127 years ago, the founder of Mercedes-Benz challenged his employees to deliver “the best or nothing.” The 2014 S-Class is proof that his words still resonate to this day. Building on its own history of innovation, the groundbreaking new S-Class features dual 12.3" high-resolution screens, hot stone massage seating and an aromatic filtration system on the inside, while outside, a revolutionary MAGIC BODY CONTROL system uses cameras to scan the road for imperfections and instantly adjust the suspension for a superior ride. The 2014 S-Class is the flagship Mercedes-Benz that not only makes a statement, but answers a calling.

INTRODUCING 2013

BENTLEY MULSANNE NEW FEATURES

Bentley is introducing a range of new luxury features to its flagship model, the Bentley Mulsanne, which will make their debut at the 2013 Geneva International Salon d’Auto, with customer orders commencing in April 2013. A new Comfort Specification, including comfort headrests, footrests and duck down filled loose cushions has also been introduced to reaffirm Bentley Mulsanne’s reputation as a truly bespoke grand tourer. Additional enhancements include privacy curtains, which promise to broaden the experience for the Bentley Mulsanne rear cabin occupants, allowing them to maximise work or rest as they travel. An Entertainment Specification incorporates the latest in technological developments, with picnic tables designed for an iPad and wireless keyboard, with the cabin of the Bentley Mulsanne becoming a Wi-Fi Hotspot. Other additions include three new paint options, extending the Mulsanne palette, and new bespoke fitted luggage. Commenting on the new range of options for the Bentley Mulsanne, Member of the Board for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Mr. Kevin Rose, said: “The new features of the Mulsanne blend striking design with the latest in technology integration, enabling our pinnacle model to offer the grandest of touring experiences. The Mulsanne presents unrivalled luxury and

effortless performance, and these enhancements will help broaden the appeal of the Bentley Mulsanne in new and emerging markets.” Comfort and convenience The new Comfort Specification includes new comfort headrests, with manually adjustable wings for lateral support to aid relaxation when chauffeurdriven. The super-soft headrests are designed to fold neatly, avoiding any creasing of the hide, while also extending lower than standard headrests to ensure maximum comfort for an even greater range of passenger statures. New footrests are now available, trimmed in flat-cut cabin carpet and hide to match each individual vehicle. Designed to blend in and provide unobtrusive additional comfort, especially when rear seats are reclined. The footrests can be stowed under the front seats when not in use.

made, with a new rear door armrest storage compartment introduced as standard. This hide-lined compartment, in each rear door, can conveniently hold mobile phones, personal items or Bluetooth headphones for Rear Seat Entertainment. Maximising privacy Whether relaxing or working in the luxurious surroundings of the rear cabin, privacy can be attained through the touch of a button, with new privacy curtains offered as a Crewe-fitted option. Controlled from the driving seat or rear compartment via the window-lift switches, the curtains are fully integrated into the rear doors and rear windscreen surround. Available in either Black or Ivory, the soft, opaque material gives the rear cabin a feeling of opulence and complete privacy, via one-touch operation with anti-trap protection.

Seat comfort is extended with fine duck down filled loose cushions, trimmed using the same traditionally-tanned hide as the seats, included with the Comfort Specification. The design incorporates Bentley Winged Emblems, but also bespoke stitching or piping can be specified. Further cabin revisions have been www.societymagazine.net

Entertainment on Demand The new Crewe-fitted Entertainment Specification option offers a full menu of communication, entertainment and information, with rear picnic tables designed for an iPad and wireless keyboard. Once deployed, the picnic tables reveal a smooth hide-trimmed writing surface, and at the touch of a button, the surface lifts to reveal a dedicated space for an iPad and keyboard, ready to connect to a web browser via the on-board Wi-Fi router. Crafted in solid metal, fine veneer and hide, the tables feature an adjustable screen angle with an anti-trap sensor to protect fingers. An iPad can be charged when the ignition is on, yet is fully detachable but also out of sight once stowed. The Entertainment Specification is further enhanced with twin, eight inch LCD headrest screens, incorporating a 20 GB hard drive and DVD player, played through a ‘Naim for Bentley’ premium audio system, while two sets of Bluetooth headphones and a remote control puts the power in the hands of the occupants. Connectivity at the touch of a button Connectivity is boosted with the introduction of a Wi-Fi router with a high speed Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) phone module and SIM card reader, located in the glove box, providing a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot for internet access which can be accessed by eight Wi-Fi enabled devices simultaneously. There is a dedicated antenna housed in the boot lid, outside of the vehicle’s steel frame, giving improved signal strength versus a handheld device. Extending the palette Increasing Bentley Mulsanne’s leading choice of colours are three new additions to the palette, Dark Cashmere, Portofino and Damson. Dark Cashmere is a versatile and sophisticated warm grey, while Portofino takes a new slant on Pale Sapphire, an already highly successful Bentley colour. Lastly, Damson is a rich, opulent colour with a velvet quality, deep tones and the subtle sparkle of rare purple diamonds.

