EncouragingVocations Through DiscernmentWeekend weekend with an opening Mass and dinner on Friday evening. In his homily, Loverde told students, “You are here to listen attentively to the Lord-to listen to what God wants you to do.” Quoting John Paul the Great, Loverde said that God gave us individual life projects and that there are particular lives that God is calling the students to.

Christendom College hosted a newly revised Discernment Weekend for students on 23-25 February. Students gathered in record numbers with priests and religious from across the country for a time of discussion and prayerful reflection. Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde launched the

“Whatever the particular vocation that God is inviting you to,” he continued, “love is at its center—love of God and others… Dear young people discerning, I do not know the life project—the vocation—that God is calling you to, but whatever it is, He desires you to reveal His love to others. My prayer is that you follow his guiding light. Dare to love,” he concluded. Founder of Priests for Life Rev. Frank Pavone gave the opening address on Saturday morning entitled “Master Where Do You Stay?” Dealing With Uncertainty in Discernment. “If you get close to God, you are going to want to run away. We have to understand this dynamic if we’re going to understand discernment. Somebody feels the initial call, the attractiveness of a vocation…then they start to walk toward this and then they suddenly feel I am not worthy,” Pavone said.

Student Brittany Scheidler speaks with one of the religious sisters who visited during Discernment Weekend.

“Brothers and sisters, we have to feel I am not worthy, but that does not mean I am not called,” he continued, “Any journey of discernment is going to have that tension in it… What this tension means is that I am called to be purified and to accept something of

which I will never be worthy… No matter the vocation, every human being is called to life-giving selfsacrificing love. “Whatever our vocation is, it is always shaped by the needs of the Church and society at a particular point Fr. Frank Pavone and time,” Pavone continued. “Brothers and sisters, in our time we live amongst a culture of death, no matter what particular vocation we have, if it is a vocation in the United States of America in the year 2007, it must be marked by a particularly strong commitment to defend the sacred dignity of every human life.” The day continued with Exposition and Adoration of the Eucharist with opportunities for Confession. Lunch followed and students were given the opportunity to socialize with the many priests and religious, many of whom where Christendom Alumni themselves. The afternoon featured a series of Breakout Sessions on a variety of vocations topics including: Marriage as a Vocation, The Diocesan Priesthood, How to Foster Priestly Vocations in Your Family, Discerning Your Vocation While Still Single, The Consecrated Religious Sister, and many others.

College Announces the Creation of the Annual Fund and President’s Council

A

As the College approaches its 30th Anniversary celebrating service to Catholic higher education, Christendom announces the creation of the Annual Fund and introduces the new President’s Council Donor Recognition Society. Since its founding in 1977, Christendom has had to raise funds each year for the purposes of sustaining the operational needs of the College – just as most other private institutions of higher learning have had to do. And each year, by the grace of God and through the generosity of the College’s many benefactors, Christendom has been able to raise the necessary funds to keep the College both on budget and in the black. In an effort to help with the fund raising efforts of the College, the Annual Fund has been created. The concept of the Annual Fund is not a new one. In

fact, most colleges and universities have one and are sustained by the monies donated to it. Although Christendom has been raising money each year since its founding, the Development Office believes that it is now time to establish a different way of thinking about donations. Currently, donations to the College come in daily; some large amounts, others a mere $25, but all absolutely necessary. In fact, it is somewhat difficult to determine when donations will be sent in, and as a result, it makes the budgeting process a little more tedious than it has to be. With the Annual Fund, though, friends and benefactors of the College can make an annual pledge early in the fiscal year (which begins June 1) and make pledge see ANNUAL FUND, page 7

