Regarding Godly Fathers, Martin Luther said, “Keep an apple beside the rod to give the child when he does well.” Discipline must be exercised with watchful care and constant training with much prayer. Chastening, discipline, and counsel by the Word of God, giving both reproof and encouragement, is at the core of “admonition.” But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, ………… But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. (Joshua 24:15 NIV) He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. (Proverbs 14:26 NIV) Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6 NIV) As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. (Psalm 103:13 NIV) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4 NLT) Therefore an overseer (Father) must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? (1Timothy 3:2 - 5) There are many outstanding Scriptures that reference Fathers in one way or the other. The ones above are some that I have found valuable and helpful over the years. On this Father’s Day, we should honor not only our earthly Father’s, but our Heavenly Father as well.

I love this time of year; God’s beautiful scenery is waking up from a winter’s sleep. It’s also the end of the school year, which means summer break. For some moms, this year will have a different meaning - graduation – which can be bittersweet. Whether it’s the end of kindergarten or college, that usually means a new season in life. As a stay at home mom, when our youngest child entered kindergarten, I asked myself, “What am I going to do all day?” It took a few days, but by the end of the week it wasn’t so bad. But when that child graduated high school, my same question was a bit scarier. I reminded myself that after graduation I would be on summer break…forever. Who doesn’t want that? Being a mother of four, the school years had been long. I was ready for the break, but sad to see our children’s school years come to an end. Unlike my husband, I now needed something to fill my days, something with meaning. Once fall came, it became real to me. I didn’t have to get anyone up and off to school, nor watch the clock for their return. Instead, I was helping our youngest pack for college, and yes, you guessed it: another new season in my life. Since this was our youngest, it hit me a little harder, and like with our other children going to college, there were tears and a few sad days. I cannot leave my husband out of this experience, it was new for him as well, but it seemed to be an easier transition for him.

If you are entering this type of season and are wondering, what am I going to do now, remember, our mothers survived, and so will we. Be prepared; there will be tears at that graduation ceremony when you see your baby in their cap and gown, but that’s ok, you’re the momma, you’re allowed. What’s a mom to do when faced with her child entering college or kindergarten? I suggest, pray daily for that child, and for your new phase in life. For some, it’s the perfect time to get back in the work world. Others go back to school and finish that degree they put on hold to raise their children. There are Bible studies and church activities, and let’s not forget shopping and lunch with your bestie. The Lord has given each of us certain things to do at certain times in our lives; as the clock ticks and the pages fly off the calendar, our jobs and responsibilities change. But we’re not finished; we have lots of life to live. Just because our children are leaving the nest shouldn’t mean they are out of our lives. There are many ways to stay connected. As our children grow older, they will see mom and dad are important people to have in their lives and thus another season begins. — Reba Stanley www.rebastanley.com

Nashville First Church of the Nazarene was founded on May 14, 1898 under the direction of Rev. J.O. McClurkan with a strong mission to serve the poor, reach the lost, and call believers to a life-style of ‘holy living’. Through the efforts of the church, organizations such as Trevecca Nazarene University were begun to meet educational needs of the community and combat social issues of poverty. Much emphasis was also placed on Missions, as they sent and funded hundreds of missionaries around the world over the years. Nashville First Church of the Nazarene is located on the corner of 5th Street and Woodland Street in East
After over 100 years of history, Nashville First Church of the Nashville. Nazarene still carries that DNA through today’s contexts. Now on the corner of 5th Street and Woodland Street in East Nashville, the church seeks to be ‘East Nashville’s Community Church’, offering affordable sports and arts programs through Naz Rec and Naz Arts to community families. The church hosts community events such as Easter Eggstravaganza in East Park and Fall Fest in the Russell Street Parking Lot. Nashville First also maintains a passion for world missions through partnerships with Haiti and Kenya. Several wells have been built in Haiti and there is an ongoing project of building a medical clinic in Perneir II. Efforts have been made to combat ‘Gender-based Violence’ in Kenya, Africa by providing educational resources, trainings, and agricultural innovations to Kenyan leaders.
Another core value of the church is its diversity as a part of the call to usher in the kingdom of heaven. They host 5 different congregations every Sunday: • Celebration Service at 9:00am – a welcoming, traditional service with choir and orchestra. • Haitian Worship at 10:00am – services in Creole and translated into English • African Worship at 10:00am – the newest congregation begun last year for the African Refugee population in Nashville, primary language is Swahili.
