AUGUST
Christendom unveiled the new Crusader Fields scoreboard, to be used for home soccer and rugby games.
The college launched its new "Dare to be Great" campaign during orientation weekend, giving every student a free t-shirt to celebate the launch — a first for the college.
Biggest. Class. Ever. Christendom welcomed the Class of 2019 to campus on August 19, featuring 149 freshmen.
SEPTEMBER
6
The new Madonna Hall Faculty Office Building was dedicated on September 8. The new building features 9 new offices, a faculty lounge, and gorgeous views of the Shenandoah River.
Five visiting lecturers joined the faculty for the 2015-16 academic year, including, from left to right, Daniel Garland (Theology), Dr. Kevin Tracy (Classics), Dr. Miriam Byers (Mathematics), Dr. Brian Fox (Political Science) and Dr. Matthew Tsakanikas (Theology).
The new Admissions Office Suite was opened, featuring four spacious new offices on the back of Regina Coeli Hall. The new offices give visitors a new, more central location to meet the admissions team, along with offering great views of the Shenandoah River.
From left to right, the college welcomed alumnus Patrick Quest ('08) as the new athletic director, alumnus Joseph Walsh ('15) as the new men's residence director, and alumna Kelsey Gordon ('15) as the college's first assistant director of student activities.
The new men's and women's Cross-Country teams ran in their first meet in September, giving the new athletic program a real running start.
Beloved professor Mike Brown began a new inititive for students: the "Quodlibet," a chance for students to ask questions of a faculty panel in a casual setting.
7
NOVEMBER
Pope Francis made his historic visit to America, and Christendom was able to witness it for themselves — students saw the Pope in Philadelphia.
FEBRUARY Mr. Brown brought another new initiative to students in the spring: faculty-student luncheons, where students could discuss readings with their professors while feasting on a catered lunch.
Christendom. Defeats. Duke. Those three words signalled a special year for the rugby program, which ultimately won 20 games. Christendom purchased 80 acres of new land in the spring next to Campion Field, to be used for future building projects.
8
JANUARY
The 10,000 Acts of Kindness Campaign impacted lives across America and beyond throughout the academic year, drawing the attention of news crews while in Philadelphia in November.
Christendom unveiled its new website to begin 2016, providing students with a cleaner, more impressive, and mobile-friendly means of keeping up with college happenings.
"Snowmageddon" was not an exaggeration — for the first time in school history, Christendom was shut down due to massive snowfall in January.
Alumnus Sean LaRochelle ('14) was hired as the new assistant director of operations.
MAY
MARCH The newly renovated first floor of the Student Center was unveiled to students.
Constuction continued on the new St. Clare's Residence Hall, which will bring 90 new beds to campus by 2017.

ORIENTATION WEEKEND
The annual SAC vs. RA dodgeball game happened on Saturday, with SAC victorious once again.
Two freshmen volunteered for one of the many skits performed during the Orientation Social on Monday night. " My classmates are diverse and passionate and I can already tell that this is just the beginning of four incredible years amongst inspiring and dedicated peers. I am proud to be part of such a promising class."

Laudamus Te Fridays
Former Christendom chaplain Fr. Donald Planty returned to campus to give one of this year's talks at Laudamus Te.
"This is a true, community event that brings out over 200 people every time it’s held. We come together, we worship, and then we have a social event afterwards to really keep the spirit going. Having something so spiritual, so communal on campus is important, and really brings focus back to why we’re all here — to restore all things in Christ.” Caitlin Bowers Director of Student Activities

"We have become a part of the history of the most important city in the world. It’s been a wonderful semester, all that I expected and more, and I’m so blessed to have chosen this college and attended its Rome program. Someday, hopefully, I’ll visit Italy again, and the knowledge I’ve gained this semester will be useful, but even if not, the knowledge of faith, reason, beauty, and other cultures is part of living a well-rounded life, no matter what country you’re in." “There are three ways to do Les Miserables: the first way is to whitewash it, making it feel superficial and weakening the impact. The second way is to plunge into the grittiness, which is artistically lazy and unnecessary, and also weakens the positive effect. We chose the third way, the middle ground. We’re accepting the fallenness of man so that we can show the redemption and the mercy. There really isn’t a more perfect play for the ‘Year of Mercy,’ because this one shows man’s fallenness, but also his potential to be redeemed.” Kieran O'Donnell, Co-Director

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT S
Sean Salmon
enior Sean Salmon played Gaelic Football for many years before taking up soccer when he came to Christendom. He chose to participate in Christendom's athletic program as a means of remaining competitive while attending a college with a vibrant faith. Describing the impact Christendom athletics has had on him, he said, "many of the friends I made during the first week of soccer camp have been my best friends all throughout college. Each member may have different likes and interests, but on the field we are the same. We are Crusaders and brothers. It was through the athletic program that I was able to change my focus on the purpose of sports; that it is to give glory to God. I believe the athletic program forces one to develop in character and also grow as an individual."

