A message from the Acting Principal

It is with great excitement that I extend a warm welcome to all students, parents, teachers, family, friends and guests to our College Production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella".

I am sure that what you will see, hear and feel during the performance will be amazing. You'll marvel at the characters, the colour, the costumes, the choruses, the comedy. But what we are most proud of at Christian College is the dedication, passion and teamwork that have gone into making this performance possible. It's actually why we call it a production. The end result, the product, is but the icing on a very large cake that has taken months to bring to the table.

I am so grateful, therefore, for everyone who has contributed to making it possible. From our Director, Kelly Clifford, in her second year at Christian College, to our Producers, Fiona Gardner and Andrew Dunlop, who collectively have more

than seven decades of contribution to our music program. From the cast, whether experienced or first timers, to the production crew. Thank you!

At Christian College we believe that every student is a reflection of God's creativity and purpose. Our aim is not only to educate minds but also to inspire hearts, encouraging each student to discover, embrace, and fully realise their God-given potential.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella provides a platform for our students to explore the boundless possibilities of musical production and leave their mark on another exciting chapter in the life of Christian College.

Cinderella the Musical and our Community

Staging Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella has been a valuable opportunity for our students, staff and families to collaborate and celebrate our wonderful community at Christian College. The cast consists of auditioned students from Years 6 – 12 from four campuses. The orchestra consists of 15 students from Years 10 – 12, alongside staff members from our Music Faculty. Backstage and front of house roles are being carried out by a large team of around 20 students alongside past students, parents and staff.

The production team consists of staff from the Drama and Music departments, but also members of other faculties who generously share their broad range of skills and passions with each other and the students. Something that is significant and evident during the whole process, is an understanding of the value of this experience for our students and community.

The set, costumes and props have been gathered and crafted with care by a team of staff, parents and students. The project has been supported by College administrators and support staff.

The Christian College cross-campus musical productions provide valuable, transformational, authentic learning experiences for our students whether they are in the cast, engaged in the backstage crew, orchestra or painting sets. The friendships and positive relationships built between students of various year levels, staff, parents and friends are valuable to us and our community. As well, we celebrate our students having the opportunity to engage with a positive narrative; experience the thrill and joy of musical production; learn to persist; show empathy; have the courage to take a ‘risk’, and grow in self-confidence.

veryone knows the story of Cinderella, right? The rags to riches tale that involves a glass slipper, a ball, a handsome prince, and a royal wedding. Well, this story is a little different, it is not your classic Cinderella fairytale.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, premiered on Broadway in New York in 2013. It was nominated for nine Tony awards, winning a Tony for best costume design. This story was modernised from an adaptation of Cinderella that Rodgers and Hammerstein first created for television in 1957.

While this musical still includes a rags to riches tale; the characters in this production of Cinderella want to take charge of their own lives and destinies. Because of this, new characters and storylines are interwoven with your favourite Cinderella moments and songs - keep a look out for Jean-Michel, a feisty yet passionate villager!

With a cast of students ranging from Years 6 to 12 from four Christian College campuses, it has been a joy seeing how they have all interacted and supported each other regardless of age or year level throughout the rehearsal process. While rehearsals have been very busy with lots of activity for all the cast, from costume fittings, to singing and choreography, to acting and blocking scenes - there have also been moments of magic, fun and joy along the way for all involved.

This whole school production of Cinderella could not have been possible without the dedicated work of a large team of people, and I am grateful to every individual who has helped to bring this show to the stage.

This Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, (Broadway version) is a story of friendship, acceptance and finding your place in the world. So I invite you to sit back and enjoy the journey filled with music and theatre magic…

Synopsis

Cinderella the Musical

In this contemporary adaptation of Cinderella by Rodgers and Hammerstein, this classic story unfolds with the help of a pumpkin, a little magic and the idea that anything is possible. So dare to dream as we are all invited to the Prince’s ball.

Ella, dubbed “Cinderella” due to her role by the fireplace, yearns for a brighter future. She is generous beyond her years and resides with her overbearing stepmother and self-centred stepsisters, enduring a life akin to servitude since her father’s passing.

Meanwhile, Prince Topher, grapples with his uncertain future as ruler. Despite his prowess in being a slayer of giants and dragons, he lacks the confidence in his ability to lead his kingdom and is therefore misled, by the keen and cunning, Lord Sebastian.