INSTAURARE, April 2007

As We Approach Christendom’s 30th Anniversary

With the start of this spring semester in the year 2007, we are beginning to move towards the celebration of the College’s 30th Anniversary next fall. I do believe this would be a good time to share a number of thoughts with all the members of our college community. I think that sometimes we often forget that we are involved in a great war. As Pope John Paul the Great wrote in Evangelium Vitae: “This situation, with its lights and shadows ought to make us all fully aware that we are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the culture of death and the culture of life. We find ourselves not only faced with but necessarily in the midst of this conflict: we are all involved and Timothy T. O’Donnell, STD, KGCHS we all share in it.” (EV, 28.) I am ever more convinced that the only thing that can truly save sound reason is our Roman Catholic faith. For it is in our faith, with its great rivers of grace flowing from the open Heart of Christ into our world through the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Penance that we can receive the Church’s oils of healing and grace. Pope Benedict XVI, echoing John Paul the Great, took the occasion in early December to stress once again the importance of Sunday Mass for the Christian community in order that the faithful would come together in worship. The reclaiming of Sunday is seen as a sine qua non in our culture war. In a recent address, the Holy Father said that participation in Sunday “was the natural way for the early Christians to express one’s belonging to Christ, his communion with His Mystical Body, in the joyful hope of His glorious return.” The Pontiff continued: “this was manifested in a heroic way in the case of the martyrs of Abitene who faced death exclaiming “Sine dominico non possumus,” that is, we cannot live without gathering on Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist.” The Holy Father concluded his remarks by saying, “Today it is necessary to emphasize the sacredness of the Lord’s Day as the cultural context in which we live is often characterized by religious indifference and secularism obfuscates the horizon of the transcendent. May the Lord’s Day, which can also be called the Lord of the days, regain all its importance and be perceived and lived fully in the celebration of the Eucharist.” (Pope Benedict XVI, December 4, 2006.) I want to exhort all of you to take advantage of the gift of Sunday throughout this semester. Do not take it for granted and do all that you can to help make it truly the Dies Domine: the Day of the Lord. Additionally, as we continue through this semester, let us appreciate the fact that, here at Christendom, we are so blessed to have such a wonderful group of faculty mentors. I ask you students, just for a moment, to think of last semester alone – the courses that were taught and the subjects that you learned. As you recall these things, may you recognize and come to see in yourself the great growth in knowledge and wisdom which you have achieved under their mentorship. We must always be grateful to our donors and benefactors and all those who contribute to make this education possible and have enabled us over the years to build together such a wonderful faculty to assist you in your pursuit of this arduous good, which we call a liberal education. This is a good that in many quarters of our modern world is rejected as irrelevant and unnecessary.

Let us recall the six major points of the Christendom College Vision, around which we rally: First of all, we as a College possess an institutional commitment on the part of the faculty and administration to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church in our spiritual, moral, and intellectual life. This also includes a special bond of love and loyalty for the person of our Holy Father. This special love and loyalty is a precious gift that was bequeathed to us by our beloved founder, Dr. Warren Carroll. Secondly, a deep commitment to undergraduate liberal education devoted to the discovery and appropriation of the true, the good and the beautiful for their own sakes in contradistinction to career, technical or vocational training. Career, technical or vocational training may be good, but are not part of the calling of our vocation here at Christendom. How blessed we truly are that we, as a community of faculty and students, can spend time pursuing these noble things. Our third point is the Core. The Core Curriculum is part of the air we breathe here. We have at Christendom a commitment to a strong undergraduate core curriculum in which Catholic theology and Thomistic philosophy hold a central place along with history, literature, language – with a special emphasis upon classical language – political philosophy and math and science. Yes, all of these disciplines are not equal and Catholic theology and Thomistic philosophy here exercise a sapiential role for the whole curriculum so that all of the disciplines are informed and illuminated by Catholic truth. This is why our core program in theology and philosophy extends for three full years. Our fourth point is the development and maintenance of a Catholic spiritual life, including daily sacramental practice, a sound moral climate and abundant opportunities for liturgical and personal prayer. Here it is important to remember how we must encourage one another to attend daily Mass whenever possible. It

could never be easier than it is here at Christendom. Whenever possible, we should exhort one another to the frequent reception of Holy Communion, the praying of rosaries together, the recitation of the Divine Office, daily Eucharistic Adoration, and holy hours. He is always there waiting for us at the center of our campus, beckoning and longing to help all of us. Let us take advantage of His presence among us and seek to honor Him! Our fifth point is the development and maintenance of a Catholic social and cultural life including parietal discipline conducive to good manners and morals. This also includes a high liturgical culture in which musica sacra plays a prominent role and a wide range of collegiate activities involving the fine arts. Here again, we are striving to integrate what we learn by living the life of grace through practicing courtesy toward one another and living a good moral life. These are absolutely essential. In a special way, I make an appeal to the young men here. So many of you are good and have so much potential. I encourage you to help one another in your effort to use the old Latin expression: “Esto vir.” That is: “ Be a man.” Our world today and the College is in sore need of strong men. Let us recall that many of your age at this very moment are facing death daily serving our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our sixth and final point is that we have a commitment to a humane scale in the academic community in which every faculty member and student may be personally known to one another. Here we have been given the great opportunity to build bonds of friendship and mutual respect. This is what we stand for – this is what each one of us is called to serve here at the College. We need each of you to embrace this vocation as a faculty mentor or as a student dedicated to the pursuit and acquisition of wisdom. Our Lord needs you, the Church needs you, and our troubled nation and world need you. Dr. O’Donnell delivered this talk to the College community at the beginning of the semester.

