Nashville Christian Family ® exists to provide Christians and the community at large with ways to strengthen and grow as a part of the Middle Tennessee Christian Family. This local monthly publication is designed to promote positive living by sharing with readers of all ages relevant and timely news and information related to health, faith, parenting, youth, finances, Christian entertainment, missions, church leaders, and much more.

From the Publisher “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” Genesis 1:31 (NKJV) “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22 (NKJV) For me, September is one of a couple of “transitional” months during the year. The kids are back in school, Labor Day signals the end of summer vacations, daylight is growing shorter and another football season is getting underway. Yes, autumn and fall are in the air. One reason that I love this time of year is the beautiful changing of colors of the leaves on trees that will begin toward the end of the month. To me, the seasons serve as a strong reminder and example of the awesome and incomprehensible power of God through His creation and order of the universe and this earth that we inhabit. During fall and autumn I try to give thanks to God daily, not only for the literal beauty of the world we live in, but for Him blessing me by allowing me to be a part of and enjoy His creation. Sometimes we take for granted the beauty of creation. If that is the case, during the next few weeks, please make a special effort with yourself and your family to simply slow down and take time to enjoy the “beauty of creation” and give thanks to God, the creator of it all. Also, read Psalm 104 and Genesis in it’s entirety. Enjoy and appreciate what the Lord has made. “O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions—“ Psalm 104:24 (NKJV)

M ig ht y W om e n What a fitting ending to a perfect story! Well, no, it doesn’t end there. Mark adds more information: When [His disciples] heard that Jesus was alive and that [Mary of Magdala] had seen Him, they did not believe it. (16:11) Why not? They’ve known Mary’s deliverance and devotion and been recipients of her faithful service and support. They’ve heard Jesus teach His death, burial, and resurrection and speak up for women. Why do they not believe her message? Does Jesus have anything to say about their stubborn refusal to mature beyond deep-seated traditional thoughts? Mark answers: Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; He rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. (16:14) Jesus chastises them then gives them an assignment, too: Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creations. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (16:15) Think about their first-century culture with its entrenched attitudes toward women. Remember the disciples’ shock to see Jesus modeling and restoring freedoms, new ways, and new attitudes toward women. Consider how difficult it is to change embedded thoughts, customs, and behaviors; to be transformed by Jesus; and to renew the mind. Ponder how twenty-first century immoral culture denigrates women who denigrate themselves—women who will not prize their God-given value and purpose; women who sell themselves and their souls to fleshly, earthly pleasures; and women who fall under heavy abuse at the hands of others.

Mary’s story challenges heart, soul, and mind and perhaps yanks the willing out of preconceived notions about Jesus’ actions on behalf of women. Her story is our story. We may not have suffered seven evil spirits, but we suffer weak, human flesh. We may not have been the first to see the risen Lord, but we can see Him now. We may not have received the first missionary assignment from the risen Lord, but He gives us one now: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:1920) – Sheila Moss, teacher, speaker, and author of Living to Matter: Mothers, Singles, and the Weary and Broken

Welcome to the place where we gather from all walks of life, socio-economic backgrounds, religious affiliations and diverse cultures. The workplace - where the goal is to get the job done. We are in this together whether we like it or not. We are gathered to drive trucks, put products on shelves or advice others with life changing information. We sit at a desk, stand on an assembly line or run our mouths all day long trying to convince people to buy our products. We are overweight, hypersensitive or just a good old boy from the country who is not afraid to get his hands dirty. We come to work with people from Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jehovah witness or Mormon religious affiliations. Some are agnostic, even a few are atheistic when it comes to a relationship with God. You know what- It’s OK, relax and build a relationship with your co-workers. One thing that we all have in common is the fact that we were ALL created by God for God. It’s Ok