That is until a chance encounter with Ella sparks a connection, igniting a flicker of hope within her and us ‘dreamers’ alike. Supported by her friends, Jean-Michel, an outspoken villager and an eccentric godmother, Marie, Ella’s dreams of a better life seem possible.

As the hype for a royal ball builds, there is some stirring in the town square, all thanks to the determined Jean-Michel. Amidst the flurry of activity in Madame’s household, Ella’s exclusion prompts Jean-Michel to urge her to seize the opportunity to advocate for change. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, Ella heads straight to the ball, where she catches the eyes of Prince Topher.

As midnight waits for nobody, Ella must disappear into the night. Determined to find her, Topher initiates a search, while Ella, back in her humble attire, reminisces about the enchanting evening. Amidst revelations and reconciliations, Ella’s honesty hits home with Topher, inspiring him to take a closer look at what is happening in his kingdom.

A second chance appears for Ella when Topher throws a banquet, to find his mysterious beauty. With her Fairy Godmother by her side, Ella reveals her true self to the prince, highlighting his own royal potential. Despite the striking of midnight, Ella leaves behind a shoe, leading to a kingdom-wide search and frenzy. When the shoe is reunited with its rightful owner, it sparks joyous reunions that are positively ‘heel-ing’ to the kingdom's heart.

Character descriptions

Ella (Cinderella)

Although no one notices her beneath her rags and quiet demeanor, she is opinionated, charismatic, passionate, funny, idealistic and hopeful.

Topher (Prince)

Longs to do something important with his life. Though brave and heroic, he has a goofy streak and feels lonely and unfulfilled.

Jean-Michel (Towns Person)

A feisty, passionate peasant who is determined to make a change for the lives of the townspeople. He has a crush on Gabrielle, although their relationship is forbidden because they are from different social classes.

Gabrielle (Stepsister)

Quietly passionate, empathic and witty, she unenthusiastically joins in with her sister and mother’s abrasive behaviour.

Charlotte (Stepsister) Brash, self-centered, materialistic, snotty, loud, sassy and bratty.

Madame (Stepmother)

A social climber who values wealth, status and material possessions above all else.

Marie (Fairy Godmother)

Wise, warm, otherworldly and charming.

The Royal Ensemble

The Royal Ensemble help run the castle, oversee the ball, look after guests, follow Sebastian’s orders and assist Topher on his wild adventures.

The Village Ensemble

The Village Ensemble consists of a variety of trades people and families. They live outside the castle near the forest and are hard working but happy, good-natured people.

Principal actors

Evie is in Year 10 and has been taking singing lessons since she was 6 years old; she has played piano for 7 years and has recently been learning guitar. She loves to sing and compose songs and has always loved to perform on stage. Evie was a member of the GSODA Junior Players for 4 years where she performed in shows, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, High School Musical 2 and The Wizard Of Oz. She also was a part of the last Christian College musical Shrek, where she played the role of Teen Fiona. Evie is thrilled to be cast as Ella in this production and looks forward to future opportunities in musical theatre.

Isaac is in Year 12, his passion for musical theatre was discovered during Christian College’s production of Peter Pan in 2017, his first ever musical theatre performance. Since then, he has joined and retired from the GSODA Junior Players and featured in various shows such as Aladdin Jr (Babkak), The Wizard of Oz (The Wizard) and Joseph (Issachar) as well as several variety shows. He takes weekly singing lessons to further his skills with Shayne Lowe and trains in both Jazz and Tap with DanceWorks Geelong. Isaac hopes to continue pursuing his love for musical theatre after school in local theatre productions, so this won’t be his last! Christian College’s production of Cinderella is Isaac’s first principal role, and he would like to extend his gratitude to the fabulous production team for this wonderful opportunity. Isaac looks forward to giving you a charming performance and hopes you enjoy the show as much as he has!

Ruby is an 18-year old girl with a big dream of making it to Broadway! Ruby found her passion having made her stage premiere playing the part of Grumpy in the College production of Shrek The Musical in 2022, as well as playing Betty in the Theatre of the Damned production of Catch Me If You Can in 2023. Born into a very musical household, Ruby is an avid lover of theatre, and completed GSODA Juniors’ theatre workshop in 2021. She currently studies voice with Shandelle Cooke and hopes to forge a career in the performing arts when she leaves high school. In her spare time, she loves to experiment with hair and makeup, and also hopes to bring this talent on stage in the near future.