Bespoke Mulsanne Fitted Luggage Intended for the discerning traveller, a range of bespoke Mulsanne luggage pieces hand made by renowned Italian luggage specialists Schedoni are now available. The full collection is made of six pieces, two large cases, two small cases and two foldable garment bags. The overall shape of the luggage is inspired by the inner door panel design of the car, with the frame surrounding the main side panels echoing the main feature frame of the door with its characteristic twin ridge. The frame also serves to neatly guide the luggage in position into the boot of the car whilst also protecting the handle. The pieces are hand-made to customer’s specification, featuring monogram Bentley lining and embossed Bentley logos on the main panels and use the same hides that go into a Bentley car. The items can be purchased as a full 6 piece set, single or multiple bags. The architecture of the luggage allows the possibility to offer a colour split between the frame and the main panel. Each set can be colour personalised, matching the primary hide colour of the interior of the car or the secondary, or even combining both.

Source : Bentley Press

There are also three additional hide colours, Damson, Saffron and Brunel. Damson is a rich, dark red designed to complement the new Damson paint, while Saffron is a warm, rich colour inspired by saffron bread. Finally, Brunel is a warm technical grey, designed to perfectly complement exterior colours in the grey and blue spectrum. www.societymagazine.net

tête-à-tête

This is a summer celebration! I can not describe in words what I am feeling about this issue. Originally starting this dream in NYC , I have met many people who have been very willing to get involved with Society Magazine. Although, I must say the people of Philadelphia are very gracious and welcoming! Just take a look at Nell Hoving’s cover shot with Maria Papadakis — amazing! And, along with the cooperation of Brandywine Polo, Drexel University and many others...this issue is a complete success. We are also newly located in Rittenhouse Square — and loving every minute of it. I am not one for lengthy notes, so I am keeping this short and sweet. Every issue will have a “Philadelphia File” in addition to showcasing travel, and luxe, around the globe. We have also integrated new advertising styles that the competition will surely envy, while allowing our readers to virtually escape to Paris for the afternoon—bonjour! This magazine is geared to satisfy readers while creating a new level of accessibility, viewing, video and customer service.

Cheers!

of Furniture and Art, where we had the opportunity to view private restored rooms not open to the public, were a few highlights of the trip. There was an amazing trip to Chantilly with a private tour of Chateau de Chantilly with Vice-President Frederic Nancel of American Friends of Chantilly, as well as Chief Curator Nicole Garner. There we toured the Cabinet des Livres, which houses a collection of rare books and manuscripts. An incredible day included a visit to the Foundation de Coubertin

Fellows’ artisans forge ornamental special-ordered iron gates and railings. If the gates of Versailles need to be repaired, the foundation handles it. At the time of our visit, they were working on new iron gates for an expansion of the Lauduree store (macaroon fame) on the Champs Elysees. We got to talk to a young woman who was one of their Fellows, and heard her first-hand account of working and living at Coubertin. An impressive lunch followed in the dining room where everyone eats, altogether, at the same time, everyday. Evenings were delightful, where we dined at private residences. One of particular note was a 17th century residence with an extensive art collection, where I sang tunes from “A Chorus Line” with celebrated pianist Jay Gottlieb as he tickled the ivories. I had to pinch myself. Finally the day came when I got to visit the place that was the impetus for the entire trip. The morning of the visit to Coco Chanel’s apartment was glorious, and people were bustling around the city, going about their business. As we were walking from our bus, we turned the corner to Rue Cambon and saw the famous Chanel sign hanging at residence 31. Many of the women from our group were dressed a bit more stylish that day, one woman having prepared in great fervor (according to her husband). Entering the residence, we were greeted by Chanel’s www.societymagazine.net www.societymagazine.net

director of VIP relations, who lead us on our tour. We began by visiting a reception-type living room with the infamous winding mirrored staircase, where Ms. Chanel could view her models and the reaction to their wears by potential buyers. Then it was on to her apartment, complete with her intimate collection of mirrors, animal objects, chandeliers (she believed in their healing power), exotic tables and Chinese screens, as well as gilded boxes and lots of lionrelated objects, her favorite, being a Leo. Everything she collected had to do with her goals of prosperity, love, luck, money and health. Particularly interesting was the fact that Ms. Chanel didn’t sleep in her apartment,

PROFILE

I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Philadelphia’s well known media personality and philanthropist, Maria Papadakis. Society Mag – So, why this industry? Maria Papadakis – I love to tell a good story! My father told great stories and I admired him very much. When

my father, Constantine Papadakis, came to Drexel as President he wanted our community to be just as invested in our family as we were in them. He wanted us to have a public and open life - even before it was the norm. “Believing in Drexel meant also believing in me and my family,” he would say. The city has seen me grow up – I never felt like an only child. I feel blessed that I have the best city in the world to call my family! SM – How did you get started in your career path? MP – I originally worked in the music industry, and that all changed when my dad got sick and I came back to Philadelphia from

Los Angeles. I worked for Howard Benson Productions from 2004 until 2007 in L.A. with Grammy nominees, multi-platinum acts, and many wonderful entertainers. Howard is still family to me and one of the greatest mentors I could ask for. I always loved writing in any capacity whether it was a song, story, or speech. So, upon returning to Philadelphia in 2008, I became well known for writing speeches for others and speaking on my dad’s behalf for organizations. These opportunities eventually lead to my starting of a nonprofit consulting class at my alma mater – Drexel, which aided in non-profits around the city. I later interned at NBC News locally and loved it! And things took off quickly after winning an Emmy for an Academy of Natural Sciences segment I did. I currently host RAW (rawartisits.org), the biggest arts and entertainment variety show in PA and started producing my brain-child - Out and About in 2012. It showcases everything from the Flyers, black tie events, to carnivals, and gives folks the opportunity to be my passengers on a ride through our city. I am really excited to announce the start of our new series Open House, which takes an inside look at the best properties, homes and infrastructures in the city. Open House launched on August 6, 2013 on Philly.com! Our first episode was 777 S. Broad St. which is an all green building with amazing amenities. Moving forward with the show, next we may visit the Camden waterfront or a Main Line mansion to take a different, and fun, look at the home living. all have acquaintances, but good friends are hard to find in this day and age.