• •
The Branch at 11:00am – a smaller, more contemporary congregation with worship bands and small group gatherings. Emmaus Fellowship at 5:00pm – a meal and fellowship service for the Nashville homeless and underprivileged.
Nashville First Church of the Nazarene seeks to live out the call of Christ to give of themselves in service to others through their partnerships with such organizations as The Next Door, Men of Valor, ELL Classes, Cheryl’s List, Room at the Inn, Open Table, and World Relief. The church also seeks to connect believers with one another through discipleship and biblical study. They host small groups and Sunday School classes every Sunday, and biblical and interest-oriented electives on Wednesday nights. Nashville First Church of the Nazarene’s mission is: To know the transforming Christ and be found faithful in our generation. The vision is: To receive the life of Christ, to share his life together, and to extend his life to others with passion. Your home is invaluable. So is our home maintenance.
Do you know where you’re headed? Do you have a plan to get there? You'll never reach your destination if you don't take the first step! Everything we attempt in life requires planning. No matter your age, a plan is necessary to achieve whatever goal you set. Maybe your goal is to write a book or to be a better parent. The only way to reach that goal is to strategically plan a course to accomplish the desired result. You have to begin to begin. Take a small step forward today. Don’t wait until tomorrow. The things we plan to start tomorrow become the regrets we face later in life. Chinese philosopher Laozi said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." What is the first step? Write out a goal and then, ACT on it. Planning is pointless without action to put the plan in motion. Don't bury the plan hoping that it will happen "in time." ACT! That single action puts things in motion. Author Katherine Anne Porter said, "I am appalled at the aimlessness of most people's lives. Fifty percent don't pay any attention to where they are going; forty percent are undecided and will go in any direction. Only ten percent know what they want, and even all of them don't go toward it." Most people get caught up in the busyness of life. They feel helpless to change their situation so they drudge ahead through the same routine without hope of accomplishing the things about which they used to be most passionate. The person who aspires to write a book will only dream about it until they take pen to paper and begin to write. (Or put hands to the keyboard!) Many people never start toward a goal because they don’t know where to begin. One sentence on paper is closer than an entire book written in the mind. The idea is to begin. Start writing. It may never go any further but it is necessary to achieve the goal. The parent who struggles with their child desires a strong relationship throughout their child’s life. It takes time to build the foundation for that strong relationship. So look at your calendar and plan time now! Intentional time is more valuable than passive time. A child, from birth throughout college and beyond needs a parent to focus on and encourage them. Focused activity doesn’t just happen! It requires a plan and then setting that plan into action. Goals are necessary to achieve a desired result in every area of life, be it relationships, dreams, or career aspirations. If you aren’t planning to achieve the next goal and putting action to the plan, you will not arrive at the desired result. An object at rest stays at rest, but even the slightest motion has the power to bring great change. Once it has begun, it is nearly impossible to stop. God's plan for your life requires your action.Pray, plan, and act upon that plan. That is the only way to get to the destination! — Toby J. He never had children but has helped parent over 300 young men from all over the country. With Father’s Day around the corner, Narrow Gate Foundation founder, Bill Spencer, has a great deal to celebrate.
Bill Spencer teaching Bible study to Narrow Gate students
For over 12 years, young men ages 18-25 have flocked to Narrow Gate Lodge, the home of Bill and Stacy Spencer, to discover their passion and purpose in life. Some come from broken homes, others from intact families. Some know the love of the Lord, others doubt His existence. Some have troubled pasts and others have never wandered far off course. What they all share, however, is a deep desire to understand their identity. With mixed messages coming from well meaning family members, teachers, and even pastors, these young men struggle to answer two basic questions,“Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” While society hails earning potential and self-gratifying consumerism, Spencer shows men another way. “Our society cripples teenage boys,” explains Spencer. “We’ve designed a culture that perpetuates play and selfishness. These mindsets destroy any hope of thriving marriages, families, and even business relationships. The guys that come to Narrow Gate are confused about their role as men and what’s expected of them because they’ve never been introduced to the idea that adult life is not based in consumer relationship. Rather, the truest joy of adulthood comes from loving relationships based in a posture of chosen selflessness.” Spencer and his team help young men foster attitudes of contentment, service, and commitment despite cost, dedication to Christ, and respect for others. In the process of self-discovery each student experiences the love of a father, in Bill Spencer, and a renewed relationship with their heavenly father in Christ. Narrow Gate students enjoy an eight-month journey that includes adventure, community service projects, personal discipleship, and intensive Bible study. While young men are discovering new directions in life, Spencer and his team work concurrently with parents, siblings, friends, and supporters to ensure what’s gained at Narrow Gate is supported at home. Does their mission work? Consider Scott Davis. Eight years ago Davis came to Narrow Gate seeking a purpose in life that had eluded him for 23 years. He was raised in a loving home, attended college in Wisconsin where he received his degree in Business Finance and even had plans for marriage. But when the relationship crumbled and work became drudgery, Davis sought solace in places that could not provide sustainable joy. The pursuit of pleas-
Bill Spencer with a few Narrow Gate alumni.
