POWER 3 Vital Truths About The Power From Above

12 and appointed them, He intended two things for them: That they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach. However, they would not just be preachers but also be power-packed vessels in His hands. If you are a Gospel worker, commissioned by God, power over evil spirits and sicknesses is yours. God never sends out His people to work for Him without equipping them with His power for the task. The sending out of the disciples is also mentioned in Matthew 10:1-42 and Luke 9:1-6. There, the verses are much clearer than they are in the Gospel of Mark. Matthew 10:1 says: ‘And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.’ The disciples had power to cast out the evil spirits and they were given power to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of diseases. In short, there was to be no ailment that will be not be subject to their power. What power! When they were called to be His ministers, Jesus appointed them to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons (Mark 3:14-15) and in Mark 6:7 He gave them the power! Jesus Christ is as good as

BY ROBIN SAM AND HE CALLED the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits (Mark 6:7). THE 12 disciples that Jesus Christ called and separated for His work have seen the Master at work. They had seen and experienced the miracles that He performed in the lives of the people. They had firsthand knowledge about the transformation His words have upon lives – their own lives had been changed for the better. And, now they were being sent out to the mission fields by the Lord. And while He sent them, He took care to send them two by two and gave them power! Nobody commissioned by the Lord for His work need to go about in his own strength. The Lord Himself gives them His power! Hallelujah! Now, if you will turn with me to Mark 3:14-15, we would be able to see what Jesus meant to do with the disciples when He called them over to follow Him. ‘Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons…’ Giving His workers power is never an afterthought in God’s mind. When Jesus called the THE CHRISTIAN MESSENGER w OCTOBER 2016

in their lives and ministry? On what basis were they given to them? Their qualification was not the criterion, if that were so nobody would have passed the muster. Their influence in the society was not the yardstick, only Matthew had some semblance of influence in the society because of the job he once held. Their holiness was definitely not considered. It wasn’t their loyalty; they were rank deserters. When it was the time of reckoning none of them was with Jesus. So, what mattered really? Power and authority were given to them on the basis of what they meant to Jesus. It depended on their relationship with Jesus. They were the followers of the Master and that was the only thing that mattered. In Luke 10, we see Jesus sending another 70 people, two by two, into every place that He Himself was about to go. In verse 17 we see them exclaim thus: “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” Those seventy people were thrilled that unclean spirits obeyed their command, but they knew where the power and authority came from. The power over demons did not come from any of the 70 names. It came from the Name of Jesus Christ. They knew the power would operate in their lives as long as they had the Spirit of Jesus Christ in them. When God’s Spirit moved in and through Paul many unusual miracles occurred. It reached a point where the physical presence of Paul was not required for a miracle anymore. When they brought an apron or a handkerchief from him and lay it on the sick, diseases left them and evil spirits went out of their bodies. While all these things happened, a group of traveling Jewish exorcists and the seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, found it all very interesting. They probably thought it would be a highly lucrative way to make a name and a living and hence began attempting to cast out demons by simply invoking the Name of Jesus Christ. Sadly, they did not have a clue who Jesus was. So, they said: “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” We know how the story and their ‘ministry’ ended. In Acts 4:13, the people who heard Peter and John preach were impressed by their courage. They knew they were an uneducated and untrained lot, but they realized that they had been with Jesus. That’s a powerful association!

His word because He is the Word. He never goes back on His promises. What He has promised you, He is mindful to give you. 2 Corinthians 1:20 says: ‘For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.’ There are three vital truths that we need to understand from Mark 6:7.

1. Power and authority are given to us in God’s time No worker gets power and authority from Day 1. Jesus’ disciples were no exception. Of course, when they were installed as His disciples they were appointed to get power, but power came into their lives and ministry much later. Even today, power and authority are given to us when God deigns it it’s time. That’s how it was in Jesus Christ’s own life and ministry. At the wedding in Cana, when the hosts ran out of wine, Mary approached Jesus to tell Him about the lack. We don’t see Jesus jumping into the thick of things to prove His divinity and exercise His power. His immediate response to Mary is recorded in John 2: 4. ‘Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come”.’ Jesus knew His hour had not yet come, but when it came He did not delay a minute longer. Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He had a word of instruction for His disciples. He knew they were wont to going out here and there on their own. So, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem. He knew there were quite a lot of impatient folks like Peter, John and James among His disciples. So, He asked them to wait for the promise of the Father. He said: “…you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” (Acts 1:5). The promise of the Father will not tarry a moment longer than it is needed, but the disciples ought to be in Jerusalem and wait for it. Dear child of God, have you begun to lose hope on the Lord’s promises to you? Hold on to them. Psalm 33:4 says, ‘For the word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth.’ Are you worker of God? Do you feel a lack of power and authority in your ministry? Don’t despair. Romans 8:32 says, ‘He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?’ Ask for power from above! If you have been called by Him, it’s your right. Ask Him and He will give it to you – in His time.

