Welcome.... With the summer holidays in full swing there is a lot going on in Southbourne this month. The main event, which you’d be hard pressed to avoid, is the Bournemouth Air Festival, taking place on the seafront from 18th – 21st August. This amazing event is one of the largest free events in the UK and will see the welcome return of the Red Arrows who will fly daily at 3.45pm. As well as all the other air displays there will be fireworks on Friday and Saturday at 10pm. I will enjoy sitting on my little boat in the Bay and watching all the action. We have a new page in the magazine for you, Days Gone By in Southbourne. We are lucky enough to have access to an archive of old images, supplied by The Red House Museum in Christchurch and the Hampshire Cultural Trust. I’m sure a lot of you will enjoy looking at the images of Southbourne of yesteryear. A final note from me, if you have any community events or if you run a club, class, group or society in Southbourne we’d love to hear from you. You can list them in the magazine for free by submitting them via our website. We know there’s lots going on out there so please share it with us.

Southbourne has intriguing Russian connections. During the summer of 1894 Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, stayed at Tuckton House, a large detached property in Saxonbury Road. Nearby, at 42 Belle View Road, was a holiday home called ‘Slavanka’ which was owned by Countess Tchertkov, the mother of Tolstoy’s editor Count Vladimir Tchertkov. Hardly surprising then that, when he was expelled by the Russian regime, Tchertkov settled in Southbourne and set up a printing press in the old Bournemouth Gas & Water Company pumping station in Iford Lane. From 1900 to 1913, it housed Tchertkov’s Free Age Press and printed works by Tolstoy banned in his native Russia. The commune, based at Tuckton House, included Tchertkov’s family and thirty or so fellow Russians who had moved to the UK rather than live in exile in their own country. They followed an austere regime adhering to strict Tolstoyan principles. Life was Spartan and personal possessions were discouraged. In January 1902 the Daily Mail reported: ‘The inmates rise at six o’clock, the majority beginning the day with a sea bathe at Southbourne. At about nine a mouthful of vegetarian food is snatched, followed by work till one when a light vegetarian lunch is eaten. Then work again until seven or eight when the meal of the day is partaken.’ The article goes on to say that ‘all members of the community sit down together, no-one serving, no-one acting as servant.’ Tchertkov stored Tolstoy’s handwritten manuscripts at Tuckton House in a strong room with eighteen-inch thick walls. It was considered to be safe from fire, damp, bomb and earthquake. More than sixty of Tolstoy’s essays and letters including The Slavery Of Our Time
(1900) and Patriotism and Government (1907) were printed there. The press even published a newspaper Hattie on rice paper that could be folded and sent to Russia as an ordinary letter. In an article by Chris Munnion (1957), a Mrs Brown who worked at Tuckton Post Office in the early 1900s told him “The Russians came to my Post Office frequently. They posted masses of revolutionary literature.... I especially remember Count Tchertkov - he was a fine upstanding character with bright red hair and a red beard, but he spoke very gently and was very kind.” In 1908 Tchertkov and most of his group returned to Russia but with a small team remaining the press continued to publish until 1913. Now there are pleasant riverside houses on the site of the old waterworks and in 1965 Tuckton House was demolished and replaced by new houses. Countess Tchertkov lived at Slavenka until her death in 1922. It was a Christian Conference Centre until 2006 when it was demolished to make way for the Sunrise Senior Living care home. Stephen Nagle Reflections The club supports a number of different schools and one of the things we do quite frequently is to participate in ‘Mock Interviews’ with the students, to provide experience of job interviews. The interviewer/interviewee roles were recently turned on their head when we participated in a ‘Reflections’ project at Avonbourne College for Year 8 students. For this project the students first drew up a list of questions appropriate to ask ‘older’ people that would require them to reflect on their life and their life experiences. Arriving at Avonbourne, we were greeted by Year 7 students and very politely escorted to a waiting area where we were served refreshments. The teacher in charge gave us a short briefing and then we were taken to the hall to meet with our interviewers! Each Rotarian was interviewed by a group of 5 students seated around a table. My group was well organised and they each took turns to ask me questions. Some of these required a bit of thought, such as ‘What was my biggest regret?’ My answer was, not learning to play a musical instrument. Following this, the students were then to complete their own self reflection tasks and combine both to produce presentations. The idea was to take the students out of their comfort zone and allow them to develop their confidence and social skills.

I think that this month I am going to re-visit the subject of people getting separated from one another.

Mostly we are talking about lost children but this can also be a problem for older people as well. When you first arrive on the beach you should try to find a place where you can meet up if you get separated. Make sure the younger people in your group are aware of this location and get down to their eye level when pointing it out so you know they can actually see it! Secondly, get a ‘Kidzone’ wristband and write your phone number on it. Take a photo of everyone so you know what they are wearing. All of this will help should a child wander off but it won’t necessarily prevent it. Recently I have been trained in Flood Rescue and water searching techniques. This also included searching skills and quite pleasingly I found out that the ‘official’ search techniques are exactly the same as the way we’ve conducted lost child searches for nearly 30 years on Bournemouth beach. The first thing to do when you realise someone is missing is to tell the lifeguards immediately. This will start the search process and the missing person may still be in visual range and found easily. It will also result in the neighbouring lifeguard stations being informed thus reducing the search area. Another thing to remember is that a child isn’t lost until they know they are lost. They can be quite happy playing with another child unaware of the search around them. Also remember to maintain contact with the lifeguards. It is not unusual for lifeguard to locate the child before he/she is reported missing. Losing a child is very stressful. Please remember the advice above and the stress will hopefully be short lived.

