VCE Music Unit 3 & 4 Subjects – thoughts/considerations
All Units 3 & 4 Music Subjects are designed to be studied following the completion of Units 1 & 2 Music. Students studying VCE Music are required to have a weekly instrumental music lesson with a teacher within the CCG Program, variation to this is to be discussed with the Director of Music. Students who wish to undertake a VCE Music Subject at CCG are to be a member of a College Ensemble and attend rehearsals and performances. The order of VCE music 3/4 studies for students who wish to do more than 1 will be an individual consideration for each student. Students will be advised by music staff which Unit 3/4 studie(s) will best suit their needs and also the order in which they should be undertaken. Considerations will include a range of things such as:- student’s performance interests/skills, study pathways, consideration of preparation for tertiary auditions, group members available in cohorts/across the year levels. Students may study 2 or more sequences of unit 3/4 Music and should be aware that the ‘top 2 scoring’ music studies will be able to be included in their ‘top 4’ with the remaining being considered 5th & 6th subjects for their ATAR score calculation. Students wishing to study more than 2 Unit 3/4 sequences are advised to speak with the Director of Music.
Music Contemporary & Repertoire • Students are allowed to study both Unit 3 & 4 Contemporary and Repertoire but are advised strongly against completing both in the same year. • The final performance exam can be completed as soloist or as a member of a group for both of these studies. • Both subjects have end of year Performance & Written exams, and the course work for each study is unique to the study. Music Inquiry and Composition
• These studies have practical/performance components but no end of year performance exam. They will cater for students who:• Want to complete more Unit 3/4 music study as well as the performance units – or a student who is well suited to only one of contemporary or repertoire performance. • Have an interest and motivation to further their skills in composition and or analysis. • INQUIRY – provides opportunity to study one area of music/investigation deeply. • INQUIRY – is suited to a student who is an independent/autonomous learner and motivated to investigate/research their individual project • Could cater for a student who is less inclined to perform live ….. however they are not ‘easy’ subjects and demand musical skills and knowledge in order to achieve the outcomes/tasks.
