Articulating Value
The Auction Business
The value of art is a topic of great interest in the current art market as prices climb ever higher and the stakes grow ever larger. When discussing value, however, we can speak of many different types: aesthetic, art historical, symbolic, cultural and, of course, monetary. No matter the type or amount of value, the ability to articulate the conditions that have influenced the value of art is of particular interest and importance. This course focuses upon two skills that are critical for the emerging art business professional:
This course introduces you to the inner workings of the auction business by focusing on how property is obtained for sale, how the major auction houses compete for consignments, the inter-departmental teamwork involved with bringing works of art to the auction block, and the mechanism and processes at work in the auction saleroom. You are given an inside perspective into buying and selling at auction, the evolution and current importance of financial incentives offered by the major auction houses and how private sales and online bidding have changed the auction industry. Additional insight is provided by guest speakers from Christie’s auction house who will explain their various roles in key departments. You begin each week with a private exhibition tour led by a Christie’s specialist. – 2 credits
– Mastering the tools and vocabulary to address, speak, and write about the vast array of works of art we find within an ever-changing marketplace – Developing the special skill sets needed to work directly with artists and to promote successful artist/dealer relationships This course offers a methodology for encountering and interpreting works of art, with an emphasis on direct encounter and focused engagement with primary source material. The course provides you with an opportunity to develop a cogent argument for value upon which all formal written appraisals of fine and decorative art are based. Readings and case studies will be complemented by a series of intensive, hands-on individual and group projects. – 2 credits

The seminar helps mold you into informed and responsible custodians of art objects you will likely encounter and handle in various professional roles and settings. Painting and Sculpture: The foundational fall term examines the materials and methods of painting, as well as the shifting modes of sculptural production during the modern era. Practical engagement with the study collection begins, including learning a range of evaluation techniques and condition reporting.
[ 22 ]
Works on Paper: The winter term shifts focus to works on paper, a category that encompasses photography, printmaking, drawing, and collage. These varied processes are illuminated in the classroom and demonstrated during field studies. You produce additional condition reports and closely examine works on paper on assignment in museum study rooms. Contemporary Art in Unorthodox Media: Addressing the diversity of contemporary art production, the spring term examines objecthood in the age of dematerialization, ephemerality, and post-studio fabrication, among other issues. You will consolidate your knowledge and skills in order to review contemporary art exhibitions. A term-long project involves scouting and evaluating the work and promise of emerging artists. – 3 credits per term (9 credits total)
[ MASTER OF ARTS IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART AND THE MARKET ]
Art Market Studies I, II, III This course follows the chronology of the Modern and Contemporary Art Survey. Its goal is to familiarize you with the institutions and the key players, which have played an essential role in shaping the art market since the 1850s. The Art Market Studies course considers institutions such as auctions houses, galleries and museums as part of a complex ecosystem. The goal of the course is to equip you to navigate the global art world, understanding the reality of today by looking back at the history of the market for modern and contemporary art. You will learn to identify the trends in art markets since the late 1800s, and how the role of these various players has shifted over time. You will come to understand the development of the art market as an integrated global and transnational phenomenon. In this project-based course, you will develop your research skills by evaluating a wide range of primary and archival sources, focusing on the history of collecting, art dealing and the auction business. An integral part of the course is the weekly field studies to the exhibition galleries at Christie’s, where we engage directly with world-leading fine and decorative art specialists. This provides a unique insight into the inner workings of an auction house and important art market issues, such as valuation, authenticity and evolving global collecting patterns. In addition, sale walkthroughs provide a valuable opportunity to experience object-based learning. You will also participate in handling sessions to develop connoisseurship skills and expand your visual vocabulary. The direct access to specialists and artworks will expand your learning experience, allowing for close contact with artworks and networking opportunities with art professionals.