ure began to take its toll on the disciplines of adult life. “I knew I was searching for something that would add real contentment to my life. I hadn’t found it in work, relationships, parties, or education and I knew some people who had experienced real change at Narrow Gate. I didn’t have a clue what they had found but whatever they discovered, I wanted it.” Today Davis is happily married with children of his own. Scott serves in an executive role at Tennessee Contractors as a land developer. With an impressive 80+% graduation rate, Narrow Gate Lodge is celebrating over 12 years of service and countless hours of loving young men to Christ. Graduates have gone on to become ministers, missionaries, businessmen, college graduates, fathers and husbands. The true effect of Narrow Gate will be fully known as these young men become more prominent leaders in society but until then, one thing is sure, each Narrow Gate student knows the love of a Father. Narrow Gate Lodge is an entity of Narrow Gate Foundation, located just outside of Nashville, TN. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, inspiring and empowering Christian young men. Fifty three days ago their Teacher was celebrating Passover with them. Since then, they have been scared to go out in public but with good reason. They witnessed him being beaten then crucified, dying a terrible death; but then he rose from the dead, appeared to them out of thin air, physically ascended into heaven, and now on the Feast of Shavuot, they all received what they believe is the Holy Spirit. Their fear is miraculously gone.
Just as the grains were harvested to go out to the people as food, the Good News had to go out to the world from Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. In opposition to the sacrificial ritual of the Judeans, the Good News of Jesus is a world based on compassion, mercy, forgiveness, love, and prayer. A community in which God can be understood as “Abba/Father/daddy” a personal close God. What a Change!
The Apostles burst out of their locked room and run out into the crowded city streets filled with Jews from throughout the region, most already having the attitude that Galileans are essentially “hicks’, “stupid”, “crass”. It is early in the morning; of course they must be drunk, why else would they be shouting with joy? But wait…the foreigners all understand what these local people are saying. How can this be?
“What happened to the apostles and disciples?” “What caused them to change?” It is clear that something happened to them, causing them to come out of hiding, take to the highways and byways to preach by word and example the teaching of Jesus and not just to the Jews but to the entire world His message of love.
Look, we have Peter the fisherman taking center stage like a fearless leader. The same Peter who denied Jesus three times out of fear; the same Peter who begged Jesus not to go to Jerusalem for fear of injury; the same Peter who was asked to step onto the water and then doubted through fear. Now, he is the leader of the Faith, the spokesperson for this new Judaism. Only God knows where this movement will go but without doubt, something has changed. How could this have happened? Pentecost for Jews was/is the celebration called Shavuot; “The feast of Weeks” which began with the harvesting of the barley during the Passover and ended with the harvesting of the wheat, the last cereal to ripen, at Pentecost. It is celebrated 50 days after Easter (interestingly it also comes ten days after Ascension Thursday which is 40 days after Easter).
It was not perfect at first. Peter had to experience a divine intervention before he accepted that everyone is equal. The Pentecostal movement within Christianity emphasizes a direct personal experience with God. While many disagree with the Pentecostal/Charismatic movements, the reality is that the Spirit of God has been seen to interfere in the world and rise up leaders to renew our faith in the goodness of humanity. If this is my last post, I want all to know there was only one purpose for all that I have written; to have made a positive difference in the lives of others. — Anthony "Tony" Boquet, A Modern Solutionary and author of "The Bloodline of Wisdom, The Awakening of a Modern Solutionary".