3. The power is the same as the one Jesus had on earth

2. Power and authority are given to us Mark 6: 7, ‘And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave based on our relationship with Jesus How did the disciples receive power and authority them power over unclean spirits.’ Website: www.christianmessenger.in Email: christianmessengerindia@gmail.com

THE MESSAGE will do also; and greater works than these he will do…” Elisha, who asked Elijah for a double portion anointing, received it (2 Kings 2: 15).

Luke 9:1, ‘Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.’ Matthew 10:1, ‘And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.’ If you read the above verses, you realize the importance of the power the disciples got. It was over all demons, all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. The power, you may think, was only over evil spirits and diseases. But that’s not all. You need to read Matthew 10:8. It says: ‘Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons.’ The power the 12 disciples got included raising the dead. The disciples got almost all the power that Jesus Himself exercised on earth. In Jesus’ ministry, He raised Lazarus, Jairus’ daughter and the son of the widow of Nain. He gave His disciples the same power. What a great God we serve! He gives His disciples the same powers that He has. No guru worth his trick would do it. If a guru taught His disciples all he knew, he would probably be out of business in no time. But, here you have a God who delights in giving His children whatever He has. In John 14:12, Jesus said: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he

Power: A word of warning Great power comes with great responsibilities. When we are empowered by God, we need to remember that He is not only the source of power but He also has power over our lives (Job 25:2). Romans 9:21 reminds us that He is the potter and He has the power over the clay. Jesus, the power-giver, will come one day as the One who has “the authority to execute judgement also because He is the Son of Man (John 5:27). And, because He is a righteous Judge we need to remember to live a holy life worthy of our calling. With authority comes accountability. ‘So then each of us shall give account of himself to God’ (Romans 14:12). And, finally we need to remember that we don’t have to run hither and thither for power. Jesus, the King of kings, said all authority has been given to Him in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). The Word of God is the source of power. Ecclesiastes 8:4 says: ‘Where the word of a king is there is power.’ Stay close to Jesus. Stay true to the Word. That’s the only way to receive power. Amen.

Break free from strongholds permanently WHEN IT COMES to spiritual freedom and walking in complete deliverance from evil, it is so important that we guard the gates of our lives. Gates are the doorways through which light or darkness enters our hearts, minds, souls and bodies. A lot of the spiritual warfare people deal with is caused by not properly guarding their gates. Let me be specific. The gates are your eyes, ears and mouth. It is through these portals that either light or darkness enters, based on what we look at with our eyes, listen to with our ears, or speak about with our mouths. Regarding the eye gate, read what Matthew 6:22-23 says. Remove Legal Places for the Enemy If we want to keep evil and the demonic out of our lives, then we have to closely guard our gates and not allow darkness to enter into us. Once darkness is tolerated or allowed to dwell within us, the enemy is given a legal resting place to build his demonic strongholds in our minds, emotions and bodies. Once the enemy begins to take hold in these areas, not only are you tempted to sin, but driven to sin. Suddenly you are no longer just dealing with your THE CHRISTIAN MESSENGER w OCTOBER 2016

flesh. Now you are being driven by forces outside of yourself into things your heart knows are wrong. Sometimes darkness begins to enter into us without us even realizing it. For example, it could start by just glancing at a sensual picture. But with each successive glance more darkness enters into the mind, soul and body. The enemy is given a place to land and suddenly you are now being driven to look at things you know are wrong. If this is allowed to persist, the enemy could build a stronghold of sin in your life and try to cut you off from fellowship with God. How to Be Set Free In order to be set free you must do several things. First, you must repent for opening up your gates to darkness. You must confess any and all sin to God in complete transparency before Him. You must ask the blood of Jesus to wash over you, spiritually removing all trace of sin. Once you confess, then you must be washed clean by the water of the Word, which happens as you read the Bible. You must have your mind renewed by light and truth until the memories fade and are washed clean. Matt Sorger 8

GOSPEL MELA 2016 24-Hour Chain Prayer

15 Specific Prayer Points For a 30-Minute Intercession Praying with one accord for 2,234 people groups spread across 1.2 billion people in 29 states and 7 UTs in one nation. Every nation, every tribe, every people and every tongue shall say: “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:10).

