FROM THE PUBLISHER Spring arrives this month on March 20. What a wonderful season of the year to celebrate God’s glorious and awe inspiring creation. Spring brings beautiful sunrises, warmer days and plants, flowers and trees begin to come alive showing their beauty once again. Birds build nests and eggs hatch, bees begin to buzz, butterflies appear, all letting us know that another Springtime awakening has arrived. We’ve heard it time and again, “stop and smell the roses.” It seems so difficult for us to do because of the hectic and fast paced lives that we all seem to lead. But it’s important for us to do that from time to time. Springtime is the perfect time to “be still and know that He is God” as you just enjoy God’s marvelous handiwork in His creation of such a complex yet beautiful and awe inspiring world. On a upcoming pleasant spring day, get your family together and have some quality outdoor family time discussing the beautiful seasons including spring, that we are so blessed to be able to enjoy thanks to God’s awesome power.

94 FM The Fish & One Generation Away Seek to Impact Middle Tenn. Communities As our state continues to grow, our neighbors’ resources are even more limited. Within Middle Tennessee communities, there are families and individuals who are struggling with access to basic necessities. 94 FM The Fish and One Generation Away have partnered with community business leaders in an effort to make a difference in our own back yards through an event called You Matter Saturday. This event seeks to provide tangible resources for those in attendance along with services that they might not normally have access to. Part of the mission of You Matter Saturday is to restore dignity to a population of people who have been robbed of their humanity. At You Matter Saturday, our neighbors receive free health screenings, free dental screenings, access to free counseling, free toiletries and human services. They also have the opportunity to open free checking accounts and receive grocery carts full of food to take home with them. While attending You Matter Saturday, praise
and worship music provided by Greg and Wa’Lisa Smith fills the venue and inspires those in attendance to take heart and rest in God’s promises. There are no checks and balances required to receive resources on this day. The only thing that is asked of recipients is if there is anything they need prayer for. Volunteers pray with recipients right on the spot. 94 FM The Fish continues to inspire listeners to be difference makers in their own communities by volunteering for events like You Matter Saturday and showing their friends and neighbors that that truly do matter. F eatu r e Williamson Memorial and Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Homes have been owned and operated by three generations of the Stephens family for over 30 years and are still going strong. Unlike some other “family businesses, the daily responsibilities are taken care of by six family members and their dedicated staff.
In 2016 Williamson Memorial donated $1500.00 to the Mercy Clinic in Franklin. An additional $1500.00 was donated to the Smokey Mountain Fire Relief effort through the Franklin Noon Rotary Club.
Each year our funeral homes each honor families we were privileged to have served that year by hand painting an ornament and displaying them on Christmas trees in our lobbies. The names and dates on the ornaments are painted on personally by co-owner, Pam Stephens. The ornaments are hung with care and we know that with each name there are families in need of comfort during the holiday season. In addition to creating an ornament for each family that we served, we also take orders for extra ornaments to be made. We do not charge the family for the first ornament however we charge $5.00 for any additional ornaments ordered. 100% of the money from these sales throughout the year is then given to one or more local charitable organizations at the following Candlelight Memorial Service. At right, Stirlin Marlin, 4th generation family member participating in the program.
Also in 2016, Spring Hill Memorial was able to donate $1000.00 to the Spring Hill Fire Department for the purchase of a new heart defibrillator that they had been needing. We have a candlelight memorial service the first Tuesday in December at Williamson Memorial and the first Thursday in December at Spring Hill Memorial. The service is open to the community and we encourage anyone that has to deal with grief through the holidays to attend. Each year as part of our candlelight service we have a professional speak for a few minutes about grief during the holidays and ways to cope with it. We also have local musicians come and perform as well as a special music selection that plays during the candle lighting ceremony. Once the service is over we have cider, coffee and refreshments for our guest. — Mandi Marlin, third generation Funeral Director

F am i ly m at te r s Three Conversations to Have With Your Spouse We have all had those moments where we finally have alone time with our spouse and we find that we can’t think of something to talk about. Our brain could be fried from work or we could feel overwhelmed from a day with the kids. We can muster up a ‘how’s your day?’ which are usually followed up by a “fine” or “good.” When we do not take time to let our spouse into our day then you both miss the opportunity to connect and support each other. Here are three questions to ask your spouse that fosters much-needed conversation: 1. “What was your high and low of the day?” This is asking what is the best and the worst part of their day. Caution: Do not give advice here. This is not a time for correction or telling your spouse what they should have done. This is a time to be curious about what it is like for them and to ask questions that show you are listening and caring. 2. “What are you looking forward to next week and what are you most nervous about?”