Is It Time To Cut The Cord/Cable? For most Americans, TV is part of everyday life. TVs are everywhere we go. We wake up with a TV, we go to work and see TVs, we go to a coffee shop and we see a TV. Let’s face it, it’s part of our culture. And our culture seems to be craving more and more TV. How many channels do you get? But what if I told you it was time to ‘cut the cable’? Could you do it? What if you could use technology to drop your TV expense from $200+ per month to merely $85 or in some cases even less? What would you spend the extra money on? Most homes today have Cable or Satellite and use fancy boxes with DVR built in and hard drives that store hundreds of hours of shows. The companies that sell TV offer hundreds of channels that cover every possible topic we could ever want. And for a premium. If you have a house with 3 TVs you can easily pay $200, $225 maybe even $300 per month for all the channels and devices.
you can find the channels you really watch and get rid of the ones you don’t. You can throw out the DVR and use the on demand capabilities of tiny little computers attached to your TV to get the same results at a fraction of the cost. So if you currently pay $175 per month for Cable or Satellite and we can show you a way to cut that cost to $100 per month that saves you $900 per year. What vacation will you go on instead of paying for 250 channels that you never watch?
Technology today can replace these expensive devices and reduce the channels of ‘must see TV’ to a point where you can put some of that money back into your pocket. With devices such as AppleTV® and Roku® you can turn any TV into a smart TV and stream your ‘must see’ list for much less.
Take away the money and let’s look at our relationships? Would you spend more time with your family watching shows that really matter? Maybe. Would you you spend less time surfing the 250 channels and talk to you husband or wife more? Maybe. Technology, when used for good, can be a marvelous thing!
With applications and services like Netflix®, Hulu®, Sling® and many others

The Importance of the Bible
JULY 2015 Be Confident in Who God Made You to Be:
Duck Dynasty’s Sadie Robertson
Sadie Robertson is not your average young adult. Circumstance and creativity launched her from a modest life as a teen to an Sadie Robertson internationally known TV star, motivational speaker, author, and businesswoman. The daughter of Korie and Willie Robertson, first found the spotlight on the TV hit, Duck Dynasty. Not long after that she collaborated with fashion designer, Sherri Hill, on a line of dresses and competed on Season 19 of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars. Her book, Live Original: How the Duck Commander Teen Keeps It Real and Stays True to Her Values, details the principles that lead her to think happy, be happy and dream big. And earlier this year she launched a line of inspirational greeting cards and back-to-school products to make sharing faith easy.
DUCK DYNASTY’S
Best known for her tagline, “Live Original,” Robertson says to live original simply means being who God called you to be with confidence. “When I was young I had this girl who kind of bullied me and it really discouraged me so I wrote a Bible verse on my dry erase board. It is still there today. Hebrews 10:35 states, …so then do not lose your confident trust in the Lord, for it will be richly rewarded. I read that verse every day for years and nothing happened until after six months of reading it I asked myself, ‘What does this

mean and how can I put this into my life?’ When I began to apply it to my life I realized it’s not about being confident in yourself—it’s about being confident in who God made you to be—that’s when it all turned around.” Spending most of her summers busy with Christian camps and mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Robertson says it is easy to identify as a Christian but not always easy live out her faith. “Something about being a Christian is you never stop learning and you never stop growing. It’s a continual thing. You take two steps forward and one step back sometimes, and that’s just how the Christian walk goes,” she says. “Recently in my life I’ve been learning that the more you talk to God and the more you allow God in, the more it’s going to come out.” Sharing her faith has become an integral part of Robertson’s life. She has teamed up with DaySpring to release her own line of greeting cards and school supplies with an inspirational message. The spiral notebooks, threering binders, locker decorations, pocket folders and Scripture cards display messages like “Let your smile change the world.” “Thank you God for unfailing love.” and “Think happy, be happy.” “I think it’s going to do great, not just because it’s cute. It shares a message. Sometimes at school you don’t know how to share your faith. It can get awkward at times because you get shy. But having these things is kind of like a start to a conversation.” As Robertson looks to the future for more opportunities as a speaker and entrepreneur she says there are two key ways kids and teens can follow her lead and Live Original. “Number one, just because the crowd isn’t doing it does not mean it isn’t cool. The crowd may be doing one thing or saying one thing, but it doesn’t make you weird to do something else. That just makes you original. You can be you.” Secondly, expect trials. Because living original can be hard. “Even if you are doing what’s right, there are going to be days where you don’t want to do it because nobody else is doing it. But trust God because in the long run it’s definitely going to be worth it.” — Camille Platt

AUGUST 2015 True Conqueror
Kevin Sorbo “God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way.” – Unknown
Looking at Kevin Sorbo’s credits—actor, producer, writer, director, and star of over 45 movies in the last nine years—you might think he has always lived a charmed life. He is handsome, strong, talented, and intelligent. He has a beautiful wife, Sam, and three wonderful children. But, life is not a fairytale and no one knows that better than Kevin.