that an atheist does not believe or an agnostic does not care. Believe me when I say that you or I cannot change a person’s doctrinal or religious views. Relax with the fact that a co-worker has a totally different view about God than you do. ONLY God can change a person from the inside out! He knows who, when and what needs to be changed. He knows the heart and its intentions. Just love people right where they are in their faith and get to know the God of the Bible. The closer the walk that we have with Jesus, the greater He will use us to love people into His kingdom. Folks, the world we live in is very diverse and the word DIVERSITY should not scare the believer and divide. Diversity is Distinctive in nature. Keep in mind that I am not agreeing with the agnostic or the atheist I mentioned above. I disagree harshly with many. What I am saying is that God will deal with each individual based on what His word says. Not my opinion on what they should

be. Hebrews 4:12 says it best, “The Word of God is living and active, sharper than a two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. God will use you and I to reach people for His kingdom. The backgrounds and views of people never stopped our great God from busting through the false hope of our culture to a living hope in Jesus. He is in the business of changing lives for His glory each and every day. Live out your faith in front of people that you work with on a daily basis, don’t worry what they believe. Get into conversations that will be honoring to the God of the Bible. Allow God to use you in the work of sharing the hope of glory to those who will intently listen, hear and obey. — Tom Toner

The Final Three Things

P ar e nt “There are only three certainties in life; breathing, taxes, and death.” It was Ben Franklin who coined the phrase, “There are but two certainties in life, death and taxes.” He was a very intelligent man and I realize he was making a jab about the ongoing need of funding the government machine but in an effort to satisfy my craving for accuracy I purpose a third; the sustaining function that maintains life; breathing. There can be no life without the act of breathing.

I have watched four people pass away in my presence. Four times I felt a void develop as the person took their very final breath because we just expect that breathing will continue. However, that is not the case in the circle of life; we will all die. It is unavoidable truth so we should use the Wisdom of Three to be prepared for our final moment, regardless of when it is. Throughout our life we are, in essence, preparing for what is called by the Native Americans, “the final journey”. And I do believe, just as the Natives do, that it is a journey as our soul is eternal and upon death it is released from our physical body to travel to its next home. For the four people that I was with when they took their final breath, it was a very peaceful experience and I believe all four used the power of three to make that happen. They each had done three things before they died. They cleared their conscience through reconciliation, had a resolved calendar and they enjoyed a strong faith. Throughout our lives we are taught the importance of forgiveness. It is an ongoing fact that humans live a social existence and that we are a flawed species. In order to remain weaved into the fabric of our society; we must maintain a peaceful status with the community we live and work in. No matter how hard we try, we will do things which will require an act of forgiveness and once we are forgiven we can once more move on, feeling at peace with the person or group of people which we erred against. Since the “journey” of death takes us from this long established community of our lifetime, we feel the need to leave in good grace. We are also an organized race; we do not like to leave tasks undone, especially when it comes to those whom we love, care and respect. We even have a saying that supports this belief, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” This is very important when the items of attention, once resolved, will leave the loved ones in a better position. Once these chores have all been handles, we can finally “rest in peace”. Finally, they all shared a strong faith that the future was going to be better than the present. Think about any journey or any transition you have ever made. What made the leaving worth doing? It was the hope and belief that the next location would be better than where you were at the time. Without that faith we are left with fear. So let us live a life of preparation. We are all on our own individual journey but will eventual all cross that same ocean that we call death. Before we leave remember to “pack” reconciliation, resolve, and faith; it will make your transition a lot smoother. — Anthony “Tony” Boquet, the author of “The Bloodline of Wisdom, The Awakening of a Modern Solutionary”