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Redemption of our souls is possible only through Jesus, there’s no other way. Gospel is nothing but proclaiming that Jesus is the only way to be saved from our sins, to be delivered out of the bondage of our curses and to come out of darkness into His magnificent light. We are doing this in a concerted manner by targeting one State in the country every month for the next 12 months. We are reaching out to 1,00,000 people in each state with the Gospel message through tracts, other booklets and personal evangelism wherever possible. We are not working

Why should we intercede for others? BECAUSE WE ALL need prayers. Everyone we know is either going through a crisis situation or just out of it or is about to enter it. Because your neighbour desperately needs Jesus Christ or that distant cousin of yours is facing a deadly disease or perhaps you yourself are faced with a dilemma and you need help, fast! And what better way to summon the hosts of heavens than to pray, to lift up our spirit towards the Author and Finisher of our faith? Why pray for others? Because they need your prayers. Because you never know when you yourself will need others to pray for you. Ø . The Bible says that “if any of you need wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5). When we ask God for wisdom, His desires will become the focus of our prayers. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2). Ask God for a THE CHRISTIAN MESSENGER w OCTOBER 2016

on this in isolation but have involved several local churches and missions organizations in each state. We have christened this effort as ‘Gospel Mela 2016’. We need your prayerful support to make this a success. We lean on to the One who said: ‘…for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). God expects us to intensify our prayers and give freely to the Lord’s work so hundreds of thousands of Indians will come to know that Jesus is the only way to salvation in the next one year. Besides using these prayer points to pray for 30 minutes during the 24-hour chain prayer time, will you also set apart five minutes a day or an hour on any day of the week to join us in prayer? If you do, God will do wonders in this nation. Amen. Glory to God. new heart and a renewed mind to pray for others with soul burden! Ù . How effective are our intercessory prayers? As effective as our prayers, did you say? No, they are as effective and powerful as our God is! We have a High Priest in Jesus Christ, who sympathises with our weaknesses. And that’s why Hebrews 4:16 says we can “come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Approach Him with this powerful attitude! Ú . We need to be sanctified before we begin to intercede for others. What is sanctification? It is resolving to see people, events and things only God’s way. It does not come easy. We have to think like Jesus to be sanctified. In John 17:19, Jesus said: “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.” Ask the Lord to sanctify you before you begin to pray. Û . When we pray, the enemy trembles. Satan is powerful than we are and we cannot be ignorant of his designs (2 Corinthians 2:11). Before we take on a mighty enemy you and I need to arm ourselves with power from above. It’s a spiritual battle and therefore our weapons are not carnal but “mighty in

God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God…” (2 Corinthians 10:4, 5). Be armed with the weapons before you get into the battlefield. Ü . Intercessory prayer is a persistent prayer. It doesn’t take ‘No’ for an answer. Jesus Christ taught us about the importance of persistence in prayer through the man in Luke 11. He’s the man who dared to knock on the doors of his neighbour for three loaves of bread for his hungry friend. Through Luke 11:10, Jesus is asking us to keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking. Intercessory prayer is like long-distance running. Be ready to stay on in prayer till you see spiritual harvest in your life and in the lives of those around you. Ý . Pray for the various Scripture translation work going on in India and other countries. According to Bibles International, over 500 million people representing 4,500 languages have no portion of the Bible in their ‘heart language’. Pray for the agencies working towards getting portions of the Scripture among people groups so every “nation and kindred and people and tongue” can get the Bible (Rev. 7:9). Þ . In India, an international agency that has its local office in Assam, has undertaken the translation of the Bible into various indigenous languages. Some of the languages in which translation has been done or is under way are: Bishnupriya, Chakma, Chiru, Darlong, Inner Seraji, Inpui Naga, Lamkaang, Manipuri, Mizo, Paite, Rathawi, Ranglong and Simte. Pray for wisdom and anointing to be upon the Bible translators to get the right words. Pray that no God-intended meaning is lost in translation. Pray for the team of linguists who supervise the translators. ß . Pray for Bible translation that is under way in the Rathawi language. It is spoken by the Rathawa people who live in Gujarat. The Rathawa people are mostly animistic or Hindu. There has been significant persecution towards all attempts to evangelize the Rathawa in the past. In spite of this, there are an estimated 1,000 believers, 24 churches, and 16 pastors/evangelists of varying denominations. There are no Scriptures in Rathawi other than the four Gospels. Having the Scriptures in Rathawi would strengthen the Rathawi churches. à . Simte is a language spoken in Manipur. There’s an estimated 12,000 people who speak this language. Their literacy rate is 65%. There are as many as 40 churches among the Simte-speaking people. At the moment New Testament in Simte is being revised. Pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance on the project. Pray that the project’s resources are met. Website: www.christianmessenger.in Email: christianmessengerindia@gmail.com