God is NOT Dead
Kevin may have fought monsters and evil warlords in his role for Hercules, but it was a health crisis, an aneurysm and three strokes, that led him into a real-life battle . With God’s help, true courage, and great strength of character, he conquered and became even stronger. “I’m more patient now and I appreciate each day I have,” he says. “We think we are in control, but we are not.” Voice of Caution At the time of the strokes, Kevin was in his 30s and in the best shape of his life. He was filming Hercules and hitting the gym daily for strenuous twohour workouts. He had noticed intermittent tingling and pain in his left

Harry Connick Jr. GOD’S LOVE is Enough
Finding Faith in the Great Comforter
After his mother died following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer, Harry Connick Jr. found comfort in his father’s Catholic faith. Home from the hospital for final days, 13 year old ConHARRY CONNICK, JR. her nick didn’t quite understand that Relies on Christ in his mother’s life was coming to a Career & Life close. In fact, the day she died, he heard the news during intermission of one of his recitals. Surrounded by his father’s extended family, all dedicated Catholics, he found himself deeply influenced by their beliefs. “I don’t think it’s any coincidence that I joined the Catholic faith after my mother died. She was no longer there and the only thing I had left was my father and his faith, which proved to be very comforting to him,” Connick remembers. “I desperately wanted to be a part of that.” Confirmed and baptized at age 14 while a student at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, Connick says he had not made a commitment to faith before then because his mother was a Jew, and she wanted her children to decide on religion for themselves. “My father would have loved to have baptized me and my sister when we were infants, but my mother wanted us to decide for ourselves, and that’s what ended up happening,” he says. “It was an interesting journey for me because I had my mother’s perspective, which was quite
arm and hand for several months but when things worsened, he consulted his physician who suggested a biopsy. Rather than undergo surgery, Kevin say his chiropractor. This choice changed everything for Kevin.. As he tells it, while the chiropractor massaged his neck he twice heard a voice speak, “Don’t let him crack your neck.” “I was arguing with this voice in my head,” he says, “then, sure enough he [chiropractor] cracked my neck.” Within minutes, Kevin’s vision blurred; he felt confused and this was the start of his first stroke. His wife rushed him to the hospital. Later, they learned that he suffered three strokes and an aneurysm in his shoulder ruptured when his neck was cracked. He reflects that it was God’s voice he heard cautioning him that day. “I learned that I should listen to that voice,” Kevin admits. Doctors helped save his life, but it was only the beginning of a three-year struggle. “There was this noise in my head, nausea, constant vertigo that made me feel as if I was falling backward all the time, and migraines. It was rough,” Kevin recalls. During this challenging time, Kevin’s faith and support from Sam helped him through dark days. Positive Messages Today, Kevin is well and continues to entertain audiences. He is not afraid to use his talents to share his faith. Recently, he played a domineering atheist professor in the movie “God’s Not Dead.” The film’s message, affirming God’s existence and the importance of belief, resonated with him. Kevin is still a fighter…whether pushing for better opportunities for disadvantaged kids or working to be the best dad and husband,. As he reflects on his brush with death he is still able to say: “This is the message; this was something that I needed to go through in order to grow.” — Peg Carmack Short different from my father’s, although I will say that my mother probably knew more about the Bible and the Catholic faith than most Catholics do.” Raised in New Orleans, Connick says his parents encouraged not only his spiritual growth but his passion for music. “My parents loved music and would take me and my sister to hear live music quite often,” remembers Connick, who by age nine had recorded multiple albums at home. He moved to New York City at age 19 and was dubbed, “The next Frank Sinatra” after Tony Bennett heard him play at the Algonquin Hotel. His big break followed in 1989 when he was hired to record the soundtrack for, “When Harry Met Sally.” Connick recently released a new album, That Would Be, that reveals his more personal side, who says he has changed the most as a writer and performer over the years in his ability to be more autobiographical. It took time to find a balance of using his personal joy and pain in his writing without revealing too many intimate details. “I’m a little bit of a late bloomer in terms of revealing my personal experience in songs. As I’ve gotten older I’ve gained perspective in terms of articulating things in various degrees. I don’t necessarily have to bare my soul in every possible way.” Connick says when asked what advice he would give youth entering the entertainment field he suggests that if someone is lucky enough to be given a set of values, they can and should be drawn upon at any time. “It’s not something you necessarily have to abandon in times of pressure or temptation. It’s easy to act with haste and impulsivity. It’s a little bit harder to take a moment in a particular situation and consider your own values,” he says. “Think about what’s important to you and apply that to the decision that you make in real time. If you’re presented with a situation or a crossroads that’s confusing, it’s always good if possible to take a step back and say wait. What do I believe? What’s important to me? How will this affect other people? And then make a decision.” — Camille Platt