What Is So Unique About

September? There’s something revolutionary about September. The beginning of the school year is all about change. Each new school year brings fresh beginnings, whether the important young person in your life is entering kindergarten or graduate school. Your hopes and visions for them are huge. Your heart leaps for what lies ahead. The words you whisper into their ears, as you wave goodbye on the first day of school, remind me of Dr. Seuss: “You’re off to great places; today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” As a mother and grandmother, I know all too well how we count down the days until our children are old enough for school. I counted the days before my daughter could start clarinet class. Before she tried out for the cheerleader squad. Before my son and daughter signed up for third year German. Or before my son was added to the varsity basketball team. Then, I counted down the days before they graduated from high school. Counted the days before college graduation. That big day—cap and gown time at the prestigious university we sweated them through. More important than counting down the days, however, is making every day count. What if we counted, instead of days, life’s little moments? The times we pause to pray for our child before he or she gets out of the car. Or when we emphasize, as we embrace them, how unique they are. I want to be the one who specializes in saying: “You are great. You are wonderful. There will never, ever be anyone else like you!” In our multi-generational family, we have an infant …eight months old. Plus a toddler…four years old. When I hold one or both of these little girls in my arms, I occasionally yearn to see their future. To know what’s ahead. But I am a natural worrier, which is never good. My worrying mind wonders: will they make the right choices? So then, I pray for them to be endlessly curious, to see possibilities in every situation. To be adventurous, brave and strong, facing whatever future lies ahead. Whatever words you choose, speak power into the lives of the children around you. Every day. Every chance you get. Tell them not to listen to any influence that places limits. My caution is this: refuse to listen to the voice that declares that’s impossible. You shouldn’t. Don’t. You mustn’t. You’ll never be. You can if you believe you can. September is an awesome time to tell a child so. Proclaim that each glittering moment in any bright and perfect day opens new possibilities for the dreams that have not yet come true.

Tackling Human Trafficking Locally and Beyond It’s been said that, “Life gives you a second chance and that chance is called tomorrow.” Perhaps, award-winning producer, Lisa Arnold and renowned actor, Alan Powell had this in mind while making the profoundly impactful film, Caged No More. Caged No More exposes the horrifying reality of one of the most profitable and fastest growing crimes: Human Trafficking. The film begins when a grandmother discovers her two granddaughters were kidnaped by their father and sold to settle his drug debt. The grandmother enlists the help of the girls’ uncle and his son (played by Powell) to rescue the teenagers. A global hunt ensues and the team is forced to enter the dark and dangerous world to bring the two girls to safety. Viewers walk away from the film educated about the atrocity of human trafficking but hopeful about what “tomorrow” can bring when people band together and help. The film stars Kevin Sorbo (God’s Not Dead), Emmy-award winner, Loretta Devine (The Carmichael Show), Powell (The Song), Cassidy Gifford (God’s Not Dead), and Debra Wilson (MADtv). It premiered at theaters in January and is now available on DVD. Nashville Christian Family magazine had a chance to catch up with Arnold and Powell to ask about the process of making the film and the impact it has had on their lives.

What prompted you to get involved with the film? 14

Nashville Christian Family

Arnold: I’ve dedicated my film career to creating movies that inspire, encourage, and challenge people. I believe in social justice, and when we see a segment of the population without a voice, we should all do something. I co-wrote Caged No More when I learned that human trafficking and sex slavery does not just exist overseas but right here in our backyards. Powell: I was aware human trafficking happened but had no idea it found a home in Middle Tenn., and more shockingly, Williamson County. I have three daughters, and the thought of them ever having to deal with such a nightmare encouraged me to take the role.

The film is rated PG13. How did you tackle such a tough topic yet make it accessible for families to view? Arnold: The film balances the horrors of sex trafficking with hope for restoration. My goal was to connect people to the cause, and I knew if I simply shocked them, my efforts would fail. People need to know that they can have a profound effect on saving lives lost to sex trafficking. Whether it’s volunteering, sharing information on social media, donating

www.ChristianFamilyNashville.com

money to recovery initiatives, or praying…there is a job for everyone. Powell: Every 30 seconds someone becomes a victim of human trafficking. When people grasp the magnitude of the problem, they can’t help but rise and join the fight. We’ve seen this time and again in Caged No More screenings across the country. Lisa (Arnold) did a great job creating a movie with mass-market appeal. Schools, businesses, and churches are hosting movie nights with Q & A sessions to make families aware of the issue. I am awed by the support the movie brings to the table.