Very similar to the high/low conversations, however this conversation is about future events. Idea: When your spouse shares about what they are most excited about and nervous about with the upcoming week, put those items on the calendar. Then text your spouse to let them know you are thinking about them and supporting them. 3. “What is your dream or goal for 2017?” Since we are still early in 2017, this is a great time for the both of you to dream together of what you would like to see happen in 2017. Share your goals for 2017 for yourself and then the two of you dream up what you want to accomplish as a couple or a family. For example, your goal could be that you want to read four books this year. Your family goal could be that you all want to take walks together one night a week. Hint: When your spouse shares their goals, ask how you can help or support them in that goal.
Try these questions with your spouse and see the difference that open-ended questions make. If you are running into road-blocks in conversation with your spouse, I would like to invite you to a marriage workshop called " 7 Conversations to Enrich Your Marriage.” It is a 3-day event that will walk you through conversations every couple should have with each other. The feedback from couples on this workshop has been incredible and it is highly recommended. The next workshop is in March 2017 and you can find out more information at 7ConversationsNashville.com. — Lindsey Castleman, marriage and family counselor and co-creator of the marriage workshop “7 Conversations to Enrich Your Marriage.” Connect with Lindsey at castlemancounseling.com
m oN ey m at te r s Fighting Fear Dear Dave, After listening to your show, I want to try to get control of my finances, but I’m afraid to open up the bills. I make about $60,000 a year, but it’s a real struggle just to keep my head above water financially. My checking account is always overdrawn, and I don’t know where to start in catching up. Can you help? — Gail Dear Gail, Trust me, I know it can be scary. But the easiest way to attack this thing is by taking one slow, sure step at a time. Try not to let worry consume you in the process, either. First, sit down, take a deep breath, and open all the unopened bills. Throw away any duplicates, and keep only the most recent statements and notices. The unknown is always scarier than the known, so facing the bills and cutting that stack in half right off the bat will help reduce a lot of your initial anxiety. Next, let’s start a debt snowball. List all the debts you owe, from smallest to largest, making one column for the payoff balance, one column for the amount you need to get current on that debt, and
10
Nashville Christian Family
one column for the single payment amount when you get current. Total each column — the payoff balance, the amount to get current, and the single payment. I promise it won’t be as bad as you think. Finally, make a monthly budget. Prioritize your needs, starting with food, utilities, house payments and transportation. When it comes to your debts, pay as much as you can on the smallest one while making minimum payments on all the others. You can do this, Gail. If you’ll follow my plan, I think you’ll see improvement in several areas of your life and you’ll feel good about the progress you’re making, too! — Dave
Use An Insurance Broker Dear Dave, My mom is 73 years old, and she’s dealing with depression and a few other mental issues. Is it too late for her to get long-term care insurance? — Julie Dear Julie, It wouldn’t be a big problem if she were healthy. But given her age, and the other struggles you mentioned, I’d check with a good insurance broker to see what’s out there for her.
In the insurance world they call this “making a market.” Will they be able to find a company that will write her in that situation? I can’t give you an accurate answer off the top of my head, because this is a difficult thing. It would probably depend on things like the extent of her depression, how long it’s been manifested, and what it has done in her life. That’s one of the reasons I’m advising you to see an insurance broker. A broker doesn’t represent just one company; they represent several companies. They can shop around in a given situation, and find someone to write something you might not get written otherwise. They can also shop around for the best possible price, and you get the efficiencies of the marketplace working for you. God bless you both, Julie.