This month our topic is changing your world. All of us are likely to have at least a few days when we take a deep breath and think I sure wish I could change the world I live in. But then our tomorrow does not see any change. We are likely to feel that to change our world would require something we cannot do or that we don’t have the time, energy or knowledge to accomplish a different world. To be sure, sometimes this is just frustration with the moment and we don’t really want to change very much of our world. But there are times when we clearly want to change our world and there are times when God is urging us to change our world. So how could we go about this change in the world in which we live everyday? First, we need to pray about this. Ask God to help you to clarify what about your world should change and what it should become. Second, use a concordance in your Bible to find the Scriptures that most directly apply to your situation and then read them. Write down your thoughts that come from your prayer and Bible reading. Third, contemplate your prayer and Bible study. Write down tentative conclusions you have reached even if they are still quite vague in your mind. Fourth, describe your present world. Think about what is good and what you like about this world and then write down what is bad (by God’s criteria) and what you don’t like about this world. Be very honest and without a lot of emotion. You might ask a trusted friend to look at the list to test the accuracy of your comments. Fifth, describe your perfect world, the world around you that you would like to have. Be realistic. Streets of gold while on earth are not likely. Use
P l an
as much detail as possible. Add to it over a several day period as you give it more thought. Sixth, what do you need to have or do to accomplish this world? How would others be impacted by it? How would it change you? Would God be pleased with this new world? Seventh, think first of the long-term goals, the ultimate parts of this world. Then think about what steps you need to take today, next week and next month to make this happen. The more precise this is, the more likely it is going to happen. Once the future picture is clear, do you have the will to make it happen and then the discipline to follow through on that will? STUDY QUESTIONS 1. Complete step number four above. Describe the most important parts of your current world including your perception of what you like and what you don’t like about it. Think about God’s perception of that world – to what extent does it match your perception? 2. Complete step number five above. Make a list – complete sentences are not necessary. Capture your most important thoughts. Talk with a trusted friend about this. 3. After completing parts of steps 4 and 5 above, many people continue to do the same thing expecting different results. Your world will change only if you change. Is what you wrote in #5 what you really want or is it just an expression of frustration? If you really want it, what is your first step and when will you take it? — Kenneth Oosting, Ph D

Has something in the magazine or something you have discussed with someone or some thoughts that you have had or something that you have heard, brought you to a point of realizing that you want and need to know Christ in the truest and personal sense? If so, below is a simple outline for someone of any age who is not a Believer to act on their desire to accept Jesus Christ into their heart as their Savior.
of
God’s Plan of Salvation God created us to honor and serve Him Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist[b] and were created Each of us has sinned against God Romans 3:10: As it is written, “There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sin Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We each must accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior Romans 10:9: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:13: For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God and Heaven Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Good works cannot ever earn God’s forgiveness and Salvation Titus 3:5: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. God loves each of us John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
To accept Christ into your heart and life, pray a simple prayer along these lines - “Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sins. I know that Jesus died for my sins and the sins of the world. Right now, I ask Jesus into my heart and receive Him as my personal Savior. Forgive me of my sins, thank you for saving me through the blood of Jesus. Please Lord, help me live for you. In Jesus name, amen.” All scriptures are taken from The New King James Version of the Holy Bible.