What impact do you hope the film creates? Arnold: Beyond pornography churches do little talking about this issue. We could do so much more. Churches can lead the fight and raise great awareness. Youth Pastors can educate our kids on the dangers of trafficking. Women’s groups could rally around local organizations dedicated to recovery and reclamation. Trafficking victims need mentors and prayer warriors. We also need to pierce the hearts of men. This issue stops when demand stops. Churches can form men’s groups to discuss pornography, sex trafficking and the wake of destruction they cause. I want men to take control and hold each other accountable. I want women to bridge the gap between hurt and hope. Powell: I am incredibly bothered by the existence of this issue and have thought a great deal about it. I think it starts with educating our sons to respect women and esteem them as the precious people they are. It also requires us to teach our daughters that they have value beyond their physical attributes. I don’t think we will ever live in a world where innocent girls and boys are not preyed upon, but I do think we can encourage those who are working in the trenches to restore these lives. We can give our time, talent, and resources. We can educate ourselves, spread the word, and start a movement to stop the prevalence of sex trafficking.

What’s next for you? Arnold: Caged No More is the first of a trilogy related to the topic of human trafficking and its

survivors. The next film will highlight what happens to victims once they are rescued. The script is in development, and we are seeking financial backing for production. Powell: I’ve signed on to do all three films because I believe so deeply in what Lisa (Arnold) is working toward. As she preps for the next installment, I am busy working on a film I produced called,

The Reason, a story of childhood cancer and how tragedy impacts faith. Caged No More is available on DVD at Wal-mart, Amazon.com, and Christian bookstores everywhere.

A Look At Local Human Trafficking Sex trafficking is a tough topic. Truth be told, no one wants to talk about it and more often than not the issue gets buried beneath other societal ills. Why are we not talking about what has become one of our state’s top crimes? According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI) Director, Mark Gwyn, “Human trafficking and sex slavery in Tenn. is more common than previously believed possible. In fact, results show human trafficking is a larger problem in our state than gangs.” Just last month, a college football player, a truck driver, a student and a state IT specialist were among 41 arrested in a three-day operation combating sex and human trafficking in Nashville. Derri Smith, founder and executive director of End Slavery Tennessee (ESTN) can’t turn a blind eye to this crime. Since 2008 she has dedicated her life to eradicating human trafficking. What started as a grass roots effort has turned into management of a nationally recognized nonprofit geared to the recovery and reclamation of human trafficking victims. “In Tennessee 94 teens a month are deceived, tormented, and sold, usually for sex. With support we can end this nightmare,” Smith states. ESTN tackles the issue from rescue to recovery. The TBI named the nonprofit Middle Tennessee’s Single Point of Contact agency, which means they receive referrals of all victims and are responsible for providing a comprehensive array of services needed for healing. “New referrals come in almost daily, and it breaks my heart to know we are at capacity to serve these young girls. We get children of all ages entrusted to our care after having been sexually abused and exploited. In fact, our youngest victim is just 12 year’s old,” reports Smith. ESTN currently operates several safe houses around the greater Nashville area. They have about 800 active volunteers but last year trained 11,000 professionals and community members to identify victims and get them appropriate help. ESTN services include not only physical and emotional care but job skill training, educational tutoring, parenting classes, mentoring and more. To contact ESTN log onto www.endslaverytn.org. If you suspect a trafficking crime is occurring, you can report or get help by calling the Tennessee Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-855-55-TNHTH. In cases of an immediate emergency, contact your local police department or emergency number.