Madeline Hill
oalkeeper Madeline Hill started playing soccer at a very young age. The starting goalkeeper for 3 years in high school, she knew she wanted to continue playing. However, "I didn't want to have to completely sacrifice my academics or involvement around campus in order to play." Christendom fit the bill. "I have learned about perseverance, how to work in a group, how to fail without losing perspective, how to succeed with humility; I have learned what hard work really entails, and that in the end, it is always to God's name that we give all the glory."
The Lady Crusaders ranked as high as #8 in the USCAA Coaches' Poll during the season.

aptain of the volleyball team, Bridget McMahon is a C role model both on and off the team. Encouraged to begin playing volleyball as a freshman at Christendom, she
excelled at the sport, eventually becoming team captain. “The friendships that I’ve gotten from playing with the girls, especially on the volleyball team these past two years — getting to know the girls that I wouldn’t normally interact with in classes and other activities — has been incredible.” At Christendom, Bridget believes “learning to work with different personalities and people in order to achieve a goal” is crucial to working as a team.
Bridget McMahon was honored for her athletic achievements during Senior Night.
The Lady Crusaders earned the #8 power ranking in the USCAA.
MEN'S BASKETBALL

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT S
Jacob Wagner
enior Jake Wagner didn’t always play basketball. Until age 11, his sport was baseball. He took up basketball in 5th grade, and never looked back. Continuing to play at Christendom was a no-brainer. In describing what he enjoys about Christendom basketball, he said “I really enjoy the team atmosphere. I will always have fond memories of the basketball road trips and team events that I have participated in during my time at Christendom.” As a student-athlete, Jake holds himself to a high standard: “It is sometimes difficult to juggle studies and sports. Having to manage my time to try and fulfill my duties to my studies and to the basketball team has helped me learn discipline, and I hope I can carry this discipline into my life after college.”

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT A
Elizabeth Ford
nyone who has seen Elizabeth Ford play basketball knows that she has a great love and passion for the game. A junior from Costa Mesa, Ca., Elizabeth has been a starting forward on Christendom’s women’s basketball team for the past 3 years. She started basketball at 16 years old, and had no prior experience. When asked, she remarked that she had not had any knowledge of the game or its rules. Therefore when she started playing in high school she had to turn all her efforts to basketball, and said that she began to “eat, sleep, and breathe basketball." At Christendom, Elizabeth continues to do just this. This season she accepted the position of team captain due to her hard work and dedication to the team. Whether she is in a game, at practice, or practicing on her own (something that she takes the time to do often), she is working hard to improve. This work pays off, as she now puts up an average of 13 points a game, along with many assists and defensive stops.
MEN'S RUGBY
The Crusaders held onto the Shield for the second year in a row, defeating Franciscan University of Steubenville at home 54-31.
FORGING A LEGACY
The Crusaders stunned Duke University on their home turf, upsetting them 31-10.

S
Robert McKay
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
enior Robert McKay has been playing rugby since he was 7 years old, "as most children do in England," with the only break being his year between graduating high school and coming to Christendom. Continuing to play at Christendom, though, he found the atmosphere much different than in high school: "In high shcool, we played rugby and then we went and had a drink and that was about the end of it. At Christendom, however, we have this sense of extending our team beyond the field. We also commit to going to Mass together, going to lunch together, and even studying together." For Rob, rugby is a release from the pressures of everyday life as a student, and an opportunity to pass on his love of the game to the next generation of Crusaders.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT A
Anne Adams
nne Adams has the game of baseball in her blood. Her father managed his own men's league team, inspiring her to join a softball team with her sisters throughout her high-school years. Once she got to Christendom, she did not expect to play softball at the collegiate level, until the softball program was reintroduced her junior year. Adams felt that, by participating in the athletic program, she was able to "share my passion for the game in my senior year here. In a way, it was like I could finally communicate something essential about myself to all the wonderful friends and to the larger community I have grown with over the course of my four years." She believes that, being a student-athete is "pretty boss to be honest. When a nice balance is achieved between the two pursuits, we have this chance to become wellrounded and excellent in all respects of our life."
Professor Mike Brown led the Lady Crusaders as head coach in their second season.