In His Grip
The Cure for Life’s Detractors Just a few weeks ago, Australian Jason Day completed an impressive finish to win at the Tournament Players Championship held at famed TPC Sawgrass. Day, the World No. 1, pocketed a whopping $1.9 million for the effort, bringing his career earnings to more than $33 million. It really shouldn’t surprise anyone that Day blasted his way around the course and easily outpaced the field. Including the TPC, he’d won seven of his last 17 events and finished well in several other events. Day has won a total of 10 PGA Tour events and has second place finishes at the Master’s and the U.S. Open and tied for fourth at the British Open; an impressive resume for someone just 28 years old. But Jason Day isn’t without his detractors. Although he has been one of golf ’s top players, many people have been quick to label him as not realizing his full potential. They’ve strongly critqued whether he’s missed his moment, or if he just has had a mental block that wasn’t allowing him to succeed. Fortunately, Day has responded to his detractors through perseverance and consistency. In 1 Timothy 4:12, Paul writes his young friend Timothy and advises, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” This is good advice to all of us who follow Jesus Christ and face detractors, regardless of our age. Let’s face it; they are everywhere. Coworkers, supervisors, neighbors and even fellow church members can say something
negative that can take the wind out of our sails. And let’s not forget our “adversary the devil,” as the Bible calls him. He is constantly standing and accusing us of being failures. But look closely at how Paul counsels Timothy (and us) to respond. We are to be an example in what we say, how we live, how we love, in our faith and by a pure and holy life. He’s not talking about a “one and done” here. This isn’t a checklist of items we do once, cross it off and move on. No, the way we answer the detractors is to show up day-after-day and walk consistently through life with the Lord. If we stumble, return to Him in humility and continue moving forward. Consistently walking with the Lord is how we develop the life that pleases the Lord. How about you? Do you have a daily “tee time” with the Lord where you show up and meet Him for the day’s round? If not, I’d encourage you to reserve tomorrow’s tee time. Then, do it again the next day and keep meeting Him every day for the rest of your life. Pretty soon you won’t be able to hear the detractors because you’ll be too focused on listening to the Lord. — Scott Lehman is President of In His Grip Golf Ministry and author of the popular book, “More than a Game.” Scott and his family live in Thompson Station, Tenn.

Touching Base
For The Graduates:
I hit one homerun in my life. I was taking some 4th,5th, and 6th grade boys on a camping trip and we went to our Men’s Friday Night Church Softball Game first. I am sure I was concerned about my play in front of my Sunday School Class; but I don’t remember that now. I don’t even remember much of the game, or who won. What I do remember is one at bat when I hit the ball further than I had ever hit it. The pitch came floating in and I swung. The ball went so far I even lost track of it and started around the bases. I can remember running across second base and our third base coach waving his arms for me to keep coming and to head for home. As I crossed home plate I kept on running and started around the bases again. As I was running toward home the second time the other team finally retrieved the ball from leftfield and threw it to a player standing between me and home plate. He tagged me and the umpire called me out. There was some discussion after that. Some may have said that I had already crossed home plate, how can he be out? I may have volunteered that I missed second the first time and wanted to get that corrected. The umpire explained that I was out of the baseline a soon as I had missed second the first time. I should have gone back as soon as I missed the base the first time around. I kept on running, even though I knew I had not stepped on second as I ran across that base the first time. When I arrived at home plate I knew I had not touched second base, so I started around again. I was worried about the other team knowing I had not touched second and I also did want to do it right, so I started around the bases again determined to do it right this time. Despite all of this determination I was called out. I had not followed the rules. I had not run the bases the way they are supposed to be run. Over time, I have learned much from that “homerun.” If you don’t touch base the first time around, correct it at that moment, or as close to it as possible. A double or triple is better than an out. Many times in my professional career this homerun has come to mind. I am glad God can redeem, and teach us through, our mistakes. A friend of mine had me lead a devotion to a different group of teenagers. I read about David’s mighty men and their individual accomplishments for David and the Lord listed in Second Samuel 23. I also read a description of the tabernacle and all of the details that can make your eyelids heavy. And then I said those passages of scripture teach us two things about God. God is interested in people and God is interested in details. As we go through life we need to do the same. Love people with the Love God has given to us. We can only do this with and through the Holy Spirit’s power and strength which we have been promised is working in us and even better we can feel. And also we need to pay attention to details, especially God’s details. He has a way He wants things done. We would do well to do things His way, as best we can. Strive to touch each bases in the order they are to be touched. And when we miss one; stop and go back and touch base. — Steven Compton

Finishing Touches Remember when we were little children and couldn’t wait for Vacation Bible School? I remember long ago back when I lived in Clearmont, Missouri, I was so excited! We sang songs, played bible games, put on shows. My favorite part was the way we finished the day. Crafts! One particular season we made crafts called “God’s Eye.” I wish with all my heart I still had my God’s Eye. It was beautiful, to me! Picasso at age seven! It was made of two sticks held together in a cross position with several layers of our favorite colors of yarn we would weave around and through the held together sticks. The result of the final product was an angelic cross; my God’s Eye, held together by kite like strands of colorful yarn.
