeavouring to promote the week as a time for learning and celebrating te reo Māori. Check out the Reo Māori option on our selfissue kiosks during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori again this September.
The hei tiki logo for the week is an iconic symbol and depicts strength, leadership and pride within our nation. The kanohi (face) represents the ever changing face of Aotearoa. The arero (tongue) is brightly colored to symbolise the overarching key messages for the campaign, which include strengthening the status and acquisition of the Māori language as well as strengthening people’s determination to use it. The arero as a whole represents the revitalisation of te Reo Māori as a living language and as an ordinary means of communication Te Reo Māori is a living, breathing language, visible in our schools and public places. Nowadays it’s common to hear Reo Māori being spoken on our favourite TV shows like Shortland Street, What Now and even the News. So if you haven’t started already, now is a great time to look at learning the Māori Language or brush up the language skills you already have.
Te Taura Whiri I te Reo Māori are hoping that more organisations, companies and community groups than ever will plan to take part in Māori Language Week this year. Following on from the success of last year the theme for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2019 will stay “Kia Kaha te Reo Māori — strengthening the Māori Language.

Nā reira, kia kaha te Reo Māori – karawhiua — therefore let the Māori Language be strong – give it a go.