MP – Strength and integrity, much like my mom. SM – What do you most admire in

a man? MP – Well, mental stability! Ha ha! It’s harder to come by than you think! In all seriousness someone who is thoughtful, selfless, compassionate, and doesn’t give up in the face adversity. It’s easy to run away from a problem, very sexy a man who can confront and fix it. SM – What is your dream of

happiness? MP – My dad had the attitude (and even a hat with the saying) “never www.societymagazine.net

SM – Who are your influences? MP – Ryan Seacrest, Nancy Glass, and Oprah. They bring a voice to other talent. But they also do it all! Not only on the creative end and produce, but also entertain others and have their own on air abilities. SM – Future plans? MP – I’m working with Comcast SportsNet on a new show launching now! It’s a sports and entertainment show every week. You will see your favorite athlete(s) doing something completely out of their element, or your favorite entertainer(s) doing something in a sports element. Our first episode was with the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on August 9, 2013 that you can find on the web right now! At the end of the

day, I would like to have a national show, entertain people, make them smile and bring a good story to the table. You always remember a good story! SM – Where would you like to retire? MP – The beach and the mountains. I love California or Santa Barbara. It’s got them both. SM – Favorite music? MP – In all honesty, it depends on my mood…something that takes me away. Anything from Led Zeppelin to reggae music. SM – Favorite cocktail? MP – Jameson on the rocks or a

Dirty Martini. SM – Favorite wine (we know the answer from earlier reading)? MP – Cakebread. Think we can get

me a gift bag from them? Ha ha. SM – Cheers! Thank you Maria!

But creative ideas start at the top, and this is no better illustrated than by the former President of Production for Miramax Films, Dean Allen Sabinson, who has held senior positions at A&E, TNT, ABC, ICM, NBC and Showtime. While at A&E, Sabinson was senior vice president of programming, adding numerous documentary and musical specials to the cable channel’s line up. Drexel’s charismatic president, John Fry, however, is doing more than just building incredible new spaces, although the face of Market Street has changed dramatically over the last three years, ever since he replaced the former president, Constantine Papakakis. President Fry has kept his mission, as stated in his 2010 inaugural address, of engaging students with the community, providing neighborhood partnerships and involvement with the public school system, as well as providing a home buying program for Drexel faculty and staff.

I grew up working in my father’s restaurant learning the value of hard work and customer service. I also was a pro boxer from 1977 — 1985 and learned the value of persistence. From there I chose to go into the luxury retail market and wholesale Diamond Industry gaining 25 more years of experience.

I have been a long time customer of Fran’s (I actually still own a pair of shoes he sold me 16 years ago!) KARL LAGERFELD AT HÔTEL MÉTROPOLE

When considering Monaco, one conjures up images of glistening coastlines, decadent extravagance and old-world glamour, as epitomized by the principality’s most legendary resident, Grace Kelly. As the jewel of the Cote d’Azur, this idyllic town has been home to some of history’s most illustrious characters and today remains a playground of the rich and famous. The likes of Kate Moss, Rihanna and Cara Delevingne can regularly be seen reveling in the splendor of Monaco, whilst many more are spotted cruising the surrounding seas aboard impossibly plush yachts. It was only a matter of time therefore, before one of the world’s most iconic celebrities, and indeed the don of the fashion world descended upon the area, leaving a very distinctive mark in his wake. This man is Karl Lagerfeld and this time, the chosen arena for his iconic creativity is the Hôtel Métropole, one of Monaco’s most cherished hotels that was recently granted the lofty accolade of Best Hotel in the World. Contemporary yet classically elegant, Hôtel Métropole was the perfect place for Lagerfeld’s vision: a mural inspired by the Greek story of Ulysses. A fresco that provides the backdrop to a unique dual concept - Odyssey - which blends poolside dining with evening cocktails, all set within the monochromatic design that has become Lagerfeld’s signature.

www.societymagazine.net

This innovation marks a collaboration between two heavyweights of both the fashion and the gastronomic worlds, giving visitors a clear indication of the exquisite quality to expect at Hôtel Métropole. Already home to Jean-Claude Messant’s outstanding Japanese eatery Yoshi (you must go here and try the black cod), Hôtel Métropole has succeeded in establishing itself as a prime gastronomic destination, with the help of culinary master, Joel Robuchon. His flagship restaurant within the hotel has already been a roaring success; I had the opportunity to dine there during my stay and every course was outstanding. The chef’s extensive bread collection and tantalizing dessert trolley acting as brilliant bookends to the rich narrative of courses that lay within. Robuchon also lends his genius to the hotel’s newest endeavor Odyssey, providing it with the culinary credentials needed to match up to Lagerfeld’s design prowess. As day turns to night, the bar is transformed into the ultimate after dark destination, with cocktails and delicate bites served to the sounds of electro chill out music, while the illuminated mural adds a sense of enchantment to the venue. In keeping with the Mediterranean ethos of well being, there is also the opportunity for treatments at Odyssey - so prepare for some poolside pampering and indulge in a facial or massage. Monaco is a place of where eminent figures of the moment, and now of the past, are presented in all their glory - what better way to become part of the legacy than at Hôtel Métropole? K. ANTICIPATING