A Few Thoughts on the New Annual Fund

Dear Friends:

Each year, I work with members of our Development Office to help raise the necessary funds in order to keep Christendom College financially afloat. And this is no easy task. But with the help of thousands of generous individuals, Christendom has been able to continue to provide a top-notch Catholic liberal arts education to the youth of today. While I am still humbled by the faithfulness and generosity of Christendom College benefactors, I have long sought greater flexibility and new ways by which I might express my special gratitude to those who have made unrestricted gifts for so many years. After a period of strategic discussion, I have approved the establishment of an Annual Fund at Christendom. I believe firmly that a new Annual Giving program in support of this new Annual Fund will accomplish my “gratitude goal” and other important stewardship objectives. This annual giving program seeks unrestricted donations or pledges on an annual basis which I may earmark for the College’s greatest needs. Let me emphasize that each gift to Christendom’s Annual Fund – no matter how large or small – is a gift that impacts the College far in excess of its dollar value. Tuition revenue provides a substantial portion of the cost of educating each Christendom student, but not all the cost! Since annual giving allows me to direct funds to where they are most urgently

needed, whether it be mowing the Chapel lawn or funding a student financial aid grant, I view your support of the Annual Fund as critical to the success of Christendom College. Gifts to the Annual Fund directly impact students each and every day. As an important feature of the Annual Fund program, I look forward to launching the new President’s Council, which recognizes in special ways throughout each year Christendom benefactors who have gifted at least $1,000 to the Annual Fund. To help give the program a “kick start,” I will welcome qualified benefactors as charter members of this new society, entitled to all its benefits. Furthermore, I am particularly pleased to announce that, beginning with this current fiscal year, each Annual Fund benefactor who has contributed $2,500 or more will receive a personal invitation to the Annual President’s Council Appreciation Dinner to be held in conjunction with the annual Summer Institute this coming July 21. For these reasons, I have given my enthusiastic approval to this ground-breaking Annual Fund program confident that you will be as generous to Christendom students and to Christendom faculty as you have been in the past. Please watch for Annual Giving correspondence and for more information on new recognition societies at Christendom in the coming months.

Dr. Warren Carroll Brings History to Life During Lecture Series

D

During the Spring semester, the Christendom community had the pleasure of hearing a number of lectures delivered by Christendom’s Founding President Dr. Warren H. Carroll. The first was entitled, “The American War for Independence: Not a Revolution,” and during the second he spoke on “The Protestant Revolt, Not a Reformation.”

whereof I speak; I specialized in the American War for Independence in graduate school and wrote my PhD dissertation on John Adams.”

During the first lecture held on January 29, Carroll

“Though most Protestants today do not know it, the destruction of the Catholic Church was the declared objective of the first Protestants,” Carroll said at the beginning of his lecture. “They were rebels, not reformers.”

focused on the fact that the so-called “American Revolution” was really the American War for Independence, and should always be referred to as such. “Revolutions cause chaos, terror, and destroy all previous order – the American War for Independence did not do this. Though it did destroy the monarchy, it saved all the rest. It was nothing like the French Revolution and it should never be compared to it,” Carroll said. “It is only in recent years that most Americans have come to regard the French Revolution as a twin to their own war for independence. This is due solely to the use of the incorrect word ‘revolution’ to describe what we did, not to any historical resemblances between the two great events. I know

Carroll’s next lecture followed on February 26 where he elucidated the truth about Protestantism and, most especially, Martin Luther.

Carroll cited many of Luther’s own pamphlets, statements, and correspondences as proof of Luther’s early defiance of Church authority and his revolutionary temper. “In a letter to his former professor, Luther revealed his revolutionary purpose as early as May 1518 when he wrote, ‘My firm belief is that the reform is impossible unless the ecclesiastical laws, the papal regulations, scholastic theology, philosophy and logic as they presently exist are thoroughly uprooted…a resolution from which neither your authority, though it is certainly of the greatest weight for me, nor that of any others, can turn me aside,’” Carroll said. “One essential fact about that struggle must always be remembered,” Carroll continued. “Wherever and whenever Protestants were in power, they always abolished the Mass, outlawing it. The Protestants, who presented themselves as defenders of religious liberty, never permitted religious liberty to Catholics. Luther began this when he stopped the saying of the Mass in Wittenberg… He condemned the Mass, with his usual violence of language, as ‘blasphemy, madness, and a lie’ which was ‘worse than unchastity, murder,

