WELCO ME "We are living in an information-driven society which bombards us indiscriminately with data−all treated as being of equal importance−and which leads to remarkable superficiality in the area of moral discernment. In response, we need to provide an education, which teaches critical thinking and encourages the development of mature moral values." - Pope Francis

Dear Friends,

Christ our Lord came to earth not to make life easy, but to make men great by offering us life in its fullness. Our goal here at Christendom is to help you become the person God made you to be. Our outstanding education, which brings together the truths of faith and reason, will give you the foundation to become a leader in whatever field you enter and to make a deep impact on society as a courageous Catholic leader, of which our troubled world and Church are in such dire need. Our curriculum is the same education that trained the great men and women of Christendom for the past 2000 years. It will strengthen your intellect, empower your will, and expand your heart, enabling you to become a leader in your chosen vocation. If you wish to answer the call and the challenge to “dare to be great,” then I urge you to join us in our common educational mission and seek to restore all things in Christ.

Dare to join us.

Dr. Timothy T. O’Donnell has taught at Christendom College since 1985 and has served as its president since 1992. A renowned author and speaker, Dr. O’Donnell holds a doctoral degree in Ascetical and Mystical Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome. Besides serving as president, Dr. O’Donnell teaches courses in history and theology and enjoys spending time with students on campus. He teaches courses during the summer to students visiting during the Experience Christendom Summer Program; he directs our three-week summer program in Ireland; and he takes time to visit with the students studying in Rome each semester — a remarkable range of involvement for a college president. Dr. O’Donnell also serves on the Pontifical Council for the Family. He was appointed by Pope St. John Paul II to serve as a consultor, an appointment renewed both by Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

DREAM BIG

CAREER & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Mediocrity is not your friend. Half-hearted is no-hearted. “Cannot” is not in your vocabulary and 100% is what you always give. You expect much of others and demand even more of yourself. You are confident. You are an achiever. You are driven and self-motivated. You excel in your academics. You strive for virtue in your personal life. You are always ready to take on the next big challenge. And you want to do things with your life. Great things. In short, you strive for excellence and pursue greatness in all that you do. And what is in your future? How will you continue to avoid mediocrity and achieve greatness? How will you best fulfill the vocation for which God has created and called you? Where are you going and what will be your lasting legacy? At Christendom College, we are committed to helping you answer these questions. We want to give you the tools you need to dream big and become successful in all that you do. We want to inspire you to greatness—so lacking in today’s world. Our unique and rigorous curriculum will expand your intellect in such a powerful way that you will be empowered to fulfill the dreams that God has put on your heart. As a result, you will enter the world prepared to succeed in a way that no other college curriculum can provide.

TIME-TESTED EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION

Nicolaus Copernicus. Louis Pasteur. St. Thomas More. Queen Isabel of Spain. Pope St. John Paul II. They were all educated in the Catholic liberal arts. And they were all great men and women who made a deep impact on the world and left a lasting legacy for generations to come. They are what Christendom College founder and historian Dr. Warren H. Carroll called “history-makers.” He believed that, as evidenced throughout the history of the world, “one man can make a difference.” Through the actions of one person, so much good can happen.

We want to inspire you to do great things and make history. By immersing yourself in the time-tested, Catholic, liberal arts education and tradition found at Christendom College, you can be that one man or one woman who can make a difference, helping to fulfill Christendom’s mission of “restoring all things in Christ” in your chosen vocational calling. And since Christendom College was the first and, until recently, the only Catholic college in America to accept no federal money, you can be assured that we remain totally free to teach the Catholic Faith without government interference.

In September 1977, Dr. Warren H. Carroll founded Christendom College in response to the Second Vatican Council’s call for the formation of lay apostles. He served as the College’s president from its opening until 1985 and then as the chairman of the History Department until his retirement in 2002. Through Christendom, Carroll was able to reveal and develop his extraordinary skills as a Catholic historian, teacher, and author. He has won a welldeserved reputation as one of the foremost Catholic historians of our time, perhaps the greatest of the 20th century. Most notable among his works is the multivolume History of Christendom. Carroll passed away in 2011, yet his legacy lives on through our students and alumni, as well as through his books and memorable phrases: “Truth exists. The Incarnation happened,” and “One man can make a difference.”