ABU DHABI Recognized as one of the hottest destinations for 2014, Abu Dhabi promises to be the most glittering jewel in the Emirati crown. Georgie Lane-Godfrey explains why exactly we should be getting excited. Remember that feeling when you were a child the night before Christmas? The excitement, the nerves, the anticipation? It’s a similar sensation to the one you’ll experience as you sit in the Etihad lounge at Heathrow, enjoying a glass of champagne before you fly to the capital of the UAE. With complimentary massages provided by luxury spa brand Six Senses on offer, it’s easy to see why Etihad has been voted the World’s Leading Airline for the past three years. Carrying the promise of a forward-thinking, luxurious destination, it’s also a very fitting start to a trip to Abu Dhabi. Boasting the world’s most expensive mosque, tallest building, fastest rollercoaster, biggest shopping mall, the United Arab Emirates certainly has a good measure of the superfluous about it. But what distinguishes Abu Dhabi from its flashy neighbor Dubai is the sense of sophistication with which it is endowed. Rather than a showy pleasuredome, Abu Dhabi is developing a rich cultural scene by building a whole host of galleries and museums. As well as architecturally impressive outposts of the Guggenheim and the Louvre, The Zayed Museum promises to be the UAE’s answer to the British Museum here in London. However, with these cultural offerings not appearing until 2017 at the earliest, current visitors can only imagine with eager anticipation the transformation which will befall Abu Dhabi once they open, placing it firmly on the map as a cultural hotspot. Cultural wealth may only be on the horizon but those seeking more physical thrills can rest assured that Abu Dhabi already has them in abundance. Adults and children alike will love Ferrari World on Yas Island, which offers a plethora of Ferrari-related rides, from F1 simulation machines to Formula Rossa. The world’s fastest rollercoaster, Formula Rossa accelerates from 0-150mph in under 5 seconds, propelling you to 4.8Gs as you fly

through the air. It’s an unparalleled experience. However, for those looking for something relaxing rather than hair-raising, there are plenty of more sedate alternatives around the city. Abu Dhabi’s unmissable sight is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which took over 12 years to build and bizarrely boasts the world’s longest carpet and largest chandelier. No one is quite sure how much money actually went into its construction. Perhaps when it comes to religious monuments, it’s not polite to say. For something a little more active, kayaking around Abu Dhabi’s beautiful, protected mangroves to see the flamingos is unbeatable. Combine this with a round of golf at the stunning links course on Saadiyat Island, which was designed by golfing legend, Gary Player. It’s the perfect actionpacked day out. Of course, Abu Dhabi offers the same opulent luxury as any of its neighbors. 5 star hotels dominate the skyline and gastronomic super brands, from Hakkasan to Cipriani are springing up across the city. Top chefs have also followed suit. The 3 Michelin-starred chef Juan Amador’s trendy Amador Restaurant and Cellar in the Park Rotana Hotel serves a fusion of Arabic flavors and traditional tapas as well as an outstanding selection of wines. Combined with the sexy, dark wood interiors, a sleek, curved bar and cow-hide furnishings, it’s the coolest of Abu Dhabi’s celebrity offerings. Of course, Abu Dhabi isn’t as developed as Dubai, nor does it offer the same exquisite beaches as the beautiful Ras Al Khaimah. But what is does offer is promise. In five years’ time it will have surpassed its neighbors to become the ultimate city destination and earn its title as the capital of the UAE. It’s a very exciting prospect, especially if you’ve seen the city as it is now. After all, it’s all about the anticipation! www.societymagazine.net

GRACE OF GATSBY

THE

AT VANDERBILT, RHODE ISLAND A New England summer, particularly one spent by the sea, has a uniquely distinct feel that is hard to describe without wafting into sickeningly saccharine metaphors. In essence, and for fear of making a particularly glaring sweeping statement, a New England summer is perfect. It delivers everything anyone could possibly want from a seaside vacation – the sand between your toes, a good book getting gently put aside to make some room for a sun-drenched nap, long evenings made longer still by plentiful drinks and good conversation – but without the awful, overwrought clichés that have come to define the lion’s share of beach vacations out there. You will not, for example, find any faceless, mammoth resorts here; you will probably also not have overdone cocktails run over to your beach chair with what appears to be the entirety of the Amazonian Rainforest sprouting from its rim, a ‘flourish’ thought up by some indecisive bartender who feels the understandable, anxious need to make it immediately clear why that drink costs so much. No: this is the beach at its most happily, and beautifully, effortless. The epitome of this uncomplicated bliss is, arguably, Rhode Island. And the epitome of that is Newport – a perfect example of Rhode Island’s pretty, unaffected beach towns, adorned with quaint, shingled houses and boasting more fresh seafood restaurants and salt-water taffy stores than you could care to imagine. Admittedly, though, it wasn’t www.societymagazine.net