The Birth of the Market for Modern Art, 1850– 1900: The fall term looks at the development of an independent market for modern art in Europe and the United States. You will learn about Paris at the end of the Salon system and London’s thriving Victorian pictures market, as well as the then-burgeoning art centers of Berlin, Munich and New York. You will investigate the mechanisms that allowed a new system to develop, such as the rise of a transnational gallery system and artist-run exhibition societies. Modernism and the Market, 1900–1960: The winter term looks at the development of the market for Modernism and the relationship of avant-garde culture to collectors and institutions. Focusing on the newly created museums in New York in the 1930s and specifically on the role played by the Museum of Modern Art in the domestication of modern art for a wider public, the course investigates how art dealers continued to play an essential role in the introduction of new art. It also considers the connection between art and politics during the troubled times of the 1930s and 1940s in Europe and the United States. This term charts the shift of the global art world from Paris to New York. The Art World Today, 1960 to the present: The spring term looks at the different players that make up the contemporary art world today. If we consider the global art world as a network of dependencies, the course maps the contemporary art ecosystem while understanding how it has developed historically since the mid-1850s. By the end of the term, you will be able to contextualize the evolving relationship between artists and dealers, and understand how the power of collectors and the emergence of the art fair and biennale phenomenon are essential markers of our times. – 3 credits per term (9 credits total)

You will read and discuss primary and secondary texts and learn to locate and evaluate print and electronic resources. The fall term surveys transformative moments in the evolution of art history to examine its interdisciplinary nature. Readings reflect successive approaches, examining how interpretation changes over time. In the winter term, you will perform primary research in critical reception and analyze discourses on major works of modern art. “As part of the master’s program at Christie’s Education, I completed my internship with the Rockefeller Office, a team specifically assembled for the auction of the Peggy and David Rockefeller Collection at Christie’s. I was placed within the Private and Iconic Collections department, which was responsible for overseeing the Rockefeller’s decorative arts property. This experience allowed me to witness first-hand the multi-faceted decisions and various efforts that contribute towards a successful sale at an auction house.”

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR CONTEMPORARY CONNOISSEURSHIP Neil Maitlind received the 2018 Alumni Association Award for Contemporary Connoisseurship, which recognizes exceptional analysis and advocacy of an emerging artist’s work. Developed as part of the Connoisseurship seminar of the M.A in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Art Market program, the emerging artist presentations are ultimately juried by an expert panel of Christie’s Education alumni. Neil’s winning presentation examined the work of artist Brie Ruais, who creates large-scale ceramic sculptures by manipulating masses of clay that equal the weight of her body and record her physical gestures. While completing his degree, Neil interned in the Post-War and Contemporary Art department at Christie’s in New York. He later returned to his home in London to pursue opportunities in the commercial art world.

“My current role involves overseeing all aspects of buying and selling art from end-to-end. I work with individual and corporate clients to assist with purchases, bidding at auction, negotiating with dealers, and touring art fairs, in addition to selling through auction or privately. I typically assist with creating proposals, authenticating works, arranging logistics, overseeing conservation and coordinating installation. One of my favorite aspects of the program was the specificity of the courses we took. Each and every class was geared towards learning how to directly apply themes taught in the classroom to the real world. The Art Law courses were especially interesting and practical, and having three terms with impressive professionals exponentially increased my understanding of complex legal concepts.”
“In my current role I am responsible for client appraisals, sourcing property for various sales, and managing client relationships. As a cataloguer, I research and inspect each lot in our Evening Sale, from measuring the works to piecing together their provenance and history, as well as working with various experts and conservators in order to ensure the work is presented at its best. Christie’s Education acted as a stepping stone into the art world, particularly for the New York art scene and the major players involved – many of whom came to speak at our seminars. Our alumni network is also a great resource, and lots of my Christie’s Education classmates work with me at Christie’s.”
Bronwyn Shortly Associate Advisory Manager, Winston Art Group, New York (M.A. Art, Law and Business, 2017)
Kathryn Widing Associate Specialist, Co-Head of Mid-Season and Online Sales, Post-War and Contemporary Art Christie’s, New York (M.A. Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market, 2013)
“The program helped me to understand the structure of the art market, in particular how art galleries (especially emerging art galleries) and dealer systems work. On a professional level, I gained experience dealing with colleagues and clients. I learned to look at art in a critical way, how to analyse it and how to see it from new perspectives. I also learned about curatorial work. I loved the fact that we were immersed in the art world, both practical and theoretical parts. I really loved the Modern Art Survey and Connoisseurship sections, as I love art history and the hands-on approach that Christie’s Education offers.”
“I would definitely not be where I am now without the help of Christie’s Education, New York. I was expecting a rigorous, in-depth look at the art world, but I wasn’t expecting the breadth of art history that we were taught in such a short amount of time. Christie’s Education gave me knowledge that allows me to be secure in my opinions, and the ability to express those opinions coherently to others. I was very impressed by the practicality of the integrated curriculum. The course brings you out of the classroom and into the art world to experience first-hand all of the different systems, players, objects, and categories of art.”