H ealthy L ivi ng GOD’S PLAN FOR SERVICE:

Being Relevant to Others

This month let’s talk about being relevant to others. The writer Pam Holloway once made the comment that “We become relevant in the lives of others when we learn about their interests, wants and needs.” Lucius Seneca, Roman stoic philosopher whose life coincided with the life of Jesus Christ, is credited with the statement: No man can live happily who regards himself alone, who turns everything to his own advantage. Thou must live for another if thou wishes to live for thyself. How many Christians suffer from too much month at the end of the money? How about the adult college student who battles with serious intimidation because they are the oldest one in their class, quite solicitous concerning student loans, and probably the most perplexing question, “Why didn’t I go to school prior to now? I’d like a share a couple of stanzas from Psalm 91 that I came across in Jentezen Franklin’s book,“Fear Fighters.” Franklin words it like this: “If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says God, “I will get you out of any trouble. I will give you the best of care if you will only get to know and trust me.” Did you get that? He promises to rescue us out of ANY trouble. All we have to do is know, trust and hang on for dear life to God. Amazing! As we mature in Christ, we gain clarity, assurance and what comfort we have in our Lord Jesus, our friend, protector, and provider. Yes friends, provider! Here are two powerful scriptures I stumbled upon. They will give you comfort and confidence. I know they sure help me. Isaiah 49:16 says, “See, I have you engraved on the palms of my hands.” (KJV) Finally, Proverbs 18:10 (KJV) clearly states, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower.” We serve a pretty awesome God, don’t we? So let’s give it up and over to Him with thanksgiving, praise and worship; KNOWING without doubt what a strong tower we have in our God the Almighty! — Tammy Leigh Merritt resides in Columbia, Tenn. with her kitty, Egypt. She enjoys studying, writing, and singing for God’s glory.

When you talk with another person, whether friend or a person you have just met, how much of that conversation is made up of you talking about you? Almost every person enjoys the circumstance when someone else shows an interest in him or her as a person. When you talk with this person you have the opportunity to engage them in talking about him or her. When you do this you will learn and find some things very interesting. If you insist in talking only about yourself, remember that you already know about yourself so you are not learning anything by just listening to yourself ramble on. We become more interesting to others when we learn from others and situations we encounter in life. Relevant means having interests in common with others as seen by them. Returning to Seneca’s advice, he said we need to get beyond turning “things to our own advantage” or focusing on ourselves in order to, as Seneca put it, “to live for thyself.” He is saying that real satisfaction in life does not come from concentrating upon oneself. Instead, he is saying that real satisfaction in life comes from living for others. This other-person centeredness can lead us to satisfaction that comes from seeing the life of another person enhanced by something we have done or said. Consider how others see you. Are you seen as an interesting person, a person who wants to help others, is interested in others? Others are more likely to seek you out as a friend if you have already shown an interest in them and others. The old adage is to have friends you must first be a friend. Seek out others who need a friend. Find a way to be seen by others as relevant to their lives. When others see you as relevant, opportunities for new relationships are created. Think about the many opportunities you have today to do something for another person or group. What are you going to do today to follow Seneca’s advice and be relevant to others, to do something for someone else? In what ways are you relevant in the lives of others? — Kenneth Oosting, PhD

Parents Who Ask the Right Questions When a child gets a bump or a bruise, it is usually pretty obvious. If a child is bleeding most parents can quickly diagnose the cause. They take the necessary action to correct the problem. However, some things are a little harder to see.

In elementary school, my youngest daughter liked to occasionally bring home a card. The school had a program providing cards for children to bring home and she was especially thoughtful. She was usually happy and loved to make people laugh. She still is quick with a joke. Sometimes she would take things a little far, so you couldn’t always tell when something was bothering her or if she was just being silly. If she only had a sign telling us what was wrong when it wasn't obvious. One day she brought home a card and it struck me as a little odd. I can't remember what it said. I just remember thinking, Huh! What's this all about? She didn't seem particularly bothered by anything. She said she had a great day at school. Still, the card made me pause. Here's the part that's difficult. She was seven years old. She could be overly dramatic at times. She still has moments where she tends toward the dramatic. All of those factors could have convinced me to just ignore the feeling I had in my gut. She was so young, she probably didn't even realize what the card said. Still, that nagging feeling wouldn't go away. I decided to talk to her about it. She told me about a situation at school that had bothered her a little more than she had let on. I dug a little deeper and got to the root of the problem. We discussed it, coming to what we both agreed to be the best solution. I could have ignored the situation hoping it would take care of itself. Whatever age your child might be, trust your instincts. Yes, teenagers may be a little harder to get information from. That is why maintaining open communication is so important. If you have questions, they should be asked no matter how much you trust your child. Even at the risk of embarrassment, ask them. Let them know that no matter the answer, you do and will continue to love them. Be prepared though. Some answers are tougher than others.