always so unassuming. In the 19th century, it was the locale to which all of New York’s elite fled each summer in order to escape the pressing masses and the fumes of the inventions that had made them rich in the first place. The Vanderbilt’s famously had a “cottage” out here called The Breakers; I put quotation marks around the word because a cottage probably does not conjure up a mental image of the reality of this gargantuan, 65,000 square foot marble mansion. That being said, this inflection of over-the-top luxury lends Newport a plush aesthetic that few other towns have. And perhaps it’s down to the effects of the recession, but lately it feels as if everyone’s been hankering for a little indulgence. And there is one option that easily stands out as the best place to stay when visiting this gorgeous town: the Vanderbilt Grace, a member of the elite portfolio of hotels maintained by the world-renowned hospitality company, Grace Hotels. The hotel is fittingly housed in a red brick mansion built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, which was allegedly intended for his mistress (both as a love nest and a gesture of gratitude, I imagine). And thus, in keeping with the collective appreciation for the century-old prohibition era, and more acutely, Baz Luhrmann’s latest venture, the Vanderbilt Grace is offering the Grace Gatsby Package throughout the summer, aimed at offering guests a taste of the “Gilded Age” - part Vanderbilt, part Gatsby, and all luxury. The Grace Gatsby package includes a two-night stay at the Vanderbilt Grace for two people, Mansion Passports, a Vintage Vanderbilt dinner with wine pairings in Muse by Jonathan Cartright and a sunset sailing cruise, as well as a daily champagne breakfast and a welcome gift upon arrival. This offer is available until the 31st of September and prices start at 1100 USD. Please visit www.vanderbiltgrace.com or call +1 401 846 6200 for more information.

LONDON’S MOST EXPENSIVE COCKTAILS All Londoners know that a weekend of revelry in our fair capital can put a serious dent in your bank balance. That said, we can’t really be blamed for our indulgent foibles with so many enticing bars coaxing us from afar. In BarChick’s latest compilation, they bring you London’s most expensive cocktails… throw caution to the wind, pull up a bar stool and, whatever you do, don’t look at the receipts.

Claridge’s Bar Claridge’s is arguably the jewel in Mayfair’s crown. The bar is elegant, impressive and swarming with glitterati: join them for tea, champagne or cocktails. Slide into a sexy red leather booth and order a round of Luceo Non Uros - the name comes from the Clan MacKenzie family motto meaning ‘I shine, not burn’. With Dalmore King Alexander III, Sweet Sherry, Marsala, LBV Port, brown sugar syrup, orange bitters and 2 Sprays of Bond and Lillard Bourbon they’ll set you back £50.

Purl Not easy to find, and not easy to be found once you’re down here (do hide away with a date in one of the nooks and crannies), this New York prohibition bar is pretty serious. Run by the Willy Wonkas of the cocktail world, expect some serious concoctions. Don’t settle for the ordinary; instead charge your cocktail with one of their rare vintage liquors and for £100 your drink will be transformed. Add 1863 Hannisville Rye to your Manhattan or Old Tom gin from 1910 to your Martinez…the list goes on.

Salvatore Bar at the Playboy Club The Playboy Club usually conjures up images of sleaze, outrageous splurging and a lot of plastic (both the card and implant variety). But the Salvatore Bar, named after the cocktail Maestro, Salvatore Calabrese, is surprisingly refined, and so

70

SOCIETY MAGAZINE

it should be with a £5,500 cocktail on the menu. The ingredients of the Salvatore’s Legacy are over 200 years old and include 1778 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac, 1770 Kummel liqueur, Dubb Orange Curacao circa 1860 and Angostura bitters from the 1900s. Get a round in.

Purple Bar at the Sanderson Hotel Located in a five star hotel, of course they are going to know how to execute the perfect tipple. In celebration of their 10 year anniversary they have created a range of luxurious (or just seriously expensive) cocktails, using impressive vintages, Fiji ice cubes, rare garnishes and an elaborate range of crystal glass wear. Order the B&B King, it’s a recreation of the popular 1940’s drink made using rare 1940 Martell extra and a unique bottle of 1940 Benedictine. Brace yourself for the bill... it is £490.

The American Bar This bar is legendary. Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book is still to this day the bartender’s bible and Frank Sinatra used to sneak in after hours to play the piano. Today Eric Lorincz is the man in charge of the drinks, and since he was crowned World’s Best Bartender, we think he’s qualified to make you a Daquiri that will cost £250. So if a good Daquiri floats your boat (you probably own one) ask nicely and he will mix you one up using the 1930s pre-Castro Bacardi Gold. For a drink this historic, it’s worth its weight in liquid gold.

