“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” I aim to be a designer that isn’t defined by one approach

and to transport viewers into an altered reality through the way I see it. My aim overall for the year is to develop a more personal and defining style to call my own but at the same time fear I’ll think too much what I ‘should’ be doing rather than questioning it. I want to experiment further before I regret not taking chances and embrace mistakes whilst pulling together a portfolio to be proud of.

Jordan studied on an Art foundation course in Darlington before joining first year of Grapic Design at MMU 2012. Although she would lable herself a Graphic Designer her work fuses elements of Photography, Illustration and a more hands on approach. She is heavily influenced

by the work of William Eggleston and the witty drawings and satire of David Shrigley. Jordan added "I really like outsider Art, its raw and pure creativity. Not focusing on what is classed as Art but driven by what they love"

8

Jordan’s summer project focuses on the narcissistic undertone that comes with the nature of social platforms. Playing with the semiotics of ‘emojis’ she changes the context of this modern day hieroglyphic used for communication and places them into a more serious setting linking to news stories over the summer and highlighting how we cut ourselves off from the outside world.

Simon Bolivar was used to the heat, but the Amazon rainforest was hotter than anything he has ever experienced, they thought…

at once how Walt felt about learning Russian. Hardest god damn language to learn! He yelled as Grace walked out, sick of the sight of him. He could not believe how…

..

much weight Grace had gained, she just couldn’t stop eating croissants after moving to Monaco and really hated… Woodrow Wilson, so he replied, “I never have been keen on you anyway,” “my pal John Lennon’s a true friend.” John Lennon replied… “Why an Earth shall we leave earth man? The trees are our friends, we are one with nature, mother earth is our spiritual guide man.” John inhaled deeply and handed the doobie over to Ernest. “There you go man take this,”… he heard Lennon say and Ernest had realised he had been passed out from licking poisonous toads in Lennon’s apartment in New York. It was all in his mind.

Christian has a keen interest in computers which is reflected skilfully in his work as it is largely digitally made using Adobe software. His work takes influences from Russian Constructivism and in particular revolutionary posters and propaganda which you can see reflected in his clean cut posters and book covers. Christian also draws inspiration from various examples of architecture; his favourite building is the Flat Iron building in New York City, he takes into account the geometric angles and prominence of it every time he produces a new piece of work. He enjoys listening to music, for example Madness, whilst designing because it helps him focus on the task in hand.

16

Christians summer project encompasses detailed observational data he collected about his daily activities with clean vector drawings to create a simple yet effective info-graphic. He has used a range of subtle colours and shapes in order to convey this information successfully and concisely. It is cleverly presented as an ‘official’ report meaning that the data is easily digested by the audience in a sophisticated manner.

In the Beginning there was rock, and it was good. John always enjoyed strumming along with his guitar and he thought he was quite good at it, until he met Ernest Hemmingway who, had just returned from an antiques fair and bought an authentic pre war sniper rifle, which he very much wanted to show his friend Simon Bolvier whom he was extremely superstitious about who and who didn’t come into his house, but of course this was

Idiotic beyond all reason. She was a stupid princess, a talentless beauty. Deep down he knew she must be his.

Grace hated all of them, she wished she could just run off with Woodrow Wilson, Who was casually bathing himself in goats urine as he thought it would make him look more youthful.

Joe Britch entered into foundation intending to do fine art and was then suggested that maybe graphic design would be more suited to him. He didn't

really know much about it, however after a few days of doing it he knew that's what he wanted to do. Joes work is heavily influenced by classic swiss typography.

24

25

Joes project is a day to day log of the summer turned into a calendar, to collect data on mood, distance travelled and money spent, to try help him find correlation between happiness and distance travelled the calendars are made with strips of coloured paper and layered with a sheet of acetate text over the top.

Candy floss interests of humanity french Alps Russian teletubbies

29

It would be hard for walt to learn Russian so quickly for this task but with the help from Grace Kelly he felt that anything was possible.

..

She really hated that walt had made her arrive early, especially wearing her teletubbies costume, although she was looking forward to seeing Woodrow Wilson

he was holding a massive stick of candy gloss, which was getting tangled in his hair, he decided maybe this isn't the job for me and offered John Lennon some and he replied

In the intrests of humanity I reject your advances and suggest you better leave off my hot body. Would you like to be involved with this disgrace? I should think not. In the end I'd rather see Ernist.

whilst he was skiing in the French Alps but then

to his astonishment, rubber ducks and cheese poured out of every crevice, and they feasted for 3 months.

31

For the forth coming year I really want to focus on what I’m good at instead of trying to be something I’m not. I enjoy illustration and more tactile approaches to answering briefs, for example screen print and letterpress so I plan to hone in on this to produce the sort of work that will get me where I want to be. In previous years I have tried to create really clean cut modern pieces which isn’t necessarily my strong suit however now I know what I enjoy doing I can focus on that. Although I’m worried about the dissertation I always like a challenge and I’m determined to explore my chosen subject to the fullest which I hope will teach me a lot and inform my future practice.

32

Her summer project depicts the tea she made on her work experience through the summer. She has constructed a calendar like selection of spreads to represent the amount of tea she made per week using a very illustrative approach with a refined use of type and a limited colour palette which works very well.

GRACE

Grace and I have very little similarities. However there are a few things in common that we share. We are both female for a start and have fairly short hair, unfortunately we do not look at all alike. As you probably know Grace has the face of an angel, where as my face is just about average. But back to the similarites, Grace was accustomed to wearing a tiara as she was the wife of Prince Rainier the Third of Monaco, I also (once) wore a tiara to my fifth birthday, I’m sure they were made out of a similar material. Princess Grace had a strong Catholic upbringing which I can relate to as I’ve been to church a whole three times in my life. In 1960 the fashion icon was honoured with a inaugaration into the Best Dressed List Hall of Fame, something I know about all to well because I was given a similar title at my Sixth Form Prom*. As you can see we have both also been in a swimming pool**.