“Christendom students are able to distinguish themselves in the job market because they have a ‘special skill’: the ability to think.“ TIM HALISKY ‘01 | B.A., HISTORY PRESIDENT, RLA MID-ATLANTIC

“Always remember that every subject you study is part of a bigger picture. Never allow yourselves to become narrow. The world needs good scientists, but a scientific outlook becomes dangerously narrow if it ignores the religious or ethical dimension of life, just as religion becomes narrow if it rejects the legitimate contribution of science to our understanding of the world. We need good historians and philosophers and economists, but if the account they give of human life within their particular field is too narrowly focused, they can lead us seriously astray.” - POPE BENEDICT XVI

“It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts, but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.” - ALBERT EINSTEIN

HISTORY

OUR ALUMNI ARE SUCCESSFUL AT GRADUATE SCHOOL.

Christendom College imparts a solid foundation in the culture of Catholic Western Civilization that gives our graduates a unique ability to engage and renew modern culture.

Creighton School of Medicine

We emphasize the truths of faith and reason as passed down by such luminaries as Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, G.K. Chesterton, and Pope St. John Paul II. After having studied the Catholic liberal arts in a supportive, vibrant Catholic community, you can then go out into the world and be a “history maker,” advancing truth in an age of doubt, and faith in an age of unbelief, and ultimately changing the world and bringing others to Christ. This is not an easy task in today’s secularized world. In fact, it is a very hard one. It is a task from which many shy away and one for which most are unprepared to be effective and successful. But you have never strayed from the difficult. You thrive on the idea of taking on a new challenge and succeeding. You welcome the opportunity to become that one man or one woman who can make a difference. And our unique educational experience will help you achieve your goals.

MYTH BUSTER POP QUIZ Q: WHAT DO THESE COMPANIES HAVE IN COMMON?

Christendom College was founded to offer students the best Catholic liberal arts education available. It is a challenging education, which focuses on reading the great works of Western Civilization while incorporating writing into the curriculum.

It is the same education that has inspired and produced the greatest scientists, scholars, heroes, and saints over the past 2000 years. It is time for you to stand up and be counted among those who choose the True, the Good, and the Beautiful, and who want to live a demanding and noble life of virtue. It is your time to take on the challenge of heroism and to inspire others to dare to be great. Let us help you. Through our carefully crafted core curriculum, you will learn how to think logically and to express yourself clearly—skills absolutely necessary for anyone who wishes to influence society for the better. We immerse you in the great ideas and works of the Western tradition and delve deep into history so that you can study the past actions of mankind in order to more prudently determine your own actions, assess society, and better influence the course of events.

A: All of these companies’ founders or CEOs were liberal arts majors. Our unique and rigorous curriculum will empower you to become tomorrow’s leader in whatever vocation God calls you. The truth is that our Catholic liberal arts curriculum will expand your intellect in such a powerful way that you will be enabled to become the CEOs of tomorrow.

“Christendom really helped me, not only in medical school, but as a physician, to see the person as a whole, not just the body, which medicine has a strong tendency to do.“ JOHN PAUL JANSEN ‘04 | B.A., HISTORY PHYSICIAN, SAINT LUKE’S MEDICAL CENTER

CORE G REAT NESS Our unique core curriculum sets us apart and is what allows us to be the gold standard for Catholic liberal arts education today.

It is designed to provide an orderly, sequential presentation of the fundamental principles of mathematics, natural science, philosophy, and theology, in conjunction with the historical and literary knowledge that is foundational for an understanding of Western civilization. The transformation of all history by the Incarnation makes a truly Christ-centered study of the past an indispensable hallmark of a Christendom education. Without this focus, it is nearly impossible to truly understand the present and shape the future. You will examine the formation and disintegration of Christian culture from ancient times to the present and investigate the historical consequences of thoughts, teachings, writings, and ideas in the areas of philosophy, political science, theology and literature. You will be equipped with a well-formed and broad understanding of the past. This focus on history will assist you as you go on to make history yourself.