This article took a totally different turn then what I had planned. Friends, this is for “All The Graduates”. I am speaking to every and anyone who has not given God a chance. He is so very proud of you all! Dear heart’s, He is not finished with ya’ll yet! He has held His precious children together with pearls of love, living water, a future sea of glass, and one last thing, unconditional love that is beyond definition. Graduates, if you already know Jesus, then you know He has worked so hard to love and carry you through school. He shouldn’t have to work so hard; He’s God! But that’s our sweet, strong and gentle Father. The Lord wants you to have your cup overflowing! Pass the word on to a fellow graduate that perhaps has no salvation at the present time. What good is an education if it is not for His Glory? In conclusion, know this as well: God Almighty is not finished with you yet! He feels your ups and He cries when your tears fall down your cheeks. He respects you and will continue to pepper your life with His finishing touches. Congratulations! God Bless you! Remember, seek ye first the kingdom of God {Matthew 6:33 KJV}. He’s got you cradled in His arms. You Grads are going to be just fine. Now go and prosper! — Tammy Leigh Merritt and her kitty Egypt reside in Columbia, Tenn. She enjoys studying God’s word and writing for His glory.

T eachable M om e nts
It happens all of the sudden and what begins as a tingling sensation, in your nose, rapidly evolves into a sneeze: Achooooo…followed by a friend or stranger saying, “Bless you.” The very expression has become so common it rolls of the tongue as an automated response that most have forgotten what we are truly saying. Bless you can be a response heard in a local church, to a suffering friend, a child who is crying or even a stranger who sneezes; but have you ever considered the divine power in such few words? While most remember the account of Jesus feeding the five thousand I have met few who key in on a simple act of such profound importance: 11 Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks (Blessing), and distributed them to the people who were sitting there. He did the same thing with the fish. All the people ate as much as they wanted.” (Matthew 14:13–21) For most the blessing is rather ordinary and expected as “those words Christians speak.” But when you understand why Jesus blessed the Father (God) then “those words” carry greater weight than just a passing phrase. In the Hebrew and Greek the word from which we get “bless” is barû, eulogētós or makários and throughout the Bible to bless meant to worship or praise by bestowing goodness, favor, adoration and gratitude. So, as I have searched the Scriptures I have arrived at least three expressions of how powerfully blessing can be applied in the and through the life of today’s believer:
1. God blesses His people by granting prosperity or well-being in the form of both physical and spiritual grace. 2. People bless one another by giving goods, authority or benevolence. 3. One might also bless their work, tithe, home and food as holy unto the Lord. The ability to bless has always been an integral part of the life of the Christian. When you consider the power in blessing God, and one another, it becomes easier to see how you can truly impact people through a specific purpose, act or by simply living a Godly life. Too often we miss opportunities to extend blessings because we have forgotten the meaning behind the words. As Christians we possess the capacity to celebrate and honor God as well as enrich the community of Christ. As husbands and wives we can be blessings to one another and build upon a healthy Christ-Centered union. As parents we can be blessings to our children and raise them in the beneficial knowledge of experiencing the Christian life. And to the friend, or stranger, we can extend blessings beyond the passing phrase, “bless you” by intentionally looking for opportunities to speak and sow into their lives the light and hope of Jesus. — Joshua Johnian serves as the lead pastor at Maranatha Church located in Franklin, Tenn. OUR THERAPY STARTS AT 8 WEEKS OLD.
Capstone Treatment Center is a residential therapy center for young men ages 14 to 25 struggling with addictions, behavioral and attitude issues, co-occurring disorders, trauma, family conflict, and struggles with relinquishment and adoption. Every resident receives a Labrador
retriever puppy upon admittance. Canine Companion Therapy is a unique and special part of our approach, forming an irreplaceable relationship with unconditional love and acceptance. After graduation, the Labrador serves as a sober companion and
constant reminder of the Capstone experience. LET US BE YOUR PARTNERS IN HEALING.
Residents receive highly personalized attention thanks to our 1-to-2 therapist/resident ratio – and all of our therapists either hold PhDs or master’s degrees, specializing in sexual