BON BON

BAR AT VOLUPTÉ The décor may be in need of some work but for a night out that’s a little different, look no further than Bon Bon Bar. Those of you who are partial to the odd sugary treat will love the unique sweetie theme running through this place, from the colourful jars of old-fashioned sweets lining the walls to the candy-flavoured cocktails. Offerings include the Liquorice Lady and the Cherry Coke-Tail which hark back to old confectionary favourites but come with a very alcoholic twist. Garnished with gummy bears and love hearts, these drinks leave no sweet stone unturned. One or two should definitely be enough though or you’ll soon find yourself on first name terms with the dentist. While you’re there it’s worth heading downstairs to catch a show at the venue’s cabaret and burlesque club, Volupté. The shy and retiring should heed this warning however - the cabaret acts will definitely be expecting you to participate in the entertainment and you may well end up with a lady in a very tight dress on your lap singing you sweet nothings (although this isn’t a guarantee). www.societymagazine.net

SAILING THE CROATIAN VINES

It seems for Tony Hodges there is no better way to enjoy life than by experiencing it in perpetual motion. Born in the West Indies and now dividing his time between Devon and Croatia, he first conjured up the concept that would become the world’s longest champagne bar at Searcy’s, found within London’s gateway to continental Europe: St. Pancras railway station. Further along the line, working at Proctor & Gamble, his penchant for transition led him to coin the shampoo brand name ‘Wash & Go’. A man who thinks not necessarily with a destination in mind but in terms of the experience to be had along the way, it is little wonder that his latest initiative is focused on education through exploration. His new concept, the Adriatic Wine Odyssey, whisks travelers away on an exploration of Croatia’s burgeoning wine production hotspots, strung out along the country’s lengthy coastline. Such is the geography here that cruising down the length of the coast is fully achievable; ally this to the climate and you’ve got a formidable mix. A mix that, according to Tony, means this is the only place in the world where “sailable wine” is realistically possible. For the Odyssey, luxury private yachts are chartered for intimate groups of no more than six - “volume is the source of mediocrity” - a select few who get to sample the nation’s UNESCO World Heritage settlements and their vineyards by boat. They’re joined by expert sommeliers specially trained to perform duties such as sending the finest bottles home, or arranging an overnight stay at one of the many luxury hotels on the route. But what, you may ask, is the link between sailing and wine? For the organizer of these trips the answer is simple:

72

SOCIETY MAGAZINE

S P E C I A L E D I T I O N

“people who sail are explorers, and these types of people generally enjoy discovering wine. Take the world’s leading wine-importing countries, which cumulatively come to less than two per cent of the world’s population – in spite of this they account for 28 per cent of the consumption of the world’s produce. They’re the world’s great explorers: Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy and so forth…” In much the same way, a rich wine heritage that can be traced back to the ancient Greeks sits in favor of the Croatian wine producers of today. While it may have lost its direction in the following centuries, it’s certainly true that a society previously somewhat oblivious to the natural riches of its physical landscape is now making up for lost time. For any other country on the easternmost extremities of Europe rivalling the world’s biggest wine producers may well be judged an impossible task; in Croatia, one suspects, the nation is up to the task. Hodges, with his voyages, intends to prove that the ingredients for the prospective successes of Croatian vineyards have been there all along, and that, having learned their mistakes producers here are now ready to get it right. Watch Oz Clarke enjoying Croatian wine as he travels down the coastline by visiting the Adriatic Wine Odyssey YouTube channel. Further information on the voyages can be found at www.adriaticwineodyssey.com. Michael Hurley www.societymagazine.net

OF ASIA Benidorm isn’t renowned for its high caliber of hotel and restaurant offerings and those looking for a holiday of gourmet exploration and luxury decadence may have previously been warned well away from these streets heavily lined with English pubs and late night karaoke bars. While pie and chips are undeniably still firm staples of the area, the quest for the finer things in life might just prove more fruitful than anticipated because situated only ten minutes out of town is the haven of tranquility that is Asia Gardens Hotel. Buried amongst acres of lush grounds, the opulent hotel takes inspiration from all things Asian, with a particular focus on Thai style and design. Narrow, winding paths shrouded in tropical flowers lead you past countless infinity pools, wild ponds and secluded coves. Throughout the complex, the smell of Frangipani fills the air, only adding to this sense of the exotic.

Anyone hoping for an especially romantic getaway should opt for the exclusive Deluxe Presidential Suite which boasts a private terrace with panoramic views over Benidorm, a Jacuzzi and its own private cinema. A culinary adventure also awaits you, as there are no less than seven restaurants on site. From Koh Samui, offering traditional Southeast Asian cuisine, to Black, which specializes in innovative dishes with international influences, each one occupies a serene position overlooking different expanses of water. Wherever you decide to eat, be sure to finish off with a nightcap in the Champagne Bar located inside the impressive marble lobby. Finally, if you’re feeling spontaneous (it is holiday after all), take a late night dip in the Balinese Angkor Faces pool which is overlooked by imposing cliffs carved intricately with vast tribal faces. It remains warm 24 hours a day and is particularly enticing late at night, when it is seductively lit and blissfully quiet.

MONACO GRAND PRIX

2013

Mercedes driver Rosberg, who started from his third successive pole position, kept his cool throughout Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, leading the race from start to finish. It was the German driver’s first-ever win at Monaco and gave Mercedes its first win of the 2013 Formula One season. Another German, last year’s drivers’ champion, Sebastian Vettel, increased his lead atop this year’s drivers’ standings by crossing the finish line in second place, 3.888 seconds behind Rosberg. This made it the first German one-two finish since Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf Schumacher did so at the Japanese Grand Prix in 2004. Vettel’s Australian Red Bull teammate, Mark Webber, came in third in what was an eventful race. Race interrupted just over halfway through The event’s organizers took the unusual step of issuing a red flag on lap 46 following a collision involving Marussia driver Max Chilton, which sent Williams’ Pastor Maldonado into a barrier on Turn 16 (pictured above). Chilton’s teammate Julian Bianchi also became involved.