Sure, talking to your kids can be hard. There are some things a Band Aid or a kiss-to-make-it-feel-better can't fix. Sometimes, we have to go the extra mile and get beyond the normal exchanges of day-to-day life. It's worth the effort and your child will feel more loved in that moment than you can imagine. — Toby J. Swager is a husband, father, author of two books, and a pastor. God is Using Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church

to Change Lives All Around the World If you enter The Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church on a Sunday morning, Wednesday night, or come by in the summer when Camp SummerSign is taking place, you’ll see adults, teenagers, and children connecting through a common language, learning about Christ and His love, and encouraging one another. What may not be apparent to you, is that this remarkable community that is making a difference in Deaf communities here in Middle Tennessee and the whole world. Sometimes it’s impossible to anticipate all that God will do when His people faithfully step out and obey His calling. One small step of obedience can lead to an internal impact in the lives of countless people. That’s exactly what has happened as the result of the faithfulness of those who felt called to begin a Deaf ministry at Brentwood Baptist Church over 20 years ago. The Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church has officially been a congregation since 1995, but the roots of this church began to grow much earlier. In 1984, Betty Stirsman, an active member of Brentwood Baptist, was passionate about beginning an interpretive ministry even though at the time, there wasn’t anyone at Brentwood Baptist Church who was Deaf. She began interpreting in the services, believing that if the church began this ministry, Deaf people would come. By 1986, a Deaf Sunday School class had formed and steps were taken toward beginning a Deaf church.

cessible to you in a way you understand and always being the last to learn urgent news. Imagine not even having the most valuable of all books—the Word of God—available in your own language. That’s exactly what the Deaf community, both here in Middle Tennessee and around the world, experiences on a daily basis. Aric Randolph, Deaf Church Minister

On May 1, 1995, the Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church was officially launched and countless lives have been impacted since that day. Today, the Deaf Church is leading the way in Deaf ministry initiatives worldwide.

The Desperate Need

The Deaf is the largest unreached people group in the world. According to the International Mission Board (IMB), there are 36 million culturally Deaf people worldwide. By 2050, that number will increase to 49 million. There are 212 people groups, and all of them are “unreached” with the gospel (less than 2% Deaf Go Bible App are evangelical). There are over 200 different sign languages used around the world, but none of them have the Bible available in their heart language. Imagine if no one knew how to communicate with you effectively, they didn’t understand your heart language. Instead, you were expected to adapt to their way of communicating because others would not take the time to learn the way you best communicate. Imagine not having important details easily ac-

It is for this reason that the Deaf Church is continually becoming more outward focused toward reaching the Deaf in Middle Tennessee and around the world. This happens through ministries like Camp SummerSign, participation in events in the Deaf community around Middle Tennessee, and more.

The Impact of Camp SummerSign

One of the most significant ministries within the Deaf Church is Camp SummerSign, which began in 1997. For 8 weeks every summer, Deaf children and teenagers, as well as hearing children and teenagers who have Deaf siblings or parents, spend their days learning valuable skills like ASL, problem solving, teamwork, decision-making, and so much more. Participants are also involved in fun field trips including laser tag, volleyball, creating and producing movies, horseback riding, and visiting the Deaf Library in Nashville. Camp SummerSign has been life changing for many. The love and support of the staff makes a significant difference in the life of each person who comes through the door. By the end of the 2016 summer, 12 decisions for Christ were made and 4 teenagers were baptized at Camp SummerSign. Visit brentwooddeaf. org or deafgonow.com for more information. — Tessa Morrell

Hunger is Here

MEET US BEFORE WE MEET YOU!

