FEEDBACK SURVEY
welcome What joy to be together virtually. The past 18-months have left us longing for fellowship. As both Scripture and science affirm, humans thrive in healthy togetherness. We wither without it. Little wonder that so many across the globe -- perhaps all of us -- feel off kilter and out of sorts. COVID and its ripples have split human togetherness like nothing in all of history. Yet in this moment, we recall something deeper and truer. We see a light that darkness cannot overcome. From the burning core of Scripture pulses a single, powerful word: WITH. For we believe that at the center of all things lives eternal fellowship, the Trinity: Father with Son with Holy Spirit. He formed us not merely to look at us, like a sculpture, but that He might be with us. When sin split us from Him, He took on flesh and made His dwelling with us. Indeed, Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. His last words on earth promised this presence is permanent: “Lo, I am with you always...” This fellowship of God with His people rises naturally into fellowship among God’s people -- us joyfully with one another. And, from there, we follow our Lord’s example and call together, gladly choosing to be with our neighbors in their need, too. While the world pulls outward and apart, God draws us nearer, to Himself and to one another. That is why we are here: --To worship the God who is with us --To delight in fellowship with one another virtually --To learn to be more fully, wisely, fruitfully with our neighbor in need It is a true gift to experience these things together. Thanks be to God, our Immanuel. Jedd Medefind President, Christian Alliance for Orphans

CAFO Core Commitments Responsive Love. To act upon God’s call to care for orphans is not merely a matter of duty, guilt or idealism. It is first a response to the good news, the Gospel: that God, our loving Father, sought us, adopted us, and invites us to live as His sons and daughters (Jn 1:12, Gal 4:6, Eph 1:15; I Jn 3:1). We love because He first loved us. (1 Jn 4:19)
safely possible. Likewise, when families have been separated, reunification of children with their biological family is of first priority whenever children can be returned to a safe, nurturing home environment. Efforts that enable struggling families to stay together are a vital part of the Bible’s call to care for orphans and widows in distress.
Informed Action. Good intentions alone are insufficient. All care for children should be done with love that is guided by both knowledge and wisdom (Phil 1:9-11; Prov 19:2). Amidst the deep complexity of human need, no solution will be without flaws. Yet our aim must always be to offer the excellent care we would want to give Jesus himself – informed by both Scripture and the best available research, knowledge and proven practice.
Residential Care. Even as we champion the ideal of family, we can also honor the devoted care and protection provided by many quality residential facilities. We also recognize that therapeutic group settings can play an essential role in the healing of children with intensive needs. God created the family as the best environment for children, so new orphanages should not be created except in extreme circumstances. Existing orphanages should be helped to improve their quality of care and to develop programs that minimize out-of-home care.
Commitment to the Whole Child. To meet only spiritual or only physical needs is incomplete (1 Jn 3:17; Jms 2:16; Mk 8:36). Christian love seeks to address both. Even a cup of water given to quench the thirst of a child is of eternal worth (Mt 10:42). Yet of surpassing value is to know Jesus and our identity as children of God (Phil 3:8). Just as in the ministry of Jesus, we hold together the meeting of physical need with the Gospel that reveals God’s love. Priority of Family. Both Scripture and social science affirm that the very best environment for children is a safe, loving, permanent family. When this is not possible, the goal for each child should be – as a general rule – to move as far as possible along the “spectrum of care” options toward permanent family. Care for children should always be as safe, nurturing and close to family as is feasible for the given situation. Family Preservation. Children classified as “orphans” that have a surviving parent or other relatives willing to care for them should be helped to remain with family members whenever #CAFO2021