ANNUAL FUND... payments throughout the remainder of the year. As a result, Christendom will have a better understanding of how much money donors plan to give, and most importantly, when they plan to give it, thus helping the College to accomplish its mission in a much more efficient manner. On a side note, Christendom’s donor pool is an extraordinary one. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, “The 2006-07 Almanac,” the majority of funds raised at colleges and universities across the nation come from corporations, foundations, and other organizations, including the government (52%); and as one might expect, alumni comprise the next largest groupofbenefactors (28%); and various individuals make up the remaining 20% of funds raised. At Christendom, due to the lack of size of its alumni base, only 4% of funds come from alumni (although approximately 40% of the alumni do donate to Christendom each year). Corporations, foundations, and other organizations are not as prone to donate to Christendom due to its small size so only 11% of Christendom’s funds come from these sources (and, of course, Christendom does not accept any federal funds). And finally, an overwhelming 85% of Christendom’s funds raised each year come from

and robbery.’” Carroll cited Luther’s final pamphlet, which spoke of the Pope and Cardinals: “Let them hold a council on the gallows or in Hell with all the demons, so that thunder and lightening would strike them, Hell-fire burn them, the plague, syphilis, epilepsy, scurvy, leprosy, carbuncles and all manner of disease attack them. Whenever I say ‘Hallowed be Thy Name’ I am forced to add ‘Cursed, damned, dishonored be the name of the Pope.’ “Once again, are these the words of a reformer who loves the Church of Christ and wants to purify it and make it better?” Carroll concluded.

30th Anniversary News

Christendom will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary Year beginning on September 13, 2007. As part of the celebrations, the College will hold a Gala Dinner Dance at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Tysons Corner, VA, on April 19, 2008. Francis Cardinal Arinze and Joaquin Navarro-Valls will serve as joint Chairmen of the 30th Anniversary Honorary Dinner Committee and will both be in attendance at the Gala Dinner Dance. Those interested in attending are advised to mark the date on their calendars. More information will be forthcoming in the months ahead. Additionally, the College is making plans to celebrate this landmark year with a variety of other events and celebrations, including a pilgrimage to Triangle, VA, where the College campus was first located prior to moving to its Front Royal campus in 1979, and a series of lectures by its founding faculty members. continued from page 1

various individual donors. “It is a little odd,” says Vice President for Advancement John Ciskanik, “that we rely more on individual donors to make our mission happen, rather than on our alumni or big businesses. But that’s what makes our Christendom Family so special. Most people are used to giving money back to their Alma Mater so the concept of giving money to a school that you didn’t go to is a little foreign to some people. But obviously there are many out there who are unhappy with what their Alma Mater is doing or the direction it is going so they feel that Christendom is a better investment for their charitable giving.” Naturally, as part of the new Annual Fund, the College has created the President’s Council Donor Recognition Society. The primary purpose of the President’s Council is to better recognize those donors who provide vital support by contributing $1,000 or more to Christendom during a fiscal year. In appreciation of their tremendous loyalty, members of the President’s Council will receive special access to various College programs and events, a subscription to the new President’s Council Newsletter, and appropriate listing in the Annual Report. In addition, benefactors who pledge or make gifts of

$2,500 or more are invited to the festive President’s Council appreciation dinner, which will be held in conjunction with the annual Summer Institute in July. The dinner, which has been held in the St. John the Evangelist library in the past, will serve as a means for College President Dr. Timothy O’Donnell and the members of the Development Office to personally extend to benefactors their appreciation for their generosity. Additionally, guests will have the opportunity to mingle with the esteemed guest speakers of the Summer Institute which, this year, will include Fr. Benedict Groeschel, former US Senator Rick Santorum, and others. The College will begin inviting members to join the President’s Council Donor Recognition Society and to contribute to the Annual Fund in the near future. Continued from Page 1 INSTAURARE

College Gearing Up For Exciting Summer Programs

C

Christendom College hosts a number of popular summer programs for Catholics of all ages every year. The bucolic riverside campus with its comfortable accommodations and modern but pleasing facilities provides a perfect milieu for the study, prayer, and recreation essential to Christian academic community life. These, combined with the quality of the students and the nobility of their pursuit, draw eminent public figures and teachers of the faithful to the campus. This year’s programs and the roster of speakers, teachers, and honorees are impressive.

The program’s content – there are concentrations in moral theology, systematic theology, and catechetics – and flexibility attract many actual or aspiring Directors of Religious Education, catechists, Catholic school teachers, and religious to the Shenandoah Valley every summer. Additionally, the Institute on Religious Life’s Vita Consecrata Institute (VCI) will be having its summer program in two sessions, the first from

They will be immersed in a Catholic atmosphere where fun, friendship, culture, and academics are seamlessly inter-woven, and they will emerge having reaped enormous benefits from the experience. Activities will include classes, daily Mass, Rosary, and Benediction; white water rafting trips in West Virginia; hikes in the Blue Ridge Mountains, day-trips

The campus will get a little more active at the end of June and into July as the annual High School Summer Program’s two sessions get underway.