Ellie is in Year 11, has a love for theatre and hopes to pursue it as a career. She started vocal training at a young age and has been learning voice with Jacinta Burns since 2020. Her last Christian College Production was Picnic at Hanging Rock where she played the role of Miranda. Ellie is currently dancing at Infinite Dance Studios, and has attended CentreStage Performing Arts Academy (CPAA) for the past 4 years, where her highlight was playing Ursula in The Little Mermaid Jr She is extremely grateful for the Cinderella production team, and the amazing cast. Ellie is thrilled to be playing the role of Charlotte and bringing to life all her quirks and comedic remarks. She hopes you enjoy Cinderella and can’t wait for you to see the show.

Chloe is in Year 12 and is thrilled to be playing Gabrielle in her final Christian College Production. After performing in our productions of Peter Pan, Annie, Shrek and Picnic at Hanging Rock, as well as a number of musicals outside of Christian College, she is excited but feeling bittersweet about participating in her last school musical. Chloe spends her spare time having singing lessons with Brad Treloar and Madeline Cain and dancing at DanceWorks. She is looking forward to taking the stage with her sisters and the cast of Cinderella!

Sebastian is in Year 9 and has always loved musical theatre. This is his first production with Christian College. He finds it very funny to be playing a character that shares his name, though he hopes he is not as villainous as his onstage alter-ego! Sebastian has also performed in productions of

The Little Mermaid, We Will Rock You and Frozen with CentreStage Performing Arts Academy. Outside of the theatre, Sebastian loves music and has played trumpet since Year 5. He also enjoys reading and writing.

Cuan is in Year 9 and has always loved “all things music.” His very first solo was on the stage of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in Belvoir players, Belfast, when he was only 5 years old. He’s also taken part in shows including Mary Poppins, Tangled, Sleeping Beauty and Madagascar. Cuan loves playing the saxophone and currently plays in four College ensembles at school. He is excited to perform the part of Pinkleton in the CCG production of Cinderella. Cuan is really enjoying working with this talented cast and hopes that the story of Cinderella will inspire us all to always believe in a little magic!

Delanee is in Year 12 and has performed in various on-stage productions such as Wish Upon a Song 1 & 2 (GLTS), Dainty June in Gypsy (TOTD), Serena in Legally Blonde Jr (CPAA) and Witch in Into The Woods (Stage Arts Geelong). Delanee has been singing, acting, and dancing since the age of 4. She attends musical theatre classes at Stage Arts Geelong, where she also receives singing lessons with Madeline Ybarzabal. She participates in tap and jazz classes at DanceWorks Geelong. Delanee also studies ballet at Geelong School of Adult Ballet. This is Delanee’s third show with Christian College, having made her debut with Annie, followed by Shrek. Delanee hopes you enjoy the show!

Quinn is in Year 12 and is proud to be part of Christian College’s production of Cinderella. Quinn has been performing since he was 10, in shows such as Hercules the Panto, and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe with GSODA Junior Players, Frozen Jr with Melbourne Kids Theatre, as well as making his lead debut as Donkey in Christian College’s production of Shrek the Musical. Quinn is very excited for you all to see the magic of this production and hopes that you enjoy the show!

Amelia is in Year 11 and has always had a love for the arts, with her interests mainly lying in photography, drawing, and music. In recent years, Amelia has found a passion for musical theatre and has begun singing lessons to further develop her skills. Her experience working backstage in the school’s production of Shrek allowed her to gain a love and full appreciation for all aspects of theatre. She is currently undertaking Units 1 & 2 Drama and is looking forward to completing Units 3 & 4 next year. Amelia has loved being a part of Cinderella and hopes you enjoy the show.

Freya is in Year 11 and has a deep-seated love for the performing arts and this has been evident since her early years. From the age of 7, she diligently honed her skills through dance and singing lessons, eventually transitioning to Parallax Performing Arts to further her craft. Her impressive resume includes standout roles in productions such as Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and Sleeping Beauty, where she notably portrayed Rosetta. In College productions of Shrek and Picnic at Hanging Rock, she showcased her talent in supporting lead roles. Freya has completed VCE Drama Units 1 & 2 and is currently enrolled in VCE Music Units 1 & 2 and Cert 2 VET Dance. She hopes you enjoy the magical show of Cinderella.
