Summary
Beginning in February of 2023 and extending throug May of 2023, I worked as an intern at Tolila + Gilliland Atelier d’Architecture in Paris, France.
This report will describe the projects and competitions that T+G works on, the studio, and most importantly summarize the works in which I assisted in. During my time that I served as an intern at the agency, I assisted in six competion projects from all across France (some of which remain confidential due to their pending status). For all of these works, my main contribution was to aid in the graphical and schematic represention of each project. Additionally, I assited in several graphics for the firms website and social media pages.
Being exposed to so many competions of differnet scales and programs allowed me to gain the experience that these types of projects entail. I was also able to work with the majority of my other colleagues and learn from all of them.

Tolila + Gilliland
In 2011, Tolila + Gilliland Atelier d’Architecture was founded by the name-sake Gaston Tolila and Nicholas Gilliland. Based in Paris, the Atelier develops architectural and urban planning projects, both public and private, in France and abroad. The firm works with a broad range of architecture programs (housing, public works, offices...) with a particular attention to the integration of each project into its historic, geographic, and environmental context.
T+G currently employs sixteen individuals ranging from architects, urbanists, assistants, and directors. The firm is housed in a single studio which allows a high level of collaboration and exchange of ideas between colleagues and with Nicholas and Gaston.
Projects are concieved using several forms of graphic representation, whether it be 3D modeling, BIM, digital drawing, hand sketching, or model making. This approach allows for projects to develop in many different forms.
The firm is currently constructing and concieving several projects to completetion and its prescence and notability is seeing a rise throughout Paris and beyond.

Highlighted Works
The architectural practice of the workshop is characterized by a broad range of programs: urbanism, housing, public buildings, offices, healthcare, and retail. Focusing on the cultural, social and urban context of each site, the atelier’s projects are based on a sensitive analysis of the existing.
The atelier examines construction methods as a primary means to reduce the environmental impact of each building, from carbon footprint to material and energy life cycles. This methodology situates technique at the service of the inhabitants well-being, through a deepened exploration of the nature of materials, from textured concrete to structural timber, from earth brick to wood fiber insulation, while favoring natural, organic and geological sources.
The listed projects featured above are just several examples of built works by Tolila+Gilliland.

Saint-Sebastien
The site will host sensory and language deficiency activities and support developmental disorders. The challenge of the project is to relocate the activities of the IME (Institut Médico Educatif) and the SESSAD (Service d’Éducation Spéciale et de Soins à Domicile) to the new site located in Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire. This site integrates its urban location, connects to the transport networks and facilities, and to the other Ocens services (the institute’s headquarters and the CAMSP).
The project pays particular attention to recovering the qualities of the landscape and outdoor spaces. Our relationship with the site is therefore based on a subtle negotiation between urban integration and landscape quality.

The ambiances and atmospheres are designed to best meet the needs and expectations of the patients. Thus a diversity in quality of spaces is required on the one hand with acoustics and on the other. Audio buffer spaces were created to allow the children to be stimulated, to settle down, and to better incorporate the spaces and divide the different functions of the plan.

Nantes Bellevue
The site is located between the municipalities of Nantes and SaintHerblain, the Grand Bellevue urban renewal project aims to transform transformation of an entire neighborhood. The urban project of Grand Bellevue is the largest of the metropolis’ New National Urban Renewal urban renewal program in the city and aims to bring the neighborhood into the neighborhood into “urban normality”.
The essence of the project lies in the quality of life, based on the pleasure of living and of living together. Organization and quality of the housing are at the forefront of our approach.

We conceived the development of the block as a unique site that allows the meeting of the surrounding open spaces. In order to break with the "barrier" effect of the existing building, the project proposes a volumetric implantation allowing a great porosity between the heart of the block and its surroundings. Thus, on the main street, a central fault with casscading terraces makes it possible to create views towards the garden. Diversifying the architectural vocabulary within the block will allow to create a more heterogeneous urban fabric on a human scale. Indeed, it is through a differentiated volumetric work that each built volume develops its own identity.

The work of this project still remains confidential due to it currently being in the competition decision phase.
Key notes to this project include its materiality choice. The facde of the building consists mostly of local stone, which is not a material as often communily used. This project looks to its surroundings for inspiration on how new buildings can adapt and learn from the old in how we can build sustainably.
Other material choices and construction methods were also adopted to lower the new constrcutions carbon footprint.

Our work is guided by the desire to offer quality housing from an ecological, energy, and low-carbon point of view, all in a unique heritage context.
In order to meet the climate challenges, the project integrates aesthetic choices and technical constraints in a logic of constructive sobriety. This project is an opportunity to create an architecture that demonstrates the reuse of materials on site, to promote national reuse channels by rehabilitating the existing heritage.
Conservation-rehabilitation in the context of this housing operation makes it possible to keep a trace of the neighborhood’s working-class past and to open a dialogue by conceiving new uses for these structures.

This proposal of implantation and volumetry answers the constraints of the site, densifies it programmatically, and enhances the industrial heritage of the place.

The extension in wood planned on the Boulevard des Îles side is intended to complete the angle of the building to simplify the existing urban form and is aligned in height with the existing template.
This extension allows for the creation of additional housing surfaces and offers outdoor spaces designed as loggias to protect from the agitation of the boulevard.
