W h o am I? Im a 29 years old hybrid. Born and raised on the countryside outside Oslo, groomed in Stavanger, Bergen and Aalborg. After one year in military service, “Folkehøyskole”, and a short career as a kinderkarden teacher, I started Marine Technology studies in Bergen, but found out I was not fulfilling my creative side. I desided to cancle my studies after one year, and moved back to Stavanger to try out Urban Planning at the University. I obviously made a wise choise, and my interests has grown exponentially ever since. As a person I’m mellow and cooperative, patient and focused. I thrive amongst other creative humans and love brainstorming and philosphical conversations. I always go all inn to what I’m doing, and constanly want to push my own limits and find new areas where i can improve. Im not affraid of breaking new ground, and rather prefere it than doing the same thing over again. I prefere teamwork but also work good individualy. My intersts are boardsports like snowboarding and surfing, music, photography, concerts, friends and city life in general. When I have the oppertunity

P rofe s s iona l i nterests and assets?

Why h ire an Urban Designer?

Identity and place has always been important to me, and I genuely believe unike design solutions can bring people together and give them a sense of belonging. During my year in Aalborg, I have taken great interest in the time and mobility aspects of urban design, specificly urban transformation processes and inner city space travels, our dynamic perception of the city as we move through it.

Its often saied that Urban Designers operate in the field between Landscape Architecture and Architecture. During the studies we have touched both professions, therefore my projects often include both architectural elements aswell as landscape design. As an urban designer our main focus is what happens between the buildings, how to increase the experience of city life and alow for human interaction to take place. The social aspect of our built environment has always been a part of our education, and is a key element in the urban design field. Besides having excelent values, we have a good understanding of large scale aswell as small scale, and will always concider city scale when going small scale. My background from the University of Stavanger and Aalborg, has both been partly technical. Working with the integrated design as part of the process has definetely kept a dreamer grounded. I believe the ability to thinking wholistic around technical challanges, ecology, sociology, space and aesthetics is important to understand the complexity of our cities and finding good design solutions for the future.

I love all parts of the designprocess, but I probably shine brightest in the brainstorming/idea part. Even though I´m a dreamer, I´m also pragmatic and have good analytical skills. In the end I always want to make things work! Using my hands is also something I enjoy, and seeing the design take shape in to physical form is always a climax. In other words, I really enjoy modelwork.

John F. Kennedy plads, location of the central train station, regional bus station, a number of local bus stops and soon to be a new light rail station, is Aalborgs busiest transportation node. The aim for this course has primarily been to integrate a new light rail stop at the plaza, while during the analysis we found it necessary to include some of the context and extend the project site. The diversity of actors surrounding the site range from banks and retail stores to a hooligan bar and a newly established refugee camp. The plaza itself is where the social problems of Aalborg surfaces every day. A gathering point for alcoholics and homeless people, something that has become what most

JOHN F. KENNEDY PLADS TODAY

citizens of Aalborg associates with this place. A combined shopping mall and transportation hub, known as the Kennedy Arcade has been a failure since day one. Visually disconnected from the plaza, the regional buss statíon is hiding on it’s backside, making it hard to find. The inside is half full of empty storefronts, and businesses are struggling to survive. Needless to say, the place has a problem with identity. This became even more apparent when we investigated the orignin of the name, to find out it was given as a memorial after the assassination of a man who has never been to Denmark, and most likely didn’t know of Aalborgs existence. During the process we have used storytelling both for communication and inspiration, primarily based on John F. Kennedy himself. In honor of a true visionary, we want to give the former president a pressant, a place that fits the greatness of his name. By taking a visionary approach to the re-design of John F. Kennedy Plads, and with focus on both the hard and soft values of urban space, Kennedize Kennedy aims to create a subtle public domain that negotiates between commuters, local actors and visitors. The goal has also been to better connect the plaza to its surroundings and create a spatial experience that functionally and aesthetically enriches travels within the contemporary network city.

Observations and interviews were important parts of our analysis. By spending time at the square, watching, mapping and talking to differnt usergroups, we were able to get an accurate imression of the situation. The main problems circled around how the currant design is unable to afford a space that feels safe and inviting for everyone, and users also found it difficult to navigate between transportation modes. Further on we investigated what was going on behind the facades facing the plaza. It turns out there were som minor clashes between cultures. Local businesses, appart from the pubs, were also struggeling to survive. Urban mobility and sociology became the two layers we chose to focus on.