TUCKTONIA: 8 - THE ‘GRAND MET’ YEARS Written by Alexander McKinstry
A useful marker, when gauging where the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park used to be, is the line-up of flats in Fairway Drive, which appear in the background of most surviving postcards of the site. These were built on a former strip of Corporation land, still zoned for allotments when Harry Stiller, the leisure park’s founder, snapped it up in 1959. Under a deed of variation, however, dated 28 May 1968, Christchurch Council assented to sixty flats being built along this stretch, in five blocks – the work being carried out by Fairway Construction, of which Harry’s father was a director. Unfortunately these flats were to cause numerous headaches for Harry and his successors in the years that followed.
The main problem was the Fairway Drive Residents’ Association, ‘a group of people,’ says Harry today, ‘whom I could never understand – they chose to move into flats overlooking a fun park, then did nothing but complain about the noise.’ An early focus of their complaints was the 35-ft. giant slide, or ‘Astraglide’, which Harry introduced to the leisure park in 1972. The residents continually complained about the noise from families using the slide; three years later, when the new owners, Grand Metropolitan, repositioned the slide to reduce noise levels, the residents put in a fresh complaint, saying it was now spoiling their view of the river. These gripes and disgruntlements never really went away; a later director of the site, Peter Arnold, told me the only fun he ever had with the residents’ association was when one of their representatives stormed out of his office in a fury,
then got stuck in the revolving door. Grand Met ran the leisure park for eight years, and it has been claimed that, certainly towards the end of their proprietorship, they tended to underinvest in the site. This had not always been so; when the Astraglide became unusable, for instance, due to fibreglass protruding through the surface, they replaced it with a six-lane, Disneyfied version (which ended up at the Rotunda Amusement Park in Folkestone). The company also continued to add new models to Tucktonia, the site’s world-famous miniature landscape, touting it – correctly – as the largest in the world, with 200 models spread out over four acres. The photos here show a 26-ft. replica of the Post Office Tower being lowered into place on 9 May 1978. The site had become so packed by that point that it had to be winched into position, a Lynx helicopter from AAC Middle Wallop doing the honours. That particular model had cost £7,000 to make and was fitted, like its life-size counterpart, with a rotating ‘restaurant’ section, turning through eight revolutions per hour. A model of the NatWest Tower was duly added, when work on the real-life City of London structure was completed in 1980. Grand Met eventually despaired of the site for three reasons: the high cost of maintaining the Tucktonia models; limited room for expansion; and a shift in the perspective of the company, which tended to focus more on its pubs and hotels as the 1980s wore on. This last point was confirmed by Bob Hazell, the site’s latest managing director, when Grand Met put the site up for sale in 1983. The park was ‘a one-off’, he told the public; it ‘does not fit in with our current operations’. Later, it emerged that Grand Met had been looking to sell the site to developers. My name’s Ellie Brown and I’m taking over the Teen Eye from Emily now that she’s moving onto a new stage in her life.

I’m 16 and I just finished my GCSEs at BSG and will be starting my A Levels at Brockenhurst College this September. I’m really looking forward to sharing my experiences as a teenager living in Southbourne with the Southbourne Eye readers. It’s almost half way through the longest summer break I’ve ever had. Time really seems to fly by during the summer with everyone travelling all over the place and enjoying the (hopefully) warmer weather. We are so lucky to live so close to the sea. Definitely one of my favourite parts of last month was the Shake & Stir festival. This event was right up my street, being a great lover of vintage myself, so I was really eager to take a look at what they had going on. The music was amazing and the stalls were super cute. The fudge I had there was some of the best I’d had in a long time! It was fantastic to see such amazing local talent. If you didn’t get time to go this year I’d definitely recommend a visit next year. I really can’t wait for the Air Festival at the end of this month. The festival always brings so many tourists and makes the town buzz with energy. Last year we had a mixed bag of weather for the event, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for sunshine! I’m particularly excited to see how some of the local business’ get involved with the event. I love to see how inventive many of the Southbourne shops are with their window displays.
Spicy Beef Burger
INGREDIENTS
450g/16oz lean beef mince 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp tomato ketchup 1 tsp mustard 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1 small onion, finely diced 2 spring onions, sliced handful basil leaves, chopped olive oil for frying
METHOD In a large bowl mix together the mince, garlic, tomato ketchup, mustard, egg, chilli and onion. Dive in with your hands and mix until the ingredients are well blended. Just before cooking, add the spring onions and basil to the mixture and divide into four patties. Heat a little olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the burgers. Turn them once only, cooking for about 5-6 minutes each side. (Alternatively you can cook them under a grill for the same time turning half way through.) Serve with burger buns and salad.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? FUNKY FOLIAGE
We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own.
Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer.
It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant.
Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of superslugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade.
I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning limegreen foliage unfold each spring.
A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety... just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February.
Finally, if you have the space, for real in-yourface foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage.
