A Message of Hope for Turbulent Times Dear Friends, In 1969, as Swami Vishnudevananda sat in deep meditation in front of the altar at the Yoga Retreat temple, he experienced a powerful vision. In his vision, the whole planet Earth was engulfed in fire forcing everyone to run. As people tried to escape, they broke loose of their barriers: physical barriers, mental barriers, spiritual barriers, gender barriers, religious barriers, and racial barriers. All those barriers that we artificially restrict ourselves with suddenly became meaningless in the presence of that fire. Swamiji awoke from this vision trembling for he thought that a great calamity was imminent. Then he had a sudden insight. Swamiji realized that by transcending their barriers in order to escape this fire, humanity had actually become united. He saw our world progressing to a greater and brighter future even though the vision itself was terrifying. I believe that Swamiji’s vision is now upon us. The fire that he visualized is here and now and it is spreading. People are bewildered and do not know what to do; they are seeking answers and need help. Much of humanity is in need of shelter, food, and water. All of us want health and healing. But the ultimate quality that we really need at such a turbulent time is spiritual shelter and inner strength. If there is inner spiritual strength, then there is the possibility of overcoming this critical point in the life of humanity successfully. All of this turmoil in the world today is due to transformation. We are going through a time of transformation that will lead us toward a bright and wonderful future. Yet this transition period, just like any other transition, is by its very nature, chaotic. If we resist this transformation, we will suffer. If we understand it for what it truly is and choose the right path, then humanity will have a hopeful future. As yoga practitioners, we are key and essential partners in this transformation. We can and should participate. First, we can keep our true Self connected to the seed of inner peace within us by our daily practice. Then in our own humble way, we can offer this yogic knowledge to others. It will give people strength, hope and a clearer vision. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika describes Hatha Yoga as a “sheltering monastery”, saving humanity from the fires of suffering. Swamiji himself would say that each one of us, not only yoga teachers, must become that monastery where people can find refuge from the scorching fires of fear and confusion. We can all share the wisdom of yoga with others. This is our duty. We must help each other and in doing so, we unite in this transition toward a bright new human life. I invite you to join us this year at the ashram, to reconnect with your inner spiritual strength and to become a spiritual shelter for others upon your return. Om Shanti, Om Peace Swami Swaroopananda Director