SELAH: MUSICIANS
In times of high-production electrifying music with endless instrumentation, how many people listen to simple hymns? Even in modern churches? Well, enough for the well-decorated music group Selah to earn more than four million units in sales; eight Gospel Music Association Dove Awards; five Inspirational Album of the Year trophies; one Gold-certified album; and eight number one singles. The divinely-coordinated trio—Todd Smith, Allan Hall, and Amy Perry—have experienced music to its fullest, some of it born out of tragedy. Why does Selah concentrate on hymns? Bringing hope and healing to people who listen is the group’s mission. Their style? Allan reminisces, “If siblings Todd and Nicol Smith hadn’t been such strong vocalists, we couldn’t have hidden that with just the piano, occasional strings, and the voices. I think that’s what really appealed to people. Many were getting tired of some of the slickness, and here we came—completely unvarnished.” At their beginning in 1997 and several years before other artists began such recordings, Selah foreshadowed notable changes in Christian music when they initiated hymn recording. However, changes came within the group when Nicol moved into another phase of life, and the founders “thought Selah might be done.” God had a plan, though, and along came Amy Perry with her stunning soprano voice. Well-entrenched individual styles still blend uniquely to produce Selah’s sound: Allan pulls from country and bluegrass; Todd caters to classic rock and CCM’s bygone days; and Amy delivers pop and urban gospel beats. Because of their varied fortes, the group continues to reach broad audiences in such venues as Nashville’s prestigious Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry.
SELAH: REAL PEOPLE
When considering how they balance family with touring careers, both Allan and Todd offer a thoughtful pause—followed by a quiet, self-conscious laugh. Then, Allan jumps in with insightful perceptions about life as a single man in a world of families and music. “Since I don’t have a spouse or kids, sometimes I feel like I’m not really planted. Two decades of Selah and I’m still grappling
12
Nashville Christian Family
or yearning. I don’t have a family with play dates for the kids. For almost two decades my life has been defined by weekend tours, meaning lots of work hours when others in a more traditional work scene have completed their week. My friends invite me into down time just when I’m gearing up for the busiest part of my week. Proximity has lots to do with friendships, and being in my 40s makes for a diminished circle of available people. Married friends, exhausted from their more typical work week, want to come home and crash with the kids and are not available for much social time at the time I’m available.” Put all that together and a single musician “roady” has few opportunities for social gatherings or making and maintaining friendships. “It can get pretty lonely,” concludes Allan. Todd chimes in, “Well, we haven’t quite got that [balance] figured out, but I do try to make the most of family time by truly being in the moment when I’m with my four daughters. I may take the older two to their youth group where they’re leading worship for the first time and then take the younger two to swim lessons. My wife Angie and I are basically home bodies when Selah isn’t touring.” In the midst of trying to balance family and career and church activities, Todd voices another astute observation: “In this age of social media, more and more people are incredibly lonely.” Most people do amazing things in this world, but no amount of busyness or electronics can cover up the inside hollowness brought from lack of true connection. Personal as well as professional connection shines through Allan’s comments about his association with Dolly Parton—his greatest musical mentor. Through her “Coat of Many Colors” and collaborating with her on a new rendition of her “Once Upon a Christmas,” they share a special bond. “She moved to Nashville at eighteen chasing a dream that God had put in her heart; I did the same thing. Coming from Knoxville, I really love music where the story and lyrics shine through.” Allan elaborates on his early link with Nashville as a 9-10-year-old: “I was deeply drawn to Nashville during family visits and felt like I belonged to this city—like it was home, a place where I
www.ChristianFamilyNashville.com
had music humming through me. I loved driving by the Ryman, exploring the Conway Twitty shop—everything associated with this city. Since I was the only one in the family doing music, I kinda felt like an oddball,” but Nashville changed that. Todd “came home” to Nashville, too, but his connection with the city came later—after back-and-forth Congo living with his missionary folks. His sister connected him with Belmont and the music-business world. Partners who describe each other as genuine and kind and who believe in each other exhibit deep respect for God’s plan.
