U-SCAN Emergency response ultrasound bone scanner

The objective of designing this product was so information could be sent to the hospital immediately from the scene of the accident to speed up assessment and treatment time once the patient reached the hospital. U-Scan also includes a detachable screen held on by small magnets to make the device more portable. “Identify an opportunity for an IoT product for which the industrial design is dedicated to a clearly defined context e.g. healthcare, leisure, sport, security, travel. This opportunity may be based around current needs or projected up to five years into the future. Duration: 12 WEEKS Ideation, Prototyping, CAD, Rendering

“Broken bones are among the most common orthopedic problems, about 6.8 million come to medical attention each year in the United States...”

3

“More than million people in the UK alone are estimated to have osteoporosis, a condition that causes around 500,000 broken bones every year.” U-Scan could be used by first response teams and be stored within their vehicles.

/

40%

“More than of fractures occur at home (22.5% inside and 19.1% outside).” It is not uncommon for fractures to go undiagnosed for a period of time resulting in multiple visits to health professional’s eg pharmacies, GP’s etc. U-Scan could be a useful device to speed up accurate diagnosis.

10.7

“In 1998, over million fractures were seen by physicians in office-based practice (this included visits for follow-up care).” U-Scan could be used to monitor fracture healing in a GP practice

Scenario

/

U-Scan is a new conceptual product that uses ultrasound technology to scan an injured person to quickly determine fractures

U-Scan could become standard equipment within ambulance and first aid response team’s vehicle’s.

The ultrasound waves detect if a fracture is present. This information can be clearly seen on the detachable screen of the U-scan.

Data from the U-scan could be sent directly to the hospital giving the A&E department detailed information on the type of fracture.

U-Scan would be used to assess the patient and to determine whether a fracture is present.

By sending the information ahead of arrival the A&E department is given more time to prepare to receive the patient, reducing time spent on diagnosis.

Flat packable dustpan and brush

Designed with student accommodation in mind, but could also extend to the camping and caravan enthusiast. It can completely flat pack to a near A4 sized sheet allowing it to be stored with ease, taking up minimal space in drawers and cupboards. It could also be hung unobtrusively on a wall or door. “Using a live hinge or hinges you must design a homeware product for student accommodation that must be capable of compact storage. The predominant material shall be Polypropylene with the exception of fasteners and/or special purpose componentry. The size of the product should not exceed 500mm square and 300mm height. Duration: 1 WEEK Ideation, CAD, Rendering, Client Research

Research

Going to student self-catered accomodation to discover what items are most common. These products were then laid out and looked at to see if a product could be improved with the use of a live hinge.

Testing low fidelity foam board model with a student. This provided insights into how they would interact as well as the time it took them to construct the product.

A dustpan and brush was chosen as the product because it is a bulky item taking up much needed space within a students cupboard. The solution was to design a flat packable dustpan and brush to fit under or next to student utensils and take up little to no space.

//

User took approximately 15 seconds to assemble the product. They were able to completely construct and use product without any instructions or intervention.

GUARDIAN Promotional SD Card Protector

This product was designed to be a promotional give away item for the company Nikon. The product houses and protects the user’s SD cards within its LDPE casing. “You are to design a functional polymer ‘widget’ that is intended to be given away to promote a particular brand / product. Your widget must: Have more than one part that fits together to meet a functional requirement, use a doner part(s) from an existing product, or act as a replacement for an existing product to provide customisation.” Duration: 4 WEEKS - (Work in Progress) CAD (Model and Injection Mould Tool), Low-Fidelity Prototyping, Engineering Drawings

DisCreet RFID scanning condom machine for C card users

This product was designed to help speed up the process of purchasing condoms as well as attempting to remove the socially awkward stigma of buying condoms from over the counter. “Design an interactive prototype to improve your domestic environment, local or campus facilities that you encounter in your everyday life. (Group Project) Duration: 4 WEEKS Coding, CAD, Story Board, Low-Fidelity Prototyping

PERSONA

ENVIRONMENT

STRATEGY

Meet Jack Williams, a second year student from Bristol studying Politics. He is enjoying his course, working hard, aiming for top grades. His friends persuade him to join in with nights out, to enjoy the “uni experience” He’s a responsible guy, but a little shy especially around girls. He has just met someone he really likes!

This product would be discreetly situated within lavatories, student accommodation blocks and pharmacies. It is quick and easy to use with the swipe of a card. The device would be wall mounted and is activated by using a RFID card scanner and a “C” card. The “C “cards can be purchased and topped up either online or at pharmacies.

To create a working prototype of a C card scanner and condom dispenser. By reducing the time, effort and stigma involved in purchasing condoms, individuals will feel more relaxed and confident about purchasing them. The model should be quick and easy to use whilst being minimalist in design, thereby reducing unwanted attention.

Scenario 1 2

The user want to buy condoms but is unsure how much they cost and where to get them from.

3 It is an uncomfortable topic for the persona to talk about and they don’t like the idea of getting them from over the counter.

4

With the use of an app the user can see the locations of DisCreet machines nearby where they don’t have to speak to anyone.

5 The C-Card needs to be scanned on the RFID scanner, this can be done 10 times before the user will have to top up their card.

6

Once scanned the machine will kick into life, dispensing a packet containing 5-10 condoms. The packet With the packet collected, the user can enjoy safe will fall into the tray. sex.

FLEUR

KINETIC WIND SCULPTURE

April 2017

Brushed stainless steel and patinated copper provide an aesthetic appropriate for this modern sculpture. The shape is inspired by nature. Whilst at rest, the wind catchers form a flower shape, due to careful weighting of the materials. The techniques involved soldering, annealing and forging which resulted in a product sturdy enough to outlive us all.

ABOUT ME I like to think of myself as a versatile designer and a good allrounder, from initial concept all the way through to final product. I have always been passionate about design from a young age with construction toys and tinkering with tools. As my drawing skills improved, my ability to get ideas on to paper, then into reality was exciting. The chance to create something from a free flowing mindset with no limitations is immensely satisfying. I particularly enjoy the sketch renderings and my hands on experience with many different materials has significantly improved my model making skills. I am looking for a 12 month placement where I will be challenged and stretched in all aspects of industrial design. I am keen to improve my skills and knowledge in all areas and enjoy both working as part of a team or independently. As a youngster, I was fortunate enough to enjoy an international upbringing having lived in both Germany and The Netherlands for most of my life. I am fluent in Dutch and have a very good understanding of cultural differences from my International schooling. My experiences abroad have both inspired me and broadened my horizons massively. Outside of studies, I am very enthusiastic about sport. Sport has been a big part of my life from a very young age and I have tried just about everything. My current passions are archery, snowboarding and middle distance running. I am a member of Loughborough Archery 1st Team and partake in competitions when possible. Skills I have mastered from sport, such as patience, precision, persistence and dedication have also helped with my studies and life in general. The ability to analyse your own performance, make adjustments and persevere until you get the result you want are equally valuable in industrial design. I am ambitious, hardworking and selfmotivated. Feel free to CONTACT ME at anypoint.