Aarhus University Hospital is being moved after more than a century at it’s current location. The old hospital site will be facing major transformation in the years to come. Therefore we found it suitable to focus on the transformation process, and developed a strategy for preservation, temporary use and place building. Almost immediately, when visiting the site, we got the idea of working with the spatial section as a tool for communicating our strategy, telling the story of the present and the future situation of the old hospital. By using storytelling as a tool in every part of our project, we

wanted to make geotechnical information and urban theory into something fun and comprehensible for the common man and woman. We introduced Mrs. Moraine (moraine is the typical soil type at the site) to tell the story of what is going on under the surface. The analysis is presented as a walkthrough of our observation as we move through the section.

This short boulevard shure has a ceremonial feel to it. Almost royal! Maybe I’ll find the queen on the other side?

The section model is made out of 8 laser cut acrylic plates, each creating its own section and all together giving a spatial depth to the model. We chose 6 locations at the site for our strategy. These locations are presented as replaceable cards, 2 for each location. Analyses are presented as the present and our strategy as the future. When placed at its

The built environment is a system in an ever-changing process, where changes in climate, demography, the social and economical situations continuously poses needs for development and adaption of the urban fabric. This project deals with the transformation of an area in the immediate periphery of the inner city of Aalborg. A former industrial site is being transformed to accommodate the city’s growth, where densification and adapting to the site’s climate issues are the driving forces of the development.

The design approach of this project proposes a different method of development than the traditional master planning. By introducing the strategy of staging, the site is developed according to time and space, and follows a more natural process, creating a resilient space that can accommodate both current and future demands. The process deals with time as one of the main parameters, resulting in three proposed successive stages of development, where each stage incorporates the sites current needs, both environmentally, socially and functionally. The proposed design is based on the concept crossing borders, and how it can affect the use of an area in both positive and negative ways. Borders or edges has been part of the urban design field for many years – where the discussion encircles the conception of how different edges act as a barriers in both social and physical matters. Further on, the current situation of the refugee problematic drew attention to working with the social borders, and how people meet and interact on common ground.

The first stage is refered to as the Urgent Stage. This is where we strengthen the connections externally and internally, releasing the ground for citizens to explore and temporary inhabit the site. The river is re-directed and retention ponds created, both for water management and as new recreational elements. A temporary refugee camp is established centraly, as container modules arranged in enclaves. The framework of concrete slabs ads a permanent but adaptable layer, building identity from day one. The refugee camp were planned as a temporary solution to a pressing situation. But we know temporary can become more or less permanent, and by created a permanent framework that could be adaptable over time we could avoid the temporary expression such places tempt to get. We found container units to be both affordable and reusable, something that could be easily be moved and reorganised if needed. The ‘islands’ where the container were organized could change function to future demands, that being playgrounds, detention ponds, larger housing units or else.

The technical part of the assignment was related to watermanagement and how living with water could give surplus value for the citizens. By creating spaces that can handle excessive water during cloud bursts will also make changes to the space over time and create awareness of global warming and natural processes concerning water.

Unfortunately it’s potential of being a public space is not used, disconnected from the park and filled with parking lots. The idea is to revitalise the street, and by using the different levels from the remains of Copenhagens former fortification create an interlacing mold between park and street.

This project is divided into two parts, a large scale transformation strategy, and small/medium scale re-design of a plaza.

The second objective was to come up with a proposal for a re-design of the plaza in front of the central station. The plaza is today dominated by one of the large railway cuttings, a

The first objective of this course was to re-think the stretch between Copenhagen central train station (Hovedbanegården) and Nørreport station, Copenhagens busiest transportation node. The stretch is today defined by large railway cuttings, where the railroad tracks are exposed through holes at the size of city blocks. This divides central Copenhagen, creating a gap in the east-west connection crossed by thousands each day. But more importantly it makes the stretch between these to major transportation nodes week if by chance one are walking or biking. With that in mind, the playing with spatial sequences Further on, Nørre Voldgade (street) lies

The context contains great architectural pieces like the functionalistic Hotel Astoria and the classic SAS Royal, Copenhagens first highrise and the worlds first design hotel, drawn by Arne Jacobsen himself. It’s a place where layers of the city are prominent. Where what is going on above, beneath and between tells a story and defines aura of this space. The design builds further on this notion, framing the context in a new way as well as opening up for new flows and affordances.