We prayed, we will prevail! Samuel (12 years) I am in 7th standard. My parents are involved in the Lord’s ministry in Gummidpoondi near Chennai. In July this year, my parents got the Gospel Mela prayer points. My mother told me God would bless me if I earnestly prayed for 30 minutes interceding for the nation with the help of the Gospel Mela prayer points. I did as she said. I prayed for 30 minutes that day. And, God performed a miracle a few days later. I had always dreamed of playing and owning a drums kit right from childhood. Someone presented a drums kit worth Rs.29,000/- as a gift to me. I shared this testimony with my friends and encouraged them too. I thank Jesus, who gave me my heart’s desire, and praise His Name. I will play the instrument for His glory. I will continue to pray for the Gospel Mela prayer points.

0 . Around 100,000 people in and around the Ø ? city of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh speak Inner Seraji. Himachal Pradesh is one of the least evangelised states in India. Church-planting is at an early stage here among the Kullui people. Messenger Missions has a mission post in Himachal Pradesh. Our missionary from Punjab also has the additional burden of working in Himachal Pradesh. Pray for the Bible translation work and our missionary efforts to bear fruit.

PRAYER POINTS

We prayed, we will prevail! Dr. Karpagam I prayed with great faith and burden for all the prayer points that was listed. I asked God to pour out more of His Spirit of intercession so I could pray even more. I personally feel I need more soul burden. One of the prayer points in recent months was this: “If every Christian family comes forward to send a person to missions or give generously for the need of the missions, we can reach the unreached people of our nation (India) sooner than we think. Let’s ‘Go, send, give’ be the slogan and the heart’s cry of every redeemed believer”.Of all the prayer points this one touched my heart the most. This is also my heart’s cry. Glory be to God.

Ø Ø . Darlong is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken by the Darlong tribe of Tripura in India and Bangladesh. The Darlong people are also in the Cachar district of Assam. About 85 percent of people are Hindu, Christians are only 3 percent. Both Old and New Testaments have been translated in this language. Pray for the quality check in progress. Ø Ù . Pray for the Bible translation work currently underway in the Paite language. It is a Chin (part of the Sino-Tibetan family) language spoken by over 1.5 lakh people in the north-east of India and nearly 1 lakh people in Myanmar. The first complete Bible was published in 2004, the Paite people are still waiting for an accurate rendition of the Scriptures in their language. Pray.

Mrs. Meldina I thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to know about the varied and contrasting types of people living in India. It’s a pity that they live without having any knowledge of their creator and provider. Gospel Mela has encouraged me to pray for them. Praises be to our loving Saviour. Ø Ú . Pray for Bible translation under way in the Halbi (Halvi) language. It’s an eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken by nearly 5 lakh people in central India. Although it is written in Odiya and Devanagari script, the Halvi script introduced by Bikram Soni of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh is said to be easier than the two scripts. In Chhattisgarh although Hindi is popular among people who are schooled, Halbi and Bhatri languages are widely used by tribals. Pray that mission-minded people come forward to publish scriptures in Halbi and Bhatri. THE CHRISTIAN MESSENGER w OCTOBER 2016

Ø Û . Pray for people who speak the Ranglong language. An estimated 70,000 people in the northeast of India speak Ranglong. Literacy percent is moderately high at 80 percent. Seventy percent of the Ranglong-speaking people are professing Christians. Pray for the Old Testament work in progress in Ranglong. Ø Ü . What will be your contribution to the evangelisation work that is on in India? How can you expedite the evangelisation of the nation? Will you commit yourself to praying for 15 minutes every day for the various people groups in India? Will you set