Central Role of the Local Church. The local church in every nation possesses both the Christian mandate and many other resources needed to care for the world’s orphans in a nurturing, relationship-rich environment. Every initiative to care for orphans should prioritize and honor the role of the local church, carefully pairing what foreign resources may be necessary with local believers willing to open their hearts and homes to orphans in their community. The Power of Unity. Scripture overflows with calls for unity in the Body of Christ (Ps 133; 1 Cor 12:12; Eph 4:3, Col 3:11-15; Phil 4:1-3). Such unity yields special strength (Ecc 4:9), welcomes the presence of Christ (Mt 18:20), and ultimately presents the truth of Jesus to the world (Jn 17:20-23). Disagreements are inevitable and sometimes even necessary. Yet amidst all that strains unity, we commit to honoring each other above ourselves (Rom 12:10) – and labor in unison to see every orphan experience God’s unfailing love. In the book, The Great Divorce, CS Lewis’ imaginative portrait of hell contains no horns or pitchforks. Rather, what gives the netherworld such horror is the utter separation. Its residents are eternally divided from their Creator and one another. Unable to bear with others, they move continually further apart. This fanciful image reveals a fundamental truth. The nature of evil is to sunder. It divides humans from their Maker… severs people from one another… and ultimately leaves us estranged even from ourselves. Separated. Alone. Without. Indeed, there is nothing worse. The deepest suffering is not physical pain, but isolation — a soul with recourse to no other. Little wonder COVID has left us deeply off-kilter and ill-at-ease. COVID has eroded human togetherness like nothing before. Amid all the losses of 2020, the heaviest were those that kept us from being with those we love. Perhaps more than we yet know, our souls languish without hugs and handshakes, shared worship and shared meals, times to mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice. To the degree that we found ways to still do these things, we yet could thrive amidst struggle. To the degree we did not, we began to shrivel. Without fellowship, humans wither. A century ago, careful observers noticed that when orphanages failed to provide babies with intimate connection, children became sick and died, even when all their physical needs were met. In contrast, studies show that when a child experiences tender care and connection, they are far more likely to thrive all throughout life — even in the face of great adversity. This need never disappears. One landmark 2015 review found that for adults, the regular experience of loneliness shortens life expectancy as much as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Even in old age, people with vibrant relationships remain measurably stronger, while those without fellowship decline far more rapidly, both physically and cognitively. Seeing all this, we begin to grasp why Scripture places such powerful emphasis on being with. Near. Close. Intimate. In the Garden, God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening (Gen. 3:8). In Jesus, He became flesh and made his dwelling with us (John 1:14). In the end, He will again live with His people (Rev. 21:3). Perhaps it is no exaggeration to suggest the word WITH is an axis upon which all Scripture turns. This begins with our understanding of God himself. For the Christian, blazing at the very center of all reality is the Trinity: the eternal fellowship of Father with Son with Holy Spirit.

From this burning core rise three great WITHs. God with us. Sin split the with between God and humanity. But at the heart of the gospel is God drawing near again. Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. On earth, this Immanuel chose disciples “that they might be with Him…” (Mark 3:14) Later, their opponents marveled at the result. “When they saw the courage of Peter and John… they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). Jesus’ final words to His followers promised this presence was permanent. “…Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). Us with one another. God’s presence with His people spring naturally into fellowship among His people. It is gathered prayers and worship, grief and delight carried together, common meals, shared sacrifices, mutual care (John 13:35, Acts 2:42). Our hearts long for this. The greatest stories — from The Fellowship of the Rings to Little Women — glow with this kind of devoted togetherness. It is what we were made for. Even when it is difficult, to live truly with one another is among life’s sweetest gifts. God’s people with those in need. These first two withs rise into a third. God entered our space and pain, and now invites us to do likewise for others. The prime verb in James 1:27 shimmers with this with-ness. “To care for” (episkeptesthai) orphans and widows carries no hint of sending aid from a safe distance. Rather, it suggests showing up, drawing near, hazarding deep personal involvement. It takes the hand of a woman who has just lost her son. Holds the drug addicted newborn all night. It welcomes into our church and home and heart the parents whose children were removed by CPS. When God’s people demonstrate with like this, a pure and undefiled reflection of God-with-us is set before the world. This with is at the heart of all we experience together here in Cincinnati, side-by-side. Together, we laud the God who is with His people. Together, we take joy in being again with one another. Together, we each both give and receive, learning how to most fully be with the hurting in ways that effectively heal and wisely restore. Following a year marked by so much separation and distance, to be gathered here together is a precious with indeed.

10 Principles for Effective Family Strengthening We know that children belong in families, but the reality of our broken world is that millions of children live apart from family care. Frequently, families are not able to care for their children unaided, but would be able to do so with support. This can both prevent children from being separated from their families, and ensure child and family wellbeing during family reintegration. “Family strengthening” has become a popular term in the field, but exactly what does it me? Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families.