INT E GRAT E D L I F E Although the primary aim of Christendom College is academic, intellectual formation cannot rightly be severed from spiritual, social, and personal formation. Just as the different academic disciplines are integrated in the Christendom curriculum, so too is that curriculum integrated with the rest of your experience at the College. Education is furthered not only in the classroom, but also throughout the entire day as students converse with each other and with their professors.

STUDENT CLUBS & ACTIVITIES There is so much to do at Christendom! Each year, there are over 100 student run events—from music festivals to dances, variety shows to debates. No matter what your interest or talent, you will have the opportunity to get involved and expand your horizons.

Christendom is not merely a curriculum of courses: it is an organic way of life which helps the whole person mature in wisdom, virtue, and ability— intellectually, morally, socially, and spiritually. We offer you many opportunities to gain real-life experiences so that you can be better prepared for greatness and acquire the tools to be “history makers” after graduation. You will have ample opportunity to gain leadership skills; take part in prolife and outreach programs; showcase your musical, athletic, or performance talents; join a variety of social clubs and groups; and improve your skills through internships, leadership positions, and on-campus employment. And to help broaden your worldview, you will have the opportunity to spend a semester studying in the Eternal City— Rome; spend three weeks of the summer immersed in the Land of Saints and Scholars—Ireland; and spend spring break living as a missionary amongst the poorest of the poor in third world countries.

“I would put the academics of Christendom College against any other school for helping its graduates learn to think.“ MARK ROHLENA ‘00 | B.A., HISTORY DIRECTOR OF DOMESTIC SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, USCCB

EMPOWERED TO EXCEL Damian Fedoryka ’94 Theology

THE ROAD TO

GREATNESS Our graduates strive to make their mark on history by being great at what they do. We empower them by expanding their intellects, educating them in an ordered liberal arts curriculum that is focused on wisdom and truth. Unfortunately, most colleges have stripped the liberal arts from their curricula and have focused exclusively on specialized job training alone. While that may result in the rapid development of a vocational skill, your mental powers and habits will be narrowed. With a technical degree in hand, it is likely that you would resemble a cog in a machine—useful in its place, but often incapable of the vision and adaptability needed for a life of leadership and excellence. This limited and technical vision of education has resulted in a culture of mediocrity and relativism.

As John Henry Newman, an authority on Catholic higher education, observed, a well-educated liberal arts graduate attains an intellectual prowess in which he or she can take up any endeavor and thrive with competence, grace, versatility, and success. Unlike the non-liberally trained graduate, the Catholic liberal arts student becomes equipped for a life of leadership and excellence.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE

ADVENTURE & BEAUTY

CHALLENGE?

Our alumni are answering their call to greatness. They are employed in just about every field possible, from IT to marketing, medicine to business, finance to education, and are successful in graduate school. They go out into their communities, living the Gospel as witnesses to the Truth. They live their vocations, strive for holiness, and help others with whom they come in contact to fulfill their vocations as well. Some of our more notable “history makers” are lawyers, educators, public policy writers, journalists, media consultants, and of course, fathers and mothers, priests and religious. Christendom’s entire educational experience is focused on helping our alumni grow in wisdom and holiness so that they can be prepared to restore all things in Christ and become “history makers” in the great culture war of our time.

This is not an education for the faint of heart, but for those who are willing to accept the bold and challenging call from God to become the great men and women He wants them to be.

“Christendom instilled in me a desire to make a difference in the world. The liberal arts education trained me to think creatively, innovatively, and expansively.“ GREG BODOH ‘94 | B.A., THEOLOGY FOUNDER & CEO, SOLE SOLUTIONS, INC.