*That’s a lie I actually got the ‘Best Legs’ award at Prom and my best friend Ally got the ‘Best Dressed Girl’ award. Much to my dismay. **Another lie, thats not even Grace Kelly, its actually Nicole Kidman..

ME.

Woodrow Wilson was casually walking his pet ferrets, until he noticed a pair of round spectacles laying there on the ground, he picked them up and said “John Lennon are these yours?”

“Certainly not! Are you accusing me of not loving my beautiful wife? Sir you are out of order. I should report you to the police for such accusations!”

Ernest may have a go at adopting a cat like his pal but he had recently

lost his foot fighting in the bath tub with Walt Disney, who

had decided there and then that he would force Grace into marrying him whether she liked it or not,

when all of a sudden Grace jumped out of the cupboard and gave Woodrow Wilson a massive knock.

Brad Dickinson is a 3rd year design student studying at MMU. His work has been growing and evolving ever since he discovered the world of graphic design studying on a foundation art course 4 years ago. He prefers to call himself a, “Graphic Artist” to graphic designer as his interests in media cover a broad spectrum of techniques and technologies including Illustration and Photography. His passion for music has lead to him performing in two bands including the infamous, “Spudgun Riot” in which he played lead guitar. His love of music also informs his practice with him taking inspiration not only from the visual side of the music industry from music videos to album covers but also the music itself.

I realised that I spent a lot more time doing activities that were a necessity than a pleasure.

Working over the summer it felt like i didn’t really get a break, i was always occupied doing something, so i noted down every activity and how much time they took, I then prioritised them in to two categories necessity or pleasure.

Is there such thing as to much of a good thing? What if 16hours a day was pleasure? What if we took pleaure in everything we did?

Necessary pleasure

I think if you didn’t have necessity the things you take pleasure in gets diluted because you don’t have the contrast between something you don’t enjoy doing.

the one thing it did make me realise with a lot of time being occupied with necessities, it made me really appreciate the time I did doing pleasurable things and made me make the most of my time

It then made me question would I be happier if swapped the time ratio around, what if I spent more time doing pleasurable things the necessitates.

41

Entitled 128 Hours, Brad Dickinson’s work focuses on an average week in his life over his summer. He looked at what amount of time he was dedicating to necessity and pleasure in order to question how he was living his own life and reflect on whether he was committing too much time to some activities and not enough to others.

42

Woodrow Wilson was regarded as one of Americas best presidents in American history, famous for putting laws in to action that at that time were regarded as revolutionary helping to create a better quality of life and promoting more equal rights for the citizens of the USA. I think that me and Woodrow have a few things in common, we both are dyslexic, are both promote peace and equal rights and we both rock a decent pair of glasses.

"they're my best feature" Ernest Hemingway was taking time out of being a writer and planning his next wild adventure with Simon Boliviar, who was feeling a little under the weather from,

how ridiculous Grace Kelly’s hat was!

..

Walt thought if he was wearing such a hat that he would feel bloody amazing in the outfit she had chosen. The velour really complemented, Woodrow's fine looking teeth, Woodrow replied, "I reckon there my best feature, and at least they are better than John Lennon’s" he replied, "That’s some good stuff right there, I'd trade my right arm for some of that stuff but I don't have the nerve to do it, so I better just raid the bins out side the morgue. life’s a bitch man."

47

I hope to become the best designer I can be this year and I will do this by having faith in my ability and ideas. I hope that with constructive criticism from my tutor I will sculpt my work into intelligent design that stays true to my identity. I hope to finalize my personal style and really push the boat out this year. I hope for a first. I fear f for my social life and my stress levels this year but I will take it all in my stride and come to terms with the fact that being a designer at some point, will be stressful.

Kate’s Summer project focuses on observing the variety of people who visited the pub she works at. Taking an infographic approach the circular vectors represent the frequency of visitors and genres ranging from drug dealers to farmers.

We are both determined to get what we want no matter what people say and no matter how many people doubt us and say we are crazy. We are creative people with an overwhelming thought process. He wanted to join the army but was too young at fifteen years old he was therefore a very brave man. Brave like me. Kate/Walt: same amount of vowels in our forenames, same amount of characters in our name, same

amount of consonants in our forenames. Tilbrook/Disney: both begin with a consonant. Walt was born in December, which is the month before mine in January. He is of Irish decent like me and we both have dark eyes and hair.

Grace was driving her rover to the princess ball but all of a sudden Woodrow Wilson appeared in nothing but his birthday suit looking confused, it turns out John Lennon had slip some L.S.D into his nighttime sherry. John Lennon replied If that’s the way you feel Woodrow then you can be the 5th member of The Beatles, in fact take Ringo’s place he hasn’t paid the rent on the flat this month and I’ve heard he’s narrating train journeys the weirdo. In fact everyone can join. Ernest, maybe you would like a place? “Sorry John I can’t” said Ernest, as he was about to go and wrestle bears

with F.Scott Fitzgerald and then machine gun some great white sharks while narrowly avoiding fatal death but also, Simon Boliviar Would suffer the same fate. A watery grave, swimming with the fishes, until he was pulled to safety by Walt Disney holding nothing but A man who had just walked in was holding a packet of sherbet lemons. Walt began to understand the task before him.
