“Though not even three weeks long, we will have the memories of our Rome semester enshrined as one of the best experiences of our lives. This is a bond we will forever share, giving up that small gift to God, that we may grow closer to Him and each other. While the semester was cut short, what we experienced we will never forget.” - Maximilian Weidenkopf

SPRING ROMERS
47
Christendom Responds to COVID-19 Without a doubt, the 2019–20 academic year was one of the oddest and perhaps the most challenging Christendom College has ever faced. Being together is integral to our communal pursuit of wisdom, virtue, holiness, and friendship. While being physically separated due to the coronavirus was a difficult burden to bear, students, faculty, and staff showed incredible resilience and positivity during the difficult spring months, coming together and connecting in c eative ways.
After an additional week of spring break, Christendom launched online classes. This transition was made possible by the hard work of the faculty and many staff members.
Mr. Brown kept us connected by hosting trivia nights on Zoom. Not only did students join in, but siblings, parents, and alumni also joined in the action.
Fr. Pollard kept us spiritually grounded by sending out daily emails and weekly videos. Even though we weren’t hearing it from the pulpit, we definitely got our “spiritual homework.” 48
“Now, more than ever, it is important to remain joyful and connected. The love, joy, and sacrifice sha ed in our community go beyond 134 Christendom Drive. Pray hard and stay together!” – Annie Sullivan, Student Body President
Marilyn Charba and members of SAC organized Virtual Coffee House, bringing some much-needed humor to our community.
Staff members kept the senior star tradition alive, drawing a star for each graduating senior.
Faculty and staff gathered for May Crowning on May 13, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, Patroness of Christendom College. During the ceremony, Dr. O’Donnell lit a votive candle for the intentions of the entire student body. This candle was to remain lit until students’ return to campus. 49

Lianna Youngman - Design Assistant “Speaking as a very sentimental person, the opportunity to work on the yearbook has been a dream come true. I have gotten to relive the dances, events, and everyday joys of campus life even in a world in lockdown. Father O’Kielty always said, ‘We’re Catholics, we ought to be the happiest people on earth.’ This yearbook, filled with smiles, inside jokes, general tomfoolery, and indomitable spirit, embodies that statement to the fullest, and was a pleasure to be a part of.”
Laura Matthys - Chief Editor Even though Christendom went remote before the design phase of the yearbook began, Matthys deserves recognition for recruiting volunteers and organizing meetings throughout the fall semester.

Letter from the Senior Editor Dear students,
What. A. Year. None of us could have anticipated that the academic year would end with online classes and endless Zoom meetings. None of us could have pictured our tight-knit community scattered in different states, and even different countries. Christendom is a family and being apart has been a heavy cross to bear. While the spring semester came with many challenges, I see a clear silver lining. I believe we have come to a deeper appreciation for the incredible community that is Christendom College. I hope that this edition of The Blue Mantle will bring you memories of the special times we have spent together as a community, and excitement for what the 2020-21 academic year has in store. I would like to thank those who supported me throughout the process of creating the yearbook. With all the yearbook staff sent home before the yearbook entered the design phase, it seemed that tackling this project would be an insurmountable task. So thank you to my colleagues Niall O’Donnell and Zach Smith for encouraging me and making it possible for me to set aside the time to design, design, and design some more. Thank you to our summer marketing assistant, Lianna Youngman, for being my design assistant, spending hours creating the athletics pages and several other spreads. Thank you to Editor in Chief Laura Matthys for organizing many meetings and rallying volunteers, even though COVID got in the way in the end. Thank you to John Paul Gutschke, Gwyneth Sawicki, and Phoebe Wing for taking the headshots during the fall semester. Finally, I want to address the Class of 2020. I speak to you not just as a staff member, but as a former classmate and fellow alumnus when I say that you have been in my prayers, and that my heart goes out to each of you. You have impressed me with your resilience, positivity, and faith throughout the spring. This is why the 2019-20 edition of The Blue Mantle is dedicated to you, the Class of 2020. Congratulations on your many achievements and best of luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely, Johanna Burke Staff Advisor and Senior Editor 101
THE BLUE MANTLE: THE MEAN IN G BEHIN D THE N AME Christendom College was founded under the patronage of Our Lady of Fatima in 1977, and she has helped the college grow and flourish in the 43 years since. When the Christendom College yearbook was first established in the 1980 s, it took on the name “the Blue Mantle” in honor of Our Lady. The yearbook would retain that name for a number of years, before the name changed simply to “Christendom College Yearbook” later – a name that would stick through the 2012–13 academic year. When the yearbook returned in the 2015–16 academic year, it was a no-brainer for the staff to bring back the original name as well, as a tribute both to the college’s first yearbook sta f and to the college’s patroness as well. 102