SELAH: BENCHMARKS
Selah’s production, Hope of the Broken World (Curb), specifically reveals Todd, Allan, and Amy’s surrender to God, birthed from seasons of personal hardships. “You need to be honest about your desperation and how awful and horrible it is, yet at the same time put out there this incredible peace and hope and that you’ve got nowhere else to go and that you find strength through prayer and people praying for you and in God’s word. We don’t try to candy-coat it,” shares Todd. With Hope, Selah relates to and helps listeners heal through songs that contrast worldly hurt with spiritual hope. “We don’t know what people need when they put in a Selah CD or when they come to a concert,” says Amy, “we just want God to use us.” With Unbreakable, their latest studio album, the trio reaches a new benchmark. Known for their down-to-earth realness, soaring harmonies, and unforgettable arrangements, Selah provides inspirational anthems of faith married to the hymn classics loved by long-time fans. “People of the Cross,” a poignant song about the persecuted Church, is particularly important to Todd who describes it as “a response to the murder of 21 Egyptian Christians at the hands of ISIS and a reminder to pray for those who suffer for their faith. Many times, when persecution is so visible, it’s because Satan is so threatened. What we don’t see is that God is working supernaturally. Thousands of Muslims are having dreams of Jesus, asking people about the Bible, and coming to faith in the midst of all this darkness.” To Amy, the ballad “Broken Ladders” serves as a powerful reminder of her worth in Christ each time she sings it. “Ladders” describes her life-long struggle with self-esteem and acceptance, particularly after being bullied as a youth. “I’ve spent a lot of years feeling not good enough, not pretty enough— trying to meet the impossible fake-perfect standards of Instagram and Pinterest, standards no woman could ever achieve. ‘Broken Ladders’ broke open something inside me, allowing me to let those impossible standards go and lay those insecurities at His feet so He can do His work in me. Through Selah, He can remind our listeners that He’s real and present and will take care of them. If they hear that, we’re doing what He wants us to do.” Fans learn again and again that Amy is more than an incredible vocalist. Whenever she speaks from the stage, God uses her to minister to broken, hurting people in unique ways as she shares her own brokenness. She explains, “Hymns have
always been the foundation of who we are and what we do—strong, sound theology, written out of biblical Truth—never anything to manufacture a moment or get on the radio. We do it because we love, love, love it, and our fans trust us with modern sounds because of that solid foundation.” Revealing their emphasis on hymns, Allan once explained to a teenage boy where a song that he admired came from: He showed the teen a hymnal and told him it was “chocked-full of other really cool songs.” Allan sums up: “Parents are always telling us, ‘The only way our kids know these hymns is because we sing along in the car with you guys.’ If we’ve had any hand in keeping hymns alive for future generations, I feel like we’ve accomplished a dream.” Selah’s is a long obedience in the same direction, a testament to the power of one song—be it a modern original or a classic hymn reimagined. “When we share our testimony, we open up the Gospel and encourage the saints.” The fruition of Selah’s dream continues: They sing the hymnbook as only they can—completely unvarnished—sharing the unbreakable truth and hope of the Gospel to those who have ears to hear. — Sheila Moss, teacher, speaker, and author of Living to Matter and Interrupting Women—How Jesus teaches truths through His conversations with women.

H ealtHy l iVi Ng What do you think about on the treadmill? Is your brain running too? Some people go through to-do lists. Some try to solve a nagging problem with a project at work. Others decide what’s for dinner or who to ask to dinner. While others dream about future plans and possibilities. You might fall into all of these categories plus more, depending on the day. Sometimes the minutes on the treadmill are the only ones we give ourselves to process, plan and reflect. It might even feel like idle time for your mind, but it’s not. Your brain needs breathing room to work through your life happenings. Your spirit needs space to connect to God. And sometimes this is the perfect place—the treadmill. If you’re interested in practicing structured prayer while you walk or run, try the four stages below. They are based on a well-known format: A.C.T.S. = adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. Prepare yourself by focusing on a few breaths. Inhale, exhale, clear your head. Then begin.
1. Adoration. Start by praising God for who He is. He’s gracious, just, and good through and through. Remind yourself of his all-powerful, all-loving character. Recite Scripture you might know about him, like Isaiah 40:28: “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” Adoring God takes our eyes off ourselves, and directs them up to the One we can trust. 2. Confession. Now, take some time to admit your wrongdoings. Have you been gossiping? Acting hateful towards friends or family? Struggling with pride? Let God search your heart and point out dark places so that His light can shine in. Confessing our sins breaks their hold on us, and clears the way for the forgiveness of Christ to fill us. 3. Thanksgiving. Move into gratitude for every big and little thing you can think of. Your body is able to walk or run on the treadmill, so start there! Thanking God helps us notice all the ways He is taking care of us. It brings peace to anxious thoughts. Calling attention to God’s faithfulness today, gives us hope that it will continue tomorrow. 4. Supplication. Finally, our spirits are prepared to
ask God to meet our needs and desires. The Bible tells us to present our requests to Him, so go for it! He knows the longings of our hearts, but sometimes we aren’t fully aware of them until we talk with our Creator. What do you want God to do in your life? Don’t hold back. Ask him. Praying through A.C.T.S. can take a few minutes or an hour, and it’s a wonderful habit to have in your life. Give it a try, and watch how God will use it to bless you and others. — Courtney Keen is a content producer for the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, ymcamidtn.org