Mr. S. Sujit As we are living in a busy world with our own sorrows and happiness, often we forget to pray for our nation. Most of the time, our prayers are for ourselves. Gospel Mela is a great initiative that motivates us to pray for the nation and its people groups. The scheduled date and time provided for prayer boosted me a lot to pray for various people, who do not know about Jesus Christ, our Saviour, who looks at each one with love. It is an exciting experience to extend our hands, lift up our eyes and hearts towards our Heavenly Father, for His Almighty presence to be manifested among the unreached people. I thank the Lord for the precious opportunity.

REAR VIEW

How to give to God?

Beloved in Christ, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:3, 4). Sometime ago, one of our readers rang up our office and told my colleague that he did not quite like our Cover Story ‘Give: The what and why and how of giving to God’ that appeared in the April 2016 of our English magazine. He told her that there were no specific instructions on giving to God in the New Testament. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The New Testament has a lot of instruction on Christian giving. You only have to read 1 Corinthians 9, 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 to understand it. Giving is an act of grace. You give not because you are compelled to give, but because you know what the act of giving can do to the gifted and the giver. Giving to God must be motivated by love for Jesus. It should be out of a sense of gratitude for what He has done for you (2 Corinthians 8:8, 9). Giving must be initiated by our willingness. God accepts what you give Him if you have given it out of a willing heart. He accepts it if you have given it freely and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7). How much should we give? 1 Corinthians 16:2 tells us that we should give to the work of the Gospel in proportion to the blessings that we have received from the Lord. The Bible says all of God’s children should give to His work (1 Corinthians 16:1). Scriptures also tell us that we should be both liberal and sacrificial in our giving (2 Corinthians 9:5, 6). In the passage where Jesus talks about the widow’s two mites, God tells us that our giving is not really complete until we give that which could have been really used up on ourselves (Mark 12:41-44). Such giving is what is praiseworthy with Jesus Christ. Thank you for supporting this ministry through your prayerful and sacrificial offerings and contributions. May God Himself bless you according to His promise: “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8). In His Service, Robin Sam

What’s the most effective way to do God’s ministry? I doubt if we’ll ever have a definitive answer to that question, but one of the ways we can do it best is through children’s ministry. The goal of any ministry is to make ordinary men and women Kingdom people and to make them ready for the Lord’s imminent return. But dealing with grown-up people has its own challenges. Kids are the best. That’s why Jesus Christ in Matthew 18:3 said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ Frederick Douglass, that great American orator, said: ‘It’s easier to build strong children than to build broken men.’ RS

SUPPORT OUR MINISTRY

Help us gift woollen blankets to people in our mission fields GREETINGS to you in the Name of Jesus Christ, the One who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Come November and cold season begins in several places in north India. November, December and January are perhaps the coldest months in many northern states. Like in the previous years, we would like to give woollen shawls and blankets to the people who are covered by the ministrations of our mission fields. This year, we would like at least 500 people to be benefitted by this outreach ministry. We need to raise Rs.75,000 immediately to be able to meet the need. Will you come forward to meet this need? You can look at making this gift available to 5 or 10 or 50 people. If the Lord asks you to stretch out your helping hand to the poor believers and seekers in our mission fields, you can get in touch with us. Your generous offerings and gifts will help us share the love of Jesus Christ with those people. May God bless you and your household. Amen. Messenger Missions has entered an exciting phase of the Lord’s service. We now have presence in 5 states – in Jammu, Chhattisgarh, Punjab,

Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. There are three workers in Chhattisgarh, one each in Jammu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, and the one in Punjab doubles up for Himachal Pradesh as well. I would like you to remember our missionaries in your prayers. They are facing unique challenges. The need in each of the states that we are in is great, but then the Gospel workers are carrying on bravely serving the Lord faithfully. Sometime ago, three of them expressed a desire to possess a motorcycle each sometime ago. At that time, I told them to pray in the fervent hope that Jehovah Jireh (the Lord who provides) will meet all their needs. I am praying God will raise people to meet the need. At the moment, they are managing with overcrowded and erratic bus transport. They travel long distances to reach villages to conduct prayer meetings and meet believers. If the Lord lays it on your heart, will you come forward to meet this need?