"
“I know how grateful all of you are to your families and to the faculty and staff of our college, for helping you reach this academic milestone. It’s a privilege to come to Christendom, known throughout our country and beyond for its fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church, the quality of the education offered here, and the caliber and commitment of its students and alumni.” - Edwin Cardinal O'Brien “When I was in graduate school, several of us got together with the idea: maybe we could start a lay Catholic college. Why? Because, if there was going to be any hope for a liberal Catholic institution, it would have to come from the laity. While our idea never got off the ground, whoever would have guessed that a wave of neo-Catholic colleges run by laymen would appear later, and that they would be the ones preserving the authenticity of the Faith, often against the infidelity of some of the clerically-run institutions? We are celebrating, here at Christendom, a very triumphant event." - Dr. James Hitchcock “When we leave this room, the life to which we go will probably be full of these seemingly trivial patterns, at which we might laugh in mockery or slip into a disenchanted ennui. But we must never forget, especially in discouragement or frustration, that the small is the expression and the agent of the greater. We must remember to laugh, not in contempt, but in joy because these small things, by a marvelous decree of God’s goodness, are the means through which He brings us to salvation,” - Sarah Greydanus, Salutatorian “As we conclude our journey together, in this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us also remember how we began our formation on this campus, in the Year of Faith. While this convergence might seem like a happy coincidence, it enables us to see our time at Christendom as a pilgrimage, bookended by these two virtues." - Amy Marter, Valedictorian “You have become and you are, in fact, bearers of light. That was key to Dr. Carroll’s mission and our common vision in the founding of this college, in our call to ‘restore all things in Christ.’ My charge to you today, in this extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy: be bearers of light. Do this, and you too will change lives, you will change hearts and yes, you will change the world." - Dr. Timothy O'Donnell

Emily Farabaugh
We want to thank one of our staff members that went above and beyond what was asked of her. Emily did more than her fair share of pages that was expected of her as a regular staff member, and this year's yearbook would not be the same without Emily's contribution and experience with Adobe InDesign.
From the Editor's Desk The book you're holding in your hands right now is a true labor of love, with hours of time poured into it by countless, extremely dedicated students. That's right — students. Not only did they dedicate hours to classwork, athletics, and other social activities, they sacrified their time to make this book a reality, making it nothing short of a triumph in my eyes. Their chronicle of the 39th academic year of Christendom College reveals the magnitude of such a year in the eyes of all who know and love Christendom. In terms of the campus itself, it saw many big changes, from the construction of the Madonna Hall faculty office building, to the new Admissions Office Suite, to the beginning of construction on St. Clare's Hall. On the stage, students thrilled and moved us with Father of the Bride and Les Miserables. On the field, they wowed us, particularly with the stunning 20-victory season accomplished by the rugby team. In the classroom, students displayed an intelligence and enthusiasum that was nothing short of awe-inspiring, giving us all hope for the future. On top of that, the college welcomed its largest freshmen class ever to the campus. Many big, new events at Christendom defined the year, but also an incredible continuity — a continuity that reaches back to the original vision of our founder, Dr. Warren Carroll. I want to give a word of thanks to all who were involved on this project, without whom this book would not exist. Ultimately, this is a love letter to Christendom College, written by dozens of people who were changed for the better by this place, all because they simply dared for something more from their lives. Because of them, the dream of Christendom, "instaurare omnia in Christo," will continue on for years to come.

the blue mantle:
THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME
Christendom College was founded under the patronage of Our Lady of Fatima in 1977, who has helped the college grow and flourish in the nearly forty years since. When the Christendom College yearbook was first established in the 1980s, it took on the name "Blue Mantle" in honor of Our Lady. The yearbook would retain that name for a number of years, before the name changed simply to the "Christendom College Yearbook" later — a title that would stick through the 2012-13 academic year. For the yearbook's triumphant return in 2015-16, it was a no-brainer for the staff to bring the original name back as well, both as a tribute to the college's first yearbook staff and to the college's patroness as well.
The "Blue Mantle," in its 1987 edition.