“Spring Clean” Your Automobile Spring-is around the corner which means it’s time for that beloved tradition, “spring cleaning”. For most people that means giving the closets and the garage a thorough cleaning but what about your car? I’m not talking about just a wash or even a good detailing. I’m talking about really getting at the nooks and crannies in your car’s systems to get out all the buildup and residue that can accumulate in the places you can’t see. To make this as easy as possible, the Hyundai of Cool Springs team and I have come up with a list of some ways to give your car a proper cleaning inside and out, plus a few tips to keep it in like-new condition. Here’s what to do: CLEAN BRAKE DUST OFF REGULARLY Brake dust contains all sorts of nasty stuff. If you leave it too long, the combination of road grime, moisture and heat from your brakes will bake it on to your wheels. Brake dust normally clings to wheels with static electricity so a damp sponge and clean cold water is the best way to get it off. CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE Check your tire pressures regularly. Low tire pressures can affect fuel economy, handling and comfort. It's so easy to do but can make such a difference to the well-being of your car. CHECK YOUR TREAD DEPTH Letting your tires go bald and slick is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Most tires come with tread wear bars built into them now find one, examine it and if your tread is too low, replace your tires. CHECK YOUR BELTS At the front of your engine there will be a series of rubber drive belts that loop around various pulleys, driving everything from the alternator to the a/c compressor. Get your timing belt and accessory drive belt checked every 25,000 miles, preferably replacing it every 50,000 miles. CHECKING YOUR OIL LEVEL Checking your engine’s oil level is easy and will quickly let you know if your engine needs oil. To check the oil, park on level ground and wait until the engine has cooled down after driving, then locate the dipstick. Pull it out and wipe it clean, then push it all the way back in until the top of it is seated properly in the dip tube again. Wait a moment then pull it out again. Check the level of the oil. If it's between the high and low marks, you're fine. If not be sure to schedule an oil change right away. There’s no putting it off and no getting around it but hopefully this list will make it easy to give your car a good spring cleaning so you can spend more time in the closet. This information is from your neighbors at Hyundai of Cool Springs and Genesis of Cool Springs — Frank Odrobina, Owner, Hyundai of Cool Springs and Genesis of Cool Springs
America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are still free and we still have a great majority of Americans that stand brave during adversity. Freedom extends to every American to say what’s on their minds in the political arena or to volunteer service with our Armed Forces. Very few places in the world enjoy the freedoms we have as Americans. Thomas Jefferson said: "Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?" How do we keep America great? What areas of our lives must be in place? Begin with a firm recognition that our freedoms come as a gift of God. We did nothing to earn the freedoms we enjoy. We are responsible for keeping them by obedience to God. When God is not recognized as the gift giver the erosion of a nation is evident. Four life areas to consider: Personal: Believers exercise God’s gift by developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus changes lives and the influence of that change can have a dramatic impact on the world around you. The Bible is clear when it reads to “Trust in the Lord with all our hearts, Lean NOT on our own understanding, in all our ways acknowledge Him and He will direct our path” (Pro 3:4-5). The Family: looks different that it did not too long ago. People are more apprehensive to be joined in holy matrimony, living together has become the norm for couples - half of young adults aged 20-40 are cohabiting instead of getting married. Cohabitation has increased nearly 1,000 percent since 1980, and the marriage rate has dropped more than 40 percent since 1960 (Dr. Janet Crouse - Lahaye Institute). Strengthening our relationships with our spouses must be foundational to the family structure. Young folks need to see how a good, honorable marriage works! Corporate: We need others believer and other believers need us. Exercise your free choice by finding a solid Bible teaching church family. Just know that other believers struggle like you do. Many have a heart to grow in their relationship with our Lord as you do. Build the body of Christ together. The Workplace: C. Peter Wagner says “What Christians do in the workplace is paramount to bringing the kingdom of God here on earth as it is in heaven.” Living a transparent and authentic life means allowing your relationship with God to illuminate every environment you enter, even the workplace. Besides, says Wagner, “The place to workout your faith isn’t just at church. What people do in the workplace is their ministry, just as much as singing in the choir is at church”. Personally, Family, Corporately (Church) and the Workplace are ways to live out the freedom God has given us. Live them honorably with intention. God will bless all your ways. — Tom Toner, ourcompanychaplain.com

Honoring God by Serving Others “To whom much is given, much is required” (Luke 12:48). The Lord gives all people certain talents and blessings. From the grandest to the simplest gifts, God calls everyone to use their skills and time to honor Him and serve others. Martin Plumlee believes that life is all about having integrity and honoring God, and he holds onto this verse of truth as he strives to serve his family, community, and country. Martin earned a scholarship to West Point for college and went on to become an officer in the army. Today, Martin continues to wear the uniform in Nashville’s Army Reserve, and he works with non-profits that aid the military. For example, Martin is on the board of directors at REBOOT Combat Recovery. This organization provides veterans with a community of support, along with physical and spiritual healing. Martin explained that he loves REBOOT’s work of healing vets by reaching their souls, and he became hooked on helping this program when he got to meet the families of vets who REBOOT serves. Two of Martin’s greatest passions are for the military and for economic empowerment, which aims to provide underprivileged people with opportunities. Therefore, Martin also serves on Habitat
for Humanity’s board of directors. He primarily does fundraising for Habitat to build houses, each of which costs around 70,000 dollars. Martin loves being a part of an organization that provides families in his community with homes. He said, “It is my sincerest belief that if more citizens would give back and pour their time & resources into their local communities, the nation would be better.”