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.” – Matthew 25: 35-36 It’s not unusual to see Lee Company vans moving down the road; the company has been serving our community for decades. However, in August and September, those vans – and the pros inside them – are doing something very special. They’re helping us feed the hungry.

Serving the Greater Nashville area since 2001 As part of its annual participation in the Vans4Cans program, Lee Company is collecting canned goods and other nonperishable food items at every service call. Donations can also be made at any Lee Company office. Food donations in Nashville support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. “Second Harvest recently shared a shocking statistic with us: 1 in 5 children in Middle Tennessee struggles with hunger every day,” says Dan Kalman, senior vice president of home services at Lee Company. “It is hard to imagine that statistic when we look into our own cabinets and can’t decide what we will eat.” Kalman says annual customer support for Vans4Cans helps Lee Company collect thousands of pounds of food to feed the hungry. He also says the program is a logical tie to the Lee Company mission. “We’re here to create a workplace where employees can thrive, while we provide innovative solutions to meet customer needs,” Kalman says. “Those needs extend beyond home services and facilities solutions. No one in our community should have to wonder how they’re going to feed their kids. Using our vans as a contribution channel allows people to help without even leaving their house.” Learn more at: www.leecompany.com/vans4cans

M on ey M at te r s Dear Dave, What is your opinion on paying cash for a “tiny house”?

— Wes

Dear Wes, This may be a really un-hip or un-cool thing to say, but I wouldn’t buy a tiny house at all. Paying cash for something like that might make the mover smarter, but that still doesn’t mean it’s a smart choice. Now, don’t take what I’m saying the wrong way. I don’t have a problem with people who build tiny houses or buy them. My problem with these things is that there’s no track record on them. There’s also a pretty good chance they’re going to be just a fad. Another problem is that you’d have a really small market when it comes time to sell your tiny house. In other words, they probably won’t go up in value like a traditional home. They may actually lose value over the years. There’s a thing in economics called the supply-demand curve, and from what I’ve seen tiny houses also have a tiny demand and pretty narrow market appeal. Their appeal seems to be mostly for early adopters and people who think they’ll never be able to afford a house. That means they’re not going to have broad appeal when you get ready to sell them, either. And that creates a problem. I could be wrong, though. I mean, if enough people buy tiny houses and they become a real part of our culture, then maybe they’ll do okay. But right now it’s an unproven product line and an unproven concept. So I wouldn’t buy a tiny house. Honestly, I wouldn’t even buy one at half of its current value because I’d be afraid it would drop to a fourth of its value. There’s just no proven record at this point of these things going up in value.

Dear Dave, My husband and I had to rent a car on a recent trip to Florida. When we tried to pay with our debit card, the attendant told us he would have to pull our credit report if we used debit instead of credit. He said all rental car companies operate that way, because there was concern about people stealing the cars and closing their checking accounts. Is this true? We’re trying to take control of our money using your plan, and we don’t want to get a credit card if we don’t have to. — Michelle Dear Michelle, No, it’s not true that all rental car companies operate that way. I have a debit card I use to rent cars everywhere I go, and I’ve never experienced anything like that. There still may be a few of the smaller rental car companies that don’t take debit cards, but him telling you credit cards are the only way anyone rents a car without a big credit check hassle is a bunch of hooey! When you’re setting up your reservation in the future, verify in advance that you’re dealing with a company that accepts debit cards and that there are no ridiculous strings attached. Then, if you don’t like the terms and conditions, go to another rental company. But don’t take a chance on wrecking your total money makeover by running out to get a credit card for something silly. Has something in the magazine or something you have discussed with someone or some thoughts that you have had or something that you have heard, brought you to a point of realizing that you want and need to know Christ in the truest and personal sense?

