CONCEPT STATEMENT THE CONCEPTS OF COMMUNITY AND PRESERVATION OF HISTORY HOLD A VERY IMPORTANT PLACE IN OUR SOCIETY. THE RENEWAL AND REVIVAL OF THE ETOBICOKE CIVIC CENTRE AIMS TO FOSTER A SENSE OF CARING WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. IT WILL ENCOURAGE INTERACTION BETWEEN ALL MEMBERS WHILE APPRECIATING THE CAREFULLY PRESERVED HISTORICAL SITE THAT HOLDS A GREAT SIGNIFICANCE WITHIN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

M ASTERPLAN I
nterconnect Residence will emanate the renewal and revival of the Etobicoke Civic Centre to an age friendly facility that encourages community engagement and partnership. Preserving the heritage characteristic of the Etobicoke Civic Centre with the inclusion of the Hydro building, and celebrating the historic Cenotaph were some of the main prorities of this project. Some key proposed features of this site include: A water feature such as the ankle pool to highlights and reflects the Distinguish Cenotaph. The open a pathway to the existing centre block due to the addition of the ankle pool will provide an inviting and welcoming open space that allows a view to a part of the sense garden. The provocative ankle pool that is designed nearly all the way to the West Mall St. is intended to amplify the curiosity of onlookers and passersby of the site, alluring them to want to visit and experience the feature. A sense garden and an indoor garden is added to site with an intent to stimulate resident’s senses to aid improvement on physical fitness, health, mood and cognition for both the residences and the visiting community. The introduction of the Sense garden will develop the existing parking lot to an underground parking lot which entails reduction of existing pavement to a sustainable retrofit. This proposal proudly delivers on the concept of Community and Preservation of History, both of which remains revered by the society. The awareness and promotion of sustanable pratices is also prominent in this project.

M ASTERPLAN LANDSCAPE
Our thoughtful landscape design caters to all of the occupant and participants needs by providing active features that people can put to use. Our main feature includes an ankle pool that splits and runs across the entire building towards the iconic monument. This water feature was inspired by the Washington monument in Washington DC. The ankle pool is welcoming to all individuals who would like to kick off their shoes and dip their feet in the water to have the full experience of the lovely landscape. Included beyond the water feature, we have a senses garden that allows the occupants to walk through, plant flowers and pick vegetables, allowing them to smell,
5
INTERCONNECT RESIDENCE
taste, see, and feel the nature surrounding them. Next to the senses garden we have provided outdoor exercise equipment for occupants to have the opportunity to keep active and increase their energy to lift their moods and better their health. Located on the south east corner, there is the weekly farmers market that cooperates with the greenhouse. We located the farmers market around the greenhouse to represent the fresh greenery and nature that is inhabited within the greenhouse. The farmers market is an important feature of the landscape design that allows the public to be integrated with the long term care community. West of the dementia building
there are 2 full basketball courts provided for day care children and residents of the long term care facility. The reason for this location is to allow the youthful children and wise residence to interact with each other and create a joyful environment. Majority of these features are incorporated into the site to lift occupants spirit and energy. The landscape is meant to act as a getaway from the industrial aspects of the area and feel more natural elements in the enclosed environment. The benefits of these are that the occupants can nurture and take care of the gardens as a hobby as well as getting fresh air and exercise to benefit their health.

M ASTERPLAN FARMERS MARKET
Located to the east of the Hydro Building’s Dementia Care Centre, the proposed year-round Farmer’s Market will feature both an indoor market and a space for a temporary outdoor market when the weather permits. The permanent indoor market is designed with a clear path of navigation in mind and will allow plenty of natural light into the structure. Temporary structures can be stored away or assembled quickly. The Farmer’s Market will become a regular gathering spot within the community, as it is open to the public. It has been shown that when long-term care residents participate in

their community, it makes them feel more comfortable, safe, and happy – it will also provide more opportunities for these residents of the long-term care and dementia-care centres to socialize with their neighbours. This market will bring in visitors to the surrounding community and encourage people to get outside and enjoy nature.

N ORTH BUILDING
EXISTING DEMOLISHED PROPOSED
LEGEND The North building intended to be used as an assisted living and retirement facility. This building includes 3 floors plus a basement, the first floor being dedicated to our assisted living residence, and the second and third floors include independent living units for retirement residence. Our proposed basement floor plan is what I will be going into more detail with, as It will act as a shared use common space between residence and staff of the North building. The basement Includes amenities such as a communal music
therapy room, common dining space, and common sitting area for assisted living and retirement residence. Majority of the buildings storage will be located in the basement to maximize the use of spaces throughout the building, this includes the general storage, medical storage for nursing stations, kitchen and staff storage, and the multipurpose room storage. The basement also includes most of the maintenance rooms such as the mechanical room, elevator machine room, and electrical room. Staff will be provided with dedicated
spaces in the basement to allow them to change comfortably and will be able to take breaks in the staff room. Finally, Residents will have access to the community kitchen located in the centre of the basement, as well as the laundry room. The basement is intended to be used only by staff and residents in the north building for common daily activities and gathering. Now moving onto Fatima who will be speaking more about the North buildings first floor.

SINGLE UNIT PLAN DETAIL

Within our dementia care community, we are providing an environment where we can help maintain a resident’s sense of control and personal space. Therefore, in our design for the Single Living Unit, we would like to bring in senior-friendly and dementia-friendly elements that can be incorporated into any space to promote familiarity and security for all staying here. The main features of this unit type include: height adjustable bed with moveable handrails; non-slip wood vinyl flooring; wooden furniture; cheerful wall colours that have a calming effect on seniors. With those features in our design, we hope to make the living space feel more relaxing and peaceful as well as promote healing, tranquility and relieve tension.

COMPANION UNIT PLAN DETAIL In order to give seniors as many years together as possible, we also offer Companion Units for partners and couples. Sometimes a spouse may show a sign of dementia or other illness, but their partner may still be in good health and able to look after them to some degree. This will make their living space feel more like home and more welcoming. To assist them on the daily basis, this type of unit has the same features as the Single Unit, but it also has some additional features such as: a minimum of 950 mm of clearance for bed accessibility between the two beds for people with mobility aids; double wardrobes with nametags for belongings. Struggling to know whether it is morning or evening is a very common problem for people living with dementia; hence, we have also decided for all our beds to be facing windows for easy day/night recognition. With the above thoughts and options, we believe that our living unit options will provide an opportunity for couples with Level 3 (Unit Plan -2 Bed) with furniture flexibility to be close each other as well as to interact with other seniors in the community. 2 1 : 50