Martin is compelled to give back in every way possible because he is blessed with good health, a selfless wife, healthy and happy children, and a growing business. Not only does Martin serve the nation through his military work, but he works on two non-profit boards of directors. Additionally, Martin has been donating blood to the Red Cross since he was sixteen years old. Martin sees this as a simple way for him to literally bring life to others, and now he has donated blood over eighty times. Martin challenges others to use their passions, abilities, and time to help people. He explained that a person’s life can be judged by how they spend their time and money, all of which ought to be spent glorifying God and helping people. He

Don’t Wander Life’s Course Can you imagine playing golf on a course where the holes weren’t numbered? Think about that. You wouldn’t know which direction to go and you might not even be sure if you’ve played all 18 holes. You’d wind up meandering around the course whacking balls, but you really wouldn’t be heading in any definite direction.
If purpose and meaning are to be found in Christ, then it is obvious one must have given his or her life to Him through salvation. That’s where purpose begins. After that, our relationship with Jesus shapes everything we do with our lives; the way we work at our jobs, the way we treat those around us, the way we set goals, and everything else.
Unbelievably far too many people live their lives like that, meandering around without really knowing why they exist. Year after year they wonder what life’s all about, with no idea of what God’s purpose is for their lives. However, the most basic question a person can ask themselves is, “What is the meaning of my life?”
But be careful. Jesus is not a means to an end; Jesus is the end. You don’t pursue Jesus to get stuff, you pursue Jesus because He is the infinitely greatest treasure in all existence. Salvation is not something you do, check off and then move on. It is the gateway to the goodness of God extended to us through Jesus Christ, and it is through Him you find meaning and purpose in life. As one pastor has said, “You never get beyond the gospel; you only grow deeper and deeper in an understanding of God’s grace extended to you through Christ.”
It is safe to say that everyone wants to be happy and people try many ways to be happy by looking for happiness in possessions, pleasure or power. But real happiness comes from understanding your purpose in life, and finding that purpose is not as difficult as you might think. In a nutshell, God created us to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. The Bible says that, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Couple that verse with what Jesus also says in John 10:10: “I have come in order that you might have life - life in all its fullness!”
It is that discipleship – the growing deeper in and understanding of God’s grace – that keeps you from meandering life’s course and helps direct you to God’s purpose in your life. — Scott Lehman is President of In His Grip Golf Ministry and author of the popular book, “More than a Game.” Scott and his family live in Thompson Station, Tenn.