Policies and Information The following are the terms and conditions to the provisions of programs by Christie’s Education. Any application submitted for a program shall be deemed to be made pursuant to these conditions.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR M.A. STUDENTS
COURSE SCHEDULE FOR M.A. STUDENTS
The M.A. degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all credits with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and completed all other requirements for graduation including the successful and timely completion of the thesis or capstone project, depending on their program of study, internship and foreign language requirements*. Late completion of the thesis may jeopardize receipt of the degree. The language requirement entails reading competence in a foreign language which may be certified by the successful completion of two years of collegiate study of a given language (with a B or higher grade), or a translation exam given by Christie’s Education. The Academic Committee reserves the right to waive the foreign language requirement for students who have completed their undergraduate studies in a language other than English. Foreign language evaluations will be sent with acceptance materials to each student. No diploma or certificate will be issued and no services will be available to students who maintain an unpaid balance due to Christie’s Education. * Language requirement only pertains to students enrolled in the M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market, not students enrolled in the M.A. in Art, Law and Business.
The academic year is preceded by a mandatory orientation week and each term concludes with a reading and exam week, including a final presentation. M.A. candidates’ language requirements* are to be completed within one year of beginning studies at Christie’s Education. Oral presentations on proposed thesis topics are scheduled at the conclusion of the third term. M.A. students are required to complete their full-time course work in three consecutive terms during one academic year. While we recommend that individuals enroll as fulltime students to best experience the curriculum at Christie’s Education, exceptions for part-time study can be made on a case-by-case basis for the M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market (parttime is not available for the M.A. in Art, Law and Business). Please contact the Academic Director if you require any further information on this option. * Language requirement only pertains to students enrolled in the M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market, not students enrolled in the M.A. in Art, Law and Business.
ACADEMIC STANDING All M.A. students are expected to maintain fulltime status. An M.A. student whose GPA falls below 3.0 will be placed on academic probation. Late completion of the thesis or internship can jeopardize receipt of the degree.

If students withdraw on good academic terms, their requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Academic Director. Those students who want to be considered for re-admittance following a withdrawal from the program must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for re-enrollment: a) The student left the program on good academic standing. If a student who was on academic warning or academic probation during their last term of study requests consideration for reenrollment, the request may be considered but the student would enter the program on academic probation if re-enrollment is granted b) The student has no disciplinary action pending or in force c) The student officially notifies the Academic Director of his/her intention to re-enroll in writing and outlines their reasons for wanting to re-enroll in the program. TRANSFER CREDITS POLICY The graduate programs at Christie’s Education are fully integrated programs of study and will not consider transfer credits from other institutions, except in cases involving VA recipients (see the Credit Evaluation Policy for VA Recipients below). Transfer of credits from Christie’s Education to graduate programs in other institutions may be possible, subject to the approval of those institutions.
CREDIT EVALUATION POLICY FOR VA RECIPIENTS The Department of Veterans Affairs requires that Christie’s Education inquire about each veteran or veteran benefits eligible person’s previous education and training, and request transcripts from all prior institutions, including military training, traditional college coursework and vocational training. Previous transcripts will be evaluated and credit may be granted as deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that acceptable records are submitted to Christie’s Education for evaluation.
VA PENDING PAYMENT POLICY In accordance with Title 38 US Code 3679 subsection (e), Christie’s Education adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA. This school will not: – Prevent nor delay the student’s enrollment; – Assess a late penalty fee to the student; – Require the student to secure alternative or additional funding; – Deny the student access to any resources available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution, including but not limited to access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities. However, to qualify for this provision, such students will be required to: – Produce the Certificate of Eligibility by the first day of class; – Provide written request to be certified; – Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as described in other institutional policies.
IMMUNIZATION POLICY New York State requires all full-time students born on or after January 1, 1957, to submit immunization documentation for measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) prior to the start of the academic year. New York State also requires that all full-time students, regardless of their date of birth, submit a Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccination Response form. The immunization forms are sent to students after their payment of the tuition deposit. Failure to comply with the state law will prevent students from studying at Christie’s Education.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY Christie’s Education is committed to creating a safe and healthy academic environment for its students, faculty and staff. The school expressly prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of drugs and alcohol by students, faculty, or staff members on school property, or while conducting school business off-premises. Members of the school community are responsible for complying with federal, state, and local laws on the possession, use, and sale of alcohol and illicit drugs. Those who violate such laws will be subject to discipline, up to and including expulsion. The full drug and alcohol policy is available upon request.

