ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO Christian Degn

H e l l o, M y n ame i s Chri st i an De gn

My name is Christian and I am an Engineer with specialization in architecture from Aalborg University. My education at Aalborg University has given me a good understanding of both the engineering- and architectural aspects of a design process. Integrated design is a natural part of my mindset after five years studying Architecture & Design. I intend to use my knowledge within both the engineering- and architectural fields to achieve a good balance of structural, functional and aesthethic parameters in the design process. My competencies are within parametric design and integrating optimization processes in the overall design process. I have been using Grasshopper, a parametric tool for Rhino, as my primary 3D modelling tool over the last few years. Parametric design allows for quick adjustments along the

design process based on complex analyses and investigations. I have developed a personal interest for optimization, as I think it is an area with a big potential. I strive to include optimization processes as an integrated part of the design process, to avoid many future problems but also in a sustainable perspective. As Grasshopper is a very versatile software, there are many parameters that can be optimized in a process such is indoor environment, material use, structural load capacity, etc. I hope to contribute with my good mood, innovative mindset, develop complex, digital models and maybe avoid some obstacles along the way by using my interdisciplinary knowledge.

I believe parametric design is an area that could have a huge impact on the architectural field. I use my spare time to develop my parametric skills within Grasshopper and Rhino, which has resulted in a few projects and working methods. I use parametric tools for different purposes. The tools can be used for conceptual development and shape design. Parametric design excels at organic shapes, repetitive patterns and complex structures. Furthermore, the parametric tools can also be used for technical investigations as an integrated part of the design process. This could be heatmaps, indoor climate, structural behavior and optimization processes. The images are from different spare time projects, where I have developed my skills with parametric design.

The concept for the design proposal of the New Ceres Park is inspired by the beautiful context of the Marselisborg Forests. The stadium is among the first in the world to be designed with a timber structure. The New Ceres Park has been developed with a frame structure of glued laminated timber elements from sustainably sourced wood, that together hold the dynamic and elegant roof cantilevering more

than 30 meters. The roof is shaped as a hyperbolic paraboloid, a mathematically defined surface, that with its double-curvature structure gains its strength, which allows for the impressive cantilevering roof covering the 25.000 spectator seats. The immense timber structure is proof of a future, where spectacular architecture can be designed with the use of renewable materials and innovative methods.

The New Ceres Park is designed with the intention of being the first part of the new vision Kongelunden, where aspects such as sustainability and the wide spectrum of cultural activities are important. The primary function of the new stadium is to provide better facilities for the football in national leagues for AGF, but also for international matches. The New Ceres Park will provide home ground for the national men’s, women’s- and youth’s team. Furthermore, the stadium is designed to host many other cultural activities for the area such as concerts with a capacity of 50.000 guests. The facilities around the pitch are developed for

all users. The players’ facilities are designed to enhance the focus of the players before a match, while the public facilities are designed to create the right atmosphere up to, during and after a match. The long history of the stadium is respected, as the existing red building in front with its open courtyard will be allocated with a new function as an entrance for spectators. The New Ceres Park will hereby be pioneering within the field of stadium design with a sustainable profile, that matches the vision of Kongelunden and Aarhus.

The Master Thesis project “New Ceres Park” was selected by Aalborg University to be a part of an architectural exhibition at Kappelborg in Skagen, Denmark. A 1:10 section of the timber structure of project was built in collaboration with “CREATE Prototype Lab” at Aalborg University. The exhibition is a result of a collaboration between Kappelborg and researchers and students from Aalborg University.

Through its Nordic architectural qualities and organic shape lying beautifully in the hilly landscape, the New Finse Station will become a new attraction for people to experience. As seen along the National Tourist Roads in Norway, art and architecture creates lies along the way inviting

people to stop the car and experience the nature. Now the time has come to introduce architectural experiences to the railways, and the New Finse Station sets an example of this, fulfilling the vision of attracting even more tourist to the area.

When getting off the train, the eye does no longer meet an anonymous station house or garbage and trash bins. Instead, one meets the new Finse Station that, through New Nordic qualities, has become an outstanding architectural attraction along the Bergen Railway for visitors to experience. The shape, flow and choice in materials ensures a

strong connection to the landscape and context. Moreover, the new station is a segmented building with practical functions near the train tracks and a more public area directed towards the view of Finsevatnet. By having mixed functions and flow passing through the station area, a lively place throughout the day will be ensured.

The building masses, platform and paths are connected through the use of a common material and a flexible structural system that transforms according to its functions. Hereby, a coherence between all parts are created. An overpass is incorporated to ensure safe passing over the train tracks and to give Finse an extraordinary path

for visitors to enjoy with incorporated viewpoints capturing the spectacular landscape. The New Finse Station will hereby, be an attractive destination for enjoying the nature, starting your hiking trip and getting an innovative and enjoyable train experience.

Grasshopper. Karamba, a plug-in for Grasshopper, has been used for an early on structural understanding of the system, while Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis has been used for the final dimensioning of the elements.

The final design is a result of iterations between architectural and structural preferences. Using different programs and plug-ins for different analyses, has resulted in a deeper understanding of the relations between aesthetics and construction. Three-dimensional stability has been investigated in

many ways through Karamba, while the dimensions of the elements has been investigated through Robot.

Located in Pebermosen, Northern Jutland, Denmark, the sustainable retreat is a perfect place to work in silence and peace. Made from primarily wood, the retreat fits in the environment rather than standing out. The retreat is faced South-West towards the marsh, where inspiration for work may be found. Large windows frame the beautiful nature in Pebermosen, in the same way that the leaves on the trees does it. In collaboration with

the nearby riding schools and farms, the retreat is powered by biogas. The farms and riding schools gets high quality fertilizer in exchange for the animal waste needed for the biogas. During winter a cosy atmosphere will spread, as the centrally placed fireplace can be lit and warm up the re-treat. In summertime the retreat will be cooled down using natural ventilation.

The New Aalborg Theatre exposes itself with its unique shape and by being elevated form the ground. The volume of the Big Scene is shaped from the functions of a Theatre with inspiration from an anatomically human heart. As the heart creates life in the human body, the Big Scene creates life in the theatre. The building of the Big Scene known as ‘The Heart’,

stands in contrast to the existing malt house. A part of the identity of the old Aalborg worth preserving. The old malt house will be renovated to modern standards and will be used for a restaurant and office space for the theatre. An underground building will contain two smaller scenes and work as pedestal The Heart.