Are We Ready? Preparing for Easter, C. S. Lewis I’m pretty sure that if I’d met John the Baptist on the banks of the Jordan River, I would have dismissed him as a deranged zealot. Sensing my lack of enthusiasm for his style and lack of decorum, he would, no doubt, have pointed one of his honey-stained fingers at me and shouted strange admonishments about broods of vipers and fiery chaff, thus confirming my suspicions. He would have told me to repent, to make the path to my heart straight for the Lord. He would have urged me to step into the water and wash away my multitude of sins. “The Lord is coming,” he would say, and we should all be scared out of our minds. The weeks leading to Easter are an echo of John’s ministry. They are days of preparation, of making smooth the way of God. We reflect on the events before us; the heralds of a palm-waving crowd, the decisions being made for and against Jesus, the treachery of betrayal and the cruelty of a cross. As we near Holy Week and the celebration of an empty tomb, we must ask ourselves if we are truly ready to meet the risen Lord. Preparing for Easter (Harper One, $17.99), by C. S. Lewis, is a collection of devotions by one of the most influential Christian writers of the modern era. As we approach the defining days of Easter, books like Preparing for Easter
can serve as a guide to our own season of repentance and reflection. On Easter Sunday, we will once again encounter the risen Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. Are there things in our life that need to be set aside, priorities that need to be re-arranged, prayers that need to be said? Preparing for Easter is a collection of fifty readings compelling us to make straight the path of God. The cross and Easter are upon us, those great and terrible days of the Lord. The risen Messiah will soon stand before us. Are we ready? -Darrel Holcombe

Words That Matter I call it bread-crumbing. It’s a word I made up. It’s the way we tend to communicate with each other most often. It’s the way we speak in codes, hints, and facial expressions. We desperately want the other person to notice us, to know what we need, but we leave them only a thin trail of bread-crumbs to find us. When they fail to see the trail, or the sweep aside the breadcrumbs (saying to themselves, “Who left this laying here?!”), we feel hurt and abandoned. But there’s another way. In the same way, unless you use your tongue for intelligible speech, how will what is spoken be known? For you will be speaking into the air. (1 Cor. 14:9 NLT) In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul addresses the spiritual gifts of speaking in tongues and prophesy. I’m not going to get into all of that here, but I am going to pick up the heart of his message. It’s better to speak words that matter than words that don’t matter. I’m not sure why that’s so hard, but it is. We want to matter. Why can’t we use the words that lead us to it? What are you not saying that you really need to? When we finally get around to saying the words we need to say, we’re usually angry. Tired of our trail of bread-crumbs being ignored and not followed, we finally say the words we wanted to say all along. Only, by then we’re saying those words at full volume and drive the one we need further away from us instead of closer. As they walk away, we feel even more abandoned, hurt, and angry. We present our need as an attack, not an invitation. We turn to blame- “Why can’t you see
me?!” However, we never really revealed ourselves to them until now. And even if we do speak softly and in humility, if they don’t immediately respond in kind, we go immediately back to our anger. We’re a cactus screaming for a hug and can’t understand why they turn away. The truth is we’re scared. Scared of rejection. Scared of not mattering. Scared to open ourselves up to vulnerability. Except that’s where all the connection happens. We long for safety and security but want them to do all the work. Paul says it’s our job to create the context for change to happen. Paul said he would rather speak five words that matter than 10,000 that don’t (1 Cor. 14:19). What brings others to us is an invitation. Not a veiled invitation but a solid, clear invitation that holds the promise of connection. It says, “Here I am. This is something true about me. This is where I am. Where are you? What is that like for you? Can we talk about this?” That kind of communication leaves the bread-crumbs in the pantry, instead offers a steak dinner with the promise of desert. Who doesn’t want that? May you lean into vulnerability to reveal yourself to the one you long for. May you set aside your fear and desperation to speak words of truth, love, and invitation. — Aron Strong, LMFT, was a pastor for more than a decade before transitioning to professional counseling. He is the director of Pathways Counseling in Murfreesboro and writes daily devotionals at www.biblebreakfast.club.

Life’s True Purpose
MEET US BEFORE WE MEET YOU!
I am not a big believer of coincidences nor do I accept that our purpose is to “be” a Banker, Attorney, or Carpenter. “Who we are” goes far beyond “what we do” as an occupation. Through the faint glow of wisdom provided to me through my education, experience, and the discernment of Divine precepts, I have come to believe that we each have a destiny in this journey we call life. Our personal destiny is also intertwined with many others and as we live out our predetermined fate, at just the right time, we are introduced to certain people in specific location in our travels. The true purpose behind this meeting, though not clear or disclosed, may be to serve my needs or to benefit another but rest assured the reason or reasons will be fulfilled.

In this season of Thanks and Giving I want you to know that I appreciate you being a part of my life and I hope that I have justly fulfilled any and all purposes needed in your life. I pray that God continues to bless each of us in our own unique way and that I am always a positive influence in the lives of all who depend upon me. Please enjoy this poem and take a minute to share this message with those in your life. They will be happy that you did.
A Reason, a Season, or a Lifetime
"People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you figure out which one it is, you will know what to do for each person... "When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty; to provide you with guidance and support; to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. "Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on. "Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it. It is real. But only for a season. "LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant." — Unknown