NOTICE OF NON-DISCRIMINATION In accordance with its own values and with federal, state and city statutes and regulations, Christie’s Education does not discriminate in admissions, employment, programs, or services on the basis of race, religion, age, sex, gender, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, citizenship status, veteran or military status, marital status, sexual orientation, or disability. Questions regarding compliance with the above requirements and requests for assistance should be directed to the Director of Business Affairs and Student Services.
RETURN TO TITLE IV POLICY FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID Christie’s Education, in accordance with 34CFR Sec. 668.22, calculates the return of Title IV Funds for any student whom received Title IV Aid and subsequently withdraws from the institution. If a student completely withdraws from Christie’s Education and has used Federal Title IV funds (i.e. Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan), during the enrollment period (i.e. term) in which they withdraw, the institution will observe the federally mandated process in determining what, if any amount of money must be returned to the federal program(s). Title IV recipients who withdraw completely before completing 60% of the enrollment period for which the student has been charged will be required to return a portion of the federal funds they received.
Official Withdrawal Policy Students receiving Financial Aid who intend to officially withdraw from Christie’s Education must inform the Academic Director and Director of Business Affairs and Student Services in writing, as outlined in the Academic Policies, Standards and Integrity section of the Student Handbook. In cases where a student has received federal financial assistance during that term, the Financial Aid officer will determine what, if any adjustment be made. This determination will be based on the formula mandated in the federal regulations for the return of Title IV funds. This determination is made on the basis of the number of calendar days completed in the term prior to the student’s notification to withdraw, divided by the total number of days in the term. If the resulting percentage is greater than or equal to 60%, no return of federal funds will take place. If the percentage is less than 60%, this percentage will be used to determine the portion of Title IV aid that has been ‘earned.’ The remaining amount must be returned to the federal loan programs.
Determination of Withdrawal Date The official date of withdrawal for a student is the date the institution was formally notified in writing of the student’s intention to discontinue their enrollment. If a student is administratively withdrawn (i.e. dismissed from the institution for academic or other reasons), the official withdrawal date shall be the date the institution informed the student of this decision. In the case where a student ceases to attend classes without formally informing the institution, the official withdrawal date will be the date the institution became aware that the student ceased attendance.

Refund Policy Under Return to Title IV Refunds as a result of official withdrawals will be made in accordance with the Christie’s Education refund policy. Refunds will be issued within 45 days of the withdrawal date and in the following order: – Federal unsubsidized Stafford Loans – Federal Direct Graduate Plus Loans After a withdrawal from the institution, if the amount of money that must be returned to the Title IV programs exceeds that which exists in the student’s account as a result of the institution’s refund policy, the student will be notified as to the amount of any financial aid that must be repaid to the federal loan program(s). This repayment must take place in order for a student to re-establish eligibility to receive federal funds in the future. Any loan proceeds must be repaid under the normal repayment procedures for the federal loan program and the terms and conditions of the promissory note of the loan signed by the student. Please refer to the official refund schedule previously outlined for more information.