If so, below is a simple outline for someone of any age who is not a Believer to act on their desire to accept Jesus Christ into their heart as their Savior. God’s Plan of Salvation God created us to honor and serve Him Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist[b] and were created Each of us has sinned against God Romans 3:10: As it is written, “There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sin Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We each must accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior Romans 10:9: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:13: For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God and Heaven Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Good works cannot ever earn God’s forgiveness and Salvation Titus 3:5: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. God loves each of us John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

To accept Christ into your heart and life, pray a simple prayer along these lines - “Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sins. I know that Jesus died for my sins and the sins of the world. Right now, I ask Jesus into my heart and receive Him as my personal Savior. Forgive me of my sins, thank you for saving me through the blood of Jesus. Please Lord, help me live for you. In Jesus name, amen.” All scriptures are taken from The New King James Version of the Holy Bible.

Get in the Game and Off the Porch There’s an old expression that says, “If you can’t run with the big dogs stay on the porch.” A translation might be, “If you aren’t going to participate in life then you might as well be a spectator.” But seriously, is that the life you want to live? Is that the life God wants you to live?

is you, c’mon, grab your clubs, duck under the ropes and let’s play this game called life under the leadership of Jesus.

I’ve had the chance to be inside the ropes as a caddie for professional golfer Zach Johnson. Although I’ve been a spectator at dozens of professional tournaments, there is nothing like being inside the ropes in the middle of the action. The adrenaline just being a caddie at a pro-am was amazing. However, the ultimate is being a player. Scott caddying for Zach Johnson in the 2013 British Open

It’s like that in life. God designed us to be playChampion. ers. Life, and especially the Christian life, isn't lived outside the ropes. To fully participate in the Christian life, you need to be all in.

Unfortunately, some who aren’t sitting on the porch are trying to slip one foot into the game while also trying to stand on the sidelines. They say and do Christian things but their Christianity tends to linger in the theoretical. If this

This reproduction of Noah's Ark is a whopping 510 feet long and 85 feet wide, utilizing 3.1 million board feet of lumber. I plan on making the trip up there to see it shortly. As soon as this tourist destination opened, there was controversy. Some protesters were featured in the news media proclaiming that Christians "needed to open their eyes to the human devastation going on outside the Ark -- nothing short of genocide." Their viewpoint is that this whole "myth" would have been a horrible tragedy. All those people drowning outside the Ark is characterized as a crime of genocide committed by a hateful God. Since Christians believe that "God is love," how could we possible believe this "myth"? No mention is made that these people were a violent group, constantly filled with wickedness and evil, and that God's heart was actually "filled with pain" over this fact (Gen. 6:5-6). But the divergent views between the skeptics and believers actually begins at a much more foundational level than the story of Noah's Ark. The materialistic, humanistic, secular view of humanity is that "we only go around once" -- in other words, there is no afterlife. Humans came into being through

evolutionary accident; physical death is the end of the person, a tragedy in itself, amplified by multitudes of people dying together. The Christian viewpoint is that God alone created human life "in the beginning." He created each one of us individually from a single cell in our mother's wombs. He alone has the power to recreate our lives on the other side of physical death to stand before Him at a final judgment determining our eternal destiny. Therefore God alone is justified in ending a human life physically on this earth in His timing and will to "call us home" to face Him. Humans do not have that power -- for us to take the life of another human is murder, unless in self-defense. Physical death for the Christian is a joyous "homecoming"; for those who reject Jesus Christ as their Savior, it is the ultimate tragedy -- eternal separation from a loving God; judgment; eternal punishment. I find it interesting that the skeptic's view of the Flood "myth" being a horrible tragedy parallels

precisely the Christian view of it being a tragedy for unbelievers only. We have the choice between future tragedy or blessed hope. This supposedly "hateful God" gave His only Son to be cruelly mistreated, tortured, and crucified for humanity's sins to provide an avenue for that "blessed hope" at the end of our individual lives. This only makes sense with the "eternal" perspective -- to the secular materialist, it is utter foolishness (1 Cor. 2:14). Would you be willing to give your only son to a murderous people? Is your view of God one of absolute love, or unfair discriminatory hate? Is your view temporal or eternal? — Stephen Rowland is chaplain for the Knights For Christ (Columbia) of the Christian Motorcyclists Association