The race was restarted with the drivers lining up in the order they had been when the race was suspended, with Rosberg starting from first, followed by Vettel and Webber. Earlier, the safety car had been forced out onto the street course following a heavy crash involving Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who was treated for neck and shoulder injuries. This was just one of three safetycar phases during the race. Family history The result saw Vettel open up a 21-point lead over Finnish Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen in the drivers’ standings. Vettel and Webber’s Red-Bull-Renault team have a commanding 41-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors’ table. For Rosberg, the victory must have been special not only because it was his first on the legendary street circuit, but it also came 30 years after his father had won the same event. “I’ve known this for 18 years,” a visibly moved father Keke Rosberg told German pay-tv broadcaster Sky just after the race. “I always knew that he would achieve it one day.”

None of the drivers was seriously injured, but the crash resulted in debris being strewn across that area of the course, forcing the race to be stopped. Chilton was assessed a drive-through penalty for causing the crash.

James Colt Classic 8 goal The James Colt Classic 8 goal final at Santa Barbara Polo Club had quite the international flavor, with Austrian patron Ivan Weiss leading a Santa Barbara team to victory against Dark Horse. Young Chilean player Felipe Vercellino led the scoring for Santa Barbara with five goals to add to the global effort. Team captain Santiago Trotz, who hails from Argentina most of the year but considers himself a Santa Barbara native after 20 years competing here, ran the team in his usual clever fashion, and Tony Uretz stepped in to replace the injured Liam Lott and performed brilliantly, marking older brother Patrick on Dark Horse with determination. Dark Horse led through the early stages of the game off strong play from Max Menini and led 5-4 going into the half. The 4th chukker was all Felipe Vercellino for Santa Barbara though, going coast to coast on a speedy blaze faced horse and scoring 3 goals to regain the lead 7-6 at the end of the 4th. The teams held steady through the 5th and Santa Barbara entered the 6th chukker with a slim 8-7 lead. But in the 6th chukker Santiago Trotz, who had been sending Vercellino up front, opened up play with some big runs himself to take charge for Santa Barbara. Dark Horse had a chance to come back after Santi Tahier scored an amazing goal. Date: 13 August 2013 Country: United States of America

Ellerston and UAE advance to Silver Cup semifinals By Alex Webbe There will be no faceoff between Facundo Pieres and Adolfo Cambiaso in Santa Maria Polo Club’s Silver Cup this year as Dubai (2-1) and Ayala (2-1) were eliminated from the field in a Monday morning shootout with UAE (2-1) and Ellerston (2-1) advancing into the tournament semifinals on Wednesday. The Silver Cup semifinals will have Scapa (2-0) meeting Ellerston while Halcyon Gallery (3-0) faces UAE (2-1). Both UAE and Ellerston suffered their only losses of the tournament to an Ayala team who was eliminated in Monday’s shootout. Ellerston lost to Ayala on August 8th in a 16-12 game while UAE’s defeat came at the hands of Ayala on Sunday in a 18-17 shooting spree. Date: 12 August 2013 Country: Spain

La Herradura to face FMB in USPA Piaget Silver Cup finals on Sunday By Alex Webbe FMB (Dan Walker, Inaki Laprida, Lucas Criado and Henry Walker) entered the late afternoon game needing a victory to have a chance of making their way into the finals of the 2013 USPA Piaget Silver Cup at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, and on the strength of a 9-6 win over previously undefeated Restoration Hardware (Ben Soleimani, Hilario Ulloa, Adam Snow and Santi Von Wernich), did just that. In a tightly-contested opening chukker FMB’s Lucas Criado scored the only goal of the period as Restoration Hardware was unable to score. FMB left the field with a humble 1-0 advantage, but took the early lead. A resilient FMB defense held Restoration Hardware scoreless for the second consecutive chukker. FMB picked up a pair of goals from the field from Inaki Laprida ad a penalty conversion from Criado. After two periods FMB was in front 4-0. Restoration Hardware finally showed up in the third. Pitching a defensive shutout of their own, they took advantage of some FMB fouls. Hilario Ulloa converted a pair of penalty shots for goals and Adam Snow added another from the field. Restoration Hardware cut the FMB lead to a single goal, 4-3. FMB took control of the match again as second half play got underway. Criado scored three consecutive goals for FMB as a struggling Restoration Hardware was blanked for the third time in four chukkers. With two periods left, FMB held a 7-3, four goals lead. Restoration Hardware picked up two goals in the fifth with Snow converting a 60-yard penalty shot while Ulloa scored from the field. Criado converted a penalty shot from 40-yards to keep FMB in the lead, 8-5. FMB continued to press but were extremely foul conscious. Single goals were scored by Criado and Ulloa as FMB celebrated the win and a berth in the tournament finals on Sunday. Criado led all scoring with seven goals. Laprida added two goals for the win. Ulloa scored four times (twice on penalties) for Restoration Hardware. Snow added two in a losing effort. The game was played on the ERG field. Date: 9 August 2013 Country: United States of America

WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR With fans who literally stand for the full 90 minutes, chanting and cheering and players who leave it all out on the field, Philadelphia Union are known for standing for the crest on their chest and not the number on their backs. Now in their fourth season, Philadelphia Union play along the Delaware River in the beautiful, soccer-specific PPL Park. Holding 18,500, it is an intimate setting where the fans all sing the National Anthem for each match and rock the stands “DOOP’ing” for every goal scored. 29 luxury suites, a full-service club restaurant and two party decks, with amazing views of the bridge and river behind the stadium, provide the perfect locations for larger groups or higher end enjoyment of the game. An expansive grass and promenade area surrounds the stadium and is host to pre-game festivities at Toyota Plaza. PPL Park had the attention of the world when the MLS All Stars defeated English Premier League’s Chelsea FC at the 2012 AT&T MLS All Star Game, heralded as the best, most successful l All Star game yet. Soccer is known for its loyal fans and supporters groups and Philadelphia Union’s Sons of Ben are among the best in Major League Soccer. They existed before there was even a team, lobbying the League and Commissioner to put a team in Philadelphia. The Union designed their section, The River End, in collaboration with the Sons of Ben to provide for the way that they celebrate the game. With the youngest players in Major League Soccer, Philadelphia Union players are known for playing with grit and determination every game. In a truly “Philadelphia” style, the players, led by Team Manager John Hackworth, fight for every point and defend against every shot. The passion that the fans display for the team is reflected back in their hard-nosed, tough play on the field. Being at a Union game is like no other sporting event and one that nobody can do just once.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 - DEC. 22) As you gather all your friends this week, take note of how the range of discussion eventually comes back to money. And, primarily yours! Sagittarians are bon vivants and can’t resist spreading their largess around (among other things....) but, as you lavish your pals with all sorts of goodies, ask yourself, “Will it be reciprocated?”Hmm. Better ask for a receipt.

It is hard to reign yourself in. The urge is to drop everything, maybe even leave a certain budding relationship, to escape to parts unknown. You think that there is something more out there. There is something that you are missing - tether your wandering spirit this week! You are building something meaningful right here, Aries.

TAURUS (APR. 21 - MAY 21) What area of your life do you see as your greatest opportunity for success? The choices veer from deeper personal relationships to grand scale professional accomplishment. The temptation is to try to have it all, but it will be a tough balancing act. Taureans learn a thing, or two, on the job that can be applied to their grand plans from small acorns grow mighty oaks!

CAPRICORN (DEC.23 - JAN. 20) If you yearn for a bit more attention, prepare to get much more than you bargained for. Capricorns find every little move is examined and reviewed by a cadre of the powerful few. This is great if you are angling for position among the 1%’ers, but not so hot if your dreams veer to more private personal pastimes of the 99%. Maybe the position is 50/50?

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21) Your creativity hits a high note. Will it come out sharp or flat? It doesn’t matter! Play your own beautiful music with verve, gusto and moxie. If you are stuck in time, expect some breakthroughs, but as with anything, moderation saves the day. Geminis can go over the top and blend their various notes into an intoxicating cocktail. Cheers!

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23) Home and family issues dominate your world. Wouldn’t you rather play the dominator rather than the dominated? Relationships require your attention and need to be fit into the context of a balanced happy home environment. Cancers need to call ‘em as they see ‘em and draw a line in the sand - we are not building democracies here.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 21 - FEB. 19)

LEO (JULY 24 - AUG. 23) Complaining will get you nowhere this week ... or any other week for that matter. Leos are privy to a bit of background chatter around the office and try to piece a certain scenario together. Avoid the temptation. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Events are still unfolding and may not take the course you now imagine, take a long lunch instead.

VIRGO (AUG. 24 - SEPT. 23) Virgos feel battered and fried as the weeks progress. Maybe, it’s because there is so much fun stuff to do that you try to do it all. As nice as that sounds, it is impractical and wasteful. Plan your jollies with an eye towards a balance between the affordability and joy index.

S P E C I A L E D I T I O N

LIBRA (SEPT. 24 - OCT. 23) Libras think they are in charge of their domestic agenda, but the house will vote them down at every turn. Instead of forcing your opinions, it is more effective to offer a mild observation and then wait while others think about it. While you are waiting, go out, have fun and let it all hang out.

SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) Your mind is very active this week. Even idle thoughts and musings can burst you into trouble. You might listen to the wrong advice and be swayed by an errant someone whispering in your ear. Turn off the static Scorpio and meditate on what you know to be true. Don’t be tempted to reveal all or even a small tidbit. Loose lips sink ships....

All you want is a bit of press, some recognition for a job well done. But it is not in the stars now Aquarius. Those wielding the power (at this particular time) are not listening despite all your prescient strategies and your Cassandra-like prowess. You are cast as second string in an orchestra of firsts. Tell them to go pluck themselves and just bide your time.

PISCES (FEB. 20 - MARCH 20) Who flipped your switch, Pisces? As the weeks progress you become more socially suave. Your repartee is filled with charming sexual innuendos that make you especially attractive in certain circles. Don’t waste all this oomph in once place. The lesson to be learned now is how much icing to be spread on a particular piece of cheese, or beef, cake. www.societymagazine.net
